Fun at Swim and SUP the Sound If you love to swim – or SUP (Stand Up Paddle Board) – and want a challenge then don’t miss VISAR’s Swim and SUP the Sound, an event where you can have fun in the sun for a good cause. To be held this Sunday, June 5th the event is one of the highlights of the organization’s fundraising calendar. Taking place in and around the North Sound, both events start at Saba Rock with late registration at 8am; competitors will finish at the beach at Leverick Bay Resort. With a two and three mile swim and SUP course options participants can choose their fitness and skill level. Following the event, participants, as well as a fun loving group of observers and supporters will gather at Leverick Bay for a lunch buffet (free for swimmers and SUP’ers). There will also be beach games, family activities and music to entertain the crowd – and of course a trophy and awards ceremony for the victors. VISAR was founded in 1988, at the request of the BVI Government, and was modeled on

the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in the UK, the world’s oldest lifeboat service. Like the RNLI, and many other lifeboat services in Europe, it is an independent, volunteer-based organisation funded almost entirely by charitable donations. Since its formation VISAR has carried out well over 450 search and rescue missions, helped more than 1,200 people in distress and saved over 40 lives. Explains VISAR volunteer Mike Rowe of Sail Caribbean Divers, “Swim and SUP the sound has become a fun community event with a competitive edge, we see parents, teens, families and corporate teams enter...last year we even had a dog complete the two-mile swim. We are most grateful to all of our entrants and especially to our sponsors for making this a great event and supporting VISAR mission of saving lives at sea.” Go to the VISAR website at www.visar.org, or call the office at (284) 494-4357 for further information.

It’s Complicated Brilliantly cast, this film is directed by Nancy Meyers (What Women Want and Something’s Gotta Give) and is as far away from run of the mill romantic comedies that you can get. With lots of antics and disarming honesty filled with humor, it explores the romantic lives of middle-aged adults and the complications these relationships bring. Alec Baldwin plays Jake, a divorced lawyer who is now married to a much younger and sexy wife Agness (Lake Bell). The introduction finds us at a friends’ house party where Alec is toasting to their friends’ anniversary. His ex-wife, Jane (Meryl Streep) of ten years has moved on since her divorce and is also at the party and after the toast joins the group for a short while. However, when Agness returns, Jane politely withdraws, but as Jane walks away to leave, she turns to close the gate, just in time for Jake to catch a glimpse of her – signaling that he still has feelings for her. When Jane returns home we see her say goodbye to her middle daughter Gabby who is moving out and her eldest daughter, Lauren is there lending support – and as they all leave Jane walks into her kitchen and reminisces about the many memories of all her children at home with her, now all grown up. The following day, Jane’s friend Peter brings along architect (Steve Martin) to show blueprints to build a new wing onto her home. The next day, Jane’s family all meet up with Luke, her youngest son, for his graduation party and as the kids start to leave the party, she decides to go to Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
the bar and grab a drink. Coincidentally, Jake is there and they talk. Jane asks him when was the last time they were together, and he says 1999. Next thing they’re drinking martinis and having a good time on the dance floor sparks fly leading to an encounter in the hotel bedroom. Although Jane is feeling horrible, drunk and having just slept with her ex-husband, Alec keeps saying, “This is amazing, we just had a great time.” He also starts to question his decision to marry his younger, petulant wife. To complicate matters further, Adam, the architect keeps stopping by and lets her know that he is interested in more than just the new wing on her home. Jake and Jane meanwhile embark on a secret affair, with Jane now getting to be, “the other woman,” and although tempted by her ex, who is now keener than ever, Jane and Adam also begin a romantic friendship and the three somehow keep on bumping into each other which makes for some great funny scenes in the movie. But which of her suitors will she choose? With inspiring performances by the three main characters, a great storyline, characters and punch lines – you will have a really good time finding out! 8
Ask Koren
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Ask Koren Split the Rent Dear Koren, My boyfriend makes more money than me and now we have decided to live together because I ask him to move in, he is suggesting we split the rent half and half. Isn’t that very unfair? – Writer Dear Writer, People have a common misconception that the person who makes more money has it made and is sitting on this big pile of extra cash, when often, nothing could be further from the truth. In many cases because of the person’s lifestyle or needs, they could be in a similar position to you. For example, a woman might work as a secretary making 2,500 a month and pay rent, utilities, cable, phone bills, buy groceries, throw her box which is savings and end up with 500 left at the end of the month. Her boyfriend who is an accountant might be making 4,000 and pays the same rent and expenses, but also has to pay a loan for his studies, make car payments and buy gas and pay child support, he does not throw a box so he has less savings and he might only end up with 400 a month. So making more is not all one should look at to determine who has more dispensable income. I think it is fair to pay half of the rent with your boyfriend, especially if you are not sure what his other commitments are and you were paying the whole rent before. Was asking him to move in just a way to make your life financially Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
easier or do you want to spend more time with the person you love? I’m always amazed that some women ask for equal rights but not when it comes to finances. I think you both need to sit down and make a budget of how much it would take to live together – rent, utilities, entertainment, etc and if you split the rent 50/50, then you can decide who pays the other bills so that you are both comfortable with the arrangement. Apart from finances, please make sure you are both mature enough and mentally and emotionally prepared for such a commitment. Living with a man can sometimes mean you end up doing wife duties when you are not his wife. You both must be fully aware of what you are getting in to and finances is just one part of the whole equation. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 9
