These Dancers Have Talent! Do you enjoy dance? Then don’t miss the BVI DanceFest, one of the islands’ most popular dance events which will be held this Saturday, June 10th at 6:30pm at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall. BVI Dance Fest has been charming audiences for 17 years with a prodigious amount of youthful talent, enthusiasm and energy. Sponsored by the BVI Dance School, the vibrant show features ballet, pointe, tap, hip hop and jazz. Three hundred young performers between the ages of four and 18 will take part in this year’s performance, the 17th that show founder Sandy Lyons, the and her dedicated team of teachers have mounted. A professional dancer and instructor, Sandy is thrilled by the level of accomplishment of these fledgling performers. “More teachers have been involved,” she says of this year’s show, “and they have done a fantastic job. There are spectacular costumes and the choreography is above and beyond anything we have had in the past.”

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

In addition, several guest groups will perform: the ESHS Lady Rams, the Dub Squad (comprised of high school boys), the Nouveau Royales and aerialists from the Frangipani Studio directed by Amanda Georges. Sandy, the school’s director, started the BVI Dance School over 20 years ago, and has been teaching dance to islanders ever since. A dancer from the age of eight, Sandy had a dance school in Florida before moving to the BVI. When she arrived in Tortola, she saw a need for more cultural activities for the region’s children, founding the dance school and bringing dance to a generation of young people, as well as adults. Proceeds from the show will go to the BVI DanceFest Fund. Tickets are available at the J&C Department Store and Bolo’s - $10 for teens and adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the door, but it is advised to purchase tickets in advance to avoid being disappointed. Audience members are advised that the show starts at 6:30pm sharp.

Connecting to Nature

It’s no secret: We in the BVI are blessed to live in one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth. Since it’s Environment Week, I’m thinking about all my favorite ways to connect to nature here in Nature’s Little Secrets. Top of the list, for me anyway, has got to be hiking. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I actually love spending a few hours hauling myself up the side of a mountain. You can take your time and check out all the odd flowers and bugs you’d never see on the flats in town, plus when you get to the top you get to take a sweet selfie with a view. Something about the view from over 1,000 feet gives me a better perspective of the shape of the place I live, and really does let me feel more connected to the nature and geography of these islands. Another perk of hiking? By the time you get Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

back to the bottom, you might be exhausted and sore, but you can also justify the biggest, baddest brunch imaginable afterward. A close second is a solo beach trip. As nice as it is to catch up with friends in the sand near the sea, I find it much more meditative to go on my own to the most isolated beach I can get to. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you should just try it. Go early in the morning or on a weekday (summer in the BVI is great for these trips because with way fewer tourists we lucky residents have the beaches to ourselves). Sit in the sand. Smell the water. Listen to the waves. Watch the ants, chickens or other critters that are sharing the beach with you. No kidding, it’s downright magical. My other favorite isn’t for everybody: a leisurely float in the sea. I don’t want to brag too much here but I’m an excellent floater. In the right mood, I can stay on the surface so steadily and easily you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between me and a buoy. The feeling of being out on the water and watching the seabirds overhead, the fish underneath and even feeling the occasional bit of kelp brush along past me is so relaxing I can almost feel my worries escaping into the ocean around me. Maybe those not blessed with natural buoyancy could achieve the effect with a sturdy lifejacket? I’d love to hear how the Limin Times readers make their own connections to nature. 10 Habits Happy Couples Embrace Everyone who is genuine about making their relationship work longs to know the “secret” to a happy and lasting relationship. Well, I have good news for you: there are no secrets to it. I’ve talked to many happy couples that have lasted 15 and 20 years and more. Here are the 10 habits they all have in common: 1. They love unconditionally. Long-lasting couples give love just for the sake of loving and not because of anything received in return. They don’t stop loving because one partner had a rude moment or because they see someone else who looks a little nicer. 2. They forgive and don’t hold grudges. How quick we are to punish people for mistakes when we ourselves are so imperfect. Couples who last long learn to be tolerant and patient; they learn when to give second chances and how to to bury past mistakes for good. 3. They leave other people out. Anyone who won’t respect your relationship and tries to get between you and your partner, should be blocked, deleted and otherwise removed from your life. Happy couples also keep out the in-laws who try to control the relationship and the so-called friends who always have negative advice. 4. They make time for each other. Quality time cannot be exchanged for gifts and there is no shortcut for it. Happy couples spend quality time together and it’s not negotiable. They may choose all kinds of different ways to spend that time, but it’s on something they both agree to. When you love and enjoy each other’s company, you find you can’t wait to get home at the end of the day. 5. They fight fair. Every couple disagrees from time to time, but long lasting couples don’t care

about winning. Instead, the goal is always mutual understanding. This requires the ability to know when and how to admit they are wrong. A tough one for all of us, but a worthy goal when you consider how helpful it is in a relationship! 6. They respect each other. How wonderful it is when two persons can hold each other in high regard; they have boundaries with persons of the opposite sex, they speak to their partner as they would like to be spoken to and they would never hit or emotionally abuse their partner. 7. They demonstrate their love. People love to be appreciated by their partners. Love is not just words. It’s also sharing gifts, being affectionate, paying compliments and helping with chores when the other one is tired. Noting beats love in action. 8. They play with each other. Making time for fun and laughter with all the stress of life really keeps the relationship sweet. Hide notes for each other, go on dates and find other creative ways to have fun together. When the time spent together gets boring and all you talk about is bills, then you lose the essence of what sweetens the relationship. 9. They take care of themselves and each other. The better care you take of yourself, the more you are able to care for your partner. This is not just physical, but take care of your mental health and you can be more rational and reasonable. 10. They support each other. Be the kind of person that your partner with a listening ear, a hug and advice if that is needed. Happy couples are emotionally connected and one partner does not have to go outside of the relationship for that close emotional connection. 11

Wonder Woman When I saw the trailer for Wonder Woman, I thought: I know the lead actress from this movie, but until I wrote this review, I couldn’t pin point where. If you have seen Fast & Furious, Fast Five & Fast Six you should know her character, Gisele. Before Diana (Gal Gadot) became Wonder Woman, she was a princess of the Amazons on the island of Themyscira who trained to become a warrior. The Amazons were created by the Gods to restore peace to the world and were given many gifts. Diana’s mother Queen Hipployta raised Diana to be sheltered, almost as if she didn’t want her to become what she was destined to be. Her Aunty Antiope (Robin Wright) had to beg her sister to allow her to train Diana, but under the condition she was not to tell her the truth about her destiny. Life changes after Diana meets an American pilot/spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) who tells her about the great war raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the war because she knows who exactly is behind it, she leaves Themyscira with Trevor. Upon arrival in England Trevor learns that the information he presents to his superiors is not going to be used so he sets out to get things done on his own. He knows two good men who will go with him – Sameer (Said Taghmaoui) and Charlie (Ewen Bremner). Along with Diana, they set out to stop General Lundendorff (Danny Huston) and Dr. Maree also known as Dr. Poison (Elena Anaya)

who are the evil force behind the war. Diana refuses to pass through the first stop No Man’s Land (because no one ever made it across alive), without helping the people there. She is at the front while Trevor and the other men follow her lead. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny. Want to know if Diana met Ares the God of war and ended the war? Wonder Woman is now playing at UP’s Cineplex. 13

Surprising Statistical Revelations I’ve looked at and updated the stat sheet over and over when BVI track and field athletes achieve certain milestones collegiately, like winning conference championships, earning All America honors and winning medals in significant regional and international competitions at all levels or breaking national records. But, as much as I’ve examined the stats, there was one glaring one that that thoroughly escaped me all these years, until a recent conversation with track and field guru Rey O’Neal. While I was aware that Rikkoi Bratwaithe during this year’s 47th Carifta Games in Curacao became the territory’s first U20 Boys 100m finalist in our 41-year history of participation, it wasn’t until Rey pointed out that of our Carifta Games medals, only three male medals have come on the track in all those years. Braithwaite joined Derwin Scatliffe, who since 1987 had been the only U17 Boys 100m finalist when he made last year’s U18 Boys final. That left me in shock. Only Three! Reverberated in my head. My mind immediately raced backwards. I was the first with U20 Boys 400m silver in 1978 in the Bahamas, then was coach when Keita Cline won U17 Boys 200m bronze in 1989 in Jamaica and was association president when Kyron McMaster earned U17 Boys 400m Hurdles bronze in 2014 in Martinique. I was still in disbelief! Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

In all, BVI athletes have won 49 Carifta Games medals since 1978. Excluding the relays, 43 of the 49 have been individual event medals, 26 by Girls and 17 by Boys. Rey’s statistical revelation sent me combing the stat sheet even further. In all, medals have been won in 11 events, where Girls have won medals in 9 of the 11 events and Boys in 8 of the 11. The only areas that the Boys have earned a medal so far where Girls haven’t, is in the 200m and High Jump events. Of those 43 individual medals, 28 have been earned in field events and 15 on the track. A further examination shows that the Discus Throw has been our most successful event with 8 medals followed by the Long Jump with 7 and the Triple Jump with 6. A fine tooth comb will show as follows, a chronological listing of medals won in events, with the 400m being the event in which the first medal was earned and the 400m Hurdles the last: 400m, 3; Long Jump 7. 200m, 1; High Jump, 1; Triple Jump, 6; Discus Throw, 5; 100m, 5; Javelin Throw, 4; Shot Put, 5; 800m, 3 and 400m Hurdles 3. Of the medal numbers and events in which they have been won, BVI athletes only began competing in the hurdles over the last six years and have three medals. So what does the stats really say? While many will be in denial, the reality is, our strength clearly lies in field events and not sprinting, especially among the males with just two athletes making 100m finals in 41 years. The hurdles are an untapped resource. 14
