Roundup This Week’s Feature Story by Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel Celebrate A BVI Legend The Troubadour of Jost Van Dyke, Philicianno “Foxy” Callwood, turns 78 this week, and he wants the BVI to come to Foxy’s Tamarind Bar and Restaurant in Great Harbor to help him celebrate. Although Foxy no longer performs humorously crowdpleasing songs like “I Wanna Be a Bedbug,” he’s still an energetic host, greeting guests, posing in their photos, and regaling them with jokes and stories of the Jost Van Dyke of his youth. Known around the world for his Old Year’s Night parties, (routinely named as among the top five places to be to ring in the new year) here in the BVI we know Foxy for a career of contributions to the territory’s tourism sector, beginning with the 1968 founding of his beach bar. Over the nearly 50 years it’s been open, the business has grown from little more than a tabletop to a fully-stocked bar, restaurant, gift shop and con-

cert venue – as well as a muststop spot for boaters visiting the territory. His annual wooden boat regatta has encouraged the restoration and use of traditional boats. His non-profit the Jost Van Dykes Preservation Society has worked to preserve local history, as well as conserve endemic animal and plant species for future generations. Such accomplishments have earned Foxy many accolades over the years. Most recently, he was inducted into the Charter Yacht Boating Association Hall of Fame, an honor held by just 10 people. Back in 2009, his “services to tourism” were cited as the reason he was named a Member of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. For more information about the party, contact Foxy’s at 495-9258.
