Paw BVI Goes Country Every one is welcome to the Diamond Estate farm to meet the PAW team as well as all the animals that call Countryside Adventures home. Kids will get to partake in the inaugural Canines, Cats and Critters Egg Hunt. A thrilling Tortoise Derby, complete with a 10-runner race card, will follow after the hunt. Adults and kids alike will also have a chance to ride some of the farm’s ponies, watch horseriding displays, bottle feed an orphaned lamb, interact with real Easter bunnies, play country games and win prizes from Bleu Chocolat. On the menu are a cake stall, BBQ lunch and drinks for your enjoyment. While everybody there will be an animal lover, don’t forget to leave your pets at home! Need more information? Please call Countryside Adventures at 542-2070.
Animal lovers of all ages won’t want to miss the fun on Saturday, 15th when PAW BVI and Countryside Adventures will come together and have a fun family afternoon at the Diamond Estate Farm & Country Centre. Gates will open at noon to raise funds for PAW. PAW – Promoting Animal Welfare ¬– is a nonprofit organization established in February 2014. The organization’s main activity is getting pets and stray dogs and cats spayed or neutered to help make sure the animals’ population stays under control. Their main goal is to improve the living conditions for as many animals as possible within the BVI. In addition to “fixing” cats and dogs, PAW also has them tested for diseases and vaccinated.

He Is Risen! Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ resurrection from the dead. It’s also Christianity’s most important holiday which is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21st. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22nd to April 25th each year. Unlike other holidays that have fixed dates Easter is called a moveable feast because it doesn’t always fall on the same date each year. Since the holiday is based in the faith, naturally churches here in the BVI celebrate the Easter season. Apart from church celebrations, there is also the Virgin Gorda’s Easter Festival and this year is their 50th anniversary. Each year we also see a growing number of Easter egg hunts and family events being hosted by various groups and organizations. For more information on Virgin Gorda’s Easter Festival and other events please see our round up on page 7 and 8.
In addition to Easter’s religious significance, there is also a commercial side, as evidenced by the mounds of jellybeans and marshmallow chicks that appear in stores each spring. Treats like Easter eggs, bunnies, baskets and candy have all become a standard part of this holy holiday. It is said that over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made each year. Since I became a mom, I’ve been celebrating Easter Sunday with the Anglican Church, fist attending their church service and then the Easter party for the children of the church that follows. This year, my family and I will not only celebrate Easter Sunday with the church but we also have a fun early evening planned and we will be attending the Easter Festival parade over on Virgin Gorda on Easter Monday. Like so many other public holidays, we’re going to use the time off to enjoy each other’s company. How will you celebrating your Easter season? Share with us on our Facebook page.
Happy Easter! Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Hot To Cold Dear Koren, After this lady had been giving me signals for a while, I started talking to her then I asked her out and she consented. We chatted all the time then we went out twice and both times we had a good time. Now I’m checking that for over 3 weeks now when I call or text, she not responding until long after, and when I ask her out again, she makes excuses. Why would she go from being interested in me to suddenly pulling away when everything was going well? –Frustrated Dear Frustrated, It could be literally anything. Maybe an ex came back into her life, maybe she is not really single and was trying to make a boyfriend jealous. It could be she just does not like the way you smell, or that she is still interested but suffers with mood swings or depression. She could be a woman who’s keenly interested in a guy at the beginning but withdraws if she perceives him to be clingy. Some women like the bells and whistles of a new relationship, but then get bored once things become routine. And these are a just a few examples. I know it’s probably a blow to your ego, but you have not lost anything. You and someone saw something in each other, you went out, and now it seems to have fizzled. Before you jump to conclusions, ask her directly what the problem is. Maybe it will turn out that you misread the signals or that she is really still interested. If she says she does not want to go out anymore, then just wish her well. As a man, the odds are in your favor as there are more women than men out there, so I’m
sure in no time at all you will meet someone else that you click with. Some persons do not enjoy the company of a man or woman who is overeager or pushy; one person might see it as being attentive but he other might feel like he or she is not getting any space. Just ensure you are not doing that and pace your attention so that it is not overwhelming to her. Whatever the situation, you will be okay, either with or without her. Remember that some persons will come into your life for a short period and others for a longer time. All you can do is pay attention to the lessons learned. What does not end in a romantic relationship could still be a great friendship. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

A Monster Calls By You should probably have a box of tissues handy for this heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting, dark fantasy of a family dealing with terminal illness. The story centers on 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), who we first meet having a terrible nightmare. When he goes to school, he’s bullied, which seems like it might, at first, be the source of his nighttime woes. But then we meet Conor’s mom (Felicity Jones). She’s sick, although the film never specifies with what exactly. Conor tells his rather grumpy grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), that his mom’s bouts in bed are a side effect of her treatment, but grandmother’s reaction hints that there is more to the situation. Then, a few minutes after midnight, a monster comes knocking at Conor’s window. He’s an ancient yew tree (voiced by the epic Liam Neeson) and he says that he’ll be back on future nights to tell Conor three stories. After that, Conor will have to tell a story of his own. Ominously, the monster says Conor will reveal “his truth” in that story. The tales the monster tells Conor take us out of the dreary town where Conor and his mother live and into a beautifully drawn animated world set in the distant past. Conor thinks the stories feel like traditional fairy tales, but only at first. Gradually, the monster shows him that people in real life are rarely the evil villains or pure-hearted heroes of fairy tales, and we the viewers can begin to see that while the yew tree is frightening and destructive, maybe he’s not a villain either. Meanwhile, in daylight, poor Conor’s life
isn’t getting any easier. His mom takes a bad turn so the family decides Conor should go stay with his grandmother. Unlike the amicable, close relationship he shares with his mom, Conor feels his grandmother stifles him. At school, the conflicts with his bully are escalating too. When Conor’s mother shares that her doctors have decided her current regimen isn’t working and they will try an experimental treatment derived from a yew tree, Conor feels a ray of hope: the monster can heal his mother. But the monster is non-committal: “If she can be healed, the yew tree will heal her.” How will the treatment go? What will Conor’s story and his truth be? Watch for the moving conclusion. A Monster Calls is on DVD and can be streamed on Amazon and iTune 13

26 Off To Carifta Games The BVI Athletics Association is sending the largest delegation since joining the Carifta Games in 1976 to the weekend’s 46th Carifta Games in Willemstad, Curacao. The BVI delegation has 26 athletes, and will be led by Rikkoi Brathwaite in the U20 Boys division, and by U18 athletes Beyonce DeFreitas and Djimon Gumbs. Brathwaite, who ran a 100m personal best of 10.55 seconds over the weekend, narrowly missed an U18 Boys bronze medal in his specialty by 0.03 seconds last year. He’s the second BVI male to make it to a final behind Derwin Scatliffe in 1987. No U20 Boy has ever been a finalist. DeFreitas, fourth in the 200m a year ago, is coming off winning a sprint double during the Elmore Stoutt High School Inter-House competition, where she ran the 200m in 23.98 seconds, just shy of the 23.97 personal best she recorded at last year’s Carifta Games in Grenada. She also won the 400m in 56.02 seconds. Gumbs, who was fifth, improved his 17.20m Shot Put effort during the Carifta Games Trials in early March, with a mammoth heave of 17.52m on his final attempt of the inter house competition. Both Gumbs and DeFreitas, have also qualified for the International Association of Athletics Federations World Youth Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, July 12-16.
