BVI DanceFest Reaches the Stars

The director of the BVI Dance School, Sandy has been teaching dance to island youngsters between the ages of four and 20 for the last 20 years. “I had a dance school in Florida before coming to Tortola, and when I arrived on the island, I saw a need for more cultural activities here,” explains Sandy. Reaching for the Stars is the theme for this year’s production, and over 300 performers will take to the stage for the event. In addition to the BVI Dance School, participating groups will include Killi Killi, Firebird Performing Arts, Nouveau Royale and The ESHS Lady Rams. Proceeds from the BVI DanceFest go towards the BVI DanceFest Fund, which is additionally supported by corporate sponsorships and fundraisers such as the annual BBQ Funday. The Fund is a registered non-profit organization set up to assist children and young adults in the BVI, who show an interest in the performing art of dance by providing scholarships. The fund is used annually to help defray the costs of the DanceFest performance as well as to assist students in need with dance classes and costume costs. Bring the entire family out this Saturday to an evening of great dance – and support a worthy cause.

Don’t miss one of the islands’ favorite dance events, the BVI DanceFest, which is taking place this Saturday, June 11th at the Briercliffe Hall at 6:30pm. In a spectacle of young talent, 300 dance students from dance schools and organizations throughout the island will put on a vibrant show featuring colorful costumes, and dance genres ranging from ballet to tap, and hip hop to jazz. BVI DanceFest has been promoting dance throughout the islands since it was first started by dance instructor Sandy Lyons 16 years ago. “BVI DanceFest continues to be one of the more popular BVI shows and we are indeed delighted with the interest the production has generated from the public, and the level of the encouragement it has provided for youngsters to learn the art of dance,” says Sandy who began dancing herself at the age of eight.

My Best Hurricane Tips Not bragging here, not by any stretch, but I have lived through so many Caribbean storms, from tropical waves, to full-on Cat. 5 hurricanes. I’ve learned a little (ok, a LOT) about storm preparedness, beyond the usual go-to. For sure always do the basics – things like stocking up on canned goods, flashlights, prescription meds, etc. but some other things I’ve learned: •Get your laundry done, all of it. • Gas up the vehicles, all of them. Get extra gas cans filled, too. The lines you’ll experience at the gas pumps post storm will be hideous. • Pray your stove/ oven runs on gas, not electricity. You’ll be cooking up a storm once all the stuff in your freezer starts thawing. • Boat friends, GET TO A HURRICANE HOLE. • Be prepared to go to bed as darkness hits. • Take care of those around you. • Take everything off the porch. • Candles and flashlights are important, yes. But, don’t forget extra batteries/lighters/matches! • Pets have their own sets of issues. Let them out to do thier business before the storm hits. • No laughing matter, don’t hit the rum bottle to early. You’ll need to be clear-headed if some sort of disaster strikes. Appreciate solitude, appreciate overflowing cisterns, appreciate the beauty of candlelight. Appreciate even the beauty of what the storm is handing you – crashing oceans, palms with their fronds blown back. And tell those around you, how much they mean to you. After all, we are all in this together. And this, too, shall pass. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

TheAsk Essential KorenGuide to Space Sharing

5. There are chores to be done. It is important to talk about chores and meals. Be careful that the person is not expecting a maid or daily sex if that is not what you signed up for. People have ideas in their heads of what it means to live with someone else, perhaps based on what they saw growing up, so let him or her know what you are willing to and not willing to do. 6. Don’t stop dating each other. Just because you live together does not mean you get into a rut just talking about money, housework and whose turn it is to wash the dishes. Make time for weekly dating and do what you can to keep the relationship special and sweet. 7. Discuss the “what next”. Living together is a big step and a couples should only do it if they can see the potential for more. While no one can predict the future, ensure you are on the same page about whether this is a short term, temporary arrangement or a stepping stone for a permanent relationship. Of course, it seems terribly unromantic to establish ground rules, but don’t worry, you don’t have to actually sign a contract. However, just have the conversation, acknowledge each other’s expectations, establish mutual understanding and agreement-then tuck that information in your brain somewhere and get on with living as deliciously as you can. It will be a learning experience for the newbies and if done right, could be good practice for marriage.

Scenario number 1-So you are dating for a few years, one spends more time at the other’s place and you decide that instead of paying two rents, why not just pay one and live together. Scenario number 2-you are dating for a short while, but he is always off on some mysterious mission with his phone turned off and you decide to offer to have him move in because you figure you will be able to keep better tabs on him. Whatever your motivation for living together and for deciding to share the same space, there are things that you both should consider to make this as smooth a transition as it could possibly be. 1. What are your reasons for wanting to live together? Examine your own motives and ask your partner what his or her reasons are. The reasons don’t have to match perfectly, but the understanding and acceptance of each other’s expectations should be aligned. 2. Discuss finances clearly before and not after. There is no need to pool all your money together because you are not married and there are legal implications to that, but at least you can have a general fund for the running of the home. 3. Where do you fit the young children? Is your partner allowed to discipline your children? What happens when the ex comes by to visit his or her children? As a couple you must decide on maintenance, discipline and other factors. 4. Boundaries and private time. Living together does not mean the person now belongs to you. He or she is still entitled to his or her private time, should have the ability to spend time with their own friends and has the right to not have you going through his or her phone.

Future Football players in Baughers Bay More than 100 primary and high school boys and girls from across the territory, can be found honing their football skills on Saturday mornings, in the Digicel Center of Excellence, either on the Millicent Mercer Grounds in Baughers Bay, the Althea Scatliffe School Grounds in Road Town, or on the Valley Recreation Grounds in Virgin Gorda. “This is a breeding ground for the future,” Cassandra “Cass” Gregg, who is responsible for U9-U13 players said. “In the next five years, we should have a good Under 21 team at least. We went to St. Martin with a U13 team and came up against the best from Martinique, French St. Martin and Guadeloupe and we didn’t loose a game-only on penalties to get to the final. Once we keep these guys together-we have them on Mondays and Wednesdays and they are in the Digicel Center of Excellence-we will have a good team and in the next 10 years, possibly one of the best national teams in the Caribbean.” There are 38 boys at the Mercer Grounds, 35 Girls at Scatliffe Grounds and 30 boys and girls on Virgin Gorda. The elite players from BVIFA school leagues during the first school term are invite to try out, Gregg explained. “We had a game one Saturday and had over 60 kids and we tried to get them to earn a spot in the Digicel Center of Excellence and some players got dropped,” she stated. “I know some parents didn’t like it but we had to prove a point here. It’s not because you are good, we’re Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

going to pick you—you have to come out and earn your spot.” While many players want to hog the ball, Gregg said that they have been working with players on controlling and passing, as most have a good first touch. “In this program, we limit them to two touches—control and pass—because we don’t want them running around with the ball,” she pointed out. “This is one of the major problems when we have the league. You find one player will want to take the ball from one end to the other end without looking up to see if there’s another player on his team to pass it to. That’s not going to work. They are here to do the basic things and we are here to ensure they perform it properly.” BVIFA Youth Development Officer Avondale “Avon” Williams, who is responsible for the U13U15 Boys, said they are seeing all the young players coming through the program to help fulfill the national duties plan. “We are seeing quite a good number of players coming through and we have a young promising goal keeper, Sonji McCall, and goal keeping is an area our country basically lacks at the moment,” he noted. “We have a number of seven and nine year olds who we are trying to categorize in different national age groups, so we can start making the steps of U9, U11, U13s right up to the seniors. Basically, we can look forward for them to start filling the gaps.” 10
