Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast Cancer is a cancer that forms in the cells of breast and it’s the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in women – 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime. But women aren’t the only ones affected. Men represent one percent of breast cancer cases and they are often misdiagnosed. Early detection of cancer saves many lives, so the best way to protect yourself is to know the signs. Some signs and symptoms of breast cancer may include: a lump in your breast, the breast changes in size, shape or appearance, an inverted nipple, peeling, scaling, crusting or flaking of the skin surrounding the nipple, and redness of the skin over your breast. Women should check their breasts monthly to get to know what’s normal for them and be on alert for any changes. Should any of these symptoms appear, head in for a Mammogram right away. The Virgin Island Islands Cancer Society is marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month starting Friday, when they will be outside FirstCaribbean Bank selling memorabilia and t-shirts as well as sharing information and recruiting new members. On Saturday, you can do your part for the cause by participating in the annual CIBC FirstCaribbean
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.
Annual Walk/Run. The event begins at 5:30am. Registration is $20, which includes and branded t-shirt and refreshments. The society will also be outside RTW from 10am–3pm on Saturday raising funds and sharing information. On the 25th it’s Paint the Town Pink for the primary schools, and then on the 26th is Paint the Town Pink for everyone else. It’s worth noting that walking and other regular physical activity also lowers the risk for developing breast cancer, while having a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, drinking, poor diet, and combined hormone replacement therapy treatment are all associated with a higher risk for developing it. Wrapping up the month will be the Gala celebrating the society’s 20th anniversary on November 3rd. The event will also honor the founding members, and it takes place at the Mariner Inn & Restaurant at 6:30pm. Please go out and support as many events as you can and note that 100 percent of funds raised from the t-shirt and memorabilia sales return back to the community by helping persons who are diagnosed with cancer.

Ferry Tales One of the many perks of island life is how completely different commuting is here compared to on the mainland. If, like me, you’re fortunate enough to have your own vehicle, the island is so small that you can probably make it from your home to work in less than half an hour, and that’s with a good-sized backup at the roundabout. Maybe you’re not as lucky and you hitch. In that case, the good days probably far outweigh the rough ones, with the commute often being a social time to catch up with some of the acquaintances who regularly pick you up. When I was carless, I generally enjoyed the breeze and scenery offered by a safari bus. The luckiest category of commuters, if you ask me, are the ones who get to take the ferry. I have a friend who once described the daily ride from Virgin Gorda to Tortola as the best part of the day. For the workaholics, a morning ferry ride is a chance to get a jumpstart on the day’s emails, reading or other work. For the procrastinators, it can be time to catch up on yesterday’s unfinished tasks before arriving to the office. For those with a shorter boat ride (I’m thinking of the folks who take a company vessel in to the Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
office or job site each day) I’ve seen that the nature of the ride depends very much on the personality of the rider. The more sociable types can be found in one area chatting and exchanging news and jokes. Your introverts will be in another area altogether, enjoying the sea view or the little pleasures of a mobile app. After punch-out time, a ferry ride is a chance to meditate on the day gone by, shift gears away from the workday and into family or other personal time, and soak up the legendary island sunsets. On the relatively rare occasions when I get to hop a ferry in pursuit of a story or client meeting, I usually use the time to read, either a paperback or with an audiobook. I don’t know why, but I do my best reading in transit. Of course, all the peace and relaxation of a ferry commute has a serious downside: it’s highly vulnerable to the whims of mother nature. Rough seas aren’t common around here, but on those days you’re likely to find the riders huddled under partial shelter or nursing ginger mints to soothe the accompanying queasiness. Like everything in life, it can’t be smooth sailing all the time! 6

How To Be Irresistibly Attractive It is a natural human urge to be attractive to others, especially when seeking a romantic relationship. Many women assume that men want a glamorous woman with a perfect body and long hair. Many men are of the impression that women are attracted by a macho type with a hot physique and financial stability. While those might be true in some cases, what makes someone attractive is more than external. Here are 10 qualities that enhance your likeability to a potential partner: 1. A pleasing smile. Few things are as attractive as someone whose face reflects happiness and joy. A genuine smile sends a message of warmth and openness. 2. The ability to be calm in stressful situations. You don’t have to be MaGyver, but people feel a sense of security around persons who can come up with suggestions in a crisis and who are not easily panicked and flustered over the slightest thing. We think, “this is someone I want around me all the time” 3. Being kind and non-judgmental to others. It’s a big turn-off when someone is nice to you but tears everyone else down. You wonder who is the real person. One can be honest and mention someone else’s faults, but constantly being critical of everyone is awful. 4. Being passionate about something. Talking about something you love lights up your face and lets the beholder see and hear your enthusiasm.
5. Positivity and optimism. Someone who can avoid drama and be positive is a magnet to others. In the face of life’s negatives, such a person helps us to find some hope even if it’s like a needle in a haystack. 6. Taking care of yourself. Taking regular baths, dressing properly, smelling good, having fresh breath and those type of things matter. They are just not the only things that matter. 7. Help people to feel and do better. We like to be around those who motivate and inspire us and even call us out (in a loving manner) when we mess up. It may feel comfortable to be around people who you can just wallow with, but after a while we tire of stagnation and yearn to grow and develop. 8. Liking who you are. If you don’t like yourself, nothing anyone does or says will make a difference. Your insecurity will manifest as constantly seeking approval, which drains and drives others. Be uniquely and genuinely you, and love yourself. 9. Be fun. When you make people laugh, they like being around you. Try to laugh at yourself, to see the joy in life and to not take everything too seriously. 10. Doing the right thing. We are drawn to people who are honorable. It makes us feel that if we were to get close to them, we would not be betrayed or let down. People are naturally drawn to those who are likeable, confident and who care about more than just themselves.

If you’ve ever watched a movie based on a line of toys, you know it’s not a genre known for originality. In the case of the Lego Ninjago Movie, it’s not a dealbreaker, either. With its lightningfast pace, you’d have to watch it a couple of times to catch every single quip and visual gag, which makes up for the super-familiar ‘hero’s journey’ storyline. Our hero is Lloyd (Dave Franco), one-sixth of Ninjago City’s favorite teen fighting force, which takes inspiration from Captain Planet (heroes with powers based on various natural elements) and the Power Rangers (heroes sorted by color and who fight inside massive robots aka mechs). Like most superheroes, one of Lloyd’s key conflicts has to do with keeping his regular teen identity separate from his Green Ninja persona and powers. Film creators have laid it on extrathick: Lloyd’s estranged dad happens to be Ninjago City’s biggest foe, Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux). So, on what seems like a daily basis, Lloyd has to bear the taunts and jeers of his classmates and neighbors, who hate him for 11
being the son of the town’s villain, and he has to suit up as Green Ninja to help defeat his father. After we meet all the teen ninjas (who include some very funny folks like Abbi Jacobson, Fred Armisen and Kumail Nanjiani) and see them in action, we see our hero make a critical error in judgment in an attempt to defeat Lord Garmadon for good, and not just for the day. Because of Lloyd, Ninjago City is under attack by a giant cat called Meowthra. It’s an actual cat roaming through a city of Lego and it looks even funnier than it sounds. Anyway, after Meowthra comes on the scene, it’s time for a showdown that really challenges Lloyd and the other teen ninjas. They have to work together with Lord Garmadon to save Ninjago City. How will Lloyd make peace with his dad? How will the rest of the teen ninjas cope with partnering with their town’s nemesis? What the heck is the ultimate-ultimate weapon? Dear Diary Friday
Hey girl, today was a bittersweet moment in the office. We officially informed my coworkers about my new position in the company and what my responsibilities were and who will be my staff. Ben and I also moved over to our new office location. I left the office at four to make a few stops before heading home. First I stopped by the mall to find a sexy yet conservative dress to wear out with Tim tonight. I found a little red dress that hugs my curves just right and is length appropriate and not too reveling. My dress choice was because I wanted to look my best in front of these strangers, be sexy as a woman and still looked respectable. I learned earlier from Tim that his office was having a happy hour celebration because of the new client he just signed, so we decided we’d catch a later movie than our previous plan to join in. After the mall, I stopped by my mom’s place. I told her about the official announcement at work and that I’d be going out with Tim but I’d have my cell in case of any emergencies. At his work celebration, Tim would not leave my side. He didn’t give other guys a chance to talk to me alone, not even his married boss. Some of his co-workers I’ve met before, so I was more comfortable around them. I socialized and was starting to Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
loosen up a bit until Tim pryed me away to head out to catch our 10:30 movie. Girl can I tell you I don’t know what was showing on that movie theatre screen because I was so tipsy from earlier that all I did was whisper nastiness in Tim’s ear. I think if he had let I would have done a lot more than just talk, something about him playing hard to get turned me on even more. I can’t tell you when the movie ended or how we got back to my place but I can tell you when I saw that six-foot meal and the right amount of inches on the desert table that the only voice in my head I understood at that moment was the one that told me to eat. Girl between you and Jesus no one needs to finds out what went down tonight. Remember when I told you that I needed to end whatever is going on between me and Tim? Well I did my own little research on Mr. Timothy and girl, all I did was said a prayer that nothing goes down between us because I don’t know if I could manage all that. But tonight was an exception because that itch that needed scratching was more powerful than my urge to fight temptation. By the way it’s 3am and I’m tired and on top of that I have to get back up in a few hours to make Tim some breakfast. 12
B’More As far back as I can remember I’ve been a fan of McKenzie Baltimore Junior, also known as “B’More.” I’ve been to shows where he performed, seen him walk runways and even watched him perform in a play a few years ago. Maybe you’re not a longtime fan like me, but you remember Love Again, a track whose music video got big love from folks all over the BVI because it showcased so many local places and faces. If not, let me reintroduce you to the one they call B’More. Father, brother, son, and uncle are just some of the titles he holds, He’s also a singer, songwriter and a health and wellness coach. B’More says, “I’m very tune in with myself. I often take time to work on myself. I’m currently away from my daughter so I speak with her often. My circle is small so I’m either at the movies or at one of their homes having meaningful fun. I’ve recently became a health and wellness coach and a part of Herbal Life Nutrition, most of my off stage time is spent pouring into people.” About four years ago B’More’s music took a shift away from raw R and B toward Caribbean R and B. “That’s Caribbean productions fused with an R and B sound,” B’More explains, adding that his 13
newest single Touchdown, featuring Drastic out of Antigua, speaks volumes to how he would like his music to continue. It’s available for digital download everywhere. Asked about a recent career highlight, B’More took it back to the the 2017 BVI Festival when R. City brought him on stage to show respect for his artistry in the Virgin Islands. It was a moment he’ll never forget. In the next five years, he hopes to continue to improve his songwriting to the point where he is known not just in the Caribbean, but throughout the music industry. He likewise wants to expands his independent record label Getta Entertainment, and to be an ambassador for Caribbean music worldwide. When asked if he has special words for his fans, B’More was all praise. ”To my amazing fans, you are the best! You’re the reason I am still relevant, because you are still talking about my music. New music and new videos are being worked on constantly for all my GOGETTAS around the world, but especially for the BVI!” Keep up with B’More on Instagram @mckenziebaltimore, Facebook @mckenziebaltimore and via his website- www.officialbmore.com. Christopher Meets World Cycling Champions Goal Cycling joined track and field, sailing and swimming as the territory’s fourth World Championships last week when Darel Christopher Jr. competed in the UCI Time Trial in Innsbruck, Austria. “My year has been great, because everything I set out to accomplish in 2018, I accomplished it last week in Austria,” Christopher Jr. said. “Things went great. My goal was to qualify for Worlds and I made it. It really means a lot to represent your country because it takes a lot. A lot of people globally try to qualify and fail. Basically, only the big dogs qualify, because it’s very hard.” The 28-year-old cyclist said the journey took hours and hours of training day-in and day-out, going through various climatic changes. Despite having mechanical failures, he was satisfied to finish 56/61 riders, though he lost valuable time. “I gained a lot of experience,” he said. “When you go to the World Championships—there’s nothing bigger than that and it means a lot to me—you see guys and look at their equipment and I definitely need better equipment. I got mine last minute from guys who I’ve known for 2-3 years who reached out
Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
to me, and said they wanted me to go with better equipment that what I had and I was thankful for that. My next go around, I’ll need to have better equipment.” Christopher Jr. qualified for Worlds during the Pan Am Championships in Argentina, where he made the time trials qualifier. “Everyone there had the same goal in mind—try to qualify for your country,” he noted. “I was in the race with 2 kilometers to go and there was a big crash. I was in the crash but luckily I didn’t go down, but by the time I got back on the pace they were already crossing the line. I finished in the 60s of more than 100 riders. I was happy with my result, because I was there the whole time until that crash.” He said he has been healthy all season and that the Pan Am race was his best race of the season as he was among the top 20 riders before the crash and was in peak form. “I think if it wasn’t for the crash, I could have finished in the top 10,” he said. “Who knows what would have happened, but that was my best race and I definitely felt good.”
