Akeem Stanley Born and raised in the British Virgin Islands, Akeem Stanley is an aesthetic designer with an international appeal focusing on colors and sophisticated silhouettes. His fascination with red carpet events began young and his constant desire to know how celebrities got to wear beautiful gowns led him to fashion designing. “To me, the ability to construct a garment and change someone’s personality and character has always been my inspiration,” Akeem said. ”From an early age, I was always creative and at 18 I began my fashion designing and creating garments.” One of Akeem’s career highlights was when he got the opportunity to showcase his collection at Summer Sizzle BVI for the first time in 2016. (He got to do it again in 2017.) His first runway show solidified his status as an emerging designer, as well as his commitment to both the creative and business side of fashion. He looks forward to participating in lots more runway shows in his future. He takes pride in his progress, although he acknowledges that there have been many ups and Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
downs. “Being a self-taught fashion designer and an entrepreneur, I expected trials and errors,” he said. “All have been lessons learnt. There were many late nights and rethinking that made an impact on progress. I am very proud of myself.” Akeem’s designs are custom made. Most of his clientele wants something for a special event. He sketches, chooses fabric and constructs the garment according to each client’s unique shape. Young as he is, Akeem has big dreams for his future. “I like to be optimistic, but my ultimate goal is to become a successful world-renowned fashion designer,” he said. If you want to be able to look back when that happens and say you supported Akeem before he was a star, you can purchase his work by contacting him directly through Facebook @akeemstanley, Instagram @designerakeemstanley or via email at designsbyakeem@gmail.com. 4

When I looked at the forecast Monday morning, I had a mixture of excitement and dread: It says to expect rain. All week long. Between the cooler temperatures rain usually brings and the built-in excuse to cozy up at home with the family, I usually look forward to wet weather, but a week might be too much, even for me. It got me wondering about the forecast we all rely on so much, especially during the hurricane season. According to a 2015 article in the BBC Magazine by Peter Moore, the first weather forecaster was Admiral Robert FitzRoy, who famously captained the HMS Beagle. He began by issuing storm warnings in 1860. He founded what came to be the Met Office, and created the word forecast to reflect that he was extrapolating from scientific data and not a psychic making predictions. A year later, his forecasts were published in newspapers across Britain, and were “fantastically popular.” Not unlike today, people had mixed reactions to the reports, according to Moore. On the one hand, horse racing fans were said to choose what to wear to the track based on his reports. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
6
FitzRoy even had the support of Queen Victoria, who once sent messengers to his home to ask what to expect on a coming voyage to the Isle of Wight. On the other hand, politicians lamented the high cost of the telegraph, which FitzRoy used to gather data and disseminate reports. And, since the science was new and the calculations had to be worked out by hand, the forecasts weren’t as accurate as we’re accustomed to today. Moore says that although meteorologists of today revere FitzRoy as a founder of their science, after just five years publishing his reports, FitzRoy had fallen into a depressive state and felt the work was failing. He killed himself in April 1865. His life may have had a sad ending, but I think we all owe some gratitude to FitzRoy as a meteorological pioneer. He was among, if not the first, to recognize that the weather predictions that had been common up to that time were dangerously unreliable. Besides setting up the public weather watch office that would become the prototype for met offices around the world, he also invented a barometer that could be usefully interpreted by common people.

You might think that after nearly 70 years, Disney’s animated version of Alice in Wonderland might feel a little dated, but if you only look at the characters and story and don’t pay too much attention to the music, you could believe it’s almost contemporary. The film starts with Alice sitting under a tree listening to her sister read to her, but the historical subject matter isn’t interesting to Alice, so she wanders off to gaze at bubbling stream. Soon, Alice spies a rabbit in a waistcoat rushing off to an appointment. Too amazed and/or thoughtless to consider where she might wind up, Alice gives chase. She falls into a hole so deep she has time to wonder whether she will arrive on the “upside” down part of the world. The fact that she is parachuted by her voluminous skirt is our first clue, if not Alice’s that she is no longer in a world that follows logical rules. At the bottom of the hole, Alice is frustrated to find that she can’t continue to follow the rabbit because she doesn’t fit through the door. Advised by a doorknob that she will change size by eating and drinking some things he mysteriously has handy, the Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

naive Alice winds up growing so giant that her tears cause a flood, then small enough to fit right inside the container she previously drank from. Alice makes it out of the hole, but has a long way to go before she will get the chance to talk to the rabbit. Along the way, she meets the creepy twins Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum; a classroom full of garden flowers; a Dodo bird; a stoned caterpillar; a crew of “mad” folks celebrating their unbirthdays; and a clearly deceptive cat with the ability to appear and disappear at will. At every turn, Alice gets questionable advice, but, on her own and with no understanding of where she is, she feels she has no choice but to follow directions. Eventually, all this terrible advice leads to Alice meeting the despot of the area, the Queen of Hearts, who makes about as much sense as everyone else Alice has met so far. The difference is, as Queen, she has the power to send Alice to trial and hand down a deadly sentence. How does Alice get free from the Queen? Will she learn anything from all this calamity? Alice in Wonderland is available on iTunes and other streaming services.

Don’t Try To Change Me Most of us don’t mind stepping outside of our comfort zone every now and again, but we feel resentful of people who try to make us into someone we are not. If we are introverts, don’t try to force us to be social butterflies. If we are vegan, don’t bombard us with comments like “a little meat never hurt anyone yet.” In our relationships, it’s important to recognize the difference between an invitation to try something new and an attempt to control us by someone who doesn’t think we are good enough as we are. Here are five signs that the person you are with is trying to change you: 1. You feel put down when they make the suggestions. Somehow, no matter how charmingly given the advice is, you feel a blow to your self-esteem. It doesn’t feel like a loving gesture for your well-being, but rather like you are broken and need repairing. 2. They reward you for being who they want you to be. You know how we give a dog a bone when it is obedient? The partner who wants to change you will make you feel like the most wonderful person in the world - if you do what they want - showering you with compliments and nice treatment. 3. You are subtly punished when you are the self they don’t like. He or she won’t come right out to tell you what the reason is, but you notice whenever you do the things they dislike, they withhold affection and might even give you the silent treatment.
4. You are often compared to others. We all know that everyone is different, so why are you always being told that Susan does this or Harry does that? You are not Susan or Harry and we all are unique and have our own strengths and weaknesses. 5. You are told you don’t take constructive criticism well. This is the biggie. When you complain about your partner trying to change you or explain how uncomfortable the constant suggestions are, your partner responds by saying that you are too sensitive or stubborn to accept advice meant to help you. I emphasize this one because a truly loving partner will check themself upon hearing this, not double down on the criticism. If you recognize these behaviors, I think you should run away at full sprint, unless you want to end up a creature of someone else’s making, bitterly wondering what happened to the real you. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you need to change to hold onto a relationship. If you are not good enough, then you never will be, because the problem is with that person who is trying to change you. Find someone who loves with you with your messy, awkward, bohemian, loud-laughing self. There is someone out there who will love you as you are, and even find your foibles adorable.

College Classic’s Fastest Finish Runners had been chasing Lyndell Roberts’ Mourant College Classic Series record for 20 years, until Clif Struiken eclipsed the 10 minutes 45.3 seconds mark on Sept. 29, with 10:38.12. On Saturday, Struiken brought the curtains down on the 2018 Series with another record performance, when he stopped the clock at 10:30.96, the fastest time in the event’s 23-year history. Neil Riley followed in 10:41.86, becoming the series’ second fastest all time performer. “The goal today was to run very relaxed especially since I’ve been having some calf issues in the last few weeks and haven’t been focusing on speed,” Struiken explained. “I was just trying to get my miles in for the 10K next week and the BVI Half Marathon on December 1, and just to make sure there wasn’t additional tension building up in my calf, because my Achilles started to pull a bit, so it was all about being relaxed. Apparently, that relaxed training in the past few weeks paid off because I didn’t slow down and I was about nine seconds under my record. This, I think, is very, very good.”
Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
Struiken said time wasn’t on his mind. Instead he was focused on being able to push and running without any stress. “Often you hear the elite runners talk about a state of smooth flow, where they just run easily but fast, and I think that worked for me today, and it’s something to take into the upcoming races,” he said. Race director Stephanie Russ Penn said it was an excellent finish to the series. Organizers couldn’t have hoped for more than having the record broken by the overall champion after Irma wiped out the 2017 series. She said the race was extremely fast, with many runners seeing improved times. “It was just an excellent finale at the end of the day,” she said. “The 2018 series has been absolutely inspiring. We had one race in 2017 (because of the hurricane) and persons came out in 2018 and they made sure the series happened. Our numbers were down but they were still excellent numbers. Now that the momentum is back, I can’t wait for 2019, so I’m looking forward to bigger and better.”
