BVI Pride Kyron McMaster electrified the territory when he won the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles at the Gold Coast games earlier this year, and his story of overcoming the trials of Hurricanes Irma and Maria and the loss of his coach Dag Samuels captured the world’s attention. This week, he and other outstanding BVI athletes, including sprinter and four-time Commonwealth Games veteran Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, who made it to the semi-finals in the 100-metre; and Chantel Malone, who placed fifth in the long jump; will be honored on their home soil. The celebrations begin with a welcome home motorcade for the entire team of athletes, who will return to the Beef Island Airport today. The motor-

cade leaves Beef Island at 5pm and will take the coast road into Road Town and end at the Central Administration Building at about 5:45. “The wonderful thing about that is that the community will have an opportunity to meet and interact with Kyron and the other athletes that will be there,” explained Department of Youth Affairs and Sports Director Brenda Lettsome-Tye. The big to-do will follow on Friday, when marching bands, athletic associations and other clubs in the territory will come together for a grand parade in honor of the athletes. The parade starts at the AO Shirley Recreation Grounds at 2pm and will end at the Tortola Pier Park at about 2:30, where there will be a celebration ceremony. Everyone is welcome to join in the events. If you want to support the motorcade, meet the rest of the crew at the airport at 4:30pm. If you’re an artist, officials encourage you to share your message with the athletes on a poster during the Thursday’s motorcade or the parade Friday. You can even bring your camera to the events and grab a photo with the history-making Gold Coast team.

We Love Dads Happy father’s day week to all the dads, step-dads, godfathers, adopted dads, special uncles and other father figures. We celebrate you for a lot of reasons, here are some of the top ones: 1. Hugs. Why do dads give the best hugs? Nobody knows how to give a firm, solid hug like a dad. 2. Playtime. He’s only 8 months old but my little one already associates daddy with playtime. Whether it’s wild wrestling, tickle time, video games or sports outdoors, dad isn’t afraid to get silly and just have fun. 3. A listening ear. Dads know when to let us air out the serious stuff without casting any judgment on what we’re going through. 4. An emergency rescue. You’re stuck on the side of the road or at an airport or under a busted
pipe: Who are you calling? Probably dad, because they have the art of the rescue down pat. You might have to face a lecture about how you managed to create said disaster, but luckily that won’t be until after he’s saved you from whatever it is. 5. A different point of view. When life seems overwhelming, it’s often a dad that can offer the nugget of wisdom we’ve been missing to put life into clearer focus. 6. Dad jokes. You know the jokes that are so dumb you don’t want to laugh, but you just can’t help yourself? (A classic example is when some unsuspecting kid asks dad for a sandwich and dad responds “POOF! You’re a sandwich.”) Yep, that’s a dad joke. 7. Mr. Fix-it. Maybe he’s good with vehicles or household repairs or has a knack with electronics – when I was a broke college student, my dad saved me hundreds of dollars by cutting a piece of plexiglass after thieves had busted the quarter-panel window in my antique Civic – dads have a gift for fixing things in our lives that are broken. 8. His love is unconditional. I asked a lot of friends about what they appreciated most about the dads in their lives and the most common thing I heard back that dad always, always has his kids’ back. Near or far, no matter the circumstance, dad loves you.

Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 3: The Cracks Deepen
Bella I jumped up screaming, Pierre was so frightened and concerned that he grabbed me and rocked me in his arms. “Tell me what’s wrong, babe,” he asked. “Nothing love, just had a bad dream. Must be the scary movie you made me watched earlier,” I lied. I didn’t want Pierre to know what haunted me. What would he care anyway? It’s only even eight months since we’ve been dating, why would he want to help? Besides, he would look at me differently and things would never be the same. We were spending the weekend together. On Friday I closed the biggest deal of my career. Damonte loved my design and construction is to start right away. I went out with my coworkers to celebrate last night after work but after two drinks I excused myself and headed home. On Sunday, after Pierre left earlier than planned, I decided I was going to visit my mom. I went over by Jazz to check on her before heading out since I hadn’t seen her in a week. Wrong move! “Girl when are you going to get rid of that ugly man and pick up someone better looking? A woman of your stature should not be seen anywhere near the likes of him.” Jazzy asked or stated, I don’t even know because I wasn’t trying to hear nothing from her about Pierre. Jazz was what some people call bougie. She only dated rich men – single or taken – as long as they had money and looked good she wanted them. Like me, Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
Jazz worked very hard to get where she wanted to be. Her mom left her a cool million when she died, which Jazz used first on fashion school, then on starting her own clothing line and finally to open her first store. Jazz’s dad was still alive but he lived in Florida with his new wife. He and Jazz had a fairly good relationship, but she couldn’t stand her step mom. I don’t blame her, the lady was twenty years younger than her dad and only three years older than Jazz. Talk about finding a sugar daddy and latching on to him. “Jazz are you home?” I called out. I found her front door unlocked so I put my head in and called again. “Jazz, it’s Bella. You here?” The house was so quiet I was about to turn back, lock it, and leave when I heard a faint sobbing coming from the den. Slowly pushing the door further open, I called out to her again. There was a pause before she finally answered; “Bella don’t leave.” Jazz How could I forget to lock the door!? I thought. Bella should’ve been too caught up in her boo Pierre to think about how long it had been since she saw me up close. Oh well, now that she was here Id’ have to come up with a story. I couldn’t let her know that I was not the hardcore, got-it-together boss-lady that I project for the good of my brand. Truth was, my secrets were dark and I planned to take them to my grave, even if it killed me. 12
Lego Batman My first thought when my nephews wanted to watch this movie was “Really? Lego Batman??” I wasn’t exactly plugged in to the wave of Lego movies, video games, apps and YouTube channels, nor to the myriad of characters that Lego has licensed over the years for its toys and other entertainments. Now that I’ve watched it, I think “Yes, definitely.” In case you’re not familiar with one of the most popular superheroes ever, Batman lives in and protects Gotham City, a darker, more serious version of New York. Of course, every iteration of Batman is a little different. Lego Batman (as voiced by Will Arnett) is dark, self-sufficient, unemotional and super distant, even from Robin (Michael Cera), the way-too-adorable orphan he recently adopted. The drama of the movie starts when the Joker (Zach Galifianakis), in his latest attempt to terrorize Gotham City, tries to banter with Batman about what great enemies they are. Nah, replies Batman, he’d really rather fight Superman. Stung and in tears, the Joker retreats, only to return with a cadre of “the worst villains in the history of the universe.” The list is comically long and includes some usual suspects (The Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman), some that might be better placed elsewhere in the Lego 13
universe (Voldemort, Sauron, the Dalek), and few that just don’t make sense (Condiment Man). How will our solo hero defeat such a large and nefarious team? He tries to go ahead without help, but winds up banished to another realm called the Phantom Zone instead. After some sage advice from an all-knowing Lego block, Batman realizes that he’s going to have to build a team of his own. They may not be blood relations, but Batman calls on his chosen family: his ward Robin, his steadfast butler and advisor, Alfred (Ralph Fiennes), and the newly named Gotham City police commissioner Barbara Gordon/Batgirl (Rosario Dawson). They rally as a team and wrangle the entire city of Gotham to work together before the day is done. The cast, jokes, batcave, fight scenes, references to other Batmans, and the nods to other comic-book heroes and villains are all completely over the top, but in a fun way because the characters are all taking jabs at themselves. Parents put up with a lot of not-thatgreat entertainment for the sake of their kids, but this movie was one that a couple of young kids and as well as their parents could enjoy equally. The Lego Batman Movie is available on iTunes and other streaming services. Vol. 30, 10 / June 14 - Jun 20, 2018
Pickering’s European Bonding Session In preparation for the rigors of the 2018-19 season following last year’s 2210 mark and an Atlantic Sun Conference runner-up finish, Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles Volleyball middle blocker Sharonda Pickering wrapped up a fivecountry, 11-day tour of Europe, after plying in six games in three countries with her team, in preparation for her senior year. The tour offered a bit of history, culture and most importantly team bonding, as they prepare. The Eagles’ tour began in Budapest, Hungary, where they came up against MTK Budapest, a team of 17-18 year olds, and walked off with a four set victory, 25-23, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-10. They also won the next match, 25-20. 25-20, 22-25 and 25-15. They faced the Slovenia National Team in Maribor, lost the opener 26-28, before taking the victory, 25-21, 25-18, 2025 and 15-11 Across the border against a Croatia junior select team in Pula, they needed five sets to prevail, 25-9, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 and 15-8, in a match treated as a scrimmage. They followed up with a 20-25, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24 and 15-9 victory. They didn’t play in Vienna, Austria or Venice, Italy. “We compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference and we have fallen short by placing second for the last three years. This year, we only lost one senior, so the core of our team is basically returning for the 201819 season,” Pickering explained. “Our coach planned this trip as an opportunity for us to play more as Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
a team and be stronger as a steam as we prepare for the fall.” The trip was a good for team bonding, Pickering said. “For us as a team, we usually spend all day in class and then come onto the court in the afternoon and practice. This trip allowed us to enjoy different cites, different cultures and explore during the day while still competing in the evening. This trip allowed us to enjoy each other’s company on and off the court.” As she enters her senior year, Pickering said the trip gave her an opportunity to play against great teams and to face a different style of volleyball. It also allowed her and her team to better understand how to adjust quickly and find different ways to approach the game, and, hopefully, different ways to win. “At first, it was challenging as a team for us to adjust to a different ball game, and a few rule changes, but after a couple of points, we were able to find a good rhythm against challenging teams and to fight our way through sets,” she explained. “Our overall trip was great. We had members of our FGCU staff and family which made this trip balanced with business and pleasure. The practices that led us to these games and the games that we played helped us to be better prepared for the fall season. Nevertheless, the adventure of being in different countries, using different currencies, trying new foods and embracing different cultures made us learn a lot about ourselves and others around us.” 14

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “subgris’ that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or colum within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.
