Rally ‘Round the RelayRoundup The Queen’s Baton is on an epic trip around the world this year ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, an international sporting competition set for 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia. This week, the baton, which holds a message from Queen Elizabeth II to start the games formally, arrives in the BVI, and will be visiting several locations around the territory. Residents are encouraged to follow as much of the baton’s journey around the territory as possible, but the highlight of its stop here will be the Grand Cultural Presentation, a ceremony to send off the baton and its entourage before they continues to its next stop in Jamaica. That ceremony will take place at the Central Administration Building on Tuesday, July 4, beginning at 6pm. The evening includes local and Australian entertainment, food and drink vendors and a Coal Pot Cook-off. The baton will be formally welcomed the day it arrives in the BVI, July 3, at an opening ceremony at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park at 9am. After the ceremony ends at 10am,

the relay across Tortola begins, with carriers transporting the baton to the several stops around Road Town. From there, the baton will be driven to Sea Cow’s Bay for a presentation by the students of Ebeneezer Thomas Primary School at 11:30am and relayed to Manuel Reef Marina, before being accompanied by a flotilla of BVI sloops to Nanny Cay for sports demonstrations and a lunch break. Later, the baton will be relayed through Cane Garden Bay and catch a ride with historic sloop Endeavour to Jost Van Dyke at the end of the day. July 4 will start the baton’s trip through Virgin Gorda with a short ceremony at Walters Recreation Park in Spanish Town at 8:30am before heading up to The Baths and other notable VG stops. That afternoon, from about 4:30pm, the baton will relay from Trellis Bay through East End and Long Look. You can see the Queen’s Baton’s full BVI schedule at bviolympics.org, or track the rest of its journey around the world in real time at www. gc2018.com/qbr.

Young Medal Winners A’Keela McMaster and Ayanna Findlay—Virgin Gorda’s first athlete to win an individual medal in the NACAC Age Group Championships— joined select company when they won the 11-12 Girls Division Pentathlon team bronze in Trinidad on June 18. McMaster joined Beyonce DeFreitas, 2013; Dione Blyden, 2003; and Aliston “Al” Potter, 1997; as individual medal winners in the event. “It was difficult, but I thought it would have been easy,” said bronze winner McMaster, adding “When the Trinidad girl blew past me in the 60m, I was like, ‘what is this?’ But I realized other people were better in the High Jump, Long Jump and 800m.” With 2,190 points after four events, McMaster was tied with Anguilla’s Cardesha Pemberton heading into the 800m, the final event. “I wanted to break the tie with her and tried to run my best and noticed she was in the back of me, so I went faster, and, I nearly dropped down,” she said of her fifth place heat finish and ninth overall effort in 2 minutes, 39.79 seconds, which secured her the third place overall in her division. “I’m going to try and do better next time around, but, I don’t know what I’m going to do with that 1000m,” she said referring to the last Heptathlon event for the 13-14 division. “But, my coach will help me.” McMaster said her favorite track event is the 200m. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Findlay, who also plays Football, Softball and Tennis, said the competition was not an easy one and recalled being in 16th place heading into the 800m, which she loves, and secured a bronze medal. “That 800 really pushed me up to seventh and that was a big help for me,” noted Findlay, who is the first BVI athlete to ever win an 800m. “My last 800 was 2 minutes and 36 seconds and for that one, I ran 2:32.82, a personal best. I also like the High Jump, because I when I jump, I feel free and confident, and for the 800m, long distance is my thing. I know my strategy.” Findlay’s seventh place position coupled with McMaster’s third place, gave them the 11-12 Division Pentathlon Team bronze, with 5,180 accumulated points. They joined previous winners Dion Crabbe/Leighton Smith, 1990; Dione Blyden/ Jevonte Croal, 2003; Kanishque Todman/Britney Wattley, 2003; and J’Nae Wong/Arianna Hayde, 2011, in accomplishing the feat. Head coach/manager Ericca Frederick said the girls did the BVI proud, and that it was a great experience for the participants. “It’s all about developing the youth because you never know what event they’ll be good at in the future,” Frederick said. “I think these children should be exposed to every event, run, jump and throw, because that is what it’s all about for the youths, so I think the NACAC Age Group competition is a very good exposure for our young ones.” 10
