She contributes to the world through her story, research, teaching and motivational speeches. “I, too, want to make my mark by contributing to my society as any “normal” person would. Arbour Day The Annual Arbour Day celebration with the National Parks Trust is always a festive affair filled with art and poetry in homage to the territory’s trees, but this year will be extra special because the ceremony will be held inside the JR O’Neal Botanic Gardens. The gardens have received extensive repairs since the storms of 2017, but this will be the first time since the storms that they will be open for viewing and tours. Arbour Day in the BVI and the gardens are linked by Joseph Reynold O’Neal. The founder of the local holiday, usually held on the last Friday of November, was instrumental in establishing the national parks, including the gardens that now bear his name. Following the tradition he started back in 1953, the day always includes the planting of trees around the territory, with the ceremonial honor of the plant-

ing given to both local dignitaries as well as young BVI students. One way you can honor the late Mr. O’Neal’s tree planting tradition is by picking up a tree to plant yourself from the garden through the 30th (there will be selected trees for free and on sale in throughout the week). Mr. O’Neal and others who helped lay a foundation for plant conservation in the territory will be celebrated during this year’s Arbour Day ceremony, whose theme is “Honoring Our Roots.” The Arbour Day ceremony takes place Friday the 30th at the gardens from 10am-noon. The ceremony is also set to include contributions from local artists such as author Dr. Patricia Turnbull. Afterward, you can check out the accompanying art exhibition and tour the facility from noon to 5pm.

What If? What if you only had the rest of the year to live? What would you do differently? What if you realized that your 5 year plan wasn’t necessary and the vacation plan for 2020 would not come to fruition. What would you do with the precious time you had left if there was only 5 weeks of it at your disposal? We take time for granted, especially when young and we live as though it will never run out. We forget how valuable a moment is until we are holding the hand of a dying loved one or flying on an aircraft with turbulence. So now we are in a position to ask ourselves…what if there wasn’t much time left, how would you decide in what way to use it? How do you decide what matters most? The decisions you then make, would you make them with your head or with your heart? I suspect that for most of us, we would make some head decisions first. We would probably write a will, ensure that there is a plan or provision in place for our loved ones and maybe make some notes on how we want our body dealt with after we have taken our final breath. I think though, that the heart decisions would be the most difficult to make. The persons we need to forgive, the persons who we wronged that we need to ask forgiveness of, the people we don’t say “I love you” enough to all come sharply into focus and we want to hug our loved ones closely and reassure them of our love. We have the gift of now and this is the only thing we are sure of. We can choose what we want to take from this life, what we want to give to it, Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
what we allow to affect us and what we choose to ignore. Life does just happen to us sometimes and we are caught off guard, but we can choose to some extent how we react to certain circumstances. For the days we have left, we could choose to carefully design them. We would decide who we want to spend those precious fleeting moments with and not be with anyone just out of obligation; our time is too precious for that. We would do what makes us feel fulfilled and try to squeeze some fun and pleasure into our days. We would be kind to others because we really have nothing more to give them than the best part of ourselves and we would mostly ignore their petty behavior because we know we don’t have to put up with it for a long time. When we have no guarantees of unlimited time, the little we have becomes so precious that we do not want to waste a moment of it. Every breath we take, every drop of rain on our skin, every cry of a baby or even the smile in your partner’s eyes seem like a small miracle and we savour it as though it were a moment filled with magic. We might not have an expiration date or a looming deadline with our end, but we live day by day right now, with the knowledge that we do not own forever. Let us then live each minute, each hour and each day in a meaningful way. Life is but a gift… every second of it. What if we only had a short time…how would we live? 6

Light, Camera, Action; Part 2 Chapter 19: On The Stand
Kevin Hearing Jazz going down memory lane about her Mom today in court, made me feel so bad that I turned my back on her when she needed me the most. Now I understood why she was so protective of her heart in the beginning. I always thought she was a good side piece because she wasn’t catching any feelings. I guess she hoped having a baby would help her make peace with losing both her parents, but my neglect caused her to loose that too. I was now in court listening to Shelly on the stand and this chick is unbelievable. What she’s done to get ahead in life makes me look like a saint. Just because she never wanted to work a day in her life, she slept around. All her men had to pay, and she wasn’t cheap. Thank God that she and I only got together a few times a year. If it was constant like with Jazz, I would have done run broke. I was sitting in court with my mouth dropped open when she admitted the way she conspired to get together with Jazz’s dad. She was in town when she got the news about the famous model passing and figured that the husband would get everything and would be able to spend it on her. Even I was not that devious. When Jazz’s lawyer asked her why she waited until the passing of her husband to contact the police about the death of her husband’s ex-wife, she said that she didn’t want to put her husband through any 11
turmoil. People in the courtroom actually chuckled at that. Everyone knew that didn’t make any sense, not six months after someone’s death. Shelly I couldn’t take it anymore. It looked like Jazz wouldn’t spend a day in jail, so while I was on the stand, I let her have it. “You know why I waited so long to say anything? It’s because that spoiled little brat got everything. Imagine I married that old man, stayed with him for five years, and he turned around and left the majority of his property to her. All he gave me was $150,000! Not even the home we lived in. To top it off, she’s been sleeping with one of my side pieces for three years, and that dog thought I never knew.” I shouted in the court. The judge said that was enough, but I rambled on. “You know what the real problem was? That goodie-two-shoes never gave me the time of the day. She never even tried to get to know me. I overheard her telling her Dad that I wasn’t good for him and asking why he picked up someone so young. She can sit over there looking all prim and proper if she wants to, but I wonder if Kevin’s wife watching this case. That would serve her right to get found out.” I must have stood up or something because the next thing I knew, the court officer was hauling me out of the court. l don’t care. Now the whole world knows how I feet about her. Vol. 30, 34 / Nov 29 - Dec 5, 2018

I’ve been watching Sanaa Lathan movies for a long time, so before I even saw the trailer for Nappily Ever After, I knew I was going to watch the movie because I read somewhere that she was one of the producers. By the time the official trailer was released, I was really sold. I’m pretty sure you have seen Love & Basketball, The Wood and, more recently, The Perfect Guy. To our ladies, have you ever been under pressure to make sure that your hair is always perfect even if it means waking up before that special someone to get it done before they wake up? In this Netflix original, Violet (Sanaa Lathan) was raised believing that a lady’s hair should always be on point. Her mom made sure that she understood that there were to be no loose ends. It was Violet’s birthday and she accidently got sprayed by a neighbor’s hose, so she visited a salon to get her hair fixed right away. The hair stylist made a mistake, however, which caused Violet’s hair to begin falling out. After making a scene in the salon, Violet receives a weave to cover her now damaged hair. Later, when Violet breaks up with her long-time boyfriend, Violet begins to question how much of her happiness and identity is caught up in her hair. In a symbolic break both with the boyfriend and with her old way of 13
thinking, she decides to cut all her hair off. Afterward, a suggestion was made that she joins a support group, but that was not the move. Instead, she begins dating Will (Lyriq Bent), who owns a salon and helps Violet build her confidence in her new look. She also befriends his daughter Zoe (Daria Johns) and they quickly grow close. When Violet’s ex Clint (Ricky Whittle) stops by to collect some of his stuff from the house, he sees a side of her he never got to witness in the the two years they were together. After talking for a while, the two reconcile. Clint soon proposes and the pair begins to plan their wedding. Violet maintains a close relationship with Zoe and invites her to the engagement party. Later, Violet and Will are in a meeting with an investment company; Violet is pitching a campaign for Will’s hair care products that paints them as the tool to encourage women to see their natural hair as beautiful. Afterwards, Will says he is still salty at Violet. As viewers, we get the idea that he’s using her marketing skills just to build up his company (and bank account). It turns out, Violet doesn’t mind: she is using him too. She tells him that together, they will change the world “one head at a time.” Watch Nappily Ever After on Netflix. Half Marathon Clashes on Saturday Will Saturday’s Ogier-Deloitte BVI Sunrise Half Marathon crown stay in the BVI or end up in St. Thomas or Antigua and Barbuda? Starting at 6 a.m., from the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea, runners will meander to the turn around in Manuel Reef, for two laps of the 13.1 miles course. “After Irma last year, 65 people just got up and ran the course which showed how much the race is in demand,” race director Kay Reddy said. “Hopefully over 125 people will register for this year’s race including several Corporate Cup and Teams. This year the Corporate Challenge is set to be competitive as are both the individual male and female events.” Final registration which costs $70, will take place between 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday at the Tortola Sports Club. Antigua and Barbuda’s Kalique St. Jean, 19, who was second in 2016, is returning. “In 2016, that race was my first half, but I ran 1 hour 20,” he noted. “At that time, my personal best in the 5K was 16 minutes and 20 seconds and now it’s 15:30. I’m looking to breaking 1:20. My training has been going very well.”
Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
St. Thomas’ Shane DeGannes saw his 3-peat streak snapped in 2016 when he finished third behind Grenada’s Renon Raddix and St. Jean. “I’m looking forward to competing on Tortola,” DeGannes who’s not looking at time said. “My training this year has been a bit different so I’m just concentrating on what I have to do.” Clif Struiken who has been setting records during the 5K and 10K series this year, said he’s looking forward to his debut. “I can’t wait to race the guys from Antigua, St. Thomas and the BVI talent this Saturday,” he said. On the women’s side, in her last outing in 2016, St. Thomas’ Ruth Ann David improved her own course record by 25 seconds when she stopped the clock at 1:30.21. “I’ve won it four times and looking for a fifth,” David said. Former BVI Marathon record holder, Virgin Gorda’s Velma George, will compete in her first road race in the territory. She’s coming off running in the New York City Marathon, the 21st in her storied career.
