Anegada Ecology Celebration Did you know that Anegada is home to one of the oldest and rarest iguanas in the world? The Anegada Rock Iguana was nearly extinct when the National Parks Trust, along with partners from the Fort Worth Zoo and the San Diego Zoo, created a head start facility on the sister island. They reasoned that if most of the baby iguanas were being killed by feral cats, all they’d have to do help the native iguanas thrive is protect them until they were big enough to fend off the cats for themselves. More than 20 years later, the success of the program is inarguable, and it’s celebrated at an annual Iguana Festival. Held this year on Monday the 22nd (it’s usually scheduled to coincide with the St Ursula public holiday), it was first held in 2012. Each year, the festival highlights the hatching season of the iguanas and their release from the “head start” facility into the wild. (This year’s actual release is scheduled for Wednesday, the 24th and a handful of selected students will get the honor of doing the releasing.) Kelly Bradley, a conservation biologist, monitors the iguana population and is on island in May for the mating season, again in July when eggs are laid, and then in October for the hatching season. She says

the festival is a way to get closer to nature as well as a way for the residents of the BVI an d especially Anegada to celebrate the health of the island and the critically endangered Anegada Rock Iguana. Prior to festival day, students from the Claudia Creque Educational Centre submit drawings and essays about the iguana and the winners are announced at the end of the festival. The day starts with a 7am 1-mile fun run/ walk, followed by breakfast by Dotsie’s Bakery. After that, there will be “on your feet” games for kids to learn more about the Anegada Rock Iguana as well as Anegada’s ecosystems on the grounds of the head start facility. Throughout the day, kids will enjoy free hot dogs and adults can buy food and treats from various vendors. Later in the day the fun continues with a DJ plus there will be a special festival give-away featuring t-shirts and other items. The afternoon concludes with the announcement of the contest winners, distribution of prizes, and a trash pick-up complete with plenty of candy for the volunteer cleaners. It’s an all-day birthday party for the iguana, and everyone’s invited!

I don’t know if this will be an unpopular opinion, but for me, having a one-year-old is a lot like having a puppy. Allow me to plead my case. First off, there is the energy level. My kid wakes up chatting (not that my husband or I can understand him, but he has a lot to say) and wanting to groggily toddle around the house bumping into furniture. Throughout the day, he dances, wiggles and is even starting to run a bit. His absolute favorite game is alternate between being chased and chasing either his father or me - a game I vividly recall playing for hours in the park with a pit bull/golden lab mix I grew up with. He spins in circles. He claps his hands and stamps his little feet. It’s so much motion and activity that it sometimes tires me out to watch. Dog trainers advise frequent walks for puppies to give them exercise. I try to plan activities for my kid so that he can burn off some of his seemingly limitless energy. Then there’s the food issue. Just like a puppy, my little boy will eat anything at the moment. Mostly, I’m gratefully feeding him a variety of wholesome foods every mealtime, but I’m also stiff-arming him anytime I’m trying to eat. Just like a puppy, a oneyear-old doesn’t understand that certain food is too spicy for him, or that because he doesn’t have molars, he’s not ready for raw spinach leaves. Also, Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

as with an adorable puppy, I am too much of a sucker not to give in and let him have a bite or two of something from my plate, even if he’s already has his meal. Of course, everyone knows it’s not just food that puppies want to chew on. Hair ties, kitchen utensils, and all kinds of other household things are at risk of being chomped by the one-year-old. He loves to stand inside the playpen and gnaw on the railing. No rookie like me, his teacher quickly devised a way to attach one of his baby burpie cloths to the rail of playpen he uses there so that he chews on a clean cloth instead of directly on her furniture. My little one is also every bit as cuddly as a puppy. His favorite way to nap is nestled up against his dad. Especially in an unfamiliar setting, he loves to be carried around by one of his parents or a favorite auntie, uncle or play-cousin. Ever been tripped up by a puppy who just wants to be close to you, even when you are walking around trying to do something else? That’s me and my kid every day in the kitchen. He just wants to be close to other people. I’ve come to the conclusion that for both 1-year-olds and for puppies, cuteness is no accident. If they weren’t so adorable, we wouldn’t let them get away with half of this stuff!

Lights, Camera, Action – Part 2 Chapter 13: Patching things up
Bella Thank goodness today was not a working day and I can rest for the balance of the day after Pierre is gone. Its been three months since he showed up on my door step, but last night was the first time we had a real conversation about the things he wanted to know. When he showed up that first time, I was in the middle of dealing with Jazz and her dilemma. I asked him to give me some time and that when I was ready to talk I’d give him a call. Truth is, after the way he reacted when he found out my secret, it took those months for me to stop being scared of him. Now I’m just sitting at my kitchen island with a glass of red wine in my hand pondering the events of the last few hours. When I called Pierre at 3am, I thought he would lash out at me for the hour. To my surprise, he showed up at my door in his PJ’s. When I let him in, he walked straight up to my room, grabbed us two pillows, and lead us to my lounging area. I guess he knew it was going to be a long night might as well get comfortable. Indeed, it was. He apologized for his hospital outburst, and told Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
me over the months he had time to calm down and do some research, but the truth was that he missed me. He was also very curious about my history and what led me to my sex change. I told him how from an early age I was more interested in little girl’s stuff and that I operated like a girl instead of a boy. How I played in my mom’s make-up and wore her clothes when she was not around. I explained that I always felt uncomfortable participating on boy’s sports AI want that label. I just knew in my heart that my real sex was female and that I was attracted to men. In college I finally worked up the courage to talk to my parents about transitioning and asked them for help. My mom was always supportive, but my dad tried to convince me that this wasn’t me. He did his best to change my mind, but mom give him an ultimatum. Although I don’t think Dad would ever describe himself as happy about how I turned out, at least he gradually accepted me. Recently, he even started standing up to his friends over me. I think the fear of me committing suicide scared him, since there was another kid in my neighborhood while I was growing up that killed herself because everyone shunned her because she was gay. It’s been seven years since my official transition and though I am not at all ashamed of who I am, the way the world is set up, I preferred to keep it to myself until I found someone that I knew was in for the long run. Now, the ball was in Pierre’s court: knowing my history, would he still want to build a life with me? 12
Carly Cartel Carl Benjamin or Carly Cartel, as he’s known in the entertainment industry, was born and raised in Huntums Ghut. His love of music and knack for staying on top of the latest musical artists and styles among his group of friends was the foundation for his eventually becoming a DJ. Carly began by providing music at social outings for friends, then his hobby turned into small gigs at house gatherings and bars, which eventually turned into clubs, weddings, etc. When we caught up with Carly he told us that in his spare time he loves spending time with this family or passing the time playing a game of pool. He further stated that although is have a nine–five he also enjoys learning the different types of techniques to make himself a better DJ varying from the perfect lighting, what sound systems are the best, system engineering and crowd reactions. When we asked him what’s next on his agenda he replied, “as we say on the streets, it’s only up from here. A higher level of professionalism and continuous perfection of the music and dj’ing as a craft.” Already a household name here in the BVI, Carly aims to be a positive role model for other disc jockeys build his name more abroad. And mark your calendar: on the 31st of December, he will be at the Trellis Bay Market, Bar & Grill Old Years Party. Carly wants to encourage his fans and Limin’ Times readers that now is the time to bring BVI nightlife back to where it use to be. “Come out with your friends and significant other and chill, dance and don’t forget to show the DJs some love. We work hard, we can play hard too.” He would like to give a shout out to the promoters, bar owners, event organizers who continue to keep DJ Carly Cartel relevant. Phillip Reflects on Jr. Swimming Career Elinah Phillip ended her Jr. swimming career with a 50m semifinal berth in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last Thursday. In April, Elinah earned her 10th Carifta Games medal, making her the territory’s most prolific individual Carifta medalist in any sport. She’s the first BVI Swimming Federation athlete to compete in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, CAC Games, the FINA World Championships and FINA World Cup. “It all happened very quickly,” Phillip reflected on her competition career that began at the OECS Championships in the 9-10 Division in 2011. “I didn’t know where I was going with it to be honest, I kept going and going, doing what I enjoyed. It was fast paced, but, I learned a lot along the way.” Phillip, who attended the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China with sister Amarah but wasn’t old enough to compete, said she enjoyed every moment of the games among her peers, in Argentina. “I had a good understanding of how the system worked, so it wasn’t too hard for me to get settled in and into all the activities going on around the Youth Olympic Games Village,” noted the 18-year old, who competed in two events. “I was familiar with how it all worked since it was similar to China.” Her first action was in the 50m Butterfly, which
Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
she said was a strong swim for her, but she didn’t swim as fast as she’d like, recording a non-advancing time of 28.65 seconds. “I had to learn from it. Then I had the 50m Freestyle a couple days later, swam a lot better and made the semifinals,” she noted after stopping the clock at 26.22 seconds, then recorded 26.56 in her semis. “I didn’t swim as fast as I wanted to, but, at the end of the day, I was proud of what I did,” she said. Phillip later learned she was the only Caribbean female advancing to the semifinals and her time ranked her at No 15 of 55 competitors. “It meant a lot to me and it made me very proud,” she said. “I hope I inspired a lot of the younger generation, because know there are youngsters from the Caribbean here who won’t have another Youth Olympic Games because of the age restrictions, but I hope I inspired as many people as possible.” Prior to the YOG, Phillip competed in the FINA World Cup. Since the World Cup used a short course, a 25m pool and YOG uses the long course, a 50m pool. “The times from the World Cup would be faster, because you have more turns, which makes the swim faster,” she noted.
