The ultimate Gen Y Factor winner will be the next brand ambassador for competition sponsor Digicel, and will receive a monetary prize plus recording time at Home Grown Studio, have an original song produced by Grammy nominee Andrew “Drusky” Scott, and receive legal consultancy services from entertainment attorney Natasha Cobham. Head out and support your district, or your favorite young singer. You never know, in a few years, you could be saying “I knew them when…”
Eighteen of the BVI’s most talented young voices will take the stage Saturday May 6th to see who gets to represent their district at the Gen Y Factor finals next month. Admission is $9 for the competition, which is set to begin at 7pm and takes place at the Eileene Parsons Auditorium at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. This will be the first time an audience will be welcomed to the competition’s semi-finals, a move Department of Youth Affairs and Sports organizers hope will help the singers get more support from their fans and neighbors. “We’ve decided to open this year’s semi-finals competition to the public so that individuals can attend and support their respective electoral districts and favorite competitors,” said DYAS Director Brenda Lettsome-Tye in a press release. In addition to choosing one singer from each district, this year there will be two “wild card” slots that the judges will award to two singers they feel deserve a shot at the final. Competing Saturday are Malvern Wyke and Kathlyn Archibald-Drew representing District 1;

Follow Your Passion We all lead different lives; life’s experiences have shaped us into who we are in the here and now. Some have received stellar hands from the deck of life, others have been less fortunate. But no matter what, we each have our own tastes, desires and passions, even if they differ widely. ‘Following a passion’ is pretty a broad concept. Your passion might be an activity, a business, a group of people, or a civic cause. It can be pretty much anything you like, as long as it puts you in your happy place. In fact, your passion could be something so subtle, you barely recognize it as one; things as simple as sunset walks on the beach, reading a good book, taking care of your plants on your porch. It doesn’t have to be of major consequence, just something that makes you smile. If your passion runs towards the water and you live in the BVI, you can count yourself lucky. We have kite surfing. We have diving. We have sailing. And once you get on a boat, the spin-offs are practically endless: snorkeling, kayaking, SUP’ing, racing, cruising, etc. Your passions don’t have to cost a lot--or anything. As an artist, I don’t limit myself to storebought canvas. In fact, I paint on just about any material I can get my brush on. I write, too. Besides here and a couple of other publications, I write poetry, which has been fairly well received across the board. I sail a lot, (OPB- other people’s boats) so Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

that helps. I swim and snorkel whenever I can (more in the summer months, the Caribbean Sea in the winter is still a tad chilly for my little bones). So find what’s right for you. Wherever your interests may lie, find what floats your boat. Be it an outdoor activity, a sport, a creative endeavor, or just something you do within your house. Run with it; take it to that level that brings you a smile.

Secret Girlfriend Dear Koren, I’m in a relationship with a man that seems to be the world’s best-kept secret, and I am starting to get suspicious. In the first 3 months, he said things like he is a private person and doesn’t like people in his business. I respected that because it was new and we didn’t know how it would go so it didn’t make sense to just tell everyone. Now it’s been almost a year, I have met only one friend and not one family member. If we bump into anyone, I’m not introduced at all, or introduced just with my name. I know he is not married, so why am I being hidden? – Suspicious and hurt
introduced a girlfriend before and the family ran her off. Some men introduce five women to their family in the space of a year, so meeting his family in and of itself is not an indicator of how he feels about you. If you go out in public together, then that’s a good sign. I suggest you ask him why he hasn’t introduced you to his family or best friends and hear what his explanation is. He might have a good reason. If you are not satisfied, you could tell him you would like to meet the people who are important to him, but the final decision is up to him. While I know you want to feel that he is so proud of you that he can’t contain himself from shouting from the rooftops, we must understand that people are different. Consider whether he treats you with love and respect and if the relationship is nurturing and makes you feel really good about yourself and him. If the relationship gets more serious in time but you still feel hidden and like your concerns are ignored, then you should consider whether this man truly takes you seriously.
Dear girlfriend, I understand how you feel. Most women after the second date, share the good news with two or three friends who can’t wait to meet this lucky guy. Certainly by six months, he has met all our friends and coworkers and our entire family knows we are off the shelf because they can’t find us anymore; and some of us even start looking for apps that combine our pictures to imagine what our future kids will look like. Women do things differently from men; that could be part of the reason you are feeling like this. I must admit, close to a year is a long time to not meet any family members or be introduced as his girlfriend, but there are a number of reasons he may not want to do so. Maybe he is just not ready and waiting to see if the relationship will become more serious. It could be that he is just private as he says, or not close to his family, or that the opportunity just hasn’t come up yet. Maybe he has

A Weekend With The FamilyBy I must start off by saying I’m a huge Marques Houston fan from his days playing Roger on Sister Sister and in Immature/IMX, so when this film was released I watched it the first chance I got. In the film, young attorney Travis Stankershet (Marques Houston) is secretly dating his boss John Clancy’s (Dorian Wilson) daughter Courtney (Karrueche Tran) whom he intents to marry. Travis doesn’t tell Courtney he is working for her dad because he wants to move up the ranks in the firm without her help. We open with a court scene in which two of John’s young attorneys, Travis and Joey (J-Boog), in court trying to prove they have what it takes to make it on top. While the firm breaks for the weekend, Travis gets home to find out that Courtney planned a surprise trip. Only when he arrives to his destination does he realize they aren’t staying in a hotel. Courtney then reveals the full plan: the couple are to spend the weekend with her family. Dreading facing his boss, Travis takes forever to get out the vehicle. The weekend happens to be a traditional Korean holiday, which Courtney and her family celebrates to honor her mom Sue Clancy (Susanne Whang) who is Korean. This is not the only weekend surprise for
Marques Houston & Karrueche Tran Travis. His girlfriend also invited his ghetto-fied family Nip (Wendy Raquel Robinson), Dingo (Clifton Powell) Sergeant (Black Thomas) Stankershet to join them at her parents home. With the two families being so different, it’s no surprise the weekend is a disaster from the beginning. Travis and Courtney try their best to hold on to their relationship while their two families wage war in an explosion of hilarity. It’s strict, traditional, Korean customs versus a backwards, country way of life. In the end, Travis must find a way to make the two families peacefully co-exist long enough for him to propose to the woman he loves. What will it take for Mr. Clancy accept Travis as his daughter’s hubby-to-be? Find out by watching A Weekend with the Family on Netflix or DVD.

Cricket’s Jazzy Scorekeeper Jasmattie Yamraj joined the late Naomi Daniel as the only women to have scored BVI Cricket Association matches. Being a scorer wasn’t in per plans. Last year, Jadid Khan approached Yamraj and asked if she’d be interested it a try. She did and has been scoring ever since, using the computer and now online. “He was the one that got me into it and I just continued from there,” Yamraj said. “I didn’t do much [paper] scoring at all. I just went straight into the online scoring.” She said scoring on the book takes too long. “You have to account for each ball in several places whereas on the computer it does it for you so it’s quick and easy to learn the computer,” she said. “It allows for the current run rate to be tabulated quickly. When the second side goes in, you can see what the current run rate is to see if the other team is ahead. There’s a regular score sheet like a book would have but then it gives you summaries. I can pull up one tab to show a comparison where each team is at the same time in the game.” She explained if one team batted 20 overs and at the end of five overs she wanted to see Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
where they were, she can make a comparison. A real-time graphic is provided showing how each team is batting on a graph and where each wicket would have fallen. When asked how challenging it is scoring with all the men buzzing around her head, the certified level one coach said sometimes it’s challenging to focus. “Sometimes in the area where the teams are it gets loud and everybody who is batting as they come in, right away they want to know what their score is and sometimes it’s not possible to do it at the same time,” she explained. “They ask a lot of questions about how many runs a person have, but I have to really focus in on what the umpires are signaling to ensure you put the runs in the correct place, extras where they belong and ensure that the wickets taken are recorded correctly. So it could be a bit of a challenge but so far, I think I’m doing pretty ok.” Yamraj said she enjoys scoring. “Sometimes I wish I could get back my Sundays,” she chuckled. “But, at the same time, I get pleasure from doing it because I like numbers and I like the sport and even though I like seeing how the game is played, the various analysis stimulates my brain.” From a statistical standpoint and the various stats generated, one is able to get an idea of partnerships, how long someone stayed in the wicket, the number of balls faced, 4s, 6s. “Currently I have all the score cards updated on crickinfo.com that has all the stats of players—batting, bowling, fielding,” she said. “It’s not a difficult task. Just time consuming.” 14
The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. Vol. 29, 36 l May 4 - May 10, 2017
