Small Island Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 students, $20 at the door and can be purchased at Lady Sarah’s, Island Roots and House. Please note that Small Island is not recommended for anyone under 16 due to the use of strong language. Due to the fact of the time frame the play depicts, at times the characters will use language which is racially offensive.
The BVI Theatre Series will re-commence with their first show this Saturday, October 5th at the HLSCC Auditorium. Small Island is based on the book of the same name by Orange Prize-winning writer, Andrea Levy. In the theatre adaptation, the journey embarks from Jamaica to Britain through the second World War to 1948, the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots.

Multiple Partners Dear Koren, I know this will seem like an unusual question, but in other cultures and in times past, men had more than one wife and the women lived in harmony. Why can’t we do the same now? Why must women fight so much? Dear writer, First of all, if we were born and raised in that culture, it might be seen as normal, most of us would consider it unpleasant. Of course, we know of dozens of men and women who practice having multiple relationships, but we wouldn’t embrace it as good moral behavior. Here are 5 reasons why I do not think multiple relationships simultaneously is a good idea in our setting: 1. The dishonesty, secrecy and stealth required. It’s not worth it the amount of energy that has to be expended to lead a double or triple life. Even if the two or three lovers were aware of each other, one still has to juggle and balance out time spent with each to avoid, jealousy, bitterness and resentment. Most men are barely equipped to handle one relationship effectively, so just imagine the disaster of keeping three persons happy. 2. The health risks. Many persons who think they are in a committed relationship choose not to take certain precautions, which leads them to expose all of their partners to whatever the others have. This is unsanitary and, even more importantly, it’s dangerous. 3. The expenses. Two birthdays, two anniversaries and two everything. Besides, who does he take out for Valentine’s? Even if he can afford it, each one might start demanding more and more to ensure her car is Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

bigger or her heels taller which means his money would be pouring into a basket with no bottom. 4. Poor role modeling. How does it look to children that we can’t make up our mind, so we just take both? We teach them that life is not about respect and being content but taking whatever you want, regardless of how it hurts someone else. Our actions don’t teach them to make healthy choices, but rather to be greedy. They don’t learn from us how to focus on needs over wants. 5. It pits women against each other. At a time when we are focusing on respect and the rights of women and girls, we need to stand together and not fight each other like savages. We need to do unto others as we would like done to us and give our sisters the space to let their relationships blossom without our interference.

Seven Deadly Sins Envy
A desire to have/posses/desire things belonging to someone else. Dominique and Katherina both live in the same neighbourhood and attend the same high school. Katherina, who moved in over the summer, quickly befriended Dominique and the girls got close. While both girls belonged to good middle-class families, Dominique had a problem. “Hey Katherina, did you see I found the pink shirt that you were wearing last week?” Dominique asked as the girls were in Dominique’s room hanging out. “Oh, you did?” Katherina replied. “Yea girl, I keep telling you, you have a great fashion style. Can you give me some pointers please, instead of me trying to copy everything I see you wear?” Dominique pleaded. The truth is, Dominique felt that she was better than Katherina and felt that anything Katherina had, she never quite deserved it. She had to have it herself to prove that Katherina wasn’t the only one that could afford nice things. Both of Dominique’s parents were lawyers while Katherina’s mother was only married to a man with money. The ladies continued to bond and share secrets for the remainder of the day. Wednesday Morning “Hey Christian, are you going to Brian’s party Friday night, if you don’t have a date can we go together?” Dominique asked Brian at his locker. “Sure Dom, but are you not going with ya’ girl Katherina?” Christian stated more than asked.
“Not this time, Brian has the biggest parties and I don’t want to be stuck with a girl. Besides we both decided to find our dancing partners early,” Dominique responded.

********* “Dominique, I saw you talking to Christian, did you put in a good word for me?” Katherina asked Dominique as she walked down the halls over to her friend’s locker. “First of all, good morning to you, and yes, he said he would take you to the dance,” Katherina told her friend. “Good looking out girl, so now to find you a date and find us an outfit,” Katherina said as she interlocked hands with her friend before they headed off to class. Friday night - Two hours before the party Both friends were at their homes getting ready to make their grand appearance to the biggest high school party of the year. They decided to meet up there with their dates instead of going together as usual and also surprise each other with their choice of outfits. Katherina was somewhat happy about the suggestion when Dominique made it, because she was tired of her trying to get everything in her Cont. on pg 15
Aladdin I assume by now that most of our readers have caught on to the popular trend in the film industry lately. Just in case you haven’t – many movies are being remade and some of Disney’s greatest classics are not on the exemption list. Earlier this year, Aladdin was released. I can’t remember exactly why I never made it to the theatre to see it, but I finally got to over the weekend. Now let me tell you straight up, I’m not so much a fan of the cartoon version, but the remake featuring Will Smith was added to my must-see bucket list of movies. More or less, the remake’s storyline trails the original, but without Genie (Will Smith) and Aladdin’s monkey, I probably would’ve fallen asleep watching it. But, like I tell our readers all the time, everyone has their own taste, so go and see the movie for yourself. When Aladdin begins, we see a family sailing the waters and the Captain about to tell the young sailors a story that happened not too long ago. As the movie continues, Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and a girl (Naomi Scott) try to escape as they are being chased by what appear to be palace guards. Once they succeed in escaping, the pair sit and have a conversation which includes her lying to him about her true identity. After sneaking into the palace to see the girl he thought was the helper of the princess, he encounters Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) and his guards. Jafar then takes Aladdin to a cave of wonders and gives him specific instructions. 13
When the task is completed, Aladdin’s monkey causes an error and soon, Aladdin realises that Jafar is only using him. He then discovers a lamp, and while rubbing the dust away, out pops a genie. Genie ends up giving Aladdin and his monkey a whole performance before Aladdin realises what is happening. Of the three wishes he is granted, his first one (or was it really a first wish?) is for Genie to get them out of the rapidly collapsing cave. Next, he wishes to be turned into a Prince so Princess Jasmine would like him back. Upon arriving at the palace, the Sultan, Princess Jasmine’s dad (David Negahban) gives his signal for the Prince to come into the palace. Later that night they throw a party for the guest and everyone is having a good time. Eventually Jafar and his nosey parrot realise who the “Prince” is and how he got it done. Jafar then wickedly reveals the “Prince’s” true identity and also gains control over the lamp and the genie. His first wish is to be made the Sultan but he is soon convinced that isn’t good enough before requesting his third and final wish – to be made into an all-powerful genie. Well he cooked his goose on that wish. Ever heard of the saying, be careful what you wish for? I bet he regretted that wish as soon as he realised what the results were. Want to see Aladdin? It can now be streamed on iTunes. Vol. 31, 24 / Sept 26 - Oct 2, 2019
What They Say About Ceres Carrot Bay 10K While Hurricane Jerry wiped out last weekend’s Fraser Basketball League and the Mourant College Classic Series opener on Virgin Gorda, 25 runners and a walker participated in the Ceres Juices 10K Series race in Carrot Bay, the most scenic short run on Tortola. What did some of them say? Debutant, Alton Bertie, assessed the course after finishing 13th in 56 minutes and 14 seconds on his debut. “This course is extremely tough, it’s basically all terrain, because you have nice flat roads, different variations of hills, then you have rough terrain, it is seriously difficult, very challenging,” he pointed out. “It’s a really good run and a really good workout.” It was winner Neil Riley’s first time in the race, covering the course in 44:56. “It was horrible, really horrible,” he said. “Going out, not too bad, but coming back, the heat, the humidity and those hills just sapped you. You think you’re nearly done and you got another hill left. People had warned me about this one. I didn’t respect it as I could have and I put myself in the hurt locker a little bit.” Katrina Lindsay was the top woman in 48:30. “It was nice to be running it and not have (Hurricane) Jerry interrupting it,” she said. “It was a beautiful day for it, running on the way out and then you hit the hills and that’s when you start to feel it. I wasn’t sure how to run it as I’d been training more for the One Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
Mile and 2-Mile races. I was trying to keep a steady pace and not push it because you know you had a next hill coming.” Caroline Sorrentino who placed ninth in 53:09 and was the second woman, was among three first time entrants in the race. “I thought it was a really good course, the hills were very challenging, but it felt a lot shorter once you got to the turnaround point than I expected, so it was a very good challenge, I enjoyed it,” she noted. “It was a really good run and there were a lot of good runners out so it was nice to be running amongst them.” Lennon DaBreo shared his experience after covering the 6.2 miles in 57:31 on his debut. “The hills are a really nice touch because I’m good on the hills, but the guys, they got me on the flat and heading downhill,” he said. “I pass a few people going uphill, but they always take back that gap going downhill and on the flat.” Second placer Julius Farley who has run the race in 40:34 before, said it was tough race. “I don’t know if it’s that I’m not training that much, but this seemed like the hardest race I’ve ever done,” he explained. “Compared with the (Tortola) Torture, I think this was equally hard.”

Fast Fiction
As Katherina walked into Brian’s backyard where the party was being held, her mouth dropped to the floor. There was Dominique dancing all over Christian and in the same outfit that she was wearing. “WTH!” Katherina thought to herself. “Why is she here with the boy I like and how did she come in the same outfit as me?” In a rage Katherina walked over to her backstabbing friend and began yelling at her. She demanded answers, but the response she got made her run out of the party in tears instead. Never dance with the devil expecting the moves to be fair.

wardrobe. She didn’t mind dressing like her friend sometimes but they were not twins, she wanted her own style. She actually had her outfit from a week ago, one she never showed Dominique in the hope that she wouldn’t go out and buy a replica of it. It was now 9pm and Christian hadn’t showed up to pick up Katherina, so she decided she was not going to miss out by staying home because of a boy. 15
