Born and raised in the BVI, Angelica Percival is the owner and face behind You’Nique Treazures. She grew up watching her grandmother and aunt throwing it down in the kitchen. “I always knew an aspect of food would be my calling,” Angelica said. The idea to open You’Nique Treazures stemmed from the lack of variety of treats being offered at parties and functions. After attending various parties and noticing the décor excelling but treats remaining basic, Angelica thought about doing something to spice things up. With a background and passion for baking and cooking, she researched, educated herself and perfected her skills to bring You’Nique Treasures to the public. The name of the company stuck with her as she describes herself as a very creative and unique person. Angelica strives for perfection, being well organized and detail-oriented, she is very passionate about what she does and guarantees customers top of the line service. “I want to be fully in control of my own business, future and have security of a reliable income for my family. I’ve also overcome many hurdles in my life. Watching my company grow and seeing it expand gives me inspiration,” she told Limin’ Times.
Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
Her biggest challenge as an entrepreneur she said, was getting her supplies, because of limitations on what she can purchase locally. “Due to limitations of edible treat supplies, I have to outsource 90 percent of my products, which is very expensive for a small business owner in regards to shipping fees,” she noted. Angelica expressed that when it comes to being a female entrepreneur, one pro is that women do not give up, because we are good at multitasking and when roadblocks appear, we find a way to get over or around it. The con for her is, balancing business and family. She sometimes finds herself torn between commitments to her family and her business. On advice to persons who would like to start their own business, she advised persons to write down their business plan, including their target audience, products and services being offered. “Also invest in your craft, attend training and classes, anything to better your craft,” the young entrepreneur expressed. She also explained that it was important to research the industry persons are entering. “Understand where you want to go with your business and who your target audience is and how your business can be a resolution to their needs,” she added.

Very often, we complain that we are bored and that there is nothing to do or even for our children to do, if there is not a scheduled event to attend. Over this past weekend, I spent some time with my daughter and at the end of the day I was happy and content to see the smile on her little face. What was to be a ‘mommy pampering time day’ turned out to be a mom and daughter day instead. After preparing to leave the house alone, I had to get her stuff ready to leave too. Since the rain came, we lazed around the house not in any rush, just to watch the weather and see if it would ruin our day or whether we could still head out. When we finally left the house, our first priority was visiting a few stores to get some last-minute items that she and her brother needed for the official start of school. After a few hours of shopping, we ended up at the hair salon because mommy desperately needed to get something done to her hair. Her thinking that she would have to sit and wait on me to finish, ended up turning out to be a treat for her too. She got her hair washed and braided for the school week!

Now let me tell you, it’s not the first time she got her hair washed, as I’d taken her before but seeing that her hair is normally washed before mine, she would have to sit and wait until I was complete for us to go (she complains about waiting). When her stylist was finished with her, she was all smiles. Just in case you were wondering, yup, she was ready to go as soon as she was done, not caring whether my hair was finished or not. It wasn’t until we got home that I noticed that she loved her hair because she ran and got her hair tied and covered it without me even asking. She couldn’t risk her hair getting messed up before school on Monday. At times, we make a fuss about things when in reality, it’s the little things that matter the most. I haven’t had a mother and daughter moment in forever and I enjoyed the fact that something as little as being with me and getting her hair done could put such a huge smile on her face. In case you were wondering whether I have moments with my son, I do. He’s much older than his sister so he gets to go to more places; besides it’s true what they say, boys cling to their mothers because once he’s home he is talking mommy to death.

Heal The Pain How You Caused It Mary and her husband Thomas had an argument on Tuesday morning and because he was frustrated, he shouted at her and told her she was annoying and a pain in the “you know where”. She left for work feeling hurt and disappointed and did not have a good day. He went to work and felt a bit guilty because he knew he had over-reacted. So instead of going to play dominoes with the guys like he usually does on Tuesday evening, Thomas went straight home after work and prepared a dinner of mashed potato and salmon. He wanted her to come home to her favorite meal and in his mind that was his way of expressing love. Mary came home and saw the dinner and had mixed feelings. On the one hand, it was nice to not have to go into the kitchen and she appreciated his thoughtfulness, but on the other hand, his words kept ringing in her ears…” you are annoying and a pain in the…”. Did he still feel that way? How long has he felt that way? What if he meets someone else who he does not find to be annoying? These questions raced through her mind as she ate his meal. 11
What Mary would have liked, was for him to say to her “…I’m sorry I said those things. We both are imperfect and sometimes we will irritate each other, but I love you and do not want to hurt you.” He bruised her with his words and his words were what would have effectively healed that bruise. Some of us are more comfortable expressing our love with our actions and that’s okay sometimes, especially if our partners know that’s who we are. Some people express their love in touch, by giving gifts or by doing other actions that make life easier for their partner, like washing their car or giving them space when needed. However, when we have verbally hurt someone by saying cruel words, it’s always best to say I’m sorry; you can explain why you reacted that way, but take responsibility for your words. The actions that follow as a way of making up, would then be better received. *********************** Send your comments and questions to askkoren@live.com. I love hearing from you. Seven Deadly Sins Greed Intense and selfish desire for something; wealth, power, food Derek observed his surrounding before he stepped out the elevator into the parking garage. He had been receiving phone calls with no one responding on the other end for a month now and had been watching over his shoulder ever since the third call. If he didn’t make so many shady deals his mind would be at ease but apparently, he never heard the saying, he who wants it all, gets none. When Derek was 16, he joined the drug game and by time he was 25 he had already opened three successful nightclubs. After reaching this far, you would think he would leave but he was great at double crossing people and he wanted a luxurious lifestyle. Just as he was pulling into his driveway, he received a text from an anonymous number ‘How long do you think you can run?’. He pulled his heat out his briefcase and decided not to go into his parking garage. He viewed his security system on his phone and watched his surroundings to make sure he was alone. His neighbours appeared to be having dinner on their front porch and there were some kids further down the street on their bikes. Seeing that it was only 7pm on a Friday evening, he relaxed a bit and got out his vehicle but still held his heat in his hand. He wanted to be ready just in case.
Derek was scheduled to make an appearance at one of his clubs tonight, and as usual he entered the back way and headed straight to his office before going out into the crowd. Making his way through the crowd, he greeted his regulars and stopped to take pictures with those who wanted to be seen. He loved the attention, it made him feel like he was important, and it also fed his ego. Throughout the night, he got the same voiceless calls, but he paid his phone no mind until he got a text saying watch your back. Obviously, this person didn’t have anything better to do than to waste minutes texting and calling him for a month now. The weekend was over, and he was now at his office going over the events for all his clubs for the next few months. He had people to handle different things, but he had the final say. Derek had just gotten out of a meeting with another promoter for a huge event. He laughed as the gentleman left thinking that he had won. There was to be a launch of a new drink in a few weeks and the promoters wanted to use all three off Derek’s clubs for the official launch parties. They were trying

to get one of the bars in addition to the VIP bookings. For a club with three bars and VIP seating, one of each didn’t seem like a bad idea. The promoter was also paying to rent the place and for the entertainment too but being the person that Derek was he wanted a piece of the action, and for what? He had no kids as he didn’t want any and he also was not married. A few months later… Because he wasn’t touched, Derek stopped looking over his shoulder and had gotten even more arrogant and boastful about his doings. He was basking in the glory of seeing

his face all over about having the best clubs with the best entertainment, then he got a call for him to meet the mystery person at his club now or else. He packed his heat and left his office with the attitude that he was about to take down some lil punk. Truth was, they only wanted him out of his office. The 6 o’clock news that day reported that a well-known club owner was gunned down in the parking garage by unknown persons.

Mourant College Classic Series Starts Saturday The second Saturday in September means one thing – runners from across Tortola will be heading to Paraquita Bay to kick off the 24th Mourant College Classic Series on Saturday morning, starting at 7 a.m. “Coming off last year which was awesome in terms of really kicking things back into gear after all that we [went] through [with] the hurricanes was awesome,” Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn said. “This year, I’m excited that the momentum has continued to build and that persons are gearing up for the series as usual. We’ll have our usual four races on Tortola at the Paraquita Bay campus and we’ll have three races on Virgin Gorda at the Virgin Gorda Center.” The race director said that she’s hoping this year, with things being a little more normal, she can see an increase—especially in the teams for both Primary and Secondary Schools. “That’s one of my major goals this year, to see those areas revitalized because for the last couple years, they have been declining,” Russ Penn noted. “The reality is, the feeder of most sports is these younger legs. So, I’m hoping to see a revitalization in that area. I anticipate seeing the normal numbers in other areas and other open categories. It’s just that time of the year again, and I’m excited to be kicking off on Sept 14.” The Virgin Gorda leg kicks off on Sept 21 with the first of three races and Russ Penn said she has
been in conversation with the schools and trying to get the community involved and allowing it to be a staple within the community, to help people to move and think about being fit and moving for life. It was an electrifying 2018 series as Clif Struiken demolished Lyndell Roberts’ 23-year-old course record of 10 minutes 45.3 seconds that stood since 1997, running 10:38.12 in the second race, then brought the curtains down on the series with 10:30.96. “This year, I don’t think I’m going to get anywhere near that record,” Struiken said. “I hope to get at least close, but that was a good pace. I really focused on that race last year so this year, my focus is somewhere else. I’m hoping to do well. My goal is to do well in the Deloite-Ogier BVI Sunrise Half Marathon, get my time under the 1:20 mark.” Women’s champ Katrina Lindsay is focused on Meriel Steadman’s 12:09.11 time from 2011. “As the races went on last year, I was gradually getting closer and closer—there was still a bit to go – but then it’s certainly something to aim for and this year, I’m healthy so hopefully in the races, I can get better and better and get closer to the record,” Lindsay explained. “I’m still working with Lemiel (Hodge) and gauging me on the sessions and the things to do, so I think both of us working together is helping.”
