Vol. 30, 1 l Aug 31 - Sept 6, 2017

Happy Birthday Limin Times! Those early issues covered local sports: I found some Virgin Gorda basketball coverage by Bryan Penn, plus an article about the race now known as Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta, but then simply called the Wooden Boat Regatta, which was part of a since-discontinued Jost Van Dyke carnival. And there are features about student artists, benefits for BVI schools, and profiles of visiting calypsonians. To me, the most striking differences between those early Limin Times and today’s relate to changes in technology. In the late ‘80s, advertisers included businesses and services now pretty much obsolete, like VCR repair and sales, video rental businesses, and shops where you could get your photos developed from film. The ‘90s brought ads for improved tech like cellular phones (a flip phone cost $499 in 1998!), and websites on this great new thing called the world wide web. These days, Limin Times is in on the improved technology. We’re online, on your favorite social media channels, and we even have an app. I can’t even imagine where the next 30 years might take us!

This issue marks the beginning of a new publishing year for the Limin Times – our 30th! To celebrate the milestone, I dug some issues out of the archives to share what’s changed over the years with today’s readers. In many ways, Volume 1 looked a lot different. With its 5-and-a-half by 4-inch page style, roughly half of the 20-page book was devoted to the local television schedule. It was also almost entirely black and white, with “spot color,” just one color, reserved for the front and back of the book. In the early years, this particular space was devoted to a column called “That’s Life,” written each week by then-publisher Paul Backshall. The slice-oflife pieces still feel relevant to me, covering everything from how the BVI was coping post Hurricane Hugo, to the way living on a small island can leave you feeling in a rut, to the confusing policies of island banks. Of course the Limin Times was then, as now, primarily a reflection of BVI arts and entertainment. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Mundo Softball Tourney Set Unfortunately, Mundo died in May. The Softball Association named its next tournament in his honor, and, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday with an opening ceremony, the association will call ‘play ball’ on the Raymundo “Mundo” Boynes Memorial Softball Tournament. “We’re doing this tournament in his honor for his contributions to softball throughout the Virgin Islands,” Shamora Penn said. “We have St. Thomas male and female teams; Tortola male and female teams and a male team from St. Croix coming over. We’re inviting everyone to come out and enjoy a full weekend of softball action in the BVI.” Games will kick off at 7:30 pm with GPM of St. Thomas and That’s Your Problem of Tortola. Game two begins at 9:30 pm featuring GM All Stars vs Llacos of St. Croix. The first of seven games scheduled for Saturday will commence at 9 am and should end around 9 pm Sunday’s games will be determined based on the Saturday’s results. “This tournament has been held annually for a number of years on St. Croix. A few months back, St. Croix hosted the tournament and it was also held on St. Thomas and now it’s Tortola turn to have it in the BVI, and in November, it will be going back to St. Croix,” Penn explained, noting that they have decided to name the Tortola leg in honor of Boynes. “The tournament has four male teams and three female teams.” Saturday’s action will kick off with St. Thomas’ ENVP vs That’s Your Problem at 9 am. Games are scheduled to be played every two hours thereafter, with the final game tipped to start at 9 pm.

Part of the importance of this weekend’s Raymundo “Mundo” Boynes Softball Tournament at the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park is giving our sportsmen and women their flowers while they are living. Mundo played softball for more than 30 years in both the USVI and BVI, playing in both leagues simultaneously. He won championships in both leagues simultaneously as well. Revered BVI pitcher Bert “Bigman” Henley recently told me that that Mundo felt hurt he had never been formally recognized for his contributions to the sport. At the 2015 Virgin Islands Triple Crown at the Ellis Thomas Downs, I interviewed Mundo and featured him in all my platforms including the Limin Times. Every time he saw me thereafter, he thanked me for writing about his contributions to softball. He had such wonderful feedback from the stories. “I had my times. I had my good times and I had my bad times,” he reflected during a 2015 interview, “But, I had better times than bad times.” Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
