Celebration of Virgin Islands History and Heritage

This Friday the public is invited to another Old Government House Museum fundraiser. The original structure of the Old Government House Museum dates back to the 1800s, but it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1924. The present structure was built on the same site and became the home of Commissioners, Presidents, Administrators and Governors until 1999. When the new Government House was built, the old structure was transformed into a museum displaying a range of high end furniture, historical documents, and other odds

and ends from throughout the territory’s history. It was also a popular destination for student groups and tourists alike prior to its destruction in the 2017 storms. The museum has an important place in the history and culture of the people of the Virgin Islands as a place of purposeful activity: it hosted official functions, social and charitable gatherings, and Royal visits, all of which engaged the local community. On Friday, His Excellency the Governor Augustus Jaspert and Mrs. Millie Jaspert invite everyone to a candlelit reception in the Old Government House Gardens at 6pm. The signature event will also feature a unique exhibition of Virgin Islands arts and heritage, music by renowned local artists, delightful drinks and canapes, and a live auction. Admission is $80, with proceeds supporting the museum’s rebuild. Tickets are available at the Governor’s Office. For more information, please call 468-3501.

Island Romance On the most romantic day of the year, we are blessed to live in one of the most romantic locations on the planet. Just think about how the idea of honeymoons are marketed by travel professionals: candles, flowers and totally secluded beaches. Even now, with visitors crowding many of our shores, we’re blessed to have a ton of out-of-the-way spots to get cozy with your sweetheart. Although my beach trips are more babyfriendly than romantic these days, I can vouch for the relative quiet and privacy of places like Long Bay Beef Island and even Josiah’s Bay Beach. As popular locations for swimmers and surfers, you’d think you would have to fight for a patch of sand. Thanks to our still apparently healthy beach vegetation (sea grapes and other plants), it’s still easy to find a shady spot to sit and take in the scenery and the company. Why are beaches considered so romantic? Maybe it’s because as the world places more demand on our time and energy, the beach offers a semblance of escape. It’s certainly a visually beautiful place

to be. It could be the sounds that the sea and the breeze make that so many people miss out on hearing stuck indoors or in a city. Or, maybe it’s just that clever marketing. If you’re not afraid to move around while you “get away,” hike is where it’s at. Again, even on popular trails like the ones at Sage Mountain and Shark Bay, your sweetheart is probably going to be the only other person you’ll see all along the trek. Researchers say quality time is the key to a lasting relationship, and you can’t beat the BVI’s various trails for peaceful tranquility. Or, for the more water-loving couples, you can opt for getting a good core work out with your beloved. A day kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding can serve as both a romantic outing and an excuse to hang out together in your swimsuits. The best way to dial up the romance on anything is, of course, to do it at night. The moon is almost full on Thursday, so grab your partner and go howl at it. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Romantic Dinner Spend some quality time with your love over dinner at Pusser’s Marina Cay or Pusser’s at Myett’s. Both locations will have some special Valentine’s Day dinner options like Anegada Lobster Thermidor from 6pm. (Check out the special menu on page 2). They recommend making a reservation: call 494-3897 for Marina Cay or 495-4554 for Myett’s. ___________________________________________

Real Love In Honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re re-printing this classic Ask Koren on the cold hard truth about love. Romantic comedies, family sitcoms and lovey novels have given us a lot of unrealistic expectations. The guy is handsome, the woman beautiful and, after a bit of playing hard to get, the hero captures her heart and they live happily ever after. In real life, happily ever after does not mean the absence of arguments, heartbreak and pain. Instead, it means that the couple will be committed enough to keep creating more happily ever afters. So here’s a bit of a reality check for all of us: Life doesn’t get easier but love can get stronger. Between bills to be paid, losing jobs, sickness and all the other things that fall into the latter category of “for better or for worse,” reality can hit us some hard blows. Let the challenges draw you closer by getting a front row seat to your partner’s strengths, putting your heads and hearts together to strategize, plan and figure things out as the team you are. If you do, these trials can strengthen, rather than weaken, your love. The honeymoon doesn’t last forever. The hotel suite and the sweet words are a great start, but you will eventually have dirty dishes, a yard to be cut and noisy children who eat everything in sight. But navigating real life together can create beautiful mo-

ments too, like knowing at the end of the day, that “I am his/hers and he/she is mine.” People change over time. The person who was once patient and kind and did everything to please you, now might someday stop making so much of an effort. He or she might be getting older, grumpier and facing their own life changes. Be patient and don’t try to keep your partner in a mold. Allow them to grow and shift your understanding to the new reality. It takes two to tango. No matter how much you try to fix a relationship, you can only fix yourself and try to create a pleasant environment. If the other person is not equally committed to repairing the relationship, your efforts will be futile. Know when to accept defeat. Forgiveness is a pill that’s bitter in the mouth, but sweet in the belly. As difficult as it is to get past hurts that cut right down to your soul, it is necessary for the survival of the relationship. Moving forward means acknowledging the pain, not

Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

12

bringing it up every chance you get. Many relationships are worth saving, if partners can be forgiving. Love can be messy and painful but beautiful and inspiring. In spite of all the challenges, true love really is worth it because overcoming the hard times makes the good times all the sweeter.

I read that Lady Bird was originally titled “Mothers and Daughters.” I’m very glad the makers decided to change it, because the story of this movie is very specific to this particular motherdaughter pair, but I get why that was the starting title. The relationship between Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) and her mother Marion McPherson (Laurie Metcalf ) is the linchpin of the whole movie. Both women give great performances, and in fact Saoirse (pronounced like Ser-shuh, right Irish friends?) even received a Golden Globe for her performance in 2017. To me, the skill is in that very familiar mix of love, obsession and annoyance that the two characters show for each other. When Lady Bird and her mom take a road trip to look at colleges, they share a tear at the ending of the book they are listening to. Just moments later, Lady Bird needs to be away from her mother so desperately that she literally throws herself out of the vehicle. (Later, she writes an expletive directed toward her mother on her cast.) Not that we are anywhere close to this extreme, as much as I love my own mother, to this day nobody can work my nerves the way she does, and I expect she feels the same love and frustration for me. 13

You could also call this movie a coming-of-age story, because “Call me Lady Bird,” definitely grows up a lot during her final year in high school. Frustrated with what she thinks of as a lack of culture around her in Sacramento – the city may be the capital of California, but, especially back in the early 2000s when this movie takes place, it was pretty quiet and almost rural compared to the California you usually see on screen. Instead, the academically mediocre student longs to attend school in New York, or anyplace else that will get her far away from her humble home and family. Like a lot of teens, she also aspires to join the ranks of the “cool” kids at her Catholic high school, none of whom noticed her before she pretended to live in a big house in a nice neighborhood. And yet, throughout the film, it’s her family that really supports the teen. Her brother Miguel (Jordan Rodrigues) tries to model the value of hard work. Her dad (Tracy Letts) helps her apply for the dream schools she’s barely qualified to apply to. And, when it all goes wrong with the “cool” boyfriend, it’s her mom who picks Lady Bird up and knows exactly what to do to lift her daughter’s spirits. Stream Lady Bird on Amazon and other services. Vol. 30, 44 / Feb 14 - Feb 20, 2019

Erickson Beats Hurdle Record Again For the third time during the 2019 Jr. Collegiate Indoor track and field season, Deya Erickson has broken the Cloud County Community College 60m Hurdles school record and in the process, her own BVI indoor mark. Erickson represented the Kansas school in the Northwest Bearcats Invite in Missouri over the weekend, and went to winners’ row with a time of 8.48 seconds over the 60m barriers, improving the 8.51 she dropped two weeks ago. Prior to that, Arianna Forbes’ mark of 8.68 had stood since 2010. Erickson is also ranked No. 2 on the Jr. College’s indoor list. Her records are impressive, but considering that she injured her knee on the eve of the April 2016 Carifta Games in Grenada, and then missed the rest of that season as well as the entire 2017 campaign, her performance is really remarkable. Her recovery began with gingerly jogging in October 2017 after the passage of Hurricane Irma. At one time before her surgery, she was told that she might never be able to run again because of the severity of the injury, something she certainly didn’t want to hear. Returning to action in 2018, Erickson, competing for Turabo University in Puerto Rico at the time, won the Liga Atletica Interuniversitaria 100m Hurdles, thus becoming the territory’s first athlete to win a championship in the Puerto Rico university system. She later lowered her outdoor 100m Hurdles best to 13.80 seconds. Reflecting on the differences in preparation over the past years, a determined Erickson said her body

basically went through a whole different training regiment, with a different type of endurance work and a different weight room program. “My body has a different level of strength than my body has been used to,” Erickson pointed out after her weekend performance. “The difference between competing in Puerto Rico and now is, I have way more competitions. I get tired yes, but these competitions are more like training as well. Having a lot of different races, lots of reps, you’re able to go back and correct yourself. You have more chances to make corrections over just competing maybe once or twice per month as I did in Puerto Rico.” Erickson, who has been coached by Derwin Scatliffe since her comeback, said she has been focusing on her strength and endurance. These will remain her focus areas for the rest of the season she said, as she continues to improve. “That’s what I lacked in the latter part of my race,” she noted. “My endurance and the strength to hold my endurance.” Erickson was the 2018 Comeback Athlete of the Year. She’s eagerly looking forward to the outdoor season, with its frequency of collegiate competition. Her performance has also qualified her for the National Jr. College Athletics Association Indoor Championships, where she will compete along with Barton County College’s Adriano Gumbs, who will contest the 600m.
