Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival You might have noticed that things at Nanny Cay have been a little busier than usual this week. That’s because the Sailing Festival portion of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival kicked off on Monday. It’s not too late to join the fun, however, as the Spring Regatta registration continues today (Thursday) with fun events for sailors and land-lubbers alike throughout the weekend. Carib gets the Regatta Village started this evening with a Welcome Party and t-shirt specials from 5pm, plus music by MJ Blues. On Friday, racing gets underway at 10am, with Mount Gay Race Day. Action continues in the village in the afternoon with Mount Gay, who are presenting the day’s racing awards at 5:30pm and will supply a free drink to those sporting their red Mount Gay hats for the first hour after awards are given. Dance the night away with the BVI’s own Final Faze from 7pm-midnight. On Saturday, racing begins at 10am, with fun in the village from 5pm for the Absolut MIDSAILING crew party and White dress. Don’t forget to check out the stage around 5:30pm, when there will be

a fashion show by Xanadu. MJ Blues will provide the music from 7pm until late. Sunday sees things wrap up with the final day of racing. At the village, mocko jumbies will entertain from 4pm until it’s time for the official Spring Regatta 2019 prize giving. The finale dance party with DJ Juice, if you have any energy left, is from 7:30 until midnight. Whenever you stop by the village, show your support for the BVI’s precious natural environment by stopping in at their Eco-lounge. While you’re there, learn about the regatta’s 10-year tradition as a certified Green event; from continuing to push re-usable water bottles to their new efforts at recycling those pesky one-time-use water bottles and even displaying furniture that is made from recycled plastics, the lounge will be a one-stop shop for environmentally minded sailors. There isn’t enough space in this entire magazine to cover the myriad rules of island driving, but let’s continue from where we left off last week, this time focusing on the rules picking up folks who are catching rides. I’m sure different drivers have their own rules, but these are mine. As always, safety comes first! If I’m driving alone at night or with my little one, I probably won’t stop for you unless you’re someone I know. Our island home is a safe place, but I don’t want to tempt anybody who might have lessthan-innocent intentions. Other cars have to be a consideration when stopping along the road too. I have a fear of being rear-ended by an inattentive motorist, so there are certain spots along the road that I won’t stop, such as the portions of the “highway” where drivers insist on speeding into blind curves. As a driver, I always want to make my intentions clear, so I make it a rule for myself to talk to a person before I pick them up to let them know approximately how far I’m heading. Interestingly, some folks would still enter the vehicle and request to be dropped off somewhere else entirely. I guess it Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

6

doesn’t hurt to ask, but I don’t get it. Another rule, but as I recently learned I am not the only one who has this issue, has to do with the use of artificial scents. I happen to have a sensitive sniffer, so if I can smell your chosen perfume from inside my vehicle, I’m so sorry but you’re going to have to wait for the next driver. I’ve been burned by this one a few too many times -- sometimes literally as these scents can make my nostrils feel as though they’re on fire -other times figuratively as I’ve spent the ride breathing through nausea as though I’m in labor. I also tend not to stop for groups of people. This is because my son in his car seat isn’t visible to someone standing on the side of the road, which has led many hopeful riders to assume I have more space available than I actually do. No shade to those with sturdier suspensions than the one on my small vehicle, but I’m also not the one to cram more riders into my vehicle than it was designed for. I’m sure there are many more rules for drivers who would offer rides to hitchers -- What are yours? Let us know on the Limin Times Facebook page.

I Make More Money Dear Koren, If a man makes less money than I and he is a nice person in other areas, do you think I would end up feeling resentful that I am bearing the financial burden in the relationship? I want to try things out with this guy, but my 2 girlfriends are telling me I deserve a guy who can give me a better lifestyle and that I am settling. – DS Dear DS, It depends on how important money is to you and what kind of person this guy is. A man can be making 10 times more than you do and not be financially responsible or turn out to be very stingy. Then you can have one who makes less money than you, but he is still generous as much as he is able to be and he seeks to make your needs a priority. Sometimes it’s not only about the quantity of the money, but the quality of the guy’s heart and his mindset.

Your girlfriends can be well meaning with their advice, but you have to know what you want because money is not the only indicator of a good lifestyle. Just because he makes less money, does that mean that you have to bear the financial burden if you both share expenses. I think you should get to know this guy and see if you like him and how the relationship develops; don’t write him off just because of what he makes. The conversation about finances, while important, might be a bit premature. We live in times when there are so many things to consider about a potential partner and we cannot be narrow minded in our focus and decision making. I would not want you to lose out on happiness, simply because of a perception. Money is important, but happiness is tied into so much more.

She Devil

An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary

Chapter 11: A Special Weekend Today I meet Da Don’s special client. I was kind of nervous because normally when we get booked for private gigs it’s a party or some rich guy who wants all the girls to himself. But a solo weekend? Never. I was just on the phone with David and he reminded me that the minute I don’t feel comfortable I need to leave. “Some of those old guys are worse than the young ones so be alert,” David warned me. He also said if I run into any trouble I should call him, and he will send someone to come rescue me. “Wow,” I said out loud when I arrived at the client’s home. To call it big would not do the place justice. It was grand. As I was about to ring the door bell, the door opened. It was a man in a suit, an actual fancy butler. He must’ve heard me, I thought, shaking my head. “Come in Miss, we’ve been expecting your arrival,” said the gentleman. “My name is Henry, I’m the butler. Follow me and I’ll show you to your room. Mr. Stiller is on business call.” “Thank you,” I responded. I followed him up some stairs to a big white door then he opened it for me and spoke, “You will be staying in here. Mr. Stiller’s quarters are that way, and you are welcome -- but not required -- to joining him there. Mr. Stiller wishes you to be comfortable.” “Call me Angel,” I said “Pardon me?” Henry replied. “You can call me by my name, which is Angel and not Miss,” I answered. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

“Oh! No worries Ms. Angel” he replied, “I’ll leave you to get settled.” When Henry left, I gave the enormous room a once-over. I can get used to a room like this, I thought to myself. Not a bad way to live. While putting my stuff up, I heard a knock on the door. Figuring it was Henry, I just called “come in,” over my shoulder. “Hi Angel,” the man said. “I am Bobby Stiller but you can call me Bobby. I’m the one that requested your company for the next few days. I hope you are okay with that, and that no one forced you to come.” “Hi Bobby, nice to meet you,” I said. Since he was clearly trying to reassure me, I figured it was a good time to find out what I was in for. Keeping my tone light, I said, “I’m looking forward to the weekend. Da Don filled me in on some things but I’d love to hear from you what exactly you have planned for us.” “Well, now that you come to the point, yes,” Bobby replied. “I hope Da Don told you to pack something formal to wear. You will be accompanying me to dinner. We’ll leave here at 7pm,” he said. ******* “Wow you look beautiful Miss, I mean Angel,” Henry said when I came downstairs. At that moment Bobby came out the office and joined me at the door. “You look beautiful. Shall we?” Bobby said, gesturing for us to leave. 12

Taraji P Henson is one of those acting talents that can be heart-attack serious one minute, then heels-in-the-air silly the next, and she single-handedly makes What Men Want worth watching. In this remake of the 2000 What Men Want, the plot has not only reversed the genders, but also introduced the element of race as well. Main character Alison, better known to her friends as Ali (Henson) is the only woman agent and one of only a handful of people of color at the highprofile sports management company where she works. As the movie opens, we see that Ali is a go-getter, giving her all for clients like Lisa Leslie. She’s been a boss agent for enough time that her colleagues respect her, her clients love her and her assistant (Josh Brener) fears her. So, at the next big board meeting she’s sure to make partner, right? Wrong! Ali gets passed over for yet another white dude. Later, she tries to cheer up to be there for the bachelorette party of her bestie that evening. I would have loved to see way more of all the friends in this movie, but they each (Wendi McLendon-Covey, Tamala Jones and Phoebe Robinson) shine in their short moments on screen. 13

Things take a real turn when a psychic named Sister (Erykah Badu) reads the cards for Ali and pronounces that the career gal, who, with her brash attitude and love of sports has always felt like a “guy’s girl,” needs help to connect with men. Sister’s solution: tea. This peyote infused concoction causes Ali to wake up with the ability to hear men’s thoughts. Ali’s life immediately becomes immensely more complicated. Hearing men’s innermost thoughts is distracting (and at times disgusting) but, being the clever career woman that she is, she soon turns it to her advantage. She listens to the thoughts of her fellow agents while playing poker, to her potential clients as they negotiate deals, and even to her father as he tries his best to help her. Before long Ali is using her power to rope her latest fling into pretending to be in a serious relationship to land her firm a high-profile draft pick as a client. Will all their subterfuge pay off and get the young player to sign? What’s more, how long can Ali keep up appearances when her potential client’s father (Tracy Morgan) keeps interfering? What Men Want is playing at UP’s Cineplex.

Frederick Guides Inter Primary Division Champions Ericca Frederick, a former athlete who has been coaching since she returned from college in Jamaica in 2008, and was inspired watching Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell and the other Olympic athletes, coach athletes on Fast Lane Jr. Track Club, the development wing of the late Dag Samuels’ main club. During March 13th-14th Inter Primary School Track and Field Championships, five of her athletes were crowned Division Champions in both A and B Divisions, including one Victor and Victrix Ludorum, marking the most champions she has ever coached in the school meet. “Most of these children are very determined,” she noted. “They push themselves in training, they give 100 percent and even when they’re tired, they still push themselves all the way, especially Chelsey Edwards. She never one day complained that she’s tired.” Fredericks said the others use the St. Georges Primary School student who won the A Division Victrix Ludorum as the Rabbit when they’re training. “They really push a lot behind of her,” Federick noted. Frederick said she wasn’t really surprised to have coached five division champions especially in the U9 Boys Division which was claimed by Jakhoy Barnes of Joyce Samuel. “Looking around with the other coaches, not many of them had U9 Boys,” she said. “He started training about two months ago.” Bryson Walters of Althea Scatliffe also won the U9 Boys A Division title. Division Victor Ludorum and competed in the U11 Boys class she described as a ‘go getter.’ “He came out very good this year, last year he had his cousin Tiondre Frett (Althea Scatliffe), they’re still in the same age group this year, but they’re in two different divisions. He always tries to get where is cousin is.” Cedar School’s Sam Potgieter who won the U13 Boys title, Frederick said was the surprise. “He’s actually like a distance runner, but even when you give him sprints in training, anything you give him to do, he gives you 100 percent,” she pointed out. “If you give him jumps, he goes all out in jumping, he’s just a person who likes challenges.” Frederick, a Phys Ed Teacher, says coaching at the youth level is important because it’s the foundation and once she gets them out training, she knows she’s working on developing them and it will help how far they get in the future. She’s always proud when they excel. “I always look back at my first athlete who’s doing very well in the United States, Adaejah Hodge, coaching Chelsea reminds me of her,” she said. “They always push themselves 100 percent, they’re focused; they don’t really talk much in training or play around. They take what they’re doing seriously.” Besides her love for track and field, Frederick also plays softball and volleyball. 14
