Destiny Although she may seem shy on first introduction, she will eventually warm up to you and you will see that she is full of life and energy. Melz, Destiny’s mom, says, “she is funny sometimes and a bit talkative. She also likes to ask questions.” She continues to say that she admires her daughter’s thirst for knowledge and that she’s an incredibly fast learner. Destiny is very active. She loves swimming and ballet, and eventually wants to start gymnastics. Her favorite thing to do is make slime, thanks to YouTube. She is also a bit of a tomboy who tends to get rough and dirty but when it’s time to dress up she is 100 percent girly. Being a lover of everything that sparkles, dress up days at school mean casual clothes accessorized with fairy wings. Her mom recalls the time when Destiny decided to wear a crown just because, only to be peppered with questions about whether it was her birthday. As far as I’m concerned, Destiny has it right: any day is a good day to put on a crown and feel like a princess. Shortly after Hurricane Irma, Destiny approached Mom about starting an accessories business. Instead of questioning why, Melz’s response was “okay, lets do this.” Business sense seems to run in the family. Recently, Destiny visited Jamaica for the first Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

since her birth and was able to visit her grandmother’s restaurant. Melz reports she really enjoyed working (and bossing around the restaurant). Imagine her little self saying, “Martin, you have to fold the napkin like this!” “Grandpa, I want to make the change and count the money.” Her parents have instilled in her that she can achieve anything, so long as she is willing to put in the work. Juju’s Accessories VI is an online children accessories store catering to ages 0–16 years at very affordable prices. Their items range from hair accessories and jewelry to purses and backpacks. They also offer a seasonal subscription JujuBox which will feature 4–5 themed accessories. The first box launches in December. Items are a mix of international orders and local products. Customers also have the option of ordering directly from the site and have their goodies delivered to their personal mailing address. The difference between Destiny’s business and some others is that it’s run by a kid. Destiny personally goes through the items on her vendors’ site and picks what she thinks kids like her would love to have. Destiny’s personality shines through in many of the accessories on offer in the shop. To support Destiny, please visit her business site www.jujusaccessoriesvi.com. Some people lament being sick in the summer, or the extra awfulness that is #manflu, but for my money, there is no illness quite like the one you get while living in paradise. For one thing, you don’t just fear that you’re missing out when it’s a gorgeous day outside and the beach down the road is warm and sunny. This is the pain of knowing for absolute certain that you are definitely missing out. This Saturday while my friends went to the beach or pool or hopped over to Virgin Gorda for the most recent Food Fete event, I was in my bed chugging water and paracetamol. It was miserable! We also have to contend with the special bother that is island pharmacies. Man was I spoiled by the giant chain pharmacies and big-box stores back in southern California. With such a small population to serve, perishable items that don’t get purchased frequently just aren’t a wise investment for businesses that serve island communities. I get why they don’t keep too many different medications on hand: why buy in bulk when chances are that you’ll have to throw away a lot of your stock when it expires? As a sick conLimin’Times Entertainment Guide

sumer, however, the last thing I want to do is visit four or five pharmacies only to settle on whatever over-thecounter treatment comes closest to treating my particular symptoms. What I do love is the resourcefulness of island home remedies. I have a friend who swears by rum to treat sore throat. I can’t remember the exact reasoning behind this particular folk cure – it may have had something to do with the time this friend spent slinging drinks at BVI bars! I do recall that after I got over the initial burning sensation of that shot of rum going down, my throat actually did feel better. I’ve also had excellent success with eucalyptus leaf tea as a treatment for cough and congestion. It’s vastly more pleasant and convenient to step outside, pull some leaves off a tree, and then wash and boil them for tea compared to swallowing pills. They make the house smell great, too. Plus, like I said, it works really well for me, and when you’re sick, all you want is to feel better. I want to know what everybody else uses to treat illness at home. If you have a cure to share, head over the Limin Times Facebook page and let me know.

Light, Camera, Action; Part 2 Chapter 18: Haunting Departure

Jazz I have nothing to hide, so I agreed to take the stand. They began with the basics: stuff about my relationship with my Dad, with Shelly, and how much I knew about Dad and Shelly’s relationship. When they got asking me about my mom, I froze. Mom’s death still haunts me. “Hi Princess,” I remember my mom greeting me when I walked in the house after school that day. My mom was a fashion model, so I guess that’s where my love for fashion design came from. Growing up I loved to play dress up in her clothes and play in her cosmetics. She never minded, and even taught me how to put on basic makeup from a young age. From the first time I presented her with my own design, she encouraged me and even gave me pointers here and there. “Hey mom,” I greeted her back heading straight to the fridge. I was a senior in high school and I had hopes of going to a top design program after graduation. The kitchen smelled like heaven as always, so I never noticed that my Mom seemed a little different. Dad was out of town so it was just me and mom having dinner. After we ate, I told her to rest while I cleaned up. When I finished, I met mom on her bathroom floor not breathing. 11

It wasn’t until we reached the hospital that I called Dad and told him to come straight home because Mom needed him. As for me, I needed my best friend. As soon as I explained what happened, she rushed straight to the hospital to be by my side. A year later, it seemed like my mom’s suffering had been constant. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We were warned surgery would be risky, but Dad and I so wanted to save her that we choose to go ahead with it. She turned into a vegetable. After that, Dad, who had always travelled a lot, was out of town even more. Even though I was 18, I was surprised when the doctors approached me to make a decision instead of my dad. Truth is, Mom knew about her condition and hid it from us. She wanted to go in peace and with the least burden on us. Instructions from her lawyer told me that she didn’t want to live on life support. She said if the worst should happen, I needed to act like the grown up (guess she knew Dad wouldn’t be able to handle it) and pull the plug. Knowing all that, I felt disappointed in myself after I read the letter. I had encouraged Dad to give permission for the surgery, which I only too late realized she would not have wanted. I held on to that letter for months and never told Dad because I was still holding on to hope that she would wake up. When the doctors asked me what my decision was, I told them to pull the plug. If you’re a fan of Tyler Perry’s work, better yet, if you’re a fan of Power’s Omari Hardwick or the legendary Whoopi Goldberg, then Nobody’s Fool is the perfect film for you to see. Oh! Did I forget to mention that rising comedy star Tiffany Haddish is also in the film? My bad. The film opens with Danica (Tika Sumpter) talking to her love, who, despite the fact that they’ve been dating for a whole year, she’s never seen in person. Danica and her friend Kalli (Amber Riley) were on the same marketing team and were presenting a killer proposal for a client. Later in the day Danica received a call from her mother asking her to pick up her sister Tanya (Tiffany Haddish) who recently spent five years in jail. Mom’s instructions: drop Tanya anywhere but at her mother’s house. At this point in the movie I was like darn, your own mom is trying to keep far from you? You gotta be real bad. Danica and Kalli go to collect Tanya and meet her in a compromising positing they both wished they could un-see. It’s the final straw, Tanya is going to stay with her big sister. Danica is 13

sure she can help her get her life back on tract. At the house, while Danica takes a call from her mysterious boyfriend, Kalli informs Tanya that she needs to look out for her sister. The feisty ex-con becomes suspicious when her sister shares that she’s never seen her boyfriend IRL. No stranger to online cons, it only takes a little research for Tanya to realize that her sister’s mystery man isn’t real. She reaches out for some help and realizes that prim and proper princess Danica doesn’t have her life as together as she would like everyone to think. Tanya gets a job at a coffee joint and also attends the meetings required of her. Unlike the other employees, she treats the boss as if they are friends and she sets the rules. In this case, that’s not a bad thing. It builds a bond between them. Tanya soon realizes that her boss was also in love with her sister. She tries to hook them up, but Danica isn’t interested. Along the way, however, something changes and a new union brings out some unwanted emotions. Nobody’s Fool is currently showing at UP’s Cineplex. Vol. 30, 33 / Nov 22 - Nov 28, 2018

Pickering Helping Eagles Soar Sharonda Pickering is ending her collegiate volleyball career the same way she started it—with a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Pickering helped the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles to their first ASUN Conference Tournament crown and the prized trip that comes with it to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. That came after helping the Eagles to their first conference title since 2012, with her mother Sayretta, father Amos and sister Sharona looking on, in her last home game on Sr. night. Sunday’s victory over rivals Kennesaw State, was the Eagles’ 15th straight victory, tying their 2012 and 2016 best team marks. “The past three years, we have been close but never able to snatch the regular season title,” Pickering said after winning conference. “Last year, we finished second which was still a great position heading into the conference tournament. This year, having a lot more playing time, being able to be a part of this is something great and going all the way, it’s exciting.” She said having her family in the stands on senior night was a very special treat. “Senior night was really special knowing that it was the last time you’ll play on your home court,

Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

with your home crowd,” she said. “It was extremely special for me because I was able to celebrate with my parents and sister who saw me play at this level for the first time.” Pickering and her team spent the summer touring Europe and playing different teams as a way of bonding and preparing for the season. They lost their senior Libero/defensive specialist, but had a freshman coming in and dominating the position. “Going to Europe, we had basically the same roster so working day in and day out with the same group of girls, made our team even better,” Pickering noted. “So Dana (Anxer) our new Libero, is really stepping up as a freshman and making a great impact on the floor.” Pickering, who attended Jr. College at Hillsborough Community College and earned a NCAA Jr. College Championships bronze medal in her freshman year, said her senior season has definitely been her best season in college. “Starting off at Hillsborough as a freshman, there was a lot of adjusting to do, especially the pace of the game,” the Elmore Stoutt High School graduate pointed out. “From then until now, I have developed and grown a lot more as a player and continue to be able to help my team as best I can.”
