World Down Syndrome Day Down Syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, affects about one in every 700 babies born. It’s a genetic disorder that’s typically associated with physical growth delays, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and characteristic facial features. The condition is caused by a problem with chromosome 21, wherein there are three copies of that gene instead of two. Doctors aren’t sure why this happens, and there aren’t any links to the environment or anything the parents did or didn’t do. Although Down Syndrome cannot be cured, early treatment can help the persons with it to have productive lives well into adulthood. Children with Down Syndrome can often benefit from speech therapy, occupational therapy, and exercises to help im-

prove their motor skills. Locally, such persons receive support from the Social Development Department as well as at the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre. Today (Thursday) is celebrated as Down Syndrome Awareness Day. To show support for persons living with the condition, the public is encouraged to wear brightly colored long or printed socks, or even three socks for three chromosomes. You can share the love by posting pictures of your artful socks to social media with the hashtag #lotsofsocksbvi. You can also show support to persons in the BVI community with Down Syndrome by purchasing one of their branded t-shirts by calling call the BVI Autism Centre at 4683672.

When you work in publishing, social media is ordinarily just part of the job, but occasionally, a discussion online will catch my eye. Recently I was inspired by a thread on the BVI Community Board all about catching rides. While the process is totally informal, the thread reminded me that we all have different rules for how we conduct ourselves in the process of getting from point A to point B. For context, although I am not currently much of a hitcher, it was my primary mode of commuting, getting to various assignments, and making my way to special occasions for about 5 or 6 years. Top of my personal list of hitching rules is to leave the vehicle exactly as I meet it. This means that no matter how much I may be sweating, I won’t touch a window lever, unless the driver tells me I should. Regardless of how awkward the angle of a seat may seem to me, I don’t make any adjustments. And I’d never dream of requesting a change to the driver’s musical choices. Some might say that as a hitcher, I have been invited into a person’s vehicle and it’s okay to make myself comfortable. Why such strict rules? Because I know a little bit about “island jeep” problems. I might crank down the window only to learn that once down, it never rolls back Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

up again. If there’s a hole in the floorboard of the jeep, my seat adjustment might cause me to fall right through the bottom and onto the road. Also high on the list is that I don’t want to be dropped at my door. What it is about about woman hitching alone that gives a man the idea that she is in the market for a boyfriend? Anyway, it did not take me long to put up all the guards against this, including guarding my privacy. Have you ever been surprised at your door by someone whose only connection to you is that they once dropped you off at home? I don’t recommend it. Another important rule is to be swift whenever entering and exiting a vehicle. Of course you don’t want to rush or be unsafe, but it’s important to remember that you are most likely blocking traffic so it’s good to make every second count. Last but not least is to hail. I know that not everyone is able to pick up hitchers, but personally, I want everyone who is able to do it to know that I am not waiting for my boo or a taxi to come for me, so out goes the hand. Next week I’ll share my rules as a driver, but in the meantime, let us know your rules of the road on the Limin Times Facebook page.

She Devil
An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary
Chapter 10: Two Plans Britney locked the front door as soon as she got home and headed straight to her office to check her security camera footage. She was scared of her own shadow ever since the break-in at Troy’s. At the club, she tried to put up a tough front, but a month later, she wasn’t over it. Meanwhile, security there had already eased off a bit. Angel had said she was sorry to hear about what happened, although Britney couldn’t tell if she was sincere or just gloating. The pair would never be friends, but Britney appreciated that Angel didn’t bask in the news of the break-in. She also appreciated that Troy finally seemed to be over Angel, which made her much easier to like in Britney’s opinion. As she fast-forwarded through the camera’s footage from the previous night, Britney turned her thoughts to how she could get Troy to get rid of his ex-wife. Britney knew the pair weren’t really together, and thought of each other as nothing more than co-parents to their shared child, but having her in the picture at all annoyed Britney. I want no competition, she thought to herself. **************** I just got out my class on a high like never before. Remember that paper I told y’all I was writing? Well it was the best paper from my class and they even want me to present it at a convention in two weeks. I wrote about a female fighting a tough life to better herself – it was practically my life story. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
I called David to share the news as soon as I could, and after hearing my man’s praises, I called Da Don to ask him for a short meeting. He told me to come straight to his office when I got to the club that evening. “Wassup shorty? Take a seat and rap to me,” he said when I came in. I told him all about my paper, and how the college wanted me to represent them, and asked if I could take a few vacation days. “Wow! That’s dope, I’m happy for you,” Da Don said. “Actually I wanted to see you tonight too, remember that job I told you about, it’s a week from now.” He continued, “How about, doing the job and then take a real vacation after? You deserve it.” Da Don proceeded to tell me the details about the job. Apparently this was very rich man and he requested the presence of one girl to keep him company for the weekend while he is in town. The man was open to sex, but it wasn’t required, he just wanted company. He was also up there in age. I made a mental note to call David and fill him in about my special job and all about the special vacation afterward. I excused myself out of Da Don’s office and headed to the backroom to get ready. It was only Tuesday but the club was looking pretty full. It was going to be a long night.

Instant Family is a sweet dramedy with plenty to teach about how adoption can impact parents and kids alike. When we meet Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne), they are happily married and, although they love kids, they don’t have any of their own. Instead, their lives are devoted to their business buying houses to renovate and sell. Some teasing from their family reveals that they always imagined they’d be parents, but fear being “old” parents. A half-joking idea that they adopt an older child turns into a class on becoming adoptive parents through the foster care system. Course facilitators Sharon (Tig Notaro) and Karen (Octavia Spencer) bring the perfect mix of emotion and humor as they disabuse the roomful of hopeful adopters of their ideas about being the next Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side or “rescuing” children the way you’d rescue a puppy from the animal shelter. (Props to the filmmakers for naming and shaming the “white savior” trope that is so common in adoption tales!) 13
Class finished, but undecided whether they can handle a foster child, Ellie and Pete decide to attend an awkward meet and greet for prospective parents and foster kids. There, the couple has a tense encounter with 15-year-old Lizzie (Isabela Moner). Later, they conclude that Lizzie confronting them proves she’s a great kid with a good head on her shoulders. They arrange a home visit. It turns out that Lizzie is the oldest of three kids. Her younger siblings Juan (Gustavo Quiroz) and Lita (Julianna Gamiz) are adorable, if quirky. Ellie and Pete decide to bring the kids home. At first, everything goes swimmingly, but Ellie and Pete soon learn that it was just a “honeymoon phase:” Lizzie reveals her worst teenage attitude and the quirks of the younger kids morph into daily trials and tantrums. Just as the dust is settling, Lizzie, Juan and Lita’s birth mother gets released from jail. She initiates visits and begins the legal process to get her kids back. Will Pete and Ellie have to let go of the kids they’ve grown to love? Instant Family is available for streaming on Amazon and other services. A note to parents: although there are kids in this one, it’s definitely not appropriate for kids under 13. Vol. 30, 49 / Mar 21 - Mar 27, 2019
SCBBC Launches Showtime In Paradise The future of basketball in the greater Virgin Islands was on full display over the weekend at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, when the Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club launched its 9-12 and 13-15 Showtime in Paradise Basketball Tournament, featuring teams from St. Thomas and Tortola, as part of the club’s 25th Anniversary activities. Milton McLean founded the club on April 1, 1994 and the tournament came ahead of an April 4-11 trip to Orlando, to participate in the CNBA South King Basketball Classic. The weekend tournament though, belonged to St. Thomas’ Nuff Respect, who was head and shoulders above everyone else and it was a great learning opportunity for the BVI teams, that McLean has been developing. Led by Vincent Frett Jr.’s 17 points and six rebounds, Nuff Respect began play with a 36-15 victory over St. Thomas counterpart Zero Tolerance on Friday night, while BVI Strong overpowered Tola Ballers, 3111. On Saturday, Zero Tolerance turned back Tola Ballers, 26-6, while Nuff Respect rolled past turnover prone BVI Strong, 28-4. “I think the tournament had great promise behind it and I can tell the organizers wanted the best for these youths and to see them do good and their love for the game of basketball,” Nuff Respect’s coach Kishawn Calendar said. “I was happy that we were invited over and we were able to showcase our talent against some of the best BVI players.” Calendar said he saw lots of potential in the BVI players and encouraged them to practice, practice, practice.
“That’s what our team does—practice yearround, at least twice a week, sometimes up to four,” he noted. “With practice you learn more about basketball and more about life. It makes you a better person and first and foremost, a better basketball player.” McLean said he thought the tournament was very exciting and would have liked to see more fans coming out and supporting the BVI teams. “We didn’t have a home field advantage,” he noted. “We played in the BVI, but we didn’t have that support and I think that would have been awesome. The parents, referees and scorers came out and did a very good job and I’m very happy about it.” McLean said when he looked at the talent levels, he recognized that in order to improve the talent level in the BVI, they must train and practice and they must be on top of their game. He said the players who represented the BVI were thrown together and they didn’t have solid practices. “We need to improve in that area and we need the public, parents and everybody, to really support these kids going forward,” he said. “That will help them improve in many different ways.” Among awards doled out, Nuff Respect’s Vern Frett Jr. scored the most points, had the most rebounds and was named tournament MVP. Zero Tolerance’s Kareem Pinnoy and the BVI’ Strong’s D’jahniah Pemberton, were the tournament’s Most Exciting Players.
