Dancing Under The Stars It’s that time again to put on your elegant outfits and dancing shoes for the 2020, Dancing Under the Stars on January 31st from 7pm at the Government House. This fund raising event is to benefit the Family Support Network. Hosted by Governor Augustus Jaspert and Mrs. Jaspert in conjunction with the Tortola Ladies Club entertainment will be provided by DJ Push Pop and guests will be given a welcome glass of Santa Margherita Prosecco upon arrival. When the event first began, some of the funds raised came from auctions held to dance with BVI stars. As organizers realized that format made it harder for everyone to get their share of time on the dance floor, the event changed to Dancing Under the Stars.
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.
Previous years have seen guest dance instructors, special performances by local dance schools, and lots of showing off – You truly never know which of your neighbors and friends can bust a move until you attend this event. Some of the great prizes for the silent auction are two days’ staycation at Scrub Island Resort, spa treatments and an afternoon of fun and games at Government House. There will also be some raffle prizes; a bottle of Santa Margherita Prosecco, a gift bag from Nutmeg Designs, EC Shop, jewelry from Taino, BVI Gin, A Taste of India, Gene’s Restaurant and much more. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at Cay Electronics, Island Roots, Family Support Network Office, House and Red Rock.

Birthday Celebration Edition So, leading up to the last two weeks, it’s been nothing but planning and executing. My little lady celebrated her 5th birthday this Monday and she was adamant about details and what she wanted. I’m like, “Who is this grown little woman?” Not only did she choose her theme, she also went through the hair style options, her dress colour (after she agreed to the look I was going for based on my Pinterest findings) and what she wanted on her cake! Sometimes it scares me on how girly she is because I, on the other hand, grew up a tomboy – playing outside, being into sports and shunning dresses. To this day, give me jeans and a t-shirt and I’m content. I can’t keep up with a little fashionista when the closest thing to looking feminine on me, is me being born a woman; although lately I’ve been trying to change that by getting my nails and hair done. Mini-me asked for a class party which was music to her parents’ ears – it meant less stress and seemed more affordable. Her theme was Minnie Mouse. Each year for her birthday, she always Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

gets a tutu outfit and we take some pictures at the park. This year, I kinda switched things up by changing that to a formal dress. According to the image I saw online, the whole formal look was toned down a bit by having sandals instead of ballet flats. Since it’s school time, we agreed on an appropriate hairstyle to last the school week and one for her age group. We ended up taking her pictures on Sunday afternoon after the rain let up. On her birthday, it was pizza party time for the class at lunch. After the kids ate, they sang happy birthday for her then she got to take even more pictures at her school’s famous photo wall. Since she got up very early, she dropped asleep shortly after getting home and didn’t get to cut her cake at home as she had hoped (her class got cupcakes). All-in-all her day was a success – she was happy and that what was most important. Until next time.... smile & enjoy your little ones. 6

In this film, a woman is indicted for murdering her husband. After she shares her story with her lawyer, the lawyer thinks there may be some conspiracy involved. Despite the harsh criticisms I saw online (fact is everyone can’t be pleased nor do we all have the same taste), I’ve watched the movie three times so far. I must admit that the last time I watched, was actually to see how I managed to miss certain parts. In the opening scene, we see Officer Jordan Bryant (Matthew Law) trying to convince an elderly lady not to commit suicide. As the movie continues, the next day, we see Jordan’s wife Jasmine (Bresha Webb) who works as a public defender become assigned to Grace’s (Crystal R. Fox) case. Jasmine’s boss Rory (Tyler Perry) has confidence that Jasmine would handle the case well, as it was an open and shut one - Grace wanted to plead guilty. However, that changes when she convinces Grace to go to trial. As Grace begins to tell Jasmine her story, viewers begin to learn more about her. It is revealed that Grace was once married and she hated life after her divorce. Her friend, Sarah (Phylicia Rashad) then convinces her to go out and meet someone new.
11
Sarah gives Grace a ticket for an art show and insists that she goes. It is there that she meets Shannon (Mehcad Brooks). Although Grace is skeptical at first about how he knows where she worked the next day when she meets a note from him, she still agrees to call him and eventually they meet up. Grace quickly falls in love with Shannon whom she felt was really in love with her as well. I mean, the man went to church with her and he wasn’t religious. After three months they get married. Just as quickly as the fireworks start, they are just as quickly put out. A turn of events at her job and new found information about her home rattles things for Grace. If that is not bad enough Shannon cheats on her in her own home and has no respect for her. The shocking truth about his confession causes Grace to flip and seek revenge against her will. Jasmine then visits Sarah again to hear her side of the event. This convinces her even more that Grace’s case needs to go to court. Does Jasmine manage to win Grace’s court case, what happened at Grace’s job and what did Shannon confess too? A Fall From Grace can be streamed on Netflix. It will be also showing this Saturday 9pm at movies on the Pier Park. Vol. 31, 40 / Jan 23 - Jan 29, 2020
Devious Minds Chapter 13 “Good afternoon dear, good to see you again Diamond, please have a seat,” Mr. Sniles offered. “Let’s have a look at the revised designs.” Diamond spent three hours in her meeting. Luie Sniles is known in the fashion industry as the eyes of fashion. He has mentored and discovered the best of the best. Luie also promotes or buys designs from designers that are trying to get their big break. After being about in the city all day, Diamond stopped by a restaurant to get some takeout for home. Seeing that it was already after 7pm, she never bothered calling her siblings to see if they were hungry, she just got some extra food. It meant she would have leftovers for the next day. It was now the middle of the week and Diamond received an email about a meeting on Friday morning at 9am. “Great,” she thought to herself, “What did that b!tch say about me again.” As she tapped her pen impatiently in the boardroom, her boss, Jessica and Mr. Blake, the owner of the company came walking in. “Good morning Diamond, I hope we haven’t been keeping you waiting too long,” Mr. Blake said while taking a seat. “Let’s get down to business,’’ he continued. “Did you have a meeting with Luie Sniles lately?” “How did he know?” Diamond thought to herself before saying out loud, “yes I did, on my own time, is there a problem with that?” “Oh no, I’m just not sure why you didn’t give us the first option to look at those designs, since you work here.”
Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
Diamond pondered what he said and contemplated if she would just give him a story and or tell the truth. She eventually answered him, “Actually, I was very sure of those designs and I gave them to Mrs. Harring there but she threw them back at me. Since I was sure they were going to do well, my siblings encouraged me to shop around elsewhere and I took their advice. Did Mr. Sniles told you he wanted them? Will that deal affect my job here? “Wait! Jessica did what?” Mr Blake asked. “Diamond can you excuse us for a minute.” He stated more than asked. After fifteen minutes in the hallway waiting Mr. Blake and Jessica came out, she kept walking away and he asked her back into the boardroom with him. “Finally!” Diamond thought. It was the end of the day and she was ready to go home. She was in one meeting all day and never thought it was going to be over. Her sisters and friends were meeting at a small restaurant for happy hour instead of the rooftop they usually take over. “Bow down b!tches, royalty has arrived,” blared the over-the-top Patrick walking up to meet the girls. She just shook her head. The group was now seated at the restaurant waiting on their grub while engaged in a conversation about nothing. “So Diamond, you seem a little happier than normal, what’s got into you, spill?” Theresa asked. “Well actually, I had a long week especially today but I got some news for you guys. You remember when I was out all-day last Saturday, well, that’s where it all started.” 12
Everything Is Figureoutable I saw this post the other day on a friend’s WhatsApp status and it filled me with such hope. The hope came after the laughter and the laughter came after hearing the voice of my English teacher in secondary school saying that’s not a real word. I like it and I believe it and so I wanted to share it with you. If you are like me, that means that sometimes you get confused and overwhelmed and have hard decisions to make and want to just throw in the towel. We are human, after all. The good news is, no matter what comes our way, every single thing we encounter can be figured out. If we can’t figure it out, then we should look for someone who can. Here are some tips to conquer the madness in our life when we are faced with these challenges: Figure out the why. If you understand why you are facing this obstacle, then it might help you to deal with it. A medical diagnosis could be because you didn’t watch your diet. You might have lost a friend, because you didn’t repay a debt. Always ensure that you check to make to see what your role was in what happened and that will add perspective. Look at the situation from a 360-degree angle – it’s always good to take a step back and examine the problem not only from your point of view, but from the point of view of everyone involved. Look at it from in front, from behind, from on top and from 13
below and get a clear picture before you try to fix something. You might even realize after careful consideration, that nothing needs to be done. Use experience – yours and others. Think of what has worked for you in the past and see if that helps. Sometimes we sit and stare at the problem and do not consider that it is past problems that have pushed us to this point and our experience is valuable. Call up others and ask them what has worked for them in similar situations. Ask for help - If it is determined that the problem really needs to be fixed, then seek the expertise of someone who can do it for you if you can’t do it for yourself. The world is full of all kinds of people with carious skills and talents…some free and some come with a price. Acknowledge the benefits of your problem. Maybe the thing you lost wasn’t worth having anyway. Maybe that car part that is costing you $1,000 to repair happened just in time to save you from an accident that would have caused you to lose a limb. Maybe the betrayal was to show you who your real friends are. What is the advantage of this issue and how does it solve another problem. It’s figureoutable. So, continue on your merry or broken path with a hop, skip and a jump or even with a crawl and a limp because the point is, you are still getting somewhere because you have figured out how to do so. Vol. 31, 40 / Jan 23 - Jan 29, 2020
Space Kraft’s InterCaribbean Painkiller Cup 3-peat St. Croix’s Space Kraft team, 3-peated in Saturday’s 7th annual InterCaribbean Pain Killer Cup, a 14-miles paddle board race was from Trellis Bay on Beef Island, to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. The team of Bill Kraft, Isabel Pacard and Jeremey Vaine went from Trellis Bay northwest to Guana Island to shield from the high wind and waves, then went southwest to Jost Van Dyke in challenging conditions compared to last year when they went directly downwind after leaving Beef Island and into the open water. “The direction of the wind was still challenging,” Kraft said. “Being out of the north, we really had to fight the winds to get to White Bay for 14 miles, so it was a good battle all the way to the end.” Kraft whose team collected the $2,500 top prize, said because of the northeastern winds, they went to Guana Island so that they could make it to Sandy Split—south east of Jost Van Dyke—to come around the corner into White Bay. “You had to do that or you would have gone into Josiah’s Bay or somewhere else, because of the northeast wind,” said Kraft, whose team has finished no less than second four times. “The north wind made it much tougher than last year. But we train together all the time. We train hard in rough water.” Picard said the north wind wasn’t pushing them in the direction they were going. “We had to fight big waves that were coming from our side instead of from behind,” she noted. “We’ve done it so many times, but this was the hard-
est one.” Vaine said while there was some fun to be had, the conditions were super challenging. “The ocean was in charge today,” Vaine said. “There were some big north winds, some sneaky north swells, we had a little bit of everything going on out there, but the team that we have and the fun makes it all worthwhile.” St. Thomas’ Crossfit, comprised of Gilly Ann Smith Tristan Herman and Christopher Alsop, were second and won $1250, while Josh Morrell, Libby Alexander and Tom Blackwell of New York, earned $800 for third place. St. Thomas Jake Owens, Deirdre Roy and Eric Hartfield were third. Hartfield described his event debut as an adventure. “Depending on who was doing what leg, everything was different,” he pointed out. “You had some smooth water, some chop, downwind—everything was different and we had to tailor our approach—depending on what was thrown at us.” Brian Duff led a BVI residents sweep of the three miles race from Sandy Cay to White Bay. He was followed by Lee Donovan and Saski Lans. Johnathan Eden of Cleveland, Ohio, was fourth. “It was very difficult for the racers, but a real test of battling and athletic ability,” Event organizer Andy Morrell said. “It was really good. Probably the most exciting race we ever ran.”
