This Week’s Feature Story By Jane Bakewell

Happy Blues @ Myett’s The Caribbean seems to have a Siren’s pull on country rock musicians. Southern-boy legends like Jimmy Buffet and Kenny Chesney have strong ties to the islands, and have left their musical imprint here. One more county singer is making his debut here this week, “Happy Blues” guitarist and songwriter, Don Clayton will be performing at Myett’s on Friday, July 15th. Clayton brings his unique style of R&B that combines emotional songs with an uplifting twist. His music has themes about family, love, life and humor. “There are many stories to be told,” says Don, “and if done right, songwriting can touch and exhilarate people. No matter how sad a story may be, I still like to wind up my songs with a message of hope and light,” he expressed. Clayton started out in Alabama as a child experimenting with harmonica, then moved on in his teens to guitar and piano. He was influenced by many musical trends of the 60s and 70s from rock to Motown and country ballads. He began his first performing gigs in bars playing with blues and southern rock bands. In 1979 Don

moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where the influence of the Smokey Mountains and bluegrass music influenced his sound. Don’s forays into the Caribbean came about because of the hospitality business he started fifteen years ago, called Festiva Resorts, which also comprises Festiva Sailing Vacations with a base on the Tortola. The catamaran, “Lady Alexandra,” (named after his wife and musical muse) can be spotted sailing the BVI waters. Recently, Clayton released his music video, “Lucky Man,” filmed in St. Martin and his fourth music video, “Sailing” also filmed there, is due to be released later this month. The fusion of island sounds including reggae have formed a new style that Don now likes to call Caribbean Country or “Cabco.” Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be at Myett’s on Friday, and be the first to hear the country rock star’s debut in the BVI. It is sure to be a foot-stomping upbeat night. His latest music videos can be heard on his website www.donclaytonsongs.com

The band’s current singles are Tonight a slow groovy song, which was produced by AG Studios out of St. Thomas, and VI Link UP, which was produced by Relentless, Malik Brats and Simon Gust Lettsome. My Super Duper Breeze Blower tom line, not doing the job it is intended. Recently I was asked what I wanted for my birthday, and of course I said, “Oh nothing particular, you choose.” This was on one of those (recent) sizzling hot days, where the ridiculously weak ceiling fan was spinning in its ridiculously weak speed. I (maybe, or maybe not...) may have hinted that a free-standing stand-up fan might be AWESOME. And voila, my awesome S.O. came home and surprised me with our now new best friend, the Lasko super-duper breeze blower. I don’t use this expression often, but this little purchase was truly life changing. It oscillates. It has 3 speeds – mega, monsoon, and Cat. 5. It has it’s own little spot in the room where it works its magic. And makes life worth living, all over again.

Face it, folks. Summer is upon us, and it’s not getting any cooler any time soon. If you’ve got air conditioning in your house, well, you’d be among the lucky. We don’t. And really don’t want it anyway. We are fans of open doors and windows, with the natural breeze blowing through. But these are trying times. It is often too hot for even that. Plus, a whole new dilemma then presents itself, that of the bugs (or worse) who spy that open door, and just fly or trot right on in. Enter the ceiling fan. Blades swirling, creating breeze out of stock-still air. One in every room, if you’re lucky. Our’s in the living room works well. Not noisy, hi-speed only. The bedroom one, well, that’s another story entirely. Four speeds – low, slow, still pretty slow, and mediocre at best. BotLimin’Times Entertainment Gude

10 Ways to Improve your Relationship – Part 2 Ask Koren Last week, we looked at 5 ways of improving our relationships and mentioned not keeping score, being patient and respectful, honesty, keeping outsiders out of the relationship and positive communication. Let’s delve into 5 more as we endeavor to have hot, radiant, sweet love for the rest of the year! 6. Be present. When you are spending time together, focus on each other. Put away the cell phone, place work on the backburner and pay attention to the beautiful human being sitting beside you and think of how blessed you are to have such a wonderful person in your life. Which brings me to another important thing… 7. Acknowledge the good in your partner. If you are going to complain when they don’t act in ways that you like, at least have the decency to praise them when they are nice. Never ever forget why you chose this person to be yours. Look for things to compliment and highlight them instead of always mentioning the flaws. 8. Be forgiving. Many many relationships end because of bitterness or resentment. Holding on to the thought that you were wronged as though it were a survival tool will just destroy you. Know when to gently wash away your partner’s sins in the river of forgiveness and preserve the peace in the relationship. Instead of bashing someone for their mistakes, confront them yes, but let it be a learning opportunity for you both. 9. Put some effort into the relationship. Your relationship is not a fair ytale where two persons declare undying love and live happily ever after. Nope! It takes work. It’s daily committing to your partner even when they act in the most unloving

ways, it’s knowing when to compromise, its admitting when you are wrong, it’s understanding that the little things add up. 10. Take care of yourself. Deal with your own baggage and your hang-ups because your partner cannot fix you. Nurture and take care of yourself because you cannot give what you don’t have. Take time out away from your partner sometimes to do your own things and ensure that you are living the life you dreamed of so you can be happier in your relationship. Romantic love is the cherry on top of the icing on top of the cake; meaning some persons can choose to live without it, but for those who have it, it makes their life so much sweeter. Understand though, that like anything else, good love takes work. So if both parties are willing to put in the effort, you are in for what could be the most thrilling ride of your life. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 13

E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park An official ceremony on Friday night (ahead of the Pirates vs Power Outage Championships game), will rename the Old Recreation Grounds the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park. Brewley, a former pitcher, is the longest serving BVI Softball Association president and has been announcing and scoring games for the last 44 years. “A lot of people will say it has been a long time in coming but I’ll settle for that,” Brewley said on Sunday night. “I’ve probably spent more time here than any place else. I’ve seen a lot of good ball playing here. I’ve seen people like Berth “Bigman” Henley no-hitting team. I’ve seen the sport from almost its inception to when it was at its peak and now unless we get some good pitching it’s in its decline. I’m hoping that at some point in time, we can get some youngsters really wanting to pitch and applying themselves as pitchers. You just can’t be a weekend pitcher. You have to be out there practicing every day to be able to dominate any softball league. That’s what made Sheep, (Neville Smith), Bertie (Bert Henley), Mahassa (Raymond Mercer) and Woodrow (Allen Smith) and others good pitchers.” Brewley said his pitching career was cut short when former president Gaston Penn and Commissioner Carlos Downing found out he could score Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

14

and keep stats and told him that they needed him in the booth rather than on the field. “I pitched for a few years and wasn’t bad as a left handed pitcher, but then I was kicked up to the booth and worked my way up from Chief Cook and Bottle Washer. I spent 20 odd years as the president and now I’m in retirement,” he said laughing. “From 1974 I’ve been the official scorer in this league. When the Jets won the 1974 championship, I scored that game and kept stats. Before that, I played with the Blue Wings and kept stats for them.” Brewley recalled that managers had score books but could score and those who did, scored on bits of paper or card board but, no stats were being kept for the league. Around the same time, he began scoring he started announcing when games were played on the New Recreation Grounds now the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. “I’ve been doing both ever since,” he noted. Along the way, he was inducted into the International Softball Federation (ISF) Hall of Fame in 1999. “I’ve picked up a couple accolades along the way,” said Brewley who was also a Vice President of the Caribbean and Central American Softball Association. “It has been a pretty good ride. I enjoy what I’m doing or else I wouldn’t be in softball all this time.”
