Uniting Against Crime 2017 has brought more crime to the BVI than this peaceful community is used to, which has many residents worried. A handful of artists decided they could do more than worry, however, and are putting together a Stop the Crime rally and concert this Friday, June 16, from 6pm until midnight at the Tortola Pier Park. Although the concert itself is free, Stop the Crime t-shirts will be available for $15 each, with proceeds going towards a Lions Club effort to provide more security cameras as well as conflict resolution training in BVI communities. The decision to stage the concert “was a nobrainer,” Eustace “Boss” Freeman said in a recent television appearance. “Every day we wake up, we read the news, we realize we’re having an increase in crime.” He added that adults of the BVI “owe it to the next generation to halt this trend. We have to do whatever we can.” The Lions Club’s involvement was equally obvious, echoed Lion Carvin Malone. “When Boss put the program forward, it was

immediately embraced,” Carvin said, adding that Lions are aware that funding for public projects is “strained at best,” so they met with police officials about assisting with the purchase of additional CCTV cameras around the BVI. “We just have to do whatever we can. None of our communities will be safe unless all our communities are safe,” Carvin said. Some of the many artists who have volunteered to perform Friday are Ritseeniyah, April, Shiloh & Shedien, Alyssa Harrigan, Monique Cassandra, Jugo and Teejah (of VIBE), Xtreme Band, Kamau Georges, Jedi, Ritical, Sistah Joyce, NJAR, Mr. Devious, JJ and Maccabee. Their goal will be to perform positive, encouraging music, Boss said, adding that he’s been very gratified that so many performers have been willing to donate their time and talent for the cause. Need to get in a reflective mood ahead of the concert? At about 4pm emergency sirens will sound and residents are encouraged to stand and observe one minute of silence in memory of those lost to violence in the BVI.

Finding Balance Has this ever happened to you? You listen to a person complain about how they have so much on their plate and then someone else jumps in to complain that they have it harder because they feel their plate is even more full. It makes one wonder what that person has going on that makes them so special, after all, we all have our own battles to fight. I don’t believe that any two persons are the same; not even identical twins have the same personality. I do believe that every single one of us has their own tolerance and knows what they’re capable of handling. Currently on my plate: I am a mom of two, I have a job that requires long hours on certain days, I’m trying to get my business off the ground and taking a very challenging course at the college. When this semester was only a month in I started to wonder “Why I am doing classes?” and “Who send me?” Sometimes when I go study at night after the kids are gone to bed and I’ve gotten everything prepared for the next day I feel too tired to finish studying, but I keep pushing on because I have a goal. I’m going to pass this class and I’m going to finish my degree. I can’t pretend it’s easy. Sometimes my son would look at me and say “Mommy you’re tired. It’s Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

okay, I can do it myself.” So how do I not give in to (and dump out) my full plate? I know I will finish one step at a time. My race may seem slow to someone on the outside looking in, but I know my journey and what I can handle along the way. And I know I’ll get to the finish. Too many of us go about daily trying to please others and are not doing the things that make us happy. Wouldn’t you like to take off your mask? A journey is completed one step at a time. We can’t build buildings without constructing the foundation first. So whether our plate is full or half empty, you know what your tolerance is and what it takes for you to find your balance. Don’t let anyone tell you how to live because what works for you may not give them the same results, and what works for them may not work for you.

Waiting In Vain Dear Koren, My situation is that I’m in love with a lady who is dating an older married man. She has been with him for many years and he is her main financial provider. He can’t spend a lot of time with her and so she relies on me for that but I met her with him so I can’t ask her to stop. I don’t think she knows how much I love her. Hidden Figures Based on the book by Margo Lee Shetterly, Hidden Figures is a true story about unexpected heroes. Not the Sylvester Stallone or Jamie Fox type of movie hero – but unsung heroines who battle discrimination and adversity to do something extraordinary. The movie highlights the lives and achievements of three friends working as “computers” at NASA. IBM is developing a machine to perform the complex calculations that are needed to send a man safely in space, but until they do – it is people who do the computations. Taraji P. Henson plays Katheryn Goble Johnson. A former child mathematical prodigy, who earned a scholarship to an elite black prep school, she is one of several dozen “colored computers” working on the space program. In 1960s Virginia, segregation is still a way of life and separate but equal the law. Using the “Colored” bathroom and drinking fountain, is among the indignities they must endure. Kevin Kostner is Al Harrison, the head of the program charged with launching an astronaut into orbit. The only problem is he doesn’t have anyone capable of computing the complex calculations that are required – that is until Katherine is brought in. Once installed, she battles both the racist and sexist attitudes of her all male and white colleagues. Her faultless calculations are eventually recognized by Harrison who supports her work and in the process helps break down the racial barriers at NASA. “There is no color at NASA,” he says. Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer), who runs the Colored Computing Group, has run into her own obstacles for advancement. She is doing the
work of a supervisor, but is refused promotion and a pay increase by the woman who manages the division. When the IBM mainframe (which takes up an entire room) is finally installed, she is the one who figures out how to program it. The third friend, Mary (Janelle Monae) would like to become an engineer. But again racial discrimination throws up road block after road block. Through sheer will, and perseverance, Mary keeps her eye on her goal and even goes to court to be allowed to attend an all white school to take the courses she needs. Throughout the movie, we not only get an insight into the personal lives of these three extraordinary women, but also get a glimpse of the early space program, from rocket launching failures to successes. We see the race for space in the context of the Cold War (we need to beat the Russians), and the bravery of the astronauts who first went into space aboard tiny cramped capsules that were prone to losing their heat shields. Inspirational, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding, Hidden Figures demonstrates the power of human achievement. All three women went onto successful careers in the aerospace industry, and in 2015 President Barak Obama awarded Katherine Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the age of 96. 13

The Rebirth Of Pitching In the summer of 1987, softball reached its pinnacle when the BVI national team played Cuba for the Pan Am Games bronze medal, suffering a narrow 4-3 loss. Pitching was at its best, led by legendary Bert “Big Man” Henley. Since then however, the art of pitching has been on a slow decline and the dominant pitchers have gradually retired. At 16, Jayque “JQ” Hopkins is an unusual softball player. He’s interested in pitching and has been admiring Allen “Woodrow” Smith’s pitching since he was nine. “He inspired me and now he’s coaching me,” said Hopkins, who started pitching this year with the A’s, but has played all the outfield positions and first base. So why aren’t more young guys interested in pitching? Hopkins says it’s simple: “They’re scared to get hit in the face.” He added that he takes the game more seriously than many. “I’m not scared to get hit. I’m fearless.” Hopkins said he would go on the sideline and throw for fun. Terry “Chino” Chinnery noticed that Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
he was interested. “He saw that I was taking it seriously and he encouraged it,” Hopkins said. As it’s his debut season, he has never faced the batters before. He says the most challenging part has been deciding where to place the ball. “Finding their zones is hard,” he said. “But right now, I don’t have enough velocity to blow past them so I just keep the ball away from them.” As a pitcher, he knows he can’t do it all alone. “My team right about now is still trying to find itself because this is their first year playing too,” he said. “We are originally baseball players so we aren’t accustomed to seeing softball movements, but I think we’re doing good for our first year.” Smith has been working with him on pitching mechanics. Hopkins has been learning about the curve ball, knuckle ball, the riser and the drop ball. “He showed me how to put them in different places as well as the change up, especially the change up,” said Hopkins. “Terrance has been showing me that pitch since I was 14, but I never took it seriously. I just thought it was a fun thing. I never knew he was preparing me to play in the league. Playing in the league has been fun. It builds team work and bring you and others closer.” Hopkins has been playing baseball since he was seven, where he played outfield and pitched. But softball pitching is very different, he said. “To me, softball is a lot harder,” he said. “If you can play softball, you can perfect baseball. The training to hit softball for a baseball player is just to focus— see ball hit ball. In pitching, the front foot guides the ball and I use my front foot mainly to find the direction.” 14
