This Week’s Feature Story By Laura Thomas
Dirk Walters; Musician, Mentor & Family Man Often when you hear the name Dirk “Dirky” Walters you would automatically think member of Xtreme Band. However Dirky is much more than a band member. From an early age Dirky Walters recognized his gift or should we say love for music. He was able to mimic what he heard whether it was the beat or the melody. He first instrument was the Casio keyboard and he would listen to what the radio was playing then play it back on his keyboard. Dirky also made riddims for Jam Band and others in the 90’s, which gave him the opportunity to learn a lot and gained him the respect of persons like Jam Band’s legendary Daddy Friday. Besides music, Dirky works as a full time investigating officer. When the spotlight goes off, Dirky keeps himself busy by being on the road performing with his own band, engineering with for different groups, writing and producing music. He’s also into electronics and movies, having a drink with good people at some of his favorite spots, and traveling to experience different cuisines and

cultures. Dirky also loves to cook but says his greatest role is the one he plays at home. “Most of all I love being a father and spending time with my family,’ he says. Dirky’s latest project is called Ministry of Riddim, a social media series that celebrates musicians, artists, bands and other pioneers in the territory’s music scene. He is also dedicated to keeping VI culture alive and hopes the series can aspire others to do the same. Looking forward, Dirky has plans to keep busy on several fronts. “Future plans and current projects include artist development for newer members of Xtreme Band, the Ministry Of Riddim Album, my personal album called “Last of a Dying Breed,” which is going to feature some of the greatest talent in vocalists and musicians from throughout the Virgin Islands and Caribbean; and the new album from Xtreme Band, which will be released in 2017 and is already in the works. I’m also writing, arranging and producing for a number of artists outside of the VI,” he said.

Back 2 School Fever I don’t think that there’s another parent more excited for back to school than I am. Back to school means by the time my son finishes his homework, has dinner and prepares for bed, he won’t have the energy to fight me for a later bed time, because by 8:30pm he would be too tired. From learning in the classroom to playing at recess with his friends, the school day would have already consumed his energy for the day. I believe I can speak for all parents when I say we have a sense of relief when the running around to make sure our children have all the right tools for learning and their uniform ends and they actually go back to class. But have you ever given any thought to what our children go through when school reopens? I’ve heard many kids say that they get excited because they get to see their friends and hope that they are in their favorite teacher’s class. Unfortunately, many kids aren’t excited to head back to school after a long break like that of summer. It could be that they are going to a new school and are worried about making new friends, or they might be in the unfortunate situation of needing to repeat a class. As parents, our children’s education is very important, and we know that they will learn more if they’re more excited to be at school. Here are a few ways that you can make school more fun for your kids: Don’t make learning seem like a nightmare: Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
Most times we tell our children something like, “You’re going to school because I said so and that’s that.” Instead, show them why getting a good education is beneficial for them. Explain how there’s more to learning that just books. To show them how what they’re learning applies to their daily life, try using fruits or different objects for an at-home math demonstration that even preschoolers can appreciate. Learn with your kids: Education is not only for the kids. We as parents have to do our part, too. It’s not every time they ask a question we will know the answer. Take up their textbooks or copybooks and read what they learned for that day. Go over it with them so that when test time comes around, you can help them prepare. They’ll be more prepared in the high-pressure exam situation, and you might even learn something new. Listen to their concerns and offer solutions: Whenever my son doesn’t know a topic very well he is not happy. From the moment he got to the age of learning I always instilled in him “Knowledge is power and no one can take away your education from you.” If your child is falling short in a particular topic, help them or find someone else who can. There are many afternoon classes and after-school programs. Not every kid gets the concept the first time around, and by showing your child that asking for help is okay, you’ll also be teaching them an important life lesson. 6

Virgin Gorda residents are invited to do their part to help curb Zika, Chikungunya and other mosquito-borne illnesses by taking part in Project Bug Out cleanups in The Valley and the North Sound on Saturday morning. Volunteers will meet at the HLSCC parking lot and at Gun Creek at 7am. Experts say the best defense against mosquitos is cleaning up debris that hold water and are then used by the insects as breeding sites. For more information about the cleanups, contact Vincent Wheatley at 468-9418.
Wellness Walk The Ministry of Health and Social Development is hosting a 2.5-mile Wellness Day Workforce Run/Walk Friday afternoon beginning and ending at The Bandstand in Road Town. Ask Koren
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Mom the Middle Ask in Koren
thing that he and the children have in common. You also have the option of just leaving for a two-week vacation. Let them all learn to live together harmoniously. Cooking eggs together in the morning can unite people quickly, especially with no mom to call on for laundry or hard-tofind items. Without you as a buffer, they will find a way to communicate and function as a group. Also, if they compete for your attention and you are out of the picture, they can focus on each other. If the boys are not interested in his line of work, don’t force the issue. The responsibility of a healthy father-son relationship should not be theirs alone. Should they go into the yard and start climbing trees or loudly watch sports to prove they are not “momma’s boys” and worthy of his attention? That’s a bit unfair. Children should be loved and nurtured as they are. You and your husband should strive to improve your relationship; don’t just keep yourself occupied as a means of dealing with his absence. Engage in family activities; ask him to plan them with you and the children. Your husband should be accountable for building a relationship with his sons before he loses them. Communication and affection may not come easy to some men, but he could try.
Dear Koren, I’ve been married for 13 years and have 2 children, 11 and 8. When the boys were younger, my husband was more involved, but now, although he provides well for us, he doesn’t seem as connected. I’m used to it and keep myself occupied, but I worry how the distance will impact our sons. He thinks I spoil them and that they are mommy’s boys, while they think I always take his side. How can I get him to see himself as a dad and not just a provider? How can I get our kids to show more interest in their dad’s work? – Mom Dear Mom, Love and attention is not spoiling, but if you baby your sons or don’t give them any consequences when they misbehave, then perhaps dad has a point. You must understand your husband’s upbringing and his priorities to understand why he behaves towards his sons the way he does. Some men are raised to be breadwinners and to be tough because that’s the message they got from their parents, or their community. For these men, showing affection and too much of what they consider “soft” behaviour is not essential to raising boys to be men. After you have understood him, it’s only fair to acknowledge what your husband does well and identify what he is not doing enough of. It’s really hard to get people to change in their mature years, so telling him he needs to be this or that is likely to be met with resistance. Maybe you can suggest he do certain types of father-son activities that he thinks are suitable; it must be some-
