World Mental Health Day The BVI Health Services Authority invites you to wear your silliest hat today (Thursday) in support of mental health awareness, under the theme “Suicide Prevention”. In a press release, Director of Community Mental Health, Dr. Virginia Rubaine, indicated that the community must be able to recognize that apart from mental health and depression diagnoses, there are other factors that contribute to suicide. The Community is encouraged to think and talk before they tip their hat. She noted that suicide rates continue to rise throughout the region and in understanding the realities faced by families, it is important they receive adequate resources and support. Some warning signs of suicide are talking, thinking, reading or writing about it. Some persons thinking about suicide normally express that they feel

worthless/hopeless, lose interest in activities or increase/start using drugs or alcohol. If you suspect someone you know may be considering suicide, express your concerns to them, listen and offer support and most importantly take them seriously. Help can be found at the Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Major Peebles Wing, Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. For more information on Suicide Prevention and how to deal with someone you know contemplating taking their own life, please call 8527670 The community is urged to support mental health awareness by using the following hash tags. #BVI2019WORLDMENTALHEATLHDAY and #BVISILLYHATSUICIDEAWARENESS

Following up on my first Mommy & Me piece a few weeks ago, my initial plan for last weekend was to take my daughter over to Virgin Gorda for some bonding time at the Mommy and Me Sip & Paint Tea Party, but something came up and we couldn’t make the trip. Over the last year, my daughter has developed a tremendous passion for art (she got it from me). She is always drawing or colouring something. Her father and I have to continuously buy colouring books and more colours in the already huge array of crayons or markers for her. Since we did not get the chance to attend the event as planned, I decided I was going to make it up to her by buying her some paint and letting her paint whatever she liked. Little did I know about the adventure that was in store for me. On Sunday

when I told her to prepare herself to paint, I heard the sweetest little voice say, “Mommy, will you please paint with me?” Looking at her face, I just couldn’t say no, so I said, “Sure princess.” Given the excitement that followed, I knew I made the right choice and it warmed my heart simply because I knew my answer meant a lot to her. Let me tell you about the stress we had. First of all, I wasn’t fully prepared. I made a mental note that I needed to get her an easel and maybe a little less expensive one for myself because I know those words are coming again. I decided that we were going to head downstairs to paint because that would mean less work for me in the clean-up process. Secondly, the sun was blazing and on top of all of that, we didn’t have strong enough tape to stick the paper to the wall. After trying to find solutions downstairs, we ended right back upstairs on the table I was trying to avoid in the first place. The beauty about that, is the tablecloth is plastic and the paint is waterbased so it would be an easy clean. Once we began to paint, I couldn’t think of anything to paint for the love of God, so I googled an image and attempted to paint it. It was the first time I had ever seen a deformed flamingo – one of my own making at that. All of princess’ drawings were beautiful in my eyes and the more I complimented her, the more she thought of great ideas to paint – oh, she also told me she loved mine. At one point I asked if her eyesight was good but she just laughed and encouraged me to paint another picture. *Stay tuned for Mommy and Me Part 3.

Seven Deadly Sins Anger

An emotion characterized by antagonism towards someone who deliberately done you wrong. Serina and Josh have been a couple for nearly eight years. They met when they were teens but never got together until years later after college. When they first got together Josh was the most loving man, or so it would seem. He worshiped and adored everything about his girlfriend. He was what some women would deem a perfect man. However, five years into the relationship, things began to change for the couple and it was like Serina was dating a whole new man. How could a man go from perfect to practically being the devil? When it first started, Serina paid it no mind and thought it was just because of his frustration from the lack of a job and forgave Josh, but when it became a habit, she began to fear for her life. Josh’s infidelity and physical abuse began to take a toll on their relationship. However, being the woman that she was, Serina stayed with him in the hope of things getting better. Eventually, Serina began to despise Josh. Although they lived together, she would withhold intimacy and only produced the bare minimum for his benefit. He was even lucky to get a hot meal on some days. This only caused Josh to cheat more and although he still physically abused her, it wasn’t much lately because he started sleeping out. Serina’s thoughts. “This is it! I will kill him”. She was in the bathroom cleaning up the cuts and busted lip from the

slaps she had just gotten from Josh. Josh had not come home from work and Serina started to get worried. Since it was during the week and not weekend like he normally stays out, she really thought something happened to him. Grabbing her car keys and locking her home door on her way out to look for him at 3am, she was shocked to see he was in the driveway just reaching home. Not believing her mission, Josh had beaten her and accused her of going to another man while he wasn’t home. Like a good girlfriend, she cleaned herself up and went to bed. One month later, Josh didn’t come for a week. Normally, he would go for a night or two but would return. All week, Serina checked his favorite hangout spots and even showed up at his job. He had taken vacation or so she was told to keep her from coming back to his office. As luck would have it, as she wasn’t feeling well one afternoon, she decided to visit the emergency room. When she pulled up there was Josh leaving with a young woman and a newborn baby. Not wanting to make a fool of herself, she waiting until they left and she went inside. Josh was surprised to learn that Serina knew about the baby when he came by to pick up some of his stuff a few days later. May, 16th Breaking News headline, “32-yearold Josh Hastle found dead in his car at Breaking Peak Point”.

The gift of silence Sometimes the world is a noisy place and we crave a moment of peace where there is no noise so we can calm our spirit, soothe our soul and rest our ears. We leave work or town and rush home, only to find a noisy house. For those of us who live alone, sometimes we create our own noise when we switch from the television to the radio, to WhatsApp to Youtube and on and on. There are benefits to switching off everything once in a while and just enjoying the sound of our own breaths and the naturally occurring sounds around us. Silence gives us a moment of peace, it enhances our relaxation, we are able to meditate, to plan, to feel and to just be. We are able to reflect on our lives and in those moments of silence, sometimes we even fall into a deep sleep. It is a gift to tune out from the noise of the world. Some of us are quite uncomfortable with silence, because when there is no noise, then our own 13

thoughts become large and loud and we are often appalled by the way our mind focuses on the negatives around us; mistakes we have made are played back in full colour and in slow motion, our mind rewinds and replays past conversations or plans future ones where we keep a running dialogue in our head of what we will say and how the other person will respond and it goes on and on. Some of us need the external noise, because the internal noise is too much for us to bear. Let us put our anxieties about silence to rest and truly enjoy it for what it is‌ a private and very personal moment. Get into the habit of tuning out external noise and with meditation, you can also work on quieting some of the internal noise so that you can find true .................................................................. Malone’s Warning: ‘I’m Coming For Everything’ Ahead of being a guest on tonight’s Sports Beat Magazine on 90.9 FM, a motorcade and ceremony honouring her for her Pan Am Games gold medal achievements in August and a clinic on Saturday, Long Jumper Chantel Malone wrapped up her season on Saturday with a non-advancing 6.45m leap in the IAAF World Championships. With only three qualifying jumps to select the final 12, an aggressive Malone fouled the first, had a cautious 6.21 on the second before her 6.45 best effort. In the best shape of her life, she eyed an easy qualifier. “My run ups were great, practice run throughs were on target, my first one I went after it—it was a foul, so that doesn’t count,” she noted. “Then subconsciously, you start checking. You shouldn’t really change your mindset and in my mind, I thought I was doing the same thing, but subconsciously, you want to play it safe, because you only had three jumps. I definitely checked myself and held back, way more than I should have and that put me in a bad position.” The challenge with field events, is consistency and getting the body in the right position when it needs to be—something every field event athlete Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

grapples with. Malone, like Shot Putter Eldred Henry, will spend the off season working on honing their craft. She said she’s going to focus on the jumps, the runways and whatever she needs to hit. “I’m coming for everything. Simple. I don’t like to lose and I don’t like to not perform in the way that I know I’m capable of performing,” she said, noting that not repeating her 2017 feat as a finalist, was ‘a hard blow.’ “But, I always bounce back. That’s something I always pride myself on—being resilient. I’m gonna go back, train like I’ve never trained before; work hard and I’m gonna come back hard and I know Tokyo 2020 is going to be something special for me.” Like Malone, Henry, who competed on Thursday with a best of 20.13m non-qualifying mark in the Shot Put, had his best season ever. “Fouled my best throw in the second round, simple mistake—off balanced,” he said. “It wasn’t the way I wanted to make my first World Championships appearance but just gotta learn a lesson and move on.” Henry who was without a coach in the competition, noted that there are lots of factors that come into play. “Overthinking stuff sometimes causes that,” he stated. “At the end of the day, it’s one step at a time, one day at a time.” Henry, will join Malone and Kyron McMaster at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. In addition to, Ashley Kelly, each of them will be home and participate in a Saturday clinic, along with Tahesia Harrigan-Scott at the Multipurpose Sports Complex from 9am-1pm. 14
