Calling All Radio FansRoundup One of the great joys of driving on a quiet island road is listening to your favorite music, but with our remote location and challenging geography, radio reception in the BVI can be spotty. What’s a devoted listener to do? App developer and APEX-BVI founder Jhon Samuel hopes you’ll take to your smartphone and his new app, VI Radio. The free app is available on the App Store and in Google Play, and allows streaming from local BVI stations like ESHS RAMS Radio, TOLA Radio VI, ZBVI, ZCBN, ZCCR, and ZROD. You can also use it to connect to USVI stations including WSTX, Isle 95, Sunny 99.5 and Mongoose 104.9. Jhon says in addition to letting you take your music with you on the go, the app has a userfriendly interface that allows you to hear exactly

what the station is playing on the air live. He’s encouraging radio stations to use the app’s interactive features to engage the listeners by sending them push notifications for their favorite programs, or update their station’s banner with any news they want listeners to know about. Eventually, Jhon plans to expand the station choices offered from the greater Virgin Islands to other regional stations from countries including the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and St. Maarten. He hopes the greater offerings will help expats and visitors from those places feel more connected to home by using the app. Jhon and the APEX team are also the developers of VI Bites and our own Limin Times app.

Dear Koren, How do you know when the relationship has come to an end even when the love is strong? – A wife

changes, we can pray for change, ask them to change or wait for them to realize they need to change. In the end, it must be that person’s decision. So consider whether you can live with the person as they are now, because change is not guaranteed.

Dear wife, Sometimes, love can leave you feeling like you’re on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows. Things are wonderful one moment with lots of laughter, you both feel understood and accepted, the communication is flowing and you feel really in love; a few days later, you are having bad arguments, you feel rejected and the person feels like a stranger to you. This kind of love can leave you tired, physically and emotionally. You long for change, so the question is: do I stay and live like this or do I end it and move on? Everyone has personal negotiables and nonnegotiables – things they are willing to accept and compromise on and others that they are definitely not going to live with. Non-negotiables can be based on your personal choices but probably include things like an abusive relationship that puts you at risk of emotional damage or death or a partner who is a serial cheater who puts you at risk for diseases. Then you have the other things that might be less serious, but they still eat away at a part of your soul; things like poor communication, limited affection, constant fighting, a partner who doesn’t make time for family, acts of disrespect, different values around money, etc. If you are faced with your non-negotiables and your partner is not willing to work on things, then the relationship is toxic and walking away might be your best option to preserve your sanity. If, on the other hand, your partner is willing to work on the relationship, then there is hope. Understand this vital thing though: no human being can change another. We can wish and hope that a person

Here are a few other things to consider: Your partner is not you. His upbringing, genes and personality are different, so don’t expect the person to think, talk or behave like you. That is not possible. Understand who your partner is. Ask about his childhood, his passions, what drives him. When you truly understand your partner and know what his demons or challenges are, you will gain a better understanding of why he is the way he is. Watch those expectations of yours. We expect so much from others but want to be accepted with our flaws. Your partner will be grumpy sometimes, slow sometimes, forgetful sometimes and insensitive sometimes. You are dealing with a human being, not an angel. Also, a relationship is not a honeymoon. It takes work and commitment and there will be good days and bad; once you accept that, you can appreciate that there will be challenges. Sometimes you have to look at what you have, rather than what you don’t have. Pay attention to the positive even more than you do the negative. What would your life be like without this person in it? Love is not easy but it can be worth the work. Is the relationship you have worth saving? If both persons are willing and able to work on it, then give it your best shot. If you are slowly dying, please save your life. 9

Flying High Again It has been a rough year for Long Jumper Chantel Malone, after a stellar indoor season where she equaled her outdoor personal best of 6.69m (21’11½”). Earlier this year, she had a strong series with a best of 6.57m (21’6¾”) that has her ranked at No. 46 on the International Association of Athletics Federations listing. But then, disaster struck in April, when an injury curtailed the bulk of her season. In her first competition coming off that April injury and winning the Long Jump last week in Trinidad and Tobago with a wind-aided 6.70m(21’11¾”) leap, Malone improved her own OECS Championships record of 6.38m (20’11¼”) set on home soil last year, by leaping 6.67m (21’10½”) on her opening attempt, then matched the same distance on her second try. “I think it was a pretty solid day,” said Malone who climbed from No. 46 to No. 18 in the IAAF rankings and also No. 1 in the Caribbean, tying the Bahamas’ Bianca Stuart for the best mark among regional jumpers. “Going into the last meet and this meet, my whole thought process was just to go out there, do my best and try to come out in one piece. It has been a rough past two months for me coming back from fracturing my foot. Honestly, for anything right now, I’m thankful.” With the jump, Malone has bolstered her Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

chances to participate in the August 4-13, IAAF World Championships in London. She would join 400m Hurdler Kyron McMaster and the USVI’s Eddie Lovett as Virgin Islands athletes heading to London, ahead of the July 23 deadline to qualify. Her aim was to hit the World Championships qualifying standard of 6.75m (22’1¾”) but she noted that she didn’t have a lot of practice time before the last two meets. The IAAF will take the top 32 jumpers on its list to the World Championship and she’s currently in position to have her ticket booked. “I came straight from the pool, to the doctor’s office, to the track, so for me, it has been trying to get back muscle memory,” she explained. “I would say that the reason I’ve been jumping so consistently right now is because I’ve been doing a whole lot of mental repetitions and I think that played a role for me in the last few meets.” Malone noted that she was .01 off making the Rio Olympic qualifying standard last year and it was devastating not to make it. She said this year she came in thinking she would do whatever she had to do not to feel the way she did last year. “I was off to a good start, the unfortunate injury happened and I was definitely in a low place but I spoke to my old coach Bev (Beverly Kerney) and she has helped me mentally try to stay in it,” Malone explained. “My coaches at IMG, everyone there has been lifting me up. But, 6.67m is close to the qualifying so I can’t be mad about it.” 10
