Think Globally In particular, Dr. Hilaire will examine how trade between the mainland US and the BVI, as well as between the USVI and the BVI, stand to be affected by any new policies coming from the White House. He’ll also take a look at how US policies will likely affect tourism and financial services, the BVI’s two main economic sectors. After his talk, Dr. Hilaire will participate in a panel discussion on the topics raised and answer questions from the au-
Has the news of the world, and Trump’s America in particular, got you thinking about what it all means for us here in the BVI? This ticklish topic will be the subject of the final lecture in the H Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Spring 2017 Community Lecture Series happening at 7:30pm on Thursday, 27th in the Eileene Parsons Auditorium. At the microphone will be Dr. Max Hilaire, Chair of the Department of Political Science at Morgan State University and author of the book Waging Peace: The United Nations Security Council & Transnational Armed Conflicts. Born in Dominica and raised on St. Thomas, Dr. Hilaire is an expert on public international law, international human rights law, United Nations law and US foreign relations law. In Thursday’s lecture, “Politics and Policies of the Trump Presidency: its Impact on the Caribbean and BVI,” he’ll take a look at how the BVI’s relationship with the United States could change as the superpower redefines its own place in the world.

The committee planning the series hopes that by hosting local and international experts on topics important to the BVI community, they can foster a more informed intellectual debate within the BVI. “We think the topics for this upcoming series are timely and relevant to the community given all of the changes in the world,” said Kedrick Malone, the committee chairman. “I hope they contribute to more informed dialogue among community members.”

10 Ways to minimize stress every day We are all aware of the harmful effects of stress. I’m not talking about the good stress of a job promotion or preparing for a wedding or something like that. I’m talking about that debilitating feeling of having little or no control over your life, feeling constantly overwhelmed or just feeling as though life is too much to handle. Here are 10 simple ways to help you to be less stressed daily: 1. Stop trying to please everybody. You. Just. Cant! Learn to say no sometimes and know what activities and which people deserve your precious time. 2. Do the right thing. Live with honor and integrity and you will be at peace; a peaceful life is something all the money in the world can’t buy. Don’t do what’s easy, do what is right. 3. Enjoy love. We all need love but we must choose carefully whom we let into our inner circle. We must love ourselves always and find ways to show love to those we care about. 4. Engage in your passions. Find time to do something that brings you joy daily. Don’t let your life be an endless cycle of going to a job you hate, then going to a stressful home, having poor sleep then starting all over again. 5. Accept who you are. Don’t waste your time trying to change your skin color, be like others, compete with your neighbors, etc. Accept that you are wonderful as you are and enhance your natural self, rather than trying to be someone else. You are enough. 6. Be grateful. Count your blessings daily. That is not to say we can’t have hopes and dreams: by all means, dream big! However, rec-
ognize the gifts that are in your life right now and take nothing for granted. 7. Let go. Sometimes we hold on to old wrongs, ruminating on what was done to us years ago and plotting revenge; this makes us miserable and sick. We should let go of drama, toxic people, narrow-minded ideas and anything that holds us back from feeling free. 8. Develop discipline. When we can say no to instant gratification and be patient, we are not likely to fall into the trap of making impulsive decisions that cause us endless stress. We think before we act and make choices that are in our best interest. 9. Be open to learning. Knowledge that gives us power. We become enlightened and empowered, having a mind that is open to possibilities and options, which in turn minimizes stress in our lives. 10. Recognize that time is a gift. Every day, we are given 24 precious hours and some of us try to fill them with too many activities, leaving us running around frantic all day long, irritating ourselves and everyone around us. Others of us just waste the time hardly doing anything of worth. Time is precious and we must learn to pace ourselves; do things that are necessary, but take time out for laughter, fun and play. The day is yours. Of course it will take time to incorporate these changes in your life, but just start somewhere and keep practicing. It’s your life and you deserve to life it as happily as possible. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

The Fate of the FuriousBy If you are a fan of or even familiar with the Fast and Furious franchise you would know by now that Paul Walker, who played the role of Brian Conner on the series, is no longer alive. While others would have you believe that The Fate of the Furious, also known as Fast & Furious 8, does not live up to the others, I’d say if you liked the others, you should make time to check out this one too. If you’ve forgotten where we are in the series, the end of Fast & Furious 7 sees the retirement of Mia (Jordana Brewster) and Brian; while Dominic (Vin Diesel) finally marries longtime sweetheart Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). Fast & Furious 8 picks up just afterward, with the couple enjoying their long honeymoon while the rest of the family has found their respective versions of a normal life. Their new lives get shaken up by the arrival of Cipher (Charlize Theron), a cyberterrorist who coerces Dom to go to work for her. Even worse, she has him betraying the rest of the team and go rogue. Now, the rest of the team, including Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Ian Shaw (Jason Statham), must help new cast members Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) and Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood) find Dom and capture Cipher. You will also get to see the reappearance of old characters Tego and Rico
but if you blink you’ll miss their scene. As Cipher has Dominic on a series of dangerous missions that makes you wonder what it is that she has on him. As the family’s mission is to bring Dominic back and make the family whole again, Hobbs’ job is to bring down Cipher and get back his career. If you want to know what his career is on the line over you’ll have to watch the film. To go into more details will spoil the film’s surprises, so if you want to see how this installment of the franchise plays out, it’s now playing at UP’s Cineplex.

Reflections of a Marathon Guru On November 14, 1993, Virgin Gorda’s Velma George who lives in the Bronx, New York, established a BVI Marathon record when she ran the New York City Marathon in 4 hour 41 minutes and 30 seconds. She didn’t know she’d held the BVI record for 22 years until I met her during Saturday’s 3rd Tortola Torture (it was broken by Anna Kinkead’s 4:24.44 on Jan 10, 2016). “I’m impressed. I did not know that I held the BVI Marathon record, I’m very honored and have so much appreciation,” said George, who has completed 19 of the 26.2 mile races and one Ultra Marathon, a 37.2 miler. “I think Rey (O’Neal) had mentioned it to me but I forgot over the years. I’d like to do another Marathon somewhere, especially in the BVI.” Besides the New York Marathon, she has run the Connecticut Marathon and won a gold medal in Amsterdam in her age group in a Half Marathon. “They didn’t want us to run the complete Marathon because it was so hot,” she recalled of the Amsterdam run. “So they stopped the race half way. I would love to complete my 20th Marathon in the BVI, between running and walking I Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
would do my best to finish one here. That would be my biggest accomplishment.” Although she’s been forced off the road due to an injury lately, George says over the years she’s been called all kinds of names as a runner. “I’ve been called crazy and everything for running, but I love it and I miss it so much,” she said. “It has helped me solve a lot of my problems— things you go through and try to work it out—but I can’t do my distance running like I used to so I have to get back into it again.” She has also competed in two Sri Chimoy Marathons. Chimoy was a spiritual guru who encouraged long distance running. “Their Marathons are very peaceful, people singing and it’s well organized with healthy snacks,” she said. “They’re on a serious spiritual journey. Most of their women don’t have sex at all but they do a lot of world harmony runs. They also do heavy meditation.” George got into running during as a student at Lehman College, where running helped her manage her stress. Later on, an 18-year-old encouraged her to run a 10K. “I did it without registering for the race and completed it in under an hour and he said ‘see, you can run,’ so I started from that,” she remembers. “I kept running with the group doing distance running, hill running. I used that period of time when I was in college, stressed out with life and as a young mom, to work out my problems. I love running alone and making decisions as I ran.” She added: “Running is the thing that really kept me grounded. It allowed me to be me, live my life and have fun at the same time.” 14
