Hempfest On JVD Some nations have decriminalized it, others have made it legal for medicinal purposes and still others are talking about legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. Options abound, and so do opportunities when it comes to cannabis. Whatever side of the topic you’re on, famed Jost Van Dyke troubadour Philicianno ‘Foxy’ Callwood hopes to foster the discussion this Saturday, July 7, at Hempfest at his bar and restaurant in Great Harbor. “I’m not encouraging anybody to smoke,” Foxy sings on his video invite to the event, “I want you to come talk and discuss about it.” The free, family-friendly event will be a day of speakers, food, art and music beginning at 10am. USVI Senator Positive Nelson is slated to speak, as will Mark Wenner, as well as the BVI’s Sowande Uh-

uru, and they will address the medical, legal and social aspects of different legalization options. Round-table discussions will follow the presentations. There will also be nearly 30 vendors of produce, books, natural body products, clothing, and plenty of BVI and USVI artists on hand sharing their work. Beat the summer heat with waterslides for the kids plus a fashion show featuring BVI designers. Throughout the day, musical guests will entertain the crowd. Expect appearances by VIBE, Tia, ILL Mindz, Maccabee, Shine-I, I-Knowledge, Inity Xplosion, Revalation Da Royal, and of course, Foxy himself. Blues will be the master of ceremonies. Catch the New Horizon Ferry from West End to Jost Van Dyke at 10am, noon, 6pm or 8pm with returns at 5pm and 7pm. For more details, visit facebook.com/foxysbvi or call 442-3074.

Beeps of the BVI One of the joys of island driving is the liberal use of the horn. For those unfamiliar, there is a whole language among drivers and instead of words and sentences, the language is made up entirely of beeps. It took me a long while to understand the nuances of the beeps, probably because I learned to drive in Southern California, where the horn utters sounds so rude they aren’t even called beeps. They’re called honks. The Southern California horn, I am not proud to say, is long, loud and always means one thing: “watch it, jerk!” The BVI’s beeps, by contrast, are varied and sophisticated. Most of them are mild in meaning. There is the friendly beep to say to the vehicle waiting to join traffic that you are yielding so they can come in front of you. Or, there is the equally friendly beep to say thank you to the vehicle that has allowed you to come into traffic on the highway. Slightly more impatient but still basically friendly are the shortish beeps to let you know that while you have looked away from the traffic light to admire the plumage on a passing rooster, the signal has changed from red to green. The lights stay red entirely too long for this honk to be ignored. On the hills, there is also the very utilitarian blind corner beep. Especially during daylight hours Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
when headlights aren’t available, this is a great way to make sure that you and another vehicle don’t enter the same switchback from opposite directions. This beep is, by necessity, louder. It’s also saved me from a hill crash at least once. If you happen to be driving or walking near someone taking a driving lesson, you might hear the pedestrian beep. This is the beep all drivers are supposed to sound to let a pedestrian know a vehicle is coming, in case they don’t realize they are walking on a road that has vehicles on it. This one also has a more personal version, the “hail-up” beep, which is reserved only for pedestrians that are also friends or family members. I also have one very special beep of my own, but anyone is welcome to it. It’s the accidental beep. Maybe I am trying to get something out of the baby’s bag before I exit a parking pace or I have something in my hand or just have bad aim on the steering wheel sometimes, but it happens and I beep the horn. The trick is to style it out by giving an enthusiastic wave at whoever happens to be standing nearby like you meant to beep at them just to say “hey!” 6

The Cold Hard Truth About Love Romantic comedies, family sitcoms and love books we grew up with have really given us a lot of unrealistic expectations. The guy is handsome, the woman beautiful and, after a bit of playing hard to get, the hero captures her heart and they live happily ever after. If it reflected reality, the story would have a disclaimer that says “happily ever after does not mean the absence of arguments, heartbreak and pain. Instead, it means that the couple will be committed enough to keep creating more happily ever afters.” So here’s a bit of a reality check for all of us: 1. Life doesn’t get easier but love can get stronger. Between bills to be paid, losing jobs, sickness and all the other things that fall into the latter category of “for better or for worse,” reality can hit us some hard blows that detract from the blissful state of togetherness we aim to create. Let the challenges draw you closer by getting a front row seat to your partner’s strengths, putting your heads and hearts together to strategize, plan and figure things out as the team you are. If you do, these trials can strengthen, rather than weaken, your love. 2. The honeymoon doesn’t last forever. The hotel suite and the sweet words are a great start, but you will eventually have dirty dishes, a yard to be cut and noisy children who eat everything in sight. But navigating real life together can create beautiful moments knowing at the end of the day, that “I am his/hers and he/she is mine.” 3. People change over time. The person who was once patient and kind and did everything to please you, now might not be making so much of 11
an effort. He or she might be getting older, grumpier and facing their own life changes. Be patient and don’t try to keep your partner in a mold. Allow them to grow and shift your understanding to the new reality. 4. It takes two to tango. No matter how much you try to fix a relationship, you can only fix yourself and try to create a pleasant environment. If the other person does not want you after repeated attempts to make things better, or is not committed to repairing the relationship, your efforts will be futile. Know when to accept defeat. 5. Forgiveness is a pill that’s bitter in the mouth, but sweet in the belly. As difficult as it is to get past the hurts and betrayal that cut right down to your soul, it is necessary for your survival and the survival of the relationship. It means moving past the hurt and not bringing it up every chance you get. Many relationships are worth saving, if only partners can be more forgiving. Love can be messy and painful but beautiful and inspiring. In spite of all the challenges, true love really is worth it because overcoming the hard times makes the good times all the sweeter. Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 6: Fanning the Flames
Jazz I got up from bending over the toilet and turn the shower on. I’m still torn torn about this baby. Truth is, Kevin will not leave his wife for me and he made that clear from the start and James may spend bank on me but he is not capable of being a dad. Not to mention the biological father of this child might be either one of them. I needed to make up my mind and fast because my doctor’s and abortion appointments were both scheduled for Friday: I can’t make it to both, so whichever choice I make, I’ll have to stick to. People might judge me if they knew this was what I’m thinking about, but I grew up in rags and refuse to live that way forever, and I’m definitely not subjecting any child to that life. I’ll do whatever it takes and nevermind the judgements… Kevin Dammit these pants waist are tight! How can someone that lives in the gym put on so much weight in two months? If the old saying is right, this could only mean one thing: Jazz was pregnant. I knew it couldn’t be my wife because her tubes are tied. I damn sure don’t want any more kids, which Jazz knows very well. She told me she was on the pill, how can this be? I got my phone and texted her to meet me at our spot around 10. As I waited for her to arrive, I hoped she had a plan for what she is going to do if she really is pregnant because I damn sure ain’t want it. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
By 11:45 Jazz still hadn’t shown up. Did she not see my message? Maybe she already knew what I wanted to know and decided to ignore me. Instead of going home, I drove up to Jazz’s house. I was not going to bed without knowing what the deal was. I was just about to get out my car when I saw Jazz walking a man down her drive way to the Mercedes park two rides in front of me. Who was this man and why was I getting angry at the site of their affection? Jazz From the moment I got outside with James I saw Kevin’s vehicle. He must know by now that I was ignoring him, but why is he here? He hardly ever comes over because we wanted to be discrete. After I watched James drive off I walked over to Kevin and invite him inside. No need for a scene at this hour for these nosey neighbors to have thing to talk. Before Kevin can open his mouth to ask questions, I let him have it. Kevin Jazz was angry, telling me I had no right to come here, but I could barely concentrate on her words because she had slipped off her robe and the only thing I could think of was having her right there. Her words and that man I just saw her walk out with were the furthest things from my mind. I grabbed her and kissed her hard, making her shut up and give in. 12
Been There, Prayed That Been There, Prayed That is book two of the New Day Diva Series written by E. N. Joy. Before dedicating her life to Christ, she was a secular writer, writing under the names Joylynn M. Jossel and JOY. The characters in this series will keep you entertained until the final page. It centers the lives of the members of New Day Temple of Faith, in Malvonia, Ohio and Living Word, in Living Waters, Kentucky. Up to this point in the series, Mother Doreen has been in Ohio, but in this installment, she has moved to Kentucky to take care of her sick sister Bethany, her younger sister and only living sibling. Bethany’s husband Uriah isn’t up to caretaking because he’s a truck driver that is always on the road. The pair has two children, Sadie and Hudson. Mother Doreen, who has a strong faith, begins to suspect something wasn’t right when Assistant Pastor Frey seems to pay a lot of special attention to Bethany, and her suspicions only grow when she notices her sister’s belly is also growing. One thing is for sure, Bethany’s marriage and her church aren’t what they seem. Will the truth break Mother Doreen’s trust in her sister? When tragedy strikes the family, how will the sisters make peace? Back home in Malvonia, Sister Lorain, the newly appointed leader of New Day Temple of Faith Single’s Ministry has good home and a strong relationship with God – or does she? Sister Lorain can’t seem to get along with, much less say anything nice to, 13
fellow church sister Unique. Let me tell you a little about Unique: she is ‘hood.’ Her mouth gets the best of her, but she does have three well-mannered, beautiful children. Could jealousy over these kids be the real reason Sister Lorain looks down on her? Sister Lorain also has a dark past and lives as though she has forgotten that what’s done in the dark must come to light. Throughout the book, these two women have more cat fights than anything, only God knows why the pastor hasn’t thrown them out of church. He comes up with an idea to make the woman work together on a project in hopes that spending time with each other would allow them to be civil to one another. With sister Lorain constantly looking down on Unique and finding something negative to say to her, the Pastor’s plan may backfire. Meanwhile over on the coupled-up side of church, Tamarra and Maeyl’s relationship seems to be progressing perfectly until someone from Maeyl’s past shows up to Easter Sunday Service. Tamarra is no saint either. In fact, when her buried secret comes out it might cost her her relationship with Maeyl and with her best friend. Will things work out between for this small circle? Get the New Day Divas Books from Amazon or from the author at www.enjoywrites.com. Vol. 30, 13 / July 5 - July 11, 2018
Cricket Heats Up Grenada has begun tossing teams out of the Flow-Peter Haycraft Twenty 20 Cup in Greenland, starting with hosts Road Town Wholesale last week. Grenada recovered from a 3 for 8 start and six batsmen combining to produce a paltry nine runs, by using a 56 run partnership between captain Derol Redhead and Irwin Lewis to kick RTW to the curb. “We lost our focus,” RTW captain Joel Williams said. “We had a little dispute with the umpire and after that, the game went down the hill.” RTW recovered from 4 for 50 to post a formidable 149, with opener Sylvester Mitchell getting 36, before he became one of Gary Prince’s 4 for 42 haul. Austin McDowall, who struggled to reach a half century this season, was caught for 31. Grenada overcame their 5 for 27 start when Redhead—who had a not out 53—and Lewis put on a 56 run partnership for the ninth wicket to take them to victory. “We had the confidence in ourselves that we could win the game,” said Williams, who snatched 2 for 42. “All we had to do was put the ball on the right spot and we did that, but, we bowled a couple no balls and it cost us.” Redhead said they went in knowing that a victory would get them to the second round, therefore, it was an important game. “We just had to come out and show that we were ready to play in the second round,” he said. “It was a team decision to send them to bat and I Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
think our bowlers did a good job restricting them to 149, a total that was challenging, but we had the batting to get there. We didn’t bat as we expected to.” Despite their belief, six of Grenada’s batsmen combined for nine runs including two ducks. “I think the guys went in there overconfident, knowing that it was a small target and played lackadaisical,” Redhead said as they had a 3 for 8 start. “I knew I had to go in there and steer the team to victory.” On Sunday, Gary Prince ripped through Virgin Gorda’s order for five wickets and Denron Frederick chimed in with the fifth century of the tournament, helping Grenada to secure a five wickets victory, the sent the visitors home for good. Prince who bagged 5 for 35, triggered a middle order collapse that saw Virgin Gorda losing six wickets for 63 runs, before they were out for 165. In reply, opener Frederick piloted Grenada to 171, finishing on 105 not out. “I kind of batted with some anger, in terms of the first two wickets, it wasn’t a fair play by the umpire. I didn’t appreciate it and just decided to beat everything that come,” Frederick explained. Phillip said Virgin Gorda didn’t field well and dropped several catches. “Their batsman went on to make a century but he got dropped very early,” Phillip noted. “This is where the game really changed for us. It’s not that we bowled really bad. We just didn’t catch well.” 14

Daily Sudoku: Tue 3-Jul-2018
The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-gris’ that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or colum within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. 15
