Ready Soapbox Racers? If you’ve got kids with a need for (safe!) speed, you’ve still got a couple more weeks to build a soapbox car for the annual BVI Motor Sports Association and Caribbean Insurers Limited Soapbox Derby happening July 9 on the grounds of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. Launched in 2014, the event sees teams of families, businesses, clubs, neighborhoods and schools working together to build vehicles that range from stripped-down metal frames to basic rectangular wooden boxcars, to elaborate custom shaped cars with colorful paint jobs. Seeing the creativity of the various builds that people come up with, sometimes including matching outfits, is worth the trip. But the real drama of the day is the racing. For the soapbox car competition, racers aged 7 to 16 will compete two-at-a-time, with officials tracking times to determine the winners. The day will also include other family-friendly fun like live music, a dunk booth, a bounce house and an Umi fashion show. You can also support the BMSA at

their food both. But not anything on wheels will be allowed to race! Soapbox cars will need to pass a safety inspection before they can compete on the downhill track from the HLSCC roundabout to the finish line. Each vehicle will need to be steerable, sized 80 inches long by 30 inches wide or smaller, and its wheels can’t be larger than 20 inches across. Each car also needs to have a securely attached seat and at least three, but no more than 6, wheels. Brakes are encouraged, but not required. The drivers themselves will need to wear shoes and helmets to participate, and are strongly encouraged to wear knee and elbow pads. Entry is $25 per soapbox car, but all are welcome to watch the action and enjoy the other activities on the day of the event. Entry will cost $2 for kids, $5 for adults, and the fun starts at 11am. Registration forms are available from the Road Town offices of CIL, or you can download electronic forms from their website http://www. caribbins.com.

Language, dialects, & accents in the Caribbean Living, now, in the Caribbean for 34 years (THAT sure crept up on me!) I can’t help but have noticed the difference in how Caribbean people speak, whether to each other, or a completely new and different group of people. To an untrained ear, Caribbean ‘lingo’ may all sound alike. It definitely took me a while to notice subtleties in dialects and accents. Folks hailing from St. Lucia, from Antigua, from Dominica, and all over our part of the Caribbean have, not necessarily vast differences in how they speak, but the differences are there, nonetheless. The countries they are associated with play a role in the subtleties, too. There is a French lilt to the speech of Guadeloupe, French St. Marten, and St. Barths natives. The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) reflect the Dutch overtones of their historic mother country, and of course Puerto Rico and the Domincan Republic have a Spanish flavor. ‘Short cuts’ in pronunciation play a big role in informal language too, as some words are chopped up, with a syllable or two being left out unsaid, even the occasional full word. Listening to my own children, who were all raised in the West Indies, ‘flip’ into Crucian speech patters when with their Crucian friends was always amusing. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

6

Some of my West Indian favorites come to mind: “Whu pah yo der?” (Where are you?), “How you mean?” (What do you mean, please explain?) and the simple ‘Ahyo’ (All of you). One of my favorite language moments stars two Antiguan men and my mother. These two fellows were down in the cistern, cleaning it. There was a ladder between the house and cistern for the men to get up and down. There was lots of chatter, some arguments, and my mother (who has actually been living in the Caribbean longer than I) looking at me, totally mystified as to what they were saying, as every sentence seemed to end in ‘Huh’? I became inadvertent translator, and the job got done. I remember back in my college days, at UVI in St. Croix, taking a course in linguistics that was fascinating, and an eye-opener. I was assigned a term paper, on the differences between Puerto Rican Spanish and Dominican Spanish. Pronunciation differed a bit, as did some words themselves that had different meanings entirely. But as it seems to often go, the less-than-kosher words were the words that really stood out. But since this is a family publication, we won’t even touch those.

Everything, Everything “I have never been outside,” says the lead character of this film during the trailer. I was sold immediately from that line alone, and after watching it I was not disappointed. Everything, Everything is a story of two young lovers overcoming obstacles to be together. If you feel like you recognize the stars from somewhere – you are right! Amandla Stenberg was young Cataleya in Colombiana and Rue in Hunger Games. Nick Robinson was Zach in Jurassic World. Young Maddy (Amandla Stenberg) is a beautiful girl who is also very imaginative, a skill I think is a blessing for a person with a rare sickness like hers. Her illness means she’s been stuck in the house all her life – Remember the boy in the bubble? She has the same condition. With nobody but her mother to interact with, she would need to be a creative soul to keep her from going insane. So how exactly does Maddy pass the time? Apart from doing classes online, she also reads books and posts reviews online. Aside from her mom, the only person Maddy is used to interacting with in real life is her nurse Carla (Ana de le Reguera) who is with her during the day while her mom is at work. Things change for Maddy when new neighbors Olly (Nick Robinson) and his family move in next door. Despite Maddy not being able to go outside to meet Olly, the two teenagers find a way to communicate. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts and email, Maddy and Olly form a deep bond.

The more they get to know each other, the more they fall in love. Olly starts to show Maddy that she isn’t really living stuck in her house all the time, and she realizes she doesn’t just want to survive, she wants to have an adventure. There is only one thing that Maddy would really love to see and experience, and she finds the courage to go for it even though her mom wouldn’t approve. She invites Olly to go with her. Scared that something may happen, he encourages her to go back into the house but she doesn’t. Despite his worries, Olly decides it’s better to follow Maddy than to have her go off on her own. What is this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and what will it mean for Maddy’s health? Everything, Everything is now playing at UP’s Cineplex. 13

Confessions of a Marathon Maniac Grenada native Philomena “Philo” Robertson, ran her first Marathon in 2011 on a lark after reading about a Chicago firefighter who ran the Chicago Marathon for a charity. Spurred into action, she researched Marathons affiliated with any charities in her homeland and found Reach Within, a charity that works with disadvantaged children. The New York Marathon had spots available, so she connected with the charity and began her Marathon sojourn. “Mind you, this was four weeks before New York, my longest distance [at that time] was a Half Marathon and it wasn’t like I’d done one recently,” she noted. “But, I was up for the challenge, signed up and started raising funds. The support wasn’t that great, but I was able to raise a couple hundred dollars for the initiative and was happy for that.” Her goal time was 4 hours and 30 minutes, and she ran 4:38. “It was hard. It was painful and at the finish line, my body hurt but at the same time, I was like ‘I did this. I want to do it again,’” she said. Hurricane Sandy wiped out her New York Marathon plans in 2012 and she didn’t run in 2013, but has competed each of the last three years, all in Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

support of Reach Within. Since 2011, she has completed 18 Marathons including 15 between November 2015 and November 2016. She’s since become a Gold Member of the Marathon Maniacs Club on the basis of three Marathons within 90 days, and recently joined the Half Fanatics Club when she completed the Conquer the Wall Half Marathon in Beijing, China on May 13, and the VG Half Marathon on May 27 within 16 days. Completing a Marathon, she said, is a journey. “You go through a range of emotions,” she said. “There’s just a lot of people, a lot of energy at the start, the adrenaline is flowing and you’re all excited. So the first couple of miles, you’re running on that adrenaline.” As the Marathon progresses, however, there is a shift from the physical challenge to the mental and emotional one, she said. “It’s just mile after mile after mile. It’s endurance, not just physically, but mentally. It becomes a mental battle at some point during the race, because your body can take you so far, but there comes a point when you have to just focus and know that each additional step is going to take you there.” Robertson said she faces an additional challenge of not being built like the typical distance runner, with their light, lanky frames. “I have a big body and carry a lot of bodyweight around so I think that makes the journey harder,” she said. “But, I’m just focused and determined on getting to the finish line once I start and that’s the mission and I always get it done.” 14
