BugOut BVI, a non-profit organization that works to control mosquito populations on Virgin Gorda, is hosting a pair community cleanups on the sister island this Saturday, Nov. 12. They’re meeting up at the VG campus of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College at 7am for the morning session and again at 4:30pm for those who aren’t early risers. The group will tackle the area around The Baths and Bregado Flax Educational Center. You can find out more about BugOut and their ongoing cleanup efforts by visiting www.bugoutbvi.org or www.facebook.com/bugoutbvi If you’re on the fence about attending one of BugOut’s cleanups, or if you’re considering organizing one of your own on another island, I think you should! Here are my top reasons why: 1. Doing your duty: I attended a recent cleanup in East End and, to me, the most satisfying aspect of participating in one of these activities is knowing you are doing your part to help curb mosquito breeding and the spread of mosquito-borne viruses like dengue, chikungunya

and zika. I also have a theory that such cleanups are good Karma: I haven’t gotten zika yet! 2. It’s active: Going to a cleanup will get you out of the house and walking around, which helps you can get in your recommended steps for the day. And yet… 3. It’s easy: Let’s be real, if you’re able-bodied and fairly active, especially if you have a “picker” tool, picking up bags full of disposable drink and food containers for a couple of hours is not a difficult thing to do. 4. It’s social: I went to a cleanup with two good friends, and we got to have a rare catch-up session while we worked, which made the time spent working fun. What’s more, I made a few new friends while I was there, and who doesn’t want more community-minded friends? 5. It’s educational: Going on this particular cleanup taught me a lot about where mosquitoes find a bit of standing water to lay their eggs, which means I’m better able to look out for those things at my home and office.

Boo! A Madea Halloween By now most of us are familiar with Tyler Perry and his character Mabel “Madea” Simmons. Just like his previous work, this film will not disappoint you as his character Madea (played by Tyler Perry himself ) keeps you on the edge of your seat. The opening begins with Brian (also played by Tyler Perry), his daughter Tiffany (played by Diamond White) and her friends walking past a fraternity house. The frat guys stop the group and eventually invite them to come to their Halloween party later that evening. Being that Tiffany is only 17 here, dad would not allow her to attend the party. He had planned to send Tiffany over to her mom’s house while he is away for a few days but instead he calls his Aunt Madea to come and watch the girl while he is gone. Madea agrees to watch her but also brings along her brother, Brian’s dad Joe (yet another character played by Tyler Perry), Aunt Bam (played by Cassi Davis) and Hattie (played by Patrice Lovely). In order to sneak out of the house and go to the party, Tiffany comes up with a brilliant idea to scare the “old people,” as she refers to Madea and the rest of the gang, into to bed early. Upon discovering that Tiffany has sneaked out Madea, Aunt Bam and Hattie set out to look for her. When Tiffany and her friends see Madea outside the fraternity house, she decides to hideout with one of the frat guys who eventually learns that Tiffany is only 17. The police wind up shutting down the party and Madea and the gang

leave after an unsuccessful search for the teen. Because of the ghost story previously told — or in Aunt Bam’s case, because she was high on her medical marijuana — when the gang returned to Brian’s house strange things begin to happen. Joe, who was too high to care what they were scared over, never listens to anything they have to say and opts to stay at the house while they make their great escape. The adventure that follows includes a car breaking down and a spooky chase by ghosts and zombies. Those familiar with Madea’s character would already know the ongoing joke that is her mispronunciation of various words, down to the way she calls the Lord’s name (she says Lort). Get this; Madea was so scared getting chased by zombies that she ran all the way to the church to give her life to the Lord and even called his name correctly for once. Once the scare has past, Madea enacts the best revenge I’ve ever seen her do… But you’ll will have to see the movie to know what happens to niece Tiffany. Boo! A Madea Halloween is now playing at UP’s Cineplex. 9
