Boogie at the Bay

Fans of boogie-woogie and piano-driven rock and roll won’t want to miss the return of Mitch Woods to Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay. Classically trained but better known for his “pile-driving piano,” the energetic musician puts on a set full of blues, soul, and rock and roll worth dancing to. Reviewers have compared Mitch favorably to the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, and he counts those and other greats including Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Joe and Jimmy Liggins, Amos Milburn, and Roy Milton among his influences.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

Although based in California, Mitch has lived and performed in musical hotbeds like Greenwich Village and New Orleans, and now tours, often with his band the Rocket 88s, around the world. In fact, one of his projects is a live recording of what the band calls their “rock-a-boogie” style in Istanbul. The CD was also released with a DVD travelogue documenting their adventure traveling and performing in Turkey. More recently, Mitch took to the seas on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. The album recorded while aboard, “Jammin’ on the High Cs” is full of the pianist and band leader’s humorous anecdotes, which we are sure he’s bound to share during his appearances at Myett’s. Catch his dinner-time performance on Wednesday the 16th beginning at 6:30pm. Another dinner show is set for nest week Friday the 18th, and Cane Garden Bay will send Mitch off in style with a brunch show Sunday the 20th. Reserve your table for this legendary performer by calling 495-9649. Keep up with Mitch’s latest tour dates (and his star-studded throwback videos) online at mitchwoods.com, or www.twitter.com/mitchwoods88.

After wanting to participate for ages, this year I finally got it together and joined in the annual Christmas Bird Count. If you’ve never heard of it, the count is a bit like a census, with birdwatchers taking to the field (or sometimes their own backyards) to identify and count the bird species they see. While the BVI is home to many different birds, the Christmas Bird Count is an international project, with volunteers from around the US, Canada, and parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean, all designating the last weeks of December and first few days of January as the time they will count in their local area. Although there are places that have had counts all the way back to the year 1900, the history of the event here in the BVI is pretty respectable, with the National Parks Trust recording counts going back to 1988. Being a novice when it comes to identifying birds, I tagged along with a more experienced birdwatcher in my Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

6

neighborhood. Together, we spotted a sparrow hawk, a bird of prey that I’m pretty sure I’ve seen hunting from the treetops near my deck. I learned what an ani looks like. We also counted a couple of thrushies, which are more properly known as pearly-eyed thrashers, but which I personally think of as papaya thieves because I can never get to a ripe one before they peck holes in it. Naturally, the birds that were most common on our path were the chickens, which don’t get counted. Between the sizable puddles from that morning’s rain and the rather small wheels on the stroller I was wheeling the baby in, we decided to cut our walk short, but I still count the morning’s adventure as a success: The little one and I got some fresh air, I learned a bit from my birding buddy about bird calls and behaviors, plus I got to contribute (albeit only a small bit) to a really cool global science project. I had so much fun that I’m already planning my next birding adventure.

She Devil

An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary

Chapter 1: Meet Angel Look at that good-for-nothing Troy. I made it clear to him if I catch him with Britney again there will be hell to pay. I’m the queen of this strip club, I bring in the most money and everybody is going to respect my territory. I didn’t care if Britney sleeps with the boss, but Troy the bar tender was mine and mine alone. Tonight he has Tracy all over him, but she was just putting on a show to get a rise outta me. I’ll deal with that trifling matter later. For now, the club is full of ballers and I’m about to make some money. I started by greeting Sean, one of my regulars. He said that yes he did want the usual, but, seeing how full the club was, he asked me to save him for last. I walked away making a mental note to thank him later. Sean has been coming to the club for the last four years I’ve been working here and was always present on a Tuesday and Friday night. Over the years he’s become more than just another client. We have real conversations and he’s one of the few people who knows how I am and why I do this work. As I paused to scan the club, I heard a sexy bass whisper in my ear: “How about giving me a dance shorty?” I spun around and came face to face with a tall dark and handsome chocolate man. The way he was looking at me gave me thoughts about of all 11

the things I’d let him to do me for no charge whatsoever. I felt vibrations go through my thighs. “So can I?” he asked, bringing me out of my nasty thoughts. “Sure,” I said, “How about a private show?” I asked. “Give me what you think I deserve,” he replied with a naughty grin. Looks like Mr. Chocolate wants me to take advantage of him. I signaled for John the floor guy to give me the next available room. Once I had him alone, I was giving him the dance of his life, but he was oddly unresponsive. “What happened daddy? Are you afraid to put your hands on me?” I asked. “I won’t bite.” He just smiled and continued watching as I danced my heart out, continuing to drop the hints that he could take it further. When his 45 minutes was up, I lead him back into the club. Just before I walked away, that deep sexy voice whispered in my ear again, telling me he’ll see me again soon. Ooo child, the chills that went through my body. By the time business slowed down, I had made enough to cover two months’ bills and still give some back to the house. Not bad for a weeknight! …………………………………………………………………………........... *Author’s note: This story is in adult content and not appropriate for minors. Vol. 30, 39 / Jan 10 - Jan 16, 2019

OMG Jason Momoa is a hottie! No I’ve never watched Game of Thrones, nor do I remember his character from Baywatch - Hawaii so I’ve only just noticed. You best believe I’ll be following his career now. Aquaman begins with Atlantis Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) escaping an arranged marriage and coming to the surface world, where she falls in love with human Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison). The pair conceived Arthur/Aquaman (Jason Momoa), who is half Atlantean and half human. To protect her son, she had to return to Atlantis without him, but not before making his father vow to never forget her. On her return home, she married another Atlantean and had another son – Orm (Patrick Wilson) Atlantis was once the most advanced civilization on Earth, but, as we meet them in the movie, now it’s a struggling underwater kingdom ruled by power-hungry King Orm. King Orm’s goal is to conquer the remaining oceanic people and then the surface world. Only our hero, the rightful king and Orm’s brother Aquaman, stands in Orm’s way. With help from the royal counselor Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and Princess 13

Mera (Amber Heard), Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlantis and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep. Aquaman’s journey is no smooth sailing. At first, he refuses to accept what Mera tells him about his brother Orm and doesn’t want anything to do with Atlantis – for a good reason. On his journey he also comes across Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his team of pirates who raid anything on the ocean looking for treasure. Their first encounter causes Arthur to gain an enemy simply because he turned his back. After what the pirates did, I would have turned my back on them too! This scene creates a kick-ass story line leading up to the world’s stupidest fight. As if he could have really killed Aquaman. As the story continues, Mera and Arthur’s journey to find the Trident brings them face to face with the ugliest creatures I’ve ever seen in a movie. Guess what? They defeat the hideous beasts and Arthur gets the shock of his life. What did Arthur find out, and will he really become King of the Deep? Aquaman is now playing at UP’s Cineplex. A Dire Need For Sports Programs Entering 2019, Softball, Basketball and Volleyball associations in particular, didn’t have league competitions in 2018, following the passage of Hurricane Irma some 19 months ago. The effects of Irma on the development of sports in the territory while sportsman and sportswomen were inactive while our opponents elsewhere were in action, will be felt down the road. The future of sports always depends on youths. The focus on team sports in particular over the last several years, has been solely on league competitions. While times have changed and sports have been taken out of communities and centralized for well over 30 years now, the areas of grass roots sports development in some of our sports, is nonexistent. There are more opportunities in sports but less people capitalizing on those opportunities. My wish is to see more sports taking place in our communities as in past and it all starts with grassroots initiatives, particularly in team sports. There’s often a complaint about lack of facilities— but a facility is NOT a program. We’ve had the Multipurpose Sports Complex for going on 15 years now for example, but for the sports that use it, where are the youth programs? The leadership of our sports must take a critical assessment at how they’re leading sports. Any sports leader carrying the term “President” is responsible for overseeing the overall development of his/her sport, from grass roots programs to that of the naLimin’Times Entertainment Guide

tional team level. Unfortunately, the national team level has been the focus and not the other way around. Sadly, nurturing isn’t among our strong suits as evident by the lack of such youth development programs. Hurricane Irma has certainly showed the need for having programs—not leagues in place. Yes, we didn’t have lights or the amenities we’ve grown accustomed to over the years, but, didn’t we survive without them before? Again, the dire need for programs. One of the biggest drawbacks to youth development programs, is that when one’s playing career is over, many who have had opportunities to represent the country in regional and international competitions, they simply walk away without giving back to the sport that gave them the very opportunities they’ve had. In order for sports to survive, those of us who have benefitted must give of our time to our various sports—it’s the only way. Parents support is important and not just using sports as a baby sitting vehicle. Lots of athletes play and their parents and relatives haven’t seen them play. Support your own. In the process of developing our programs, the respect of starting time is important. Too many times players don’t show up on time ready to play, but instead, show up when it’s actually time to play or even later. That’s something we must work to change. 14
