Being in the Wrong Place Some people just have all the luck –or is it a knack for being in the right place at the right time? Recently I went snorkeling at the Caves with my son Brandon who was visiting from Florida for a week with a friend. I enjoyed watching the yellow tail and blue tangs as they swam near the rocks but after a while I tired and swam back to the boat while Brandon and Sophie carried on snorkeling. “We saw a turtle,” he exclaimed excitedly as they climbed back into the boat. “It was beautiful,” said an equally excited Sophie. I have been waiting to see a turtle while snorkeling for much of my life, and now it seems, I had missed a golden opportunity. But that disappointment paled in comparison to my next missed opportunity. A few days later, Brandon and Sophie spent the afternoon at Smugglers Cove. When they came home that evening, Brandon, with a glint in his eye, said: “You’re going to be jealous. I have just seen something you have always wanted to see.” This was a teaser of a line if I ever heard one. A moment later he whipped out his iPhone and played a video of what looked like brown leaves skittering down the beach towards the water. The leaves as it turned out were hawksbill turtle hatchlings and they appeared by the dozens, making a clumsy dash for the water and the promise of a life gliding through our gorgeous blue seas. Another of my missed turtle opportunities occurred several years earlier when I met members Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

from the Dept. of Conservation and Fisheries during one of their late night vigils to check for nesting turtles. No such luck. We walked up and down Josiah’s Bay with not a turtle in sight. I heard that they were spotted on the next night, though. The night I stayed home. I was in New York City a year or so ago where I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located in Central Park. Outside the museum, art venders hawk paintings and photographs to passing tourists. I looked at the stalls, but nothing caught my eye and I left empty handed. Well, recently Banksy a reclusive British street artist known for his graffiti wall murals sold a collection of small graffiti paintings at one of these Central Park booths for $60 each. People who bought them for the most part had no idea of what they were buying. Hopefully they figure it out soon, since some of them are worth thousands of dollars. This knack for being in the right place often happens to participants on the Antiques Road Show, who buy a dilapidated table at a yard sale and later discover that what they paid $15 for was actually a one-of-a-kind antique worth $50,000. The only $15 item I have ever bought at a yard sale is still worth $15. This, of course, is a defeatist attitude and being an optimist I am not going to give up looking for that once in a lifetime experience – or the object that will make me rich. I’m just going to have to look a little bit harder. 6

Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

I give too much in Relationships Ask Koren Dear Koren, I find myself giving too much in relationships too soon and I’m always getting hurt. I give my whole self and try to be a good girlfriend. They can’t complain because I do everything they want, yet guys always cheat on me or treat me badly. I have had 3 boyfriends in the last 2 years. I’m 26 and I’m ready to settle down but none of these guys are serious. How do I stop myself from getting hurt and choose someone who want an ongoing relationship? –Frustrated Dear Frustrated, Perhaps it’s time for a break from relationships with others and instead, to develop one with yourself. It sounds like you are eager to please and really want to have someone, but maybe these guys do not recognize your worth or maybe you are just selling yourself too short. People tend to treat us how we treat ourselves and if you come across as desperate or willing to settle for as, then that is how they will behave towards you. If on the other hand, they sense that you are a woman of class and worth and value, then they are way more likely to treat you like that. When you give too much too soon, you will develop expectations of receiving as much in return and when that does not happen, you will feel cheated. Here are some ideas to consider Love and respect yourself. Don’t wait for someone else to make you feel good about yourself. Treat yourself with kindness and care. Recognize your specialness and do not disrespect

yourself by accepting less than you deserve. Set boundaries. When you recognize that you are being treated badly, you are the only one asking to meet or you are going overboard with the giving, just step back and either verbally or by your actions say, “enough is enough.” Manage your expectations. Just because you are a big giver, does not mean that the other person will give as much. No one is obligated to make your happiness a priority, except you. Sometimes by over-giving, you rob the other person of the opportunity of meeting you halfway. If you are doing all the work in the relationship, there is nothing left for them to do and some men like a challenge, they want to feel like they are wining you over. When you are always making yourself available 24/7, they wonder if you have a life and instead of gravitating towards you, they are likely to pull away because you are inadvertently asking more of them than they can comfortably give. Being needy and clingy is not attractive. That does not mean that you should put yourself out to be elusive, but rather, love yourself, know your worth and pace yourself in the relationship. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

SPOTLIGHT

This Week’s Celebrity Story by By Jan Critchley

Taraji P. Hensen, Celebrety Guest Summer Sizzle Once again Taraji Henson, famed for her role as Cookie on the megahit television series Empire will be making a special guest appearance in the BVI at this July’s Summer Sizzle. She is a startling presence on both television and real life. A film and TV actress and singer, Taraji P Henson was born in Washington, DC in 1970. She is known for her roles in films such as Baby Boy, Hustle & Flow and for her role of “Queenie” in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, parts of which were filmed in St. John in the US Virgin Islands and for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. From 2011 she turned her attention to television and co-starred as Detective Jocelyn Carter in the CBS drama Person of Interest, before landing her role in the hit Fox musical drama series, Empire. Empire is a TV phenomenon, and similar to a modern day King Lear, only it’s the sons that are put through a series of tests rather than the daughters as in the Shakespearian classic. It is a unique family drama set in the world of a hip hop and R&B record label headed by music mogul, Lucious Lyon (Terrance Howard) who is looking at his three sons to find an heir to his business. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Jussie Smollet, plays the middle son, Jamal, a talented and gay singer/songwriter and the natural choice to take over the business. However it is Cookie Lyon, played by Taraji P. Henson that steals the show as Lucious’s ex-wife. She has just completed a 17-year prison sentence and the small firm she invested in initially has now grown into an empire beyond anything she could have dreamt of – and she’s back and wants a slice of the action. Right from the beginning, Empire elevated Taraji’s on-screen character, Cookie to iconic status and she quickly emerged as a fan favorite for her cutting remarks, sashaying confidence and a penchant for animal print fashions and fedora hats. She is especially renowned for her putdowns, or “bon mots” which delight the viewers with smart phones in hand, tweets at the ready – pushing the show to even greater heights. Seems the network has found the perfect formula and Empire has become an ongoing hit show, breaking viewership records with last March’s season finale, pulling in more than 17 million viewers. Taraji’s newest project is Hidden Figures. The drama about a team of African-American women who provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions will also star Kevin Costner and Kirsten Dunst. The film is due out in 2017. Fans will look forward to seeing this new and very different role for Cookie. 12

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 For die-hard fans of the first “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” – a surprise hit of the 2002 film year, the lovable antics of the Greek Portokalos family are here to bring the laughs on once again. However, for those who have seen the first one, with many of the characters and their foibles still fresh in mind, the jokes are more like a balloon losing its air than actually popping. I mean have you ever laughed as hard a second time at a joke you have already heard? With that in mind there is still a big dysfunctional Greek family totally involved in each other’s business, who display a kissy-in-yourface-kinda-love that is hard not to smile at. Now 18 years later, Toula (Nia Vardalos) from a very close-knot Greek clan in Chicago and Ian (John Corbett) her waspy counterpart, have their own teen daughter, Paris to wring their hands over. No Paris is not into drugs, tattoos or sex, she merely is considering going to college in New York, away from her family verses going to a local college. Although Toula fought her own independence battles in the first film, to marry outside the Greek clan, she is a classic “Helicopter mom” even volunteering in school positions to be close to Paris. The thought of her only child going away to college sends her in a tailspin. Her father, the Greek Patriarch of the family Gus (Michael Constantine) is more concerned that Paris marries a Greek boy, not wanting to see the family ethnicity be dissolved in American culture – alLimin’Times Entertainment Gude

though he enjoys the benefits life in America has brought him, including a comfortable suburban life supported by the family Greek restaurant. The same side characters are there, zany aunts and uncles, the “I’ll beat him up if anyone takes you on, “ brother, who add interesting comedy setups and humor. The storyline however is predictable and many of the jokes fall flat. But the Portokalos family is such an entity in themselves, one is carried along on the rip tide. So is the second wedding about Paris? Of course not – she is college bound. Gus and his wife Maria (Lainie Kazan) discover that the priest who married them never signed the marriage certificate making it invalid. So they decide to remarry, but this time Maria wants – yes, a big Greek wedding. What better than a family wedding to bring out the stereotypes and humor. Although the foibles surrounding the planning and presentation of this wedding are definitely laugh-worthy, you may not leave with an Opa! but definitely a smile. 13

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Gertrude Thomas grabs a rebound Over the course of the BVI Basketball Federation’s 42-year history, there has always been varying degrees of interest in Women’s Basketball, but it never took off. This time around, the environment is ripe for the development of this sport in the territory. Since there was no girl’s basketball program in place at schools, as in boy’s sports, attempts by the BVI Basketball Federation to get a women’s league off the ground sputtered in the early 90’s. The federation came into being in 1974. Nowadays however, with more women interested and playing the game at the Primary and High School levels and after fielding a women’s team in the CBC Championships for the first time in his history a year ago, a women’s league is underway with three teams. A glance as the team rosters will reveal that they consist of past, current and future players, ranging in age from their teens to 52 and include two referees—one of whom is playing on a team with her daughter. And, they are working in the trenches, playing aggressively, scrambling for loose balls, fighting for rebounds, shooting the outside shot and of course, working hard “in the paint.” Of course, there’s the trash talking too, just as the guys. On Saturday, the Bulldogs used 13 points from Captain Khadejah Anthony and 10 from Dominique Wattley to claw the Eagles, 55-27, for their second victory of the season after holding off the Rams, 47-38 in their opener. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

14

As the coach would say, It was our game to win and we had to take advantage,” Bulldogs small forward, Anthony said. “We made a few mistakes here and there but we came out playing like a team and that’s what he likes to see. I’m happy with that if he’s happy with that.” At 52, referee Gertrude Thomas is the league’s oldest player on the Eagles team with her daughter Joi-Ann Thomas and said “It’s an opportunity to ‘live basketball all over again.” “Playing with the young girls, I’m just there to give them a little guidance,” said Thomas, who had team high of nine points with Tiffhany Jennings and also pulled 12 rebounds. “It’s rewarding having my daughter playing along side me now. I can only teach her what I know. Being on the court with all the other girls is a teaching opportunity as I go along. The Bulldogs has the better core of players in the whole league.” Anthony described getting the opportunity to play as ‘amazing.’ “I’m glad we have the three teams that came out,” she said, her voice tingling with excitement. “I love the sport and I know we all love the sport and we’re just out here having fun.” Thomas recalled playing in the league in the early 90s. “Seeing it renewed after 21-22 years, is something nice to see,” she said. Anthony boldly predicted that the championship is theirs. “We’re the Bulldogs,” she said. “We ain’t timid.”
