50 Shades Freed Before I even begin to write this review, I must mention that I’ve never read the books and only got drawn to the first movie because of the hype that surrounded it, so there will be no boring book versus movie comparisons here. I’m glad I did see that first one, though, because two sequels after I’m still watching. Sometimes it’s hard to come up with good sequels to the first movies and each one end up being a hit. Despite some critics giving bad reviews, to me the three 50 Shades films were good watches. This final installment, 50 Shades Freed, opens with the wedding of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). If you can recall at the end of the first film Anastasia, or Ana for short, walked our of Christian’s life and then, in 50 Shades Darker, his goal was to get her back. It seems he had the magic touch because in 50 Shades Freed they are Mr and Mrs Grey. Once the couple returns from their elaborate honeymoon, sinister events come to light and jeopardize their “happily ever after” before it can really even get going. Ana returns to work to find that she has received a promotion and a fancy new office. Some would say it’s the perk of being Mrs Grey, but if you recall form the first film, Ana has been working hard to achieve her professional goals. As the Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

newly minted wife of a billionaire, she also gets a dedicated security officer and driver Sawyer (Brent Daugherty) who is posted outside her office door. After Christian and Ana meet with Gia (Arielle Kebbel), the architect for their new home, on their way back into the city they discover they are being followed. Their security team hops on the job of trying to figure out who it could be. At one point in the film Christian leaves for a business trip and Ana opts to stay behind work at the office. Instead of going straight home one evening, she went out after work, which gives an intruder the opportunity to get into the house. The intruder is no other than her bitter ex-coworker Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson). Jack told the police that he was following the Grey’s trying to get his old life back as they would not return calls or emails so his last option was trying to meet them face to face. Besides outside interference from the likes of Jack, the couple also has to untangle their own internal turmoil. It seems like the word baby scared Christian. What’s ex-coworker Jack’s real motivation; what it is about a baby that scares Christian; and can the couple survive these events? 50 Shades Freed can now be streamed on iTunes and will be released on DVD May 8th. 4

Black & White Thang Reloaded The Black & White Thang was born in Tortola on May 2008 and has had tremendous success over the years, becoming one of the most talked about themed events in the territory, especially among the BVIslanders who look forward to the event each year. This signature event, conceptualized by Fabian Graneau of Wings Productions, welcomes all fun-loving party-goers to express themselves in an atmosphere which has been spiced up by the theme — everyone wears black and white outfits — and the entertainment. Over the years, similar events have popped up in neighboring Caribbean islands such as Dominica, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados and, farther afield, in Miami. The event is a sophisticated semi–formal affair, which also sets it apart from the conventional and casual events filled with colors that are held during the year. “The event has created many memorable moments and it is our intention as the event grows big-

Get Your Gratitude I was having one of those mornings. You know the ones: it was raining, the roads were covered in rocks, puddles were hiding the new potholes, and to top it off I got stuck behind a trailer truck blocking both directions of traffic because its wheels had lost traction as he was trying to back into a driveway. Then I remembered that not so long ago, it would have taken all day to get from where I live in Josiah’s Bay to Frenchman’s Cay and back because Irma mashed up so many of our roads. And not so long before that, I would have been making the trek via bus or several thumbed rides because I didn’t have a car. And then I remembered that I’m fit and well enough that even if there were no charitable drivers to be found, I could always walk, an option not everyone has. In other words, I remembered how fortunate I am to have problems like an inconvenient commute. Suddenly I was giving thanks for the same thing that was annoying me just a minute beforehand. Getting in a grateful headspace is an instant mood lifter for me, but did you know there’s a lot of science showing that gratitude is good for you? There’s the Northeastern University study that found a link between gratitude and more patience and better decision-making. One Swiss study Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

found that people who were more grateful also took better care of their health. A UK study showed a link between more gratitude and more sleep. Yet another study on people with chronic illness found that those who kept a daily gratitude journal experienced fewer painful symptoms than their counterparts who didn’t journal. Then there was the study that found grateful people also have better self esteem than those that aren’t as grateful. There have also been several studies that show that the more you count your blessings, the happier and less depressed you feel. So grateful people feel better and happier, which is pretty great, but in all this research I saw another theme emerge: gratitude actually makes you a better person! In one study of people in Germany and the US, those who said they “regularly and often” experienced gratitude were also more likely to do “pro-social behavior,” social scientists way of talking about good deeds. Another study, this one in Kentucky, found that grateful people are kinder to others, even when faced with unkind treatment themselves. All these PhDs seem to agree that the best way to get more grateful is to practice gratitude daily with something like a gratitude journal. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m going to start mine tonight! 6

Against All Odds Chapter 3: Rock Bottom

Sigh! I can’t believe this is how my life turned out. It was going great; I thought I was going to get my big break. I should’ve known I’m not that lucky, only persons who are born to parents in this industry get easy success. It’s about three and a half years since I lost the competition but I also found someone. Let me tell you about Lisa: she’s a saint. The things she has done, and taught me about life, she makes me want to be a good person. Seriously, this woman has a heart only God himself could’ve made. I met Lisa three years ago after I started working at the delivery service. Whenever I had to drop packages off to her firm she was always kind to me. When I realized I felt a strong attraction to her, I tried to keep our interactions limited because I wanted to stay focused on my music — besides, what would a woman like her want with a delivery guy who does music on the side? When I began to shun her she thought I must hate her, but I was only trying my best not to fall for her. Needless to say, I got over that. We got together, she became my muse. Lisa inspired me. I was writing a new piece every week and loved playing them at my restaurant gig. She attended my performances whenever she could, and she always supported me at home. Knowing that someone believed in me and my dream gave me the strength I needed to keep pressing. When I was stuck or frustrated, she would con me into taking breaks and relaxing my mind. When my mind was a storm, this woman was my peace. Then I went and messed it up. 11

I’ve had about four different jobs in the last couple years and at one point I was homeless. I was sleeping on couches of the few friends I still had, bouncing around here and there for a couple days at a time. I had landed a new gig because of one of my homeboys put in a good word for me, but I knew he was tired of my ass staying at his place. I managed to hide it for a while, which only made it worse when Lisa found out. I swore she was going to leave me for being homeless and for the way my depression led me to neglect her. Lisa still sees me, but at this point we barely operate like a couple. I like to think she is giving me space to handle my business, but I’m afraid she might realize she could do better. My dreams are temporarily on hold. After so many shut doors and no real progress, I give up. But I’m still not going back home. In the last few years I’ve haven’t talked to my dad and only occasionally talked to my mom. I guess she had enough of trying because she’s stopped asking me to come home, and our conversations are always brief. Sometimes I wonder what life would be like living off my parents’ money. Would I be happy then? Probably not! …………………………………………………………………................. Erickson, The Comeback Kid Over the weekend, a heartwarming story of determination and drive ended in triumph for Deya Erickson. After severely injuring her knee days before her final Carifta Games in 2016, followed by surgery six months later, and missing the entire 2017 season, Erickson was told she might never be able to run again. On Saturday evening in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Turabo University sophomore Erickson won the Liga Atletica Interuniversitaria Justas 100m hurdles, becoming the territory’s first athlete to claim a title in the championships. Erickson, who had the second fastest time of 14.31 seconds in her heat in the semis, fended off UPR Humacao’s Erika Serrano in a photo finish, winning by .009 seconds as both ran 14.13 seconds. “Winning the Justas makes me feel proud of myself,” an elated Erickson said. “I doubted myself before the race and felt I should settle for second, because coming into the race, I had the second fastest seed time. So I had a little doubt but, at the Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

same time, I felt that maybe if I push, maybe if I fought, I could win it.” Erickson added: “Winning after this injury, after I was told I would never be able to run the hurdles again, and here I am today. I know that my future is bright and I will continue to work hard because it doesn’t stop here.” With nine months off, in the summer of 2017, she began doing basic dynamic movements to strengthen her hips and elsewhere, before starting to run in October after Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Those were the first steps to her victory. “So far, this has been the biggest challenge of my life,” the 21-year old said. “The first part of training was painful and just getting sharp and getting back to where I was and even better, it was stressful. I also had to work on building my confidence back to compete again.” Erickson said it’s a good feeling becoming the first BVI athlete to claim a Justas title. “It goes to show it doesn’t make a difference if you go to the USA or Puerto Rico,” she said. “What makes the difference is getting an education and being able to do what you love. What makes it even better is standing out as a BVI athlete no matter where we go.” Erickson said she has learnt to be patient and have faith. “It’s when you have faith, you know that something great will come out of your hard work,” she said. “When you know you have the privilege and God gave you the gift and you have talent you can do something great with it.” 14
