Tails & Tapas

Join the BVI Humane Society on Saturday from 6-11pm at Surfsong on Beef Island for Tails & Tapas, a swanky art exhibit and auction where animal lovers can show their support by bidding on animal-themed work from local and international artists. Proceeds will benefit the recovery and growth of the BVI Humane Society which was hit hard by last year’s storms. Seventeen items will be on display and for sale that evening, and the art encompasses pieces ranging from a charming 9-by-12-inch watercolor portrait of your pet by 14-year-old Charlie Thomajan, to a photograph of the quintes-

sential island rooster by Amanda Baker, to a carved hardwood chair by Scott Hustins, all the way to a 6-foot-by-8-foot bamboo room divider depicting an underwater scene by muralist Wendy Westcott. BVI art aficionados will recognize the names of many artists whose work will appear in the event. Craving a piece by famed fireball sculptor Aragorn Dick-Read? At Tails and Tapas, you can bid on a copper wall relief topping 6 feet high that depicts a sea almond tree teeming with birds and lizards. Or maybe you’d like a piece by Joseph Hodge, who has painted many of the BVI’s most well-known landmarks and historic sites. His latex on canvas Irma and the Birds will also be available. While attendees enjoy viewing the art, they will also be welcomed with music by Oren Hodge, plus wine tasting by TICO, Tapas by Surfsong’s chef Louize, and a cash bar all evening with specialty drinks. Additional music will be provided by DJ Gotmilk. Dress code is artistically elegant and tickets are $125. Get yours from the BVI Humane Society or either TICO location. A complimentary shuttle will be provided to and from the Surfsong Estate. For more information please call 494-9008 or email artforanimalsBVI@gmail.com

Practical Fashion Fashion usually focuses on style, taste and creativity as opposed to boring practical concerns, but I find that living on an island forces me to consider a host of unique matters when it comes to choosing my clothing and accessories. They may not be appearing on the catwalk or in a Vogue magazine fashion spread any time soon, but they serve me well and (I hope!) don’t look terrible. Here are my island fashion must-haves 1. Walking shoes: No matter how fabulous they are, you will probably never see me working some strappy stiletto heels, because I really need to be able to walk. Maybe it’s my years of being carless or the knowledge that any day might see me stuck standing in a long, slow line, but comfy, usually flat shoes are my number one fashion accessory. 2. Shades: It’s way too sunny most days to leave the house without shades and still be comfortable. Since I am on the clumsy side and I have a grabby little one, I tend to go for sturdy and inexpensive frames. I picked up the pair I’m wearing today at a $1 store during my last trip to the states.

3. A big bag: I love those tiny clutches or palm-sized pocketbooks suspended on a fine chain that I see so many women rocking, but I just can’t do it. My bag needs to hold sunscreen, water, a notebook, some pens, a snack and maybe a camera, and I need to be able to actually wear it on a shoulder rather than carry it in my hand. This means that I often carry a backpack rather than a purse, but I’m happy to report that my current one, with its slick fabric and cute silvertone tag, is a big step up, stylewise, from the sweaty canvas pack I used to carry around town. 4. Lightweight cardigan: I’ve accepted that I’ll never solve the mystery of why we like to have our air conditioners cranked to mid-Atlantic winter temperatures in so many buildings, but rather than shivering the whole time I’m in one of these places, I just toss a cardigan in my bag (since there’s so much room in there). 5. Cute umbrella: It might be polka dot or bright purple but I love to have my umbrella with me in any weather. Is the sun shining? It’s my parasol or portable shade. Drizzley or pouring down rain? I’m sitting pretty under my one-woman shelter.

Fist Fight Make fun if you must, but I am an Ice Cube fan. I know he’s not the most convincing actor that ever worked, but why should that matter when the man makes enjoyable films? Fist Fight won’t generate years worth of quoted lines and follow-up movies the way Friday did, but it will give you a few good giggles, especially if you’ve ever worked in a school. At first, high school history teacher Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) seems like your run-of-themill intimidating teacher. You know, the ones that use fear and intimidation to get their students to behave? In short order, however, a student prank involving an outdated classroom television and a covertly used smartphone turn Strickland from regular scary – teacher voice, those eyes – into full-blown scary. Nobody gets injured (it’s not that kind of movie) but there is an axe involved and all the kids flee the scene screaming. Naturally, Strickland and Andy Campbell (Charlie Day), the only other teacher to witness the incident, are brought to a meeting with school administration. Being somewhat reasonable leaders, they know this display was beyond the pale and decide to fire Strickland. Campbell, who is expecting his wife to deliver their second child at any moment, is relieved to keep his job. The relief quickly turns 11

to sweaty terror, however, when Strickland says that Campbell is to blame for his firing. Strickland challenges Campbell to a fight after school. It doesn’t quite follow logically, but just go with it: Campbell does guilty that Strickland is losing his job. He decides that in order to avoid what will most certainly be an ugly and embarrassing beatdown, he has to do whatever it takes to get administration to change their minds and re-instate Strickland. Here’s where things get super silly: Campbell decides that the best way to do that is to get the student who played the prank to ‘fess up to instigating Strickland’s classroom rage-a-thon. The farce that follows includes Campbell bribing the kid with an expensive laptop, getting caught buying the laptop when he is supposed to be in school by his wife and young daughter, procuring drugs to plant on Strickland to get him arrested so he won’t be at school for the appointed time for the fight, Strickland and Campbell making peace and calling the fight off, and then Campbell inadvertently offending Strickland’s pride and the fight being back on again. If you’re thinking it can’t get any wilder from there, you’d be wrong. While the filmmakers made some inexplicable choices in the middle, the fight itself is epic (and goes on against the backdrop of Campbell’s wife going into labor, naturally). The end of the movie has a hilarious payoff that makes this silly movie worth the watch. Fist Fight is available on iTunes. Vol. 30, 8/ May 31 - Jun 6, 2018

Lights, Camara, Action Chapter 1: I Got It All

Actress: noun; a woman who behaves in a way that is not genuine. “I became such a good actress that even I believe in me.” “Goodbye girl, see you when you get back!” I shouted to my neighbor Jazz as she pulled off. “That miserable itch,” I grumble to myself. This would be the best two weeks of my life without her all in my business. Don’t get me wrong, Jazz is an okay person, but the little success she’s found recently has her thinking too highly of herself lately. Plus, while she always has something to say about my life, lately she’s been very secretive about her own personal affairs. I’ve tried not to spill too much of my business because she gossips, but I do still love her company. We’ve been neighbors for the last four years, but we came from similar backgrounds, so it feels like I’ve known her my whole life. I went back in my house and headed straight to the bathroom, bent over the toilet and let it out. I cleaned up myself and went into my walk-in closet to give myself one last look over before I head out the door. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

At the office, I keep my stride long and show my most professional smile as various staffers chirp, “Good morning Ms. Frederic.” If these people knew what’s under this sure walk and smooth smile, I’m sure they would look at me differently. I’ve never let them see me weak, and I never will. “I have your notes for your 10am and some fresh coffee,” my young assistant says. “Anything else you need just buzz me and let me know.” “Aaliyah, how many times am I going to have to tell you to call me Bella,” I reply, taking the notes and mug. “I think we’ve establish a good enough working relationship to address each other by our first names, don’t you?” Aaliyah and I have been having this conversation for most of the year she has spent as my personal assistant. She is also studying to be an architect with a minor in interior design, the same academic path I took before coming to the firm. I see so much potential in her, I hope she gets everything her little heart desires in life and she’s genuinely happy. There was a soft knock at the door, causing me to look up. “Your 10am is here Ms. F– Bella. I’ve already put him in the conference room and made him comfortable.” “Thanks Aaliyah,” I smiled at her effort. Then I got up and gathered my notes. It was time to put on a show. 12

Making Her Mark At the rate she’s going, Adaejah Hodge will need a much bigger case to display her track and field awards. Since moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2015, Hodge has been making her mark. Over the Memorial Day weekend at the 3rd Atlanta Georgia Relays in Douglasville, she felt right at home when she was joined by seven other BVIbased athletes in the competition. Hodge, a former Althea Scatliffe Strider, accounted for five of the six medals won, with three individual victories and two meet records in the 11-12 Girls Division. Hodge stormed to the 400m finish line at 57.80 seconds for a personal best, shattering the previous mark of 1:01.17 established in 2017. She ran 26.46 seconds in the 200 meter to smash the 27.07 meet record and won the Long Jump with a leap of 4.68 meters (15’4¼”). On the second leg, Hodge moved up a division, competing with 13-14 Girls, Akeela McMaster, Amia Todman and Abriel Magloire, to grab 4x100m Relay silver in 50.66 seconds. She then returned and anchored them to victory on the 4 x 200m sprint relay, with a time of 1 minute 48.48 seconds. “It was an awesome feeling because I got to run with my old teammates again,” Hodge reflected after the meet. “I just want to say a big thanks to Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

the BVI coaches and parents for giving me the opportunity to reunite with my friends. It was an awesome weekend.” In winning the 4 x 200m Relay, they avenged a loss to Jamaica’s Wolmer’s School in the 4 x 100m. “It meant everything to me because they beat us in the 4 x 100 and we regrouped, came back as a team, and gave it our all,” she noted. “So it made my job a little bit easier on the anchor, because we did what was supposed to be done.” Hodge, who competes for Mason Creek Middle School, has been turning heads all year. The multiple event athlete competes in the 100, 200 and 400m, as well as the Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump. At the Georgia Middle School Championships, she placed third in the 100m in 12.68 seconds and fourth in the 200m in 25.88, exceeding her goal of running 26.00. She broke 60 seconds for the first time earlier in the season. Unlike her sprint-focused BVI based counterparts, Hodge’s versatility has seen her jumping over 1.37m (4’6”) in the High Jump and 10.09m (33’1½”) in the Triple Jump. Running a career best 57.80 seconds over 400m came as a definite surprise, Hodge said. “I was aiming within the 58 seconds range and by surprise, ran 57.80,” she said. “It was a surprise for my coaches too. The 400 is now my favorite event because it gives me more time to strategize and I can show my coaches how strong I’m becoming. It also helps my time in the 200m.” Hodge is one to keep an eye on. 14

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “subgris’ that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or colum within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.
