Festival’s Visiting Stars Musical acts from near and far will descend on the BVI in the coming weeks to help celebrate the territory’s annual Emancipation Festival. The next 10 days will be jam-packed with performances by local and international acts taking the celebrations from Road Town to East End to Carrot Bay and back to town again. If you’ve been waiting for the artists that only come around every few years, International Music Mix night on Friday, Aug. 4 is when the action begins with the reggae stars Pressure Busspipe out of the USVI and Jamaican-American Tarrus Riley. Saturday the 5th is International Soca Night and will feature performances by Rock City, “Tipsy” artist Rupee, Tizzy, and “Single” artist Orlando Octave. Then Sunday sees a new addition to the festival line-up: Latin night. The evening will feature performances by Dominican Republic artists like Musicologo El Libro, DJ Grim, salseros Capicua Clan, and Mangee Audio. On Tuesday the 8th, the party moves to East End where “Rock and Come In” artist Linky First and dancehall “Singjay” Dexta Daps out of

Jamaica, plus Trinidad’s soca power couple Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons will all be sure to keep the party going until morning. On Wednesday, take your umbrella to the village because “Queen of Bacchanal” Destra is taking the stage, and the songstress has a habit of bringing showers to all her BVI performances. Carrot Bay hosts the next round beginning on Thursday the 10th with Hatian Kompa group T-Vice and Dominica’s favorite soca band Tripple Kay. On Friday, catch “Watch Thing” performer Skinny Fabulous, “Big Girl Now” singer Patrice Roberts, dancehall star Bounty Killer, and “Strongest Soldier” Jahmiel. Organizers haven’t shared who their surprise “last lap” international act will be when the action moves back to the Road Town village on Saturday the 12th, but if you want to find out who the Road March and other Festival winners are in person, be sure to be in the village that evening to see them receive their prizes. Check out our Festival Schedule on page 11 for more details on the Emancipation Festival schedule.

Xtreme Band “Gal you look good but will look way better with a band man.” Xtreme Band has been working non-stop and they’re nowhere near ready to slow down. Dirk “Dirky” Walters, the band’s founder, musical director and main producer/engineer, says he relies on his band mates, including rhythm programmer Tony Smith; bassist Darryl “Relo” Blyden; vocalists Jamori “Jay Jayy” Blaize and Vincent “VW” Williams; keyboardist Junie “Bandura” Huggins; and guitarist Craig “Mitchie” Browne. When the stage lights go out, they are a group of down-to-earth guys who like to have fun, crack jokes and drink some rum. As often as they can the band meets to check up on each other. They would also share ideas and thoughts about what they can do to improve their music and themselves. “As a unit it’s always great constantly learning from each other and having different personalities in the mix,” Dirky said. Xtreme Band has accomplished a lot over the years including releasing songs locally, regionally and internationally. They’ve won Road March titles and performed from Trinidad and Tobago to Miami and elsewhere. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
The band has been privileged to collaborate and perform with artists such as Onyan of Burning Flames, Jamesy P, Denise Belfon, Michelle Sylvester, The Baron, Winston Soso, Peter Ram, Duane Stephenson, and many more. Xtreme’s last single Don’t Look Back was written and produced by Dirky, and it talks about issues pertaining to our culture in the terms of Festival. The track focuses on the lack of acknowledgement and respect for persons that have contributed towards the BVI’s culture through making music. It’s also a fun track encouraging listeners to party and have fun. Fans and supporters can find the band in the Festival Village, August Monday Parade and at various events throughout the territory this summer, as the band plays for parties, bars and private events. You can also catch the band at Wete Fete Pool Party at Bouncer & Ramon Bar on Wednesday, 9th. Xtreme Band can be found on Facebook @ Xtreme Band. Listen to their music on Soundcloud where they’re Big Bad Duty Xtreme. Prefer to purchase rather than stream their music? Get their full-length 2014 album from cdbaby.com. 12
Evil Neighbor Dear Koren, I believe that there is a spirit of darkness next to me and it is affecting my daughter. My daughter was always well behaved and bright in her schoolwork. From last year when this neighbor moved in, I don’t feel right about her. From her comments, it seems that she is jealous: She has daughter the same age as mine and her children give her a lot of trouble. Now my daughter is behaving strangely, staring into space and talking to herself and always in her room. I have seen a black candle on the neighbor’s window ledge, and this lady doesn’t seem to work anywhere but still pays rent and takes care of three children. What can I do besides praying to protect my child from this evil presence? –Concerned mother Dear Concerned mother, Stay rooted in your faith and don’t ever allow yourself to succumb to fear of any evil presence. If this woman were so powerful, wouldn’t she be able to control her children or help them to do well in school? Clearly, she does not have as much power as you attribute to her. Maybe she is jealous or wishes her daughter was as bright as yours and that’s okay. As for the candle, I don’t know what that means but I do know that a candle is an inanimate object with no power in and of itself. The neighbor’s children’s behavior and source of funds is her concern, not yours. You have enough on your plate to focus on, like the emotional and mental wellbeing of your own child, which is my major concern right now. Her strange behavior, talking to herself and staring into space sounds like she needs to be evalu-
ated. I suggest you take her to a medical doctor or mental health professional to ascertain what is going on. In the meanwhile, continue to observe her. Look at her sleeping habits, look for changes in her eating patterns, what she is reading, watching on TV, and who she interacts with often. Did her behavior only change when the neighbors got there, or was it going on before? You should also find out if there is any history of any strange behavior in your family or that of her father. Could she have been exposed to any drugs? Many of us in the Caribbean have been raised hearing about obeah and we perceive it to be a real threat and I don’t want to minimize your concerns. However, you need to recognize that no powers of evil can overcome you once you place yourself in the hands of a more powerful being. I also want you to focus on what you have control over and the child that is within your care. There will always be persons who do not live in accordance with your beliefs and you can’t fight them all, but you can keep doing your best for yourself and your family. 13

Keeping the Premier’s Cup Home There hasn’t been much horse racing in the territory this year since the demise of The Boys and L&B Racing Stables respectively. In fact, there was just one race held. But on Tuesday, in the biggest race on the territory’s annual calendar for the $20,000 Premier’s Cup, there’s bound to be excitement over the question of whether this will be the year that a BVI horse takes the territory’s biggest prize, which has sailed off to either St. Thomas or St. Croix over the last six years. Trevelyn was the last BVI horse to win the coveted prize in 2010. Last year, St. Croix’s St. Moose cemented his legacy by becoming the only repeat champion in the nine-year history of the Premier’s Cup. Unfortunately, a death in his owner’s family, will prevent him from seeking a 3-peat and by extension, seeking to extend the U.S. Virgin Islands’ dominance for a seventh straight year. With St. Moose out, the day’s fifth race will find St. Thomas’ Totally Evil, debutant Flying to Honor and Giant Valley, lining up in the gate for the Premier’s Cup, a 1-1/8 mile race for Class A horses. Lesmore Smith of Top Priority Racing Stables says this is his year. In fact, the affable horse owner has gone as far as predicting Giant Valley, last year’s St. Thomas Carnival Governor’s Cup champ, Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
will take them down. “I haven’t yet won a Premier’s Cup, and I think this is my year for winning a Premier’s Cup,” he told me. “I’m sorry to know James ‘Bubba’ Bates won’t be there in the race. My sympathy goes out to him, but I think who’s there, it will be a walk in the park this time.” So what gives Smith such confidence? “Because I know the ability of the horse,” Smith says in a matter-of-fact tone. “As I look back and see that twice in St. Thomas, I ran second to [Totally Evil] running from 15 lengths back. He’s not going to be that far this time. I’m going to be within striking distance, so I’m gonna be able to go past him this time.” The U.S. Virgin Islands’ horses domination over the last six years doesn’t daunt Smith. “Congratulations to them, but you remember God does everything in seven and this is the seventh year and it will stay home,” Smith said, adding that Giant Valley will certainly add a Premier’s Cup to his trophy case. “He will. He will without a shadow of a doubt. I guarantee you, and I’m looking to beat them by five or six lengths going away leave them.” Will Smith’s prediction pan out? Find out at Tuesday’s race, which is scheduled to go off around 4:45 p.m. at the Ellis Thomas Downs. 14
