BVI Theatre Series Crave the feeling of live stage performances in the style of Broadway or London’s West End? Good news: the BVI Theatre Series, which launched back in 2013, is back and better than ever. This season, filled with a usual variety of drama, music, and productions that range from classic to cutting edge, kicks off this Saturday with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof from 7–10pm. (Film buffs will remember the 1957 Hollywood adaptation, which starred Elizabeth Taylor.) The play is about a steamy night in Mississippi, when a Southern family gathers at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell. Brick and Maggie dance around the secrets and sexual tension that threaten to destroy their marriage. With the family’s future at stake, viewers are left to decide which version of the truth is real – and kept on the edge of their seats waiting to see which version will win out on stage. In 2017, the series set up a non-profit organization to run the series independently, and to promote

an appreciation of the performing arts and support education initiatives in the BVI. They partnered with H Lavity Stoutt Community College, many local businesses, and worked with organizations such as Byexperience and National Theatre Live to broadcast high quality films of theatre productions from London and other stages to screens here in the BVI. Please note that this production has adult content, and is recommended for audiences age 15 and older. Later in the season, catch other shows including Follies, Young Marx, Allelujah!, King Lear, and I’m Not Running. All performances will be screened at the HLSCC Auditorium and tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $10 for students and HLSCC staff. Get your tickets at House, Island Roots or Lady Sarah’s. If you want to get involved as a volunteer, or simply keep track of the shows, you can send them a message on their Facebook page @BVITheatreSeries.

Before I had my little one, I had visions of how lovely it would be for him to grow up here on island, especially when it comes to having access to nature. I love to walk, hike, swim, or just float; and I pictured the little one tagging along on all these activities. I even hoped -- ok still hope! -- that as he grows up we’d even learn some new outdoorsy skills together. I’m not sure if he managed to absorb these daydreams in utero, but this kid really loves to be outside. I’ve been loving the calm seas we’ve had for most of this summer in part because it’s meant plenty of time in the water for us both. For now, the baby normally sits in a floating seat, but it’s easily enough to keep him entertained. He splashes us both for stretches far longer than I usually expect from a single activity given his miniature attention span. He’s just as rapt by the outdoors on land. Let’s just say, for example, that I’m carrying him from a building to a vehicle. If there’s a tree or bush nearby, he must reach out a chubby little hand to try to touch it. If I then run into someone I know, he will squirm Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

to be put down and out both hands go in search of leaves and rocks to inspect and feel. Maybe you’ve seen viral videos of kids who hate the feel of grass on their skin. When my kid gets near grass that’s even sort of green, he strokes it like it’s a favorite pet. He also really likes animals. He will watch dogs, cats, and larger lizards as though they are putting on a show for him. Probably because they make noise, he especially loves birds. After a while, he will babble at the animals in a friendly way, like he is conversing with them. My favorite is when he extends a hand and holds it out toward the animal. Does he think he can Jedi Mind Trick animals into coming closer to him? I laugh every time. His special favorite creatures at the moment, to my embarrassment, are chickens. He doesn’t understand that feral chickens are pests that only tourists find endearing. To him, they are exciting friends to shriek at and to follow around. I’m very curious what he plans to do if he should ever get close to one, but my guess is the chicken would get the classic baby pat-pat move that our cat at home has become very accustomed to.

It’s a movie that looks like a comic book with the storyline (and tons of great visual and sound jokes) of a video game. In other words, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is total geekfest. Michael Cera wasn’t a movie star when this one hit theaters back in 2010, but it showed his understated humor could carry a movie. Cera plays Scott Pilgrim, a 23-year-old couchsurfing bassist. As the movie opens, Scott is trying (unsuccessfully) to justify to his friends and bandmates why it’s a good idea to date 17-year-old Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). Then he meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a new-in-town Amazon delivery woman and the literal girl of his dreams. Scott begins to neglect Knives, but doesn’t break up with her; to pursue Ramona. He may be the hero of the movie, but Scott Pilgrim is not a very good guy. After a strange sort-of first date, Scott convinces Ramona to come see his band play in a battle of the bands. The show is all kinds of awkward, first with Knives meeting Ramona and then with Scott having to battle - remember when I said the storyline was like a video game? - Ramona’s ex-boyfriend Matthew Patel. Matthew explains that he is just the first of Ramona’s 11
evil exes, and that if Scott wants to date her, he will have to defeat all seven of them. The faces of Scott’s friends as he wallops Matthew are priceless. Turns out Scott is a decent fighter. But still not that great of a guy! He belatedly breaks up with Knives, who in her predictable teenage angst vows revenge on Ramona for stealing Scott from her. And, although he continues to battle the exes, who include some very funny actors (Chris Evans, Mae Whitman, Jason Shwartzman), he complains about her dating history. Frustrated, Ramona decides to leave Scott and go back to the seventh and final evil ex, who just happens to be the famous record company executive organizing the battles of the bands that Scott and his bandmates have been competing in; and definitely the most evil of the exes. When Scott sets off to battle this biggest boss and win back Ramona, he’ll have to use all his combo moves and 1-ups. In the fun and surprising ending, Scott’s real prize isn’t the girl, but his self respect; and, rather than beating the boss, Scott himself is, in a manner of speaking, rescued. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World comes to Netflix this month. Vol. 30, 25 / Sept 27 - Oct 3, 2018
Dear Diary Thursday
What a day! I received a formal offer letter for my promotion to junior partner. Day-to-day things won’t change much, but I will be higher in the chainof-command around here. Until I take on the new title next month, it’s time to wrap up my current projects or pass them along to someone else. More good news, my assistant Ben, will be coming with me. He’s a good worker, like today, he was so helpful preparing to transfer me to my new office that I didn’t need any of the helpers that were on standby. His new work station is right outside my new office. I had made plans to eat lunch with Tim, but had to cancel after the day got busy. When we met up for dinner we both had an ear full to share with each other. Dinner turned into a mini-celebration for him because he just signed a new client that he’d been chasing for months. That will be more money in the bank for him, and a great look on his resume if he ever decides to branch out on his own. We made plans to do a full on celebration tomorrow night since it’s the weekend and neither of us has to work this Saturday. Just in case you were wondering, Tim is a senior executive at the Marketing Firm he works for (my firm does their financials). Although we’re often needed on weekends, it just so happens that we both have this one off. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
I shared with Tim about my day also and some of the details of my new responsibilities. I don’t know if it was the wine or the dinner lighting, but Tim looked like a desirable meal. When I couldn’t take it I excused myself and went to the bathroom to calm myself down. On my way out the door I thought to myself if I don’t hold my composure, I’ll mess around and end up in a relationship I don’t want. Now that I’m home, I’m realizing something I never thought about before. In all my years, I’ve never experienced a one-night stand, and to think on it, it could’ve happened tonight if I didn’t have self control. After getting in and doing a slight cleaning downstairs you would think that my tipsiness had worn off but earlier when I went into the shower I had to pay special attention to myself. By time I finished shower I was much more relaxed than I was before. Watch your ‘lil judgey’ self, a girl got to do what she must to be okay. At least I didn’t use Tim for it. Talking about Tim, I finally did my little background check on him. I don’t want to get into it tonight, but let’s just say it’s time to end this. 12
Shine-I His name comes from his levity in Rastafari along with reminder of the one who keeps him shining “upful” – The Almighty. I remember couple years ago when I Got it Bad was released, I had it on repeat for weeks. Let me re-introduce you to the one they call Shine-I and his family. Entertainer Shine-I had been an artist for nearly a decade and with a few hits under his belt. Singles such as Only Jah was writing because “at the time he was being reminded that people don’t always seem to remember that The Almighty is in control and that he is still on his thrown and sees and knows all” said Shine-I. His most recent single is Mommy and Daddy, which he recorded with his kids, who perform as the band Inna Shine. When we asked him what made him record with his family, he said it was just simply love. As you might imagine, there’s a story behind Mommy and Daddy that has to do with Shine-I’s love and admiration for his kids. He said that although they are young, they can be very vocal and their serious conversations at times makes him pause. “One day I found myself recalling what they’d said and I couldn’t stop myself from smiling at the realization that my children give me advice for a difficult time,” said Shine-I. It wasn’t until later that day 13
when he got home and they greeted him at the door “Daddy” and he realized that the simple greeting made his day. He wrote the song in that night. If you caught any of Shine-I’s recent performances, you may have heard him perform a song called Say What, which will be officially released next month. When the stage lights go off, he says he’s just a man who loves to surround himself with positive people and enjoys life’s pleasures of a good laugh, good workout and meditation. He’s a husband, a father, a son, brother and brethren. These human titles all come before his identity as an artist, and each role has helped shape who he is as a songwriter and musician. When we asked about his children’s future as performers, Shine-I said it’s not up to him: “Inna Shine will be whatever they want. My wife and I are fans and encourage and will always support them. We never try to impose anything on them.” Shine-I is currently working on his next album and hoping to release it in the early part of 2019. You can keep up the Shine-I and his family via Soundcloud @shineibvi, twitter @MusicByShineI, Instagram @shineiartist and Facebook @1ShineI. For bookings and more information, email the artist at irievigroup@gmail.com. Vol. 30, 25 / Sept 27 - Oct 3, 2018
New Water Safety Instructors Certified We’re surrounded by water, transported by boat between our islands, but sadly, too many of us can’t swim. In February 1986, three teenage Boy Scouts drowned just off St. Thomas while on a camping expedition after their boat capsized. The shore wasn’t far, but tragically, they were all unable to swim. Over the weekend, eight people completed the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s (WSI) certification course, sponsored by KATS and the Nanny Cay Hotel and Marina. The course, conducted by St. Croix Water Safety Instructors Trainer Kie Ransom, drew participants from various organizations in the territory. “The hope is that swimming and aquatics become a core component over the Virgin Islands education matrix,” said event coordinator and swimming instructor Dickson Igwe. He added that the idea is to incorporate the principles of water safety into everyday life. “That means we are looking at a generation of swimming instructors, effective swimmers and lifeguards. We’re looking over the next 5-10 years, having 100 lifeguards in the territory. They will be able to volunteer all over the country.” Ransom characterized the participants as serious, dedicated, and community-minded individuals who were seeking to gain knowledge so that they could offer more water related programs for youths

in the BVI. A water safety instructor is the highest of three levels. Below that is the basic water safety instructor and a water safety aide. Ransom noted that an aide’s swimming level is either intermediate or advanced, but they’re not quite strong enough to lead. Those at the basic level are confident in the water, but may need more assistance when it comes to instructing someone how to swim. Higher-level candidates are super confident in their teaching and effective with the knowledge they were trying to express to their students. “The BVI now has three tiers to work with… There are five WSI’s, a basic and two aides. BVI now have a wide variety and a broad spectrum,” Ransom said. Stacy Mather, who helped coordinate the training, said Ransom is knowledgeable and provided real-life examples and expertise. “The methods were thorough as safety was always promoted,” he stated. “As a country, our marine product is equally important to residents and visitors. Introducing our youth to the opportunities ¬– for enjoyment and employment – is critical.” Mather added: “We are pleased to have been a part of this training and look forward to developing more confident swimmers in the BVI.”
