This Week’s Feature Story By Chrystall Abel
Sleepless for Soca ca’s Daddy Milla; Grenada’s Loose Cannon; Trinidad and Tobago’s Sekon Sta; St. Kitts’ Blade and Mr. Mention; St. Maarten’s King Vers; St Vincent’s Mad Skull; and the United States Virgin Islands’ Kelly Jr. The finalists were selected from among 24 contestants at the July 1 elimination listening party held at Myett’s Chill Zone at the Tortola Pier Park. Last year’s winners were Martino “Tino” Mark and Dante “Pascal” Wattley. In addition to the BVI Soca Monarch title, the winner will receive a $10,000 prize. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $30 at Bolo’s or Hazem’s, and will cost more at the gate. All ticketholders will also be entered to win a Subaru Legacy Wagon, which will be raffled off Saturday at the event. Organized by HD Productions, the show is set to begin at 9 p.m. sharp, with the evening’s lineup determined by fan votes on the BVI Soca Monarch Soundcloud page. So get on over to what promises to be a great show and an exciting roll out to Festival!
Festival is beginning to heat up and there is no better way to get into the groove than at Saturday’s BVI Soca Monarch contest. Billed Soca Monarch BVI Meets Insomnia, the show, which is to be held at the Festival Grounds, will feature seventeen artists from around the Caribbean. Charly Black, whose soca dancehall crossover track Gyal You A Party Animal is climbing the Billboard dance charts this month, will make his first appearance in the VI as the show’s headliner. This year marks the fourth time the competition is being held and the first time the contest has been open to artists from elsewhere in the region. Unlike in previous bouts, 2016 competitors all compete against each other, rather than being sorted into the slower “groovy soca” and faster “power soca” categories. Of the 17 finalists, eight hail from the Virgin Islands including Pascal, 2014 Soca Monarch ,B’more, Hashim, Drastic, JJ, Teejay, Shiloh and Capable. Other finalists are Anguilla’s 2015 Soca Monarch Lioness, Antigua’s Nina Nyce; Domini-

Being Social Often we hear that social media is a waste, too time consuming, and for some, it’s something bad. I beg to differ. As far back as I can remember I have had social media accounts, from Black Planet and Myspace, to HI5, Twitter, and, of course, Facebook. I, for one, love going on the web and use it daily, so social media was not going to pass me by. Especially because I am a bit shy in person, I love to socialize on the computer. I have had pen pals, connected with family and made new friends through social media. I’ve even been friends with one young lady for nearly 10 years without ever having met her in person. We connected because of a mutual interest on one of the many social networks that I have been a member of and we have been in contact ever since. To date I would say that Facebook and Instagram are my two all-time favorite social networks. Facebook is very entertaining. When I am not playing a Facebook game or chatting with friends, my timeline never allows me to get bored. Users tend to spill a lot of beans (information) on there, so if you want to know somebody’s business or get insight into current events, check out Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
your Facebook timeline: someone there is sure to have the 411. Instagram, meanwhile, appeals to my vanity. Since I was just a toddler I have loved taking pictures. If you ever get the chance to look at my family photo albums, you will see me doing some kind of pose. Although I tend not to post to Instagram every day (I don’t want my followers to get sick of me!) I do take a picture pretty much daily. My brother tells me this photo habit is annoying all the time, and he tends to run when he sees me with a camera. But seriously, I love art and to me, that’s what pictures are. The lens of a camera can capture the most beautiful images and Instagram users never seem to let me down. Although there are some with a bitter taste in their mouth when it comes to using social media, I believe it all boils down to how you use it. All in all, I think it’s a great thing. Who knows what can happen on social media? Maybe the entertainer who lives next door will get discovered or the guy with no confidence will gain some. It could happen. 6

Finding Dory If you loved the movie Finding Nemo, you will already be familiar with the character Dory, a blue tang fish (voiced by Ellen Degeneres). The sequel, Finding Dory will definitely keep the kids entertained and my general take is that the film will also teach your kids the value of family and sticking together as friends. The movie starts with the sea – kids learning about “migration” from Mr. Ray’s lecture and it leaves Dory thinking about her family. She asks Marlin (Nemo’s dad) to help her find them in California. The journey starts out when Dory, Nemo and Marlin hitch a ride with the sea turtles down the sea current. Their first stop is an abandoned looking part of the ocean, where shipwrecks can be seen. Dory has a flashback memory of being there once. Dory, however gets stuck in some plastic waste and is rescued by the marine life workers, who took her into the Marine Life Institute and leave her in quarantine. There she meets the chameleon-like and curmudgeonly, octopus, Hank (voiced by Ed O’Neil), who is a fun character in the movie. Hank’s main goal is to be transferred to the Cleveland Aquarium so that he doesn’t have to end up in the ocean. Meanwhile on the inside, Hank is trying his best to get Dory’s transfer tag for himself. They work out a deal where Hank would help her find Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

a map and then she would hand over the tag to him. While at the map, workers approach, so to escape Hank, who was transporting Dory in the coffee pot bursts through a door. Dory ends up not in her planned destination but reconnecting with Destiny (voiced by Kaitlin Olson), a nearsighted shark. There she also meets Baily the Beluga, who swears up and down that something is wrong with his echo. As you get deeper into the flick, Dory manages to end up in the transfer tank where she learns her parent’s names and that they left to find her many years ago. On the outside Marlin and Nemo surface and meet a couple of seals, who will help them get inside the Marine Institute. Here is where Becky the cuckoo bird will help them. Strange that a bird would help two fishes instead of eating them. Puzzles me too, but hey it’s a cartoon! Becky dips Marlin and Nemo in her pail, and on the way, impatiently Marlin manages to tip the pail and he and Nemo end up in a fish tank by one of the souvenir shops in the Marine Institute. While trying to find Dory, Marlin and Nemo are accidently dropped down a pipe where they meet up with Dory and continue to search for her parents. I think I’ll leave you the reader hanging right here, so I don’t spoil the picture for you. I can tell you one thing though – the ending is my favorite part! Vol. 28, 47 l July 21 - July 27, 2016
SPOTLIGHT This Week’s Story by By Laura Thomas Xtreme Band - 17 Years Strong Xtreme Band has been working non-stop for 17 years, but even after nearly two decades, they’re nowhere near ready to slow down. Dirk “Dirky” Walters band founder and musical director and main producer/engineer, says he relies on his band mates, including rhythm programmer Tony Smith; bassist Darryl “Relo” Blyden; vocalists Jamori “Jay Jayy” Blaize and Vincent “VW” Williams; keyboardist Junie “Bandura” Huggins; and guitarist Craig “Mitchie” Browne. When the stage lights go out, they are a group of down-to-earth guys who like to have fun, crack jokes and drink some rum. As often as they can the band meets to check up on each other. They would also share ideas and thoughts about what they can do to improve their music and themselves.“As a unit it’s always great constantly learning from each other and having different personalities in the mix,” Dirky said. Xtreme Band has accomplished a lot over the years including releasing songs locally, regionally and internationally. They’ve won Road March titles and performed from Trinidad and Tobago to Miami and elsewhere. The band has been privileged to collaborate and perform with artists such as Onyan of Burning Flames, Jamesy P, Denise Belfon, Michelle Sylvester, The Baron, Winston Soso, Peter Ram, Duane Stephenson, and many more. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
Xtreme’s last single Resurrect came in second during last year’s Festival Road March competition. The song came about during a performance at Matcha’s, when their friend Jamie Hopkins came onstage and did a dance to a riddim track that was playing. Before that, Dirky says the band had a single called We Ain’t Tired Yet, which highlights the feeling of energy people get in the heat of Festival: “No matter how much you party, you always find the stamina to keep going.” In the future the band plans on diversifying even more, as they will produce and perform all genres of music. They also hope to be even bigger ambassadors for the Virgin Islands musically. They are currently working on new original music. Xtreme Band’s goal is to always be unique and not be stuck in a box as one specific type of group. They just wrapped up performing at the Festival Village in St. John and are gearing up for BVI Festival 2016. Fans and supporters can find the band in the Festival Village, August Monday Parade and at various events throughout the territory, as the band plays for parties, bars and private events. “We make it our mandate to play music for everyone, as we live in a diverse community and try to blend our original music with a little of other styles as well,” Dirky said. Xtreme Band can be found on Facebook and has a new website in the works. 12
