Begin Again This is a great movie for those who love New York City and a feel good movie as two people come together to make a live album, which in turn helps them both move forward in their lives. Starring two of my favorite actors, Mark Ruffolo as Dan and Kiera Knightly as Gretta, they meet after Gretta, a young singer songwriter from the UK, is self consciously encouraged onto the stage by her good friend and fellow musician Steve (James Corden). Her song is good, but the audience is not really paying attention. One person who is paying attention though is Dan, who has just been to his office with his scantily clad teenage daughter and has basically been fired from his position as disillusioned A&R manager at a big-time recording company. He wanders into the bar, and is mesmerized by Gretta’s performance, there is a great scene where he starts seeing the song with accompanying instruments dancing (in his mind) around the stage – just completing the song. Impressed, he follows her outside, and goes to talk to her after her performance. He’s had a few drinks, and she takes a while to warm to him but once he explains his background and some of the greats he has worked with she decides to go along with his plan for her to meet his ex-boss. The side story is that Gretta originally came to New York to support her singer boyfriend, Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
however, once he finds fame, and takes off on the road he admits to an affair with his producer. Disillusioned, Kiera goes with Dan to his old company to make a pitch for their album. The boss is not impressed and so they leave and decide to make their own album, the old fashioned way. They record it on the streets and alleyways of New York, which gives the music another dimension. Dan is also struggling personally, and is trying to make amends with his wife who threw him out some months earlier. He enlists his daughter into the band, along with other musicians from his past. One night Dan and Gretta take to the streets with an iPod and a splitter (so they can both listen) and walk through the city streets listening to their favorite tracks. He walks her home and you suspect there could be a moment, however this is broken when her friend Steve comes home. She decides to contact her ex-boyfriend with a song that she sings to him over the phone about how much he has hurt her, and following this, he is desperate to see her again and to try and make amends. Mark is also moving back into the apartment with his family. So with the album finished, they decide to put it on Amazon for $1 and share the proceeds with the band and, of course, it is a great success. A fantastic film for NYC and music lovers everywhere, don’t miss it. Available on iTunes now. 8

He is Backing Out
Dear Koren, I had gotten accepted to start college and my boyfriend had said he would help me, but now he is saying he can’t manage right now and I should wait another year. Next thing I know, he bought his mother a ticket to go to New York for Labour Day and I only find out by accident. Does this mean that he is not interested in my goals? Should I really wait, should I or go without his help and end the relationship? – AW Dear A.W., I can understand how terribly disappointed you must be, but the options that you are giving yourself sound rather restrictive; wait or go and end the relationship. I am reluctant to believe that you did not have another financial plan in place and were depending only on him. Whatever the other plan was, is it enough to get you started for the first year until his help comes? The decision about whether to go or not should be based on whether you have the finances to start and how much you are willing to work towards it. You could decide to wait a year at home and then next year he comes up with an excuse. I think you should take full responsibility for yourself and if you have any reliable family members to help you that would be nice. Do not put your dream in the hands of someone else. Whether he buys his mother a ticket or not is irrelevant to you. The cost of a ticket to NY might be miniscule compared to tuition fees. Also, a person’s relationship with their parent, especially
one who has been there for them over the years, need not be compared with a romantic relationship because as you know, relationships come and go. Take an objective look at your finances and think of how badly you want to do this and make an assessment about how it can be done. Contact the school to see what scholarships you qualify for and see if you can do part time work on campus. Ending the relationship sounds like a really drastic action just because someone cannot give you certain financial support right now. Assuming he means more to you than just being a cash cow, I would suggest you try to be understanding and consider alternate means of meeting your goals. An “Awesome Experience” for Jason Edwin For Jason Edwin, the 2016 NBA Americas Team Basketball camp in Mexico, which is part of the Digicel NBA Jumpstart program, was an ‘awesome experience.’ Edwin said it was interesting seeing the ‘super Jason Edwin powers’ of our region including Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Mexico, the talent that they have at the Under-17 level. He also learned from the coaches they brought on board for the camp, particularly how they broke down the game in terms of what the rest of the world is doing to develop their basketball players. “That experience in itself was awesome,” he said. “Chris Coley, director of international basketball for the NBA, has been responsible for developing the US U-17 national team for the last 10-12 years and they are number one in the world. He took us through a series of fundamental drills that they use to develop athletes.” One of the things they spoke about is that the problem of too many coaches and not enough teachers in terms of teaching the right ways to play the game. “From the classroom level, you’re supposed to teach the youngsters the proper mechanics, how to treat their body and selling the sport—those are things that were stressed,” he stated. Edwin said these fundamentals include hand and footwork. He stressed that before going into other things like shooting, dribbling or passing, you start off with footwork. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
“A lot of players want to play the sport but don’t have the footwork, like running and jumping mechanics, and you have to have coordinated movements to play the sport,” he stated. “They also stressed that its not just one person but now it’s my job to have a collection of coaches and trainers and lay out how we want the development to go from the grassroots level on up. Everybody had to understand and be on the same page, and everyone has to know what’s being thought and then it’s a natural progression to the next level. Once the fundamentals of each stage followed, that’s when you’ll begin to see success and expect success because you have had the proper programs and tournaments to attend in place.” Edwin said the program showed how far the BVI is behind in basketball development, praising the training facilities in host-country Mexico. “That’s all they concentrate on. It has everything— gym, weight room, cafeteria—everything needed,” he said. “We have a decent facility but we don’t have that focus and concentration on whatever particular sport we are doing to help accelerate them.” He added that adequate skilled coaches are also needed. “They reach far and wide to ensure that they have proper specialist coaches at that facility,” Edwin said. Edwin will head the local leg of the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Program, which will run Sept. 2-4 at the Multipurpose Sports Complex. This year’s program will target both boys and girls. 10
