Dark’n Stormy Not sure what to do for the long holiday weekend? If you’ve been longing to attend the West End Yacht Club Dark’n Stormy Regatta, this weekend is the perfect time. Celebrating its 22nd anniversary, the event is known more for its inclusive spirit of fun than stiff competition, according to Marty Halpern, who has helped organize it from the beginning. “There are always serious racers in the event, but we set it up so that you could race anything: any boat, any size, any look,” Marty once said. This system means many different kinds of boats are competitive, which in turn brings in “a real cross section of the boating community in Tortola,” he said. In addition to the races themselves, facilitated by the West End Yacht Club, the event also boasts a “fun day” designed to encourage participants to get to know the sister island. Events include the inter-island horseshoe competition, plus kite making,

sandcastle building, dinghy races, and organized sightseeing for those who want to see the famous Anegada flamingoes. The fun begins with a registration party on Friday at Marche, Trellis Bay from 6–9am. On Saturday late registration is also at Marche from 8–9am followed by a skippers meeting at 9am and 1st start is at Bellamy Cay 10am. Then on Sunday it’s Lay Day at the Anegada Reef Hotel. Enjoy or participate in the various competitions of the day including the sandcastle contest and backwards dingy race plus fun and games on the beach. The event wraps up Monday with the pursuit race back from Anegada to to Soper’s Hole. All are welcome to join the awards presentation at 6:30pm and after-race party for more dancing, prizes and food at Omar’s Fusion. In case you didn’t know, this Monday is a public holiday. I’ll confess that some of our public holidays are a mystery to me, but not this one. This Monday we celebrate the life of Hamilton Lavity Stoutt, the territory’s first chief minister. Mr. Stoutt was born in Long Bay in 1929 and was one of the territory’s earliest secondary students. He was businessman and a lay preacher in the Methodist Church, and was first elected to serve as a parliamentarian in 1957. He called himself the Loverboy of the people, and there can be no doubt he was admired by the voters, who sent him back to the House at every election until his death in 1995. Nearly 40 years as an elected representative earned him a reputation throughout the region and abroad. He was even given an Obituary in the United Kingdom’s Independent Newspaper, which called him “a man for all Caribbean seasons.” Most folks today will know his name because the BVI’s first tertiary school is named after him. Not as many Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

may know that he was one of the driving forces behind creating college, the Central Administration Complex, the territory’s first cruise ship pier, and many other major capital projects of the BVI. Back in 2015, to mark the 20th anniversary of Mr. Stoutt’s passing, Lorna Smith, who had served as his Permanent Secretary and was a protégé of Mr. Stoutt, gave a tribute to him in which she described Mr. Stoutt as a nation builder. She made a memorable case, but what stuck with me was the way she described the BVI’s progress from an agrarian economy to a fully modern one under his leadership: “He first entered the Legislature to be sworn in on his horse Sonny. By the 1980’s, the Cadillac was his vehicle of choice.” If you want to learn more about Mr. Stoutt’s legacy, you will probably hear some very nice tributes on Monday morning during the annual wreath laying ceremony at the Cappoon’s Bay Burial Ground. The ceremony is scheduled for 9am, and attendees are asked to don their cultural wear.

She Devil

An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary

Chapter 7: Comfort at Home I’m so excited to see David this weekend. It’s been three months since I last saw him and I couldn’t wait any longer. He promised to spend two weeks with me. Not enough time for me but I’ll take it. Look at me getting all giddy over a man, not even Troy got this kind of reaction from me. Work was work. You would think those two tricks Troy and Britney would be having the time of their lives because I wasn’t paying attention to their little affair; but no, they both insisted on trying my patience on a regular basis. Trust me when I say their day is coming. I spent my day off this week giving the house an extra-thorough cleaning and preparing a space for David’s things because he was staying with me. What I love most about David is that he accepts me for me. I’ve given plenty of guys a chance over the years, but they always trip on my work and expect that I’ll give up my source of income for them. He was practical, insisting that if any of private sessions get extra-special, that I need to use protection. I wasn’t really one to sleep with the guys in my private sessions, but since this whole thing with David kicked off during a session, I can see why he’d mention it. “Hey boo!” I screamed as I ran into David arms. “Did you miss me?” David was laughing his cute laugh and said, “Yes, I did.” We continued the small talk until we got back to my place. He let me to know that in the morning he has to go visit family but he’d be back by the 11

end of the day. Seeing that I work on Sunday night, I passed him the extra key and let him know that’s for him to use while he is here. Work and school still goes on. On Tuesday I was walked in from school to see David on the couch in his boxers watching the sports channel. Typical man, I thought to myself. He looked sexy though. I walk over to him and sat on his lap and kissed him. He turned off the TV and turned his attention to me. “How was class?” he asked. “Good; I’m getting the hang of this stuff. This might be my best semester ever in terms of ease of the classes and my high grades,” I replied. “So you really ready to give up in the club in a year?” David asked. “Yea, I’m ready. I never intended to work for the club forever. You remember the private gig I told you about that the Don set me up with? I think it’s what I needed to pay this place off so I can sell it. I’m so ready to move away from this lifestyle and make something better for myself.” He just nodded, encouraging me to continue. “I told myself when I started that I was going to make the cash for my short and long term goal then get out. You know this ish is not all the glamour it appeared to be.” David and I spend the next few hours talking until it was time for me to get ready for work. I must admit, that was something I’ve never done. I like conversations like that. Vol. 30, 46 / Feb 28 - Mar 6, 2019

Oh so it’s great that I watched the movie before the reviews because if it was the other way around I would’ve never given it a chance Welcome Home is about a couple that rents a house in the Italian countryside in an attempt at reconciling, but their romantic plan is interrupted by the owner’s evil one. Yea I know that line alone is the whole movie but let me break it down for you. Cassie (Emily Ratajkowski) and Bryan (Aaron Paul) went to spend time in Italy to fix their relationship, which has been spiraling since Cassie’s affair. The morning after they arrive, Cassie goes on a hike, has a mishap, but, thanks to their closest neighbor Fredrico (Riccardo Scamarcio), she makes it back safely to the guest house. Fredrico seems friendly and helpful, even advising them on where to go in the city, but something about him rubs Bryan the wrong way. A fight in the town makes Cassie turn to catch a cab back home, which was the perfect opportunity for Fredrico to get inside Bryan’s head after learning that Cassie cheated on him. At this point, I wondered why Bryan even came to Italy with Cassie because to me he acted like a real idiot throughout the movie. But back to 13

business! Bryan winds up spending the night away from the house, so naturally Cassie was upset with him, but she calms down when she hears that he was safe with Fredrico. Cassie’s infidelity kept playing in Bryans mind so much that he couldn’t hardly bear to touch. Fredrico found gullible Cassie an easy target into their lives and he played it well. He tries winning the couple over by cooking them dinner, but before the meal is settled, Bryan lets him know it’s time to go. In a turn of events Fredrico finds himself in a predicament I thought was going to play the other way and soon Eduardo (Francesco Acquaroli), the owner of the home, reveals himself to the couple as if he’s trying to check on things. The couple soon realizes that there’s something odd about him. You know for a movie that got rotten reviews it sure can keep your attention. I remember the end had my mouth on the floor and maybe that’s where the critics give it two stars’ review. Who knows? Will Cassie and Bryan fix their relationship? What are Fredrico and Eduardo true motives? Welcome Home can be streamed on Netflix.

A Big Throw For Big Man Henry In the territory’s track and field world, there’s a gravitation towards sprinting events. Everyone wants to be the fastest on the running part of track but hardly anyone gravitates towards field events. Admittedly, it’s not a sexy as the sprints. However, the reality is, that most of the territory’s success in track and field, came from field events. A quick glance at the Carifa Games stat sheet—the barometer of the sport at its core development—shows that 25 of 44 individual medals have been won in field events. Among the names would the that of Eldred Henry. The territory’s strong man, tipping the scales well over 350 bounds, is a force to reckon with. Picking up where he left off last summer after winning the Central American and Caribbean Games Shot Put bronze medal and establishing a personal best of 20.63m, the No. 33 mark in the world in 2018, the big man, competing for Findlay University in Ohio, unleashed a big shattering throw. It was on his third attempt, that Henry exploded in the circle, with the longest Shot Put throw of his collegiate career, to win the Great Midwest Athletics Conference Indoor Championships crown on his home track in Findlay, Ohio on Saturday. Henry not only won the conference crown with his 20.61m (67 feet7 ¾”) heave, but in the process, broke the 5-year old NCAA Division II Record, Conference Record and School Record, as well as his own 20.00m BVI Indoor Record. It’s also the 20th best throw in the world so far this season on the IAAF list. “It wasn’t a matter of correcting anything,” Henry

said while analyzing his first two throws with the 16-pounds ball, that were 19.02 and 18.63m respectively. “I was able to get over my left leg by being more patient out of the back of the circle, which allowed me to hit the right positions, then it was just to be aggressive on the finish.” Henry’s feat brought the number to 25 conference titles that BVI collegians have won in 11 different conferences since 1979. Before improving his indoor best, Henry demolished Eric Matthias’ indoor Weight Throw mark of 19.04m that stood since 2005, with a personal best heave of 19.56m, to place fourth in the competition. In other competitions, Indiana freshman Rikkoi Brathwaite had a fourth place showing in the 60m dash, after completing the short sprint in 6.71 seconds. He advanced to the final by running 6.69 to win his semifinal heat. Central Florida Jr. Nelda Huggins, was seventh in the American Indoor Conference Championships final in 7.50 seconds, after running 7.46 in the semis. Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, a Clemson Jr., got to the line in third place during her 400m meter heat, with a non-advancing time of 56.38 seconds. Kala Penn, a Florida Long Jump Jr., settled for eight place in the South Eastern Conference Indoor Championships in with a best leap of 5.91m. In the Triple Jump, she recorded a best mark of 12.55m.
