7th Annual Graffiti Party The KSA Lodge #778 Fraternity’s 7th annual Graffiti Party goes down this Saturday from 10pm-3am at Captain Mulligans in Nanny Cay. Organizer Rhodni Skelton shared that proceeds from this event are distributed throughout the year to various local charities. In the past, the fraternity has supported worthy causes like the Rainbow Children’s Home, the BVI Red Cross, the Family Support Network and even helped the Special Needs Olympics. Individuals in the fraternity have also helped persons with expensive or unusual medical needs. And speaking of unusual — this year is “The Glow Silent Edition.” In a first of its kind move for the BVI that’s sure to please the neighbors, this party will have no speakers so when you walk into the party the only thing you will here is silence, or maybe some off-key singers singing along to their favorite tune.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

Switching things up from the other years, each patron will be using a set of headphones. With three DJ’s playing, partiers can switch between frequencies to listen to the selector they chose: DJ Bertrum, DJ Carly Cartel and DJ Wiz. Each DJ will be assigned a color, so when you’re ready to switch up the tunes, just switch your color. Of course, it wouldn’t be the Graffiti Party without the t-shirts, glow pens and neon lights, which means that at the end of the night you get to take home your memories as well as your one-of-a-kind tee. There will also be jello shots and tasty baked treats (while supplies last) to help fuel your fun. Rhodni said this special event wouldn’t be possible without sponsor Road Town Wholesale and brand sponsors Heineken, Cruzan and Grey Goose. He also wanted to recognize Randy of Captain Mulligans for not hosting the event annually and for sharing the proceeds of every Heineken sold at the bar to the cause. Admission is $30 and it includes headphones and t-shirt. Celebrating your birthday? Taurus babies get in free but will have to purchase their headphones. This event is truly a party for the cause.

Anegada Casting Call

Alex told George. George came home and mentioned it to me. I in turn wanted to find out if it was really going to be a “thing,” and if so, when, what time and where. The “thing” was a casting competition. Walker Mangum and Danny Vanterpool were going to go head-to-head to see who could cast their fishing line the farthest. And it was real and would happen Thursday, April 19 at 4pm at the bridge at Saltheap Point. Rumors of big money being bet on each contestant fueled intrigue. As the day neared we found out

Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

that the competition was the brainchild of Alex of Anegada Adventures, who promises to be ready to compete next year. On Thursday, at the appointed time, on time, the two challengers and a group of about twenty spectators gathered on the shore at Saltheap Point. The tide was super low so Walker and Danny could walk way out on the sand and cast into the shallow water with the results easily seen and recorded by the marker volunteers, Shamaar, Shyanne and D’Angelo. The two challengers made several practice casts and then got down to business: lines whipping, breeze blowing, sun shining, libations flowing and spectators cheering. Eventually Danny was declared the winner and was presented a check for $1,000 from Anegada Adventures. We all lingered for a bit congratulating both competitors and enjoying the bonhomie. I tell you, it ain’t the Kentucky Derby, but it’s most definitely a “thing.” Check us next year.

Against All Odds

Chapter 4: Dawn of a New Day You would think by now I would’ve given up. Tomorrow is my thirty-fifth birthday and up to this day I haven’t got the big break I have been chasing. Over the years I did manage to stop couch surfing and get my life together. I even went to college. I have to credit Lisa with showing me the way to follow my dreams and have a back-up plan. I now own three music schools where I teach private lessons for the piano and I have a full time staff for the various students at each location. “Daddy,” my five year old Brittney said bringing me out of my thoughts. “Mommy is calling you for the phone, she said it’s grandma.” “Hello Mom,” I said. “How are you son?” she asks. Before I can answer, she starts rambling about spending some time with Brittney. I remember when Lisa told me she was pregnant. I wasn’t shocked because we stayed freaky in the sheets. I was praying for a boy — I guess to fill the void left by the relationship my dad and I never had — but I promised Lisa that if God sent us a healthy baby I’d consider us highly blessed. And little Brittney has been a blessing to my whole family. She was born just before my college graduation. I sent my mom an invitation to watch me walk in the cap and gown expecting she would come on her own. I got the shock of my life when I saw my dad accompanying her. As I matured, we had become more civil with each other, but it took Brittney’s birth for us to really establish a positive connection. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

That man loves his granddaughter. And spoils her more than my mom. I don’t know if it was guilt of losing out on my life or because he was old and this was his only grandkid. I believe it’s probably both. At least once a month I take Brittney and Lisa over to the Hamptons so that Britt can spend time with her grandparents. Sometimes Lisa still can’t believe I gave up a life of luxury to follow my dreams. I think that’s one of the reasons that she stood by my side throughout the ups and down. I worked hard for everything I owned and all thanks to my rock, when I fell, I picked myself up and kept pressing on. Not only have I gotten my degree — in music composition, of course — I own my own home, and feel like the music school is a fairly successful business. I appreciate what I have, but I’m still trying to achieve my dreams. May 10th, 2016 I was sitting in my office passing time until my three o’clock arrives. The ringing of my phone brought me out of my thoughts. “Good afternoon this is Brandon Wells....yes sir I understand, thank you.” I hang up and smile. …................................................................................. Do you Lisa Jones take Brandon Wells as your lawful husband? …............................................................................... Youth Set to Sail For the first time in a year, youth sailing will take center stage with the BVI Dinghy Championships this weekend in the Sir Francis Drake Channel, just off Nanny Cay. With St. Thomas’ Mia Nicolosi and the BVI’s Rayne Duff aging out of the Opti Class after dominating for the last several years, it’s time for new sailors to make their mark, and time for new Red, White and Blue Division champions to be crowned. This year’s event will be considerably smaller than in past years, but organizers are looking forward to welcoming back sailors from St. Thomas and Puerto Rico. Typically, St. Croix would also participate and adults compete in the Lasers. “We are expecting around seven sailors from St. Thomas and two from Puerto Rico,” event coordinator Tamsin Rand said. “Unfortunately, none from St Croix this year.” When Irma and Maria rolled through the territory in September, they not only destroyed dinghies, but also wiped out the annual back to school regatta, an opportunity for young sailors to showcase what they learned during various summer programs. “We lost around 80% of our boats to Irma, I don’t think anything got away with no damage at all,” Rand pointed out. “In the context of Optis, we had 19 pre-Irma and came out with three that we could use. Over the past few months, we have fixed up what we can, there are still a few to be done and we have received some very generous donations to help us rebuild the fleet.” Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Rand added: “Some of the kids who are now at school overseas donated their boats and we have donations from private individuals and yacht clubs to purchase new boats.” Hurricane Irma also affected the growth and development of the program that has sent several young sailors the International Sailing Federation World Championships at different levels over the years. Several of the youths have migrated since the storm. The Royal BVI Yacht Club program has been running again since January with two weekly after school classes and the occasional Saturday. Rand said that they are in the process of recruiting new instructors, as both left after Irma. “We hope to have someone in post in the not too distant future so we can expand the opportunities,” she stated. “We have around 12 sailors who have been involved in the after school classes since January and there is a group of new sailors who joined us for one of the Saturday Funsail sessions who are very keen to get started. Pre-Irma we were running classes four afternoons a week and on Saturdays with an average of 10 students per day so we are very low in comparison. “To some extent this is balanced to the number of boats we are able to use – in those first few weeks when we started again the kids had to share but we felt the most important thing was getting them back on the water.” 14
