Roundup This Week’s Feature Story by Laura Thomas Waving a Flag for the BVI I’m sure that every person in the BVI was beaming with pride when they announced the British Virgin Islands team at the opening ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil August 5th. We are proud of the four athletes who are representing the territory. Leading the team is three–time Olympic veteran Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, who is the first BVI athlete to qualify for three Olympics. She is joined by first–timers Ashley Kelly, Eldred Henry, and 16-year-old swimmer Elinah Phillip. This is the first time the BVI has sent a swimmer to the Olympics, and the 3rd summer sport that the BVI competes in along with track & field and sailing. In 1996, seven BVI athletes went to the Olympics in Atlanta. The 2016 Olympics is also the first time since 1984 in Los Angeles that the BVI has more women on the team than men. Over the years, the territory has had 18 track & field athletes, nine sailors and one swimmer.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

Reflecting on the opening ceremony, the athletes agreed that the experience was unique. Ashley had the honor of leading the team as the flag bearer. Live coverage of all Olympic events in which the territory’s athletes are competing along with live coverage of other Caribbean athletes’ events will be broadcast on CBN Television Channel 51 and on CBN Radio 90.9FM. Day events are from 8am–2pm EST and in the evenings from 7-11pm EST. BVI athletes’ first events are on August 12th, when Tahesia will run in the women’s 100m preliminary round and round one, and Elinah Philip will swim in the women’s 50m freestyle. Semifinals for both events take place August 13th. On the 15th, Ashley Kelly will compete in round one of the 200m with semi-finals on August 16th and finals on August 17th. On August 18th Eldred Henry will be throwing the shot put.

Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Ask Koren Dating a younger Guy Dear Koren, I’m 34 years old and dating a guy who is 29. When we met and he told me his age, I told him I was 30 because I did not know it would get serious and I was just having fun. Now it’s been almost a year and I really love him. I see that he is mature and really serious about me and I want to tell him the truth. How do I do this without losing him and what do I do if he thinks I’m too old for him? – Writer Dear Writer, Seeing things have gone well for nearly a year, that would suggest that he is attached to the person you are, even without knowing your real age, so I do not think that the age made a difference in whether he likes you or not. What I think might be hard for him to deal with is the fact that you lied to him for so long. Your explanation of not knowing it would get serious could suffice for a short while, but one would expect that when you realized it was getting serious, you would confess. I guess you were fearful of his reaction. In any event, I suggest you tell him immediately. Clearly, an apology is in order and do not try to justify it. Just put it out there and be prepared for the consequences. There is nothing I can tell you that could stop him from walking away, especially if he had trust issues to begin with. He just might be understanding, or he might come up with a confession of his own. Alternately, he could decide that he does not

want to be with someone who is 34 years old or someone who lied to him. If age is the problem, you could try to convince him that you are still the same person. If the lie is what he has issues with, then you can try telling him it’s not a habit, but you know how the saying goes, “a man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still.” If he stays in the relationship, watch out for him being suspicious of you and wondering what else you are hiding. If you lose him, I’m sorry, but you would have at least gained a valuable lesson in understanding how dishonesty can destroy a good relationship, and you can endeavor to be honest in the future. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 9

Phillips Historic Olympic Games Splash Elinah Phillip will make her splash from Lane 8 in Heat 6 at 12:02pm on Friday, becoming the first BVI woman to swim in the Olympics. Her entrance in the games makes swimming the third sport behind track and field athletics and sailing to compete in the Summer Olympics for the BVI since the territory’s debut in Los Angeles in 1984. Phillip is coming off winning a bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle at the UK Summer National Championships in England at the end of July. Phillip, who was ranked fifth heading into the competition, recorded a time of 26.65 seconds to finish third, after a 26.86 in the heat. Her best is 26.56. “It was a good swim and I felt a lot more powerful than I did in the heats in the morning session,” Phillip, 16, said. “I know I can swim faster because I have in the past so I’m excited.” Phillip said she was working on her finish since that’s an area in which she loses most of her time. She finished and started well and said she’s happy. Her time came 14 days before she would make her splash in Rio and said at the time, “this helped me because I now know where I am at the moment so now I know what I need to do and where I need to get stronger and it gives me a good idea of how I’ll swim in Rio.” “I’m very excited about Rio,” said Phillip who was just eight when her federation was formed in Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

2008 and has been granted a wildcard by swimming’s governing body FINA. “I was very anxious because I had to wait a couple days longer than I expected, so it I feel like it meant more when I got the news. I feel honored to be the first of many and I think it shows that we are coming along and improving in all sports.” The past year has been a good one for her she said, adding that since 2014 wasn’t one of her best she felt she had a lot to prove to herself. “I made a lot of improvements time wise, stroke wise, mentally, physically and everything else,” she pointed out. “It has been really good and I’m excited to see what I can do in Rio.” Having competed regionally at the OECS Championships and the Carifta Games and internationally at the FINA World Long and Short Course Championships, Phillip said the other competitions have been steppingstones for the Olympics. “I’m surprised actually,” she said of going to Rio after a short swimming career, adding, “I never really imagined this happening but I guess if you work for it, you can achieve it.” Phillip says the 50m Freestyle is one of her favorite events. “You just dive in and go with not too much thinking,” she said. “It’s a splash and dash, just do what you have to do and get it done.” 10
