Putting the Fun in Fundraiser People love to say that the best way to see the BVI is on the water. Soon you’ll have a chance to see the best of Virgin Gorda’s North Sound and support Virgin Islands Search and Rescue at the same time. The territory’s water search and rescue is carried out by dedicated VISAR volunteers and funded almost entirely by charitable donations. Next Saturday, May 6th, the organization is holding their annual Swim and SUP the Sound. This is the major fundraiser for the year, and it includes an open water swim race, standup paddle board race, and a family fun day at the finish line at Leverick Bay. The exact course is still being finalized, but SUP and two-mile swim competitors will start from the Bitter End Yacht Club dock, while 1-mile swimmers will start from the deck of a dive boat. After the finish, join in the fun games for

kids and families on the beach and in the pool, and enjoy a barbecue from the kitchens of Leverick Bay. As in years past, you can support the organization even if you’re not up for a competitive swim. Just sign up in what they call the “assisted” swim category. What does that mean? Bring along your fins or a snorkel to help you complete the swim. After the races, recover or just enjoy the scene at Leverick Bay, where there will be beach and pool games for kids and families, plus a barbecue. There’s always a lively scene of music and celebration as swimmers and SUPers finish their events. If you want to sign up for the races, join the boat ride over to be part of the cheering section, or learn more about the event, visit visar.org/event/ swim-sup-sound-2018.

Baby Traditions part 2 Back when I was expecting, I shared some of the traditions that people told me about pregnancy and newborns. Now that I’ve had my baby and he is big enough to meet people all over the island, I am again hearing a lot more traditions, superstitions and, of course, advice. That’s right, it’s time for another round of baby traditions. Ever hear the phrase “sleep like a baby?” My son’s sleep isn’t as peaceful as the phrase suggests, but according the old folks, when he and other babies do settle in and sleep, they always dream of angels. I like to imagine some of the family members who passed before the baby was born are his personal angels. My son has a head full of curls, so a lot of the traditional wisdom we hear is about hair. For example, did you know you’re not supposed to cut a baby’s hair before they can talk? (An alternate version says to wait until the first birthday.) If you do, according to one legend, they might never wind up speaking. Similarly, some folks say the early haircut will cause the baby to develop a stutter. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

6

I’ve also heard that you shouldn’t comb a child’s hair while they sleep or they could wind up “slow.” I didn’t have the sense to ask at the time if this was a reference to physical speed or just a euphemism for a dull wit, but now that I have a crawler on my hands, I sure wish I had. I’d have no problem combing the baby’s hair while he naps if it meant he couldn’t scoot away from me so swiftly! Lately my little guy seems bigger every time I see him, so I shouldn’t be surprised that people have so much to say about what makes babies grow faster. One woman told me that the more you bathe a baby, the faster they grow. I can’t deny that once my little one started moving around more and eating enough to need daily baths, he did start to pack on the pounds. Speaking of weight, it’s not a good idea to call a baby heavy. “Only the dead are heavy,” the saying goes. I especially like that one because it reminds me as a parent that my son might be a bit of a physical burden – he’s now big enough to give me backache if I carry him for too long – his life is a blessing.

Against All Odds Chapter 2: The First Step

It’s been eight months since I got out from under my parents’ roof. I wait tables during the day and a couple of nights a week I perform my music at the Ritz restaurant. It isn’t the ideal platform to get my music out there but I figure it’s a start. My tiny studio apartment is far from the luxuries at my parents’ place, but having my own space away from their expectations is priceless. I talk to my mom every so often. When she starts asking when I’ll “come to my senses,” aka move home and do what they want, I cut our conversations short. I haven’t spoken to my dad since he gave me the ultimatum of either pursuing his goals for me, or getting out his house. I guess you can tell what my choice was. So far my double jobs haven’t hindered my ability to work on my own music – I can’t help but write while I’m waiting for customers or on breaks during gigs at the restaurant. I love sneaking my original songs into my setlist of standard tunes from the greats to see how the audience reacts. “Yo man, have you heard about this composer competition that’s happening next couple of months?” my friend and coworker Michael asked as we restocked the restaurant. “No I haven’t, tell me more about it,” I replied. “Well the competition is in three months. The winner gets a contract to produce their own music for a musical and $50,000,” Michael said. It may not be the deal that you want but it’s a 11

start. Imagine if you won. You know how many girls I can bag off you? Michael joked. “But seriously man, it will be a start to your dreams. Imagine if someone really important sees the the play hears your music, and can sign you or connect you to the right person?” The thing that I’ve noticed about the music business is that you have to continually improve. Even if you’re on top, the work never stops. Otherwise, you risk becoming irrelevant. Now, Michael has me thinking. I can’t enter this competition unless I really believe I can win. No matter how much I love playing the piano, I remember the first time I was put on the spot. It wasn’t a successful night as I was too scared to show what I was made of so I never got up on the stage. “Yo man, stop second guessing yourself and enter,” he scolds me. After only seven months of friendship, I feels like I’ve known Michael all my life. He knew what was going on in my head. And maybe he’s right. I have the love, I have the talent – What’s really keeping me back?

Against All Odds is a five-part short story. Watch this space to read the rest in future editions of Limin Times. You can read chapter 1 in Vol 30, 2 or on our wewebsite. Vol. 30, 3 / Apr 26 - May 2, 2018

Been There, Prayed That Been There, Prayed That has all the drama of a soap opera, but it’s set in the lives and churches of a very relatable extended family. It is book two of the New Day Diva series written by E. N. Joy, and continues to follow matriarch Mother Doreen as she leaves Ohio and heads to Kentucky to take care of her ailing diabetic sister. The characters in this series will keep you entertained until the final page. When Mother Doreen arrives to take care of her younger sister Bethany, she finds that Bethany’s husband Uriah, who’s a truck driver, is nearly always on the road. This leaves poor Bethany in need of help caring for the couple’s two children, Sadie and Hudson. Mother Doreen, who has a strong faith, begins to suspect something may not be right when the church’s assistant pastor, Pastor Frey, pays way too much attention to Bethany and her sister’s belly begins to grow. We as readers realize along with Mother Doreen that her sister’s home and church aren’t what they appear to be, and when the truth comes out, it’s truly shocking. Back home in Ohio, Sister Lorain, the newly appointed leader of New Day Temple of Faith single’s ministry seems to have it all: A good home and a strong relationship with God, but again, things aren’t what they seem. As we follow Lorain’s Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

12

daily life, we see that she can’t seem to get along with, much less say anything nice, to fellow church sister Unique. Let me tell you a little about Unique, she is ‘hood’. Her mouth gets the best of her, however she has three well-mannered, beautiful children. Could a bit of envy about the family be the real reason Sister Lorain looks down on her? Throughout the story, these two women have so many cat fights that only God knows why the pastor doesn’t thrown them out the church. Also in Ohio, church members Tamarra and Maeyl are developing the perfect romance until someone from Maeyl’s past shows up to Easter Sunday Service. But Tamara is no saint either. She has a huge buried secret that could cost her both her relationship with Maeyl and with her best friend. Will things work out for this small circle? With its message of faith and frequent moments of humor and surprise, this book and the whole New Day Divas series are worth a read. The author was formerly known as Joylynn Jossel, but adopted the pen name E.N. Joy after dedicating her life to Christ and transitioning to writing Christian fiction. Daughter obsessed with Social Media Dear Koren, How do I get my 17-year-old daughter to ignore social media until after her exams? I’m tired of talking, restricting the phone and arguing, but I can’t make her understand that she needs to focus on her academics to get into college and that she’ll have plenty of time for all the social media she wants later. The frustration is to the point that I’m sure my blood pressure is up. – Mother Dear mother, For most young persons, social media is something they do like they eat, sleep and use the bathroom, so trying to restrict it completely will feel to her like you are trying to stifle her very breath. Imagine someone telling you not to use your stove or your car; you see these things as such a daily part of life that you don’t even think about using them. Rather than complete restriction, try to compromise. It would be easier for her to hear you. Teenagers like to have some control over their lives and when they are constantly being told what to do, it makes them feel as if they are being treated like children. Many parents follow the philosophy of “do as I say under my roof.” I understand that too, but for the sake of the relationship, her education and your blood pressure, try a different strategy. 13

Sit with her and ask what her goals are for right now and the next few months. I’m pretty certain finishing school will be one of them. Discuss how the best and easiest way to be successful in that goal – and to move on with her friends and her future – is to do well on her examinations. This shifts the situation from you telling her what to do into you asking her to think about what she wants. You can mention that you know she likes being connected via social media and ask her for suggestions how she can balance that desire with her studying. Discuss when she has the most focus and use those times for studying, saving her periods of low energy for the phone activities. Let her know that you trust her to follow the guidelines you settle on together and that you won’t step in to take more control as long as she is able to do it for herself. I can see you are a good mother who is trying your best. Part of parenting is teaching children to balance their activities, make smart decisions, and process conflicts without arguing and shouting. Everything is a learning opportunity for your child, who soon will head to college where you won’t be so close by. That is why it’s so important that you use communication and reason to teach her how to plan, prioritize and practice a bit of delayed gratification for her own good. Vol. 30, 3 / Apr 26 - May 2, 2018

Imagine running from town west to Carrot Bay, up to Sage Mountain, then a jaunt across to and up Brewers Bay hill, over to the prison and Little Mountain, all before finishing at Beef Island. Torture, right? That was the course for the recent KPMG Tortola Torture, a race that attracted a record 122 participants, 43 of whom finished the entire 33.4-mile course. Winner Avery Collins, who shattered fellow Colorado resident Eric Senseman’s 2-year old course record, finished in 4 hours, 35 minutes and 45 seconds, eclipsing Senseman’s 4:45.05 mark. “It was brutal. Tough. It was really tough,” said Collins, who has run in 100-mile races. “I’m used to running on trails, this is all road. I’m coming from mainly high altitude races where it’s like 50 degrees, a pretty common temperature throughout the whole race. Here, it’s in the low 80s, extremely humid and after the hurricane, there’s no shade the whole time, so the sun is beating down on you. It’s different elements to have to deal with, but it never ends. The whole race you’re dealing with something different.” Collins might have gone even faster if hadn’t it been for a stomach ailment. “I spent like miles 20-28 throwing up, probably three times a mile. About mile 28, I got about a gallon out of my body,” Collins said afterwards. “For whatever reason, after dumping about a gallon, everything kinda turned around and I started running fast again. The course is beautiful. Tough. Relentless and unforgiving. The first 10 Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

miles are a tease because it’s so flat. Breezy, nice and easy. Then just like that, a light switch flips, then you’re in dirt and rocks. Right after that, its slightly technical and then all the steep stuff, which is really fun. It’s a great course.” Julius Farley, in third place overall, was the first BVI runner with a time of 5:17.08. “This was the toughest race I ever dreamed about. It was really tough, especially the hills,” he said. “I started to get pain about a third of the race—pain in my calves and my groin. I was struggling for the rest of the race. At one point, I thought I wasn’t going to finish the race. I switched to survival mode trying to get to the finish. Clif [Struiken] passed me, but I came back and passed him after he cramped.” Struiken had never run anything over nine miles and placed fourth with 5:25.56. “It was tougher than I expected. For some reason, my legs didn’t really cooperate today and at the very first hill, I got cramps and they developed into very tough cramps,” he explained. “I couldn’t push the pace. I struggled through and I’m so happy I got to the finish line.” Colorado’s Sabrina Stanley was the top woman finishing in 5 hours, 27 minutes and 23 seconds “I struggled with the heat and humidity more than I’ve done in any other race,” she said. Runners will return in 2019 to do it yet again.
