Race to Anegada Not sure what to do for the long holiday weekend? If you’ve been longing to explore the “drowned island,” the Pusser’s Anegada Race is the perfect time. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the event is known more for its inclusive spirit of fun than stiff competition, according to Marty Halpern, who has helped organize it from the beginning. “There are always serious racers in the event, but we set it up so that you could race anything: any boat, any size, any look,” Marty said. This system means many different kinds of boats are competitive, which in turn brings in “a real cross section of the boating community in Tortola,” he said. In addition to the races themselves, facilitated by the West End Yacht Club, the event also boasts a “fun day” designed to encourage participants to get to know the sister island. Events include the inter-island horseshoe competition,

which typically pits BVIbased teams against those from the USVI, plus kite making, sandcastle building, dinghy races, and organized sightseeing for those who want to see the famous Anegada flamingoes. The fun begins at Pusser’s Marina Cay with a registration party Friday the 3rd at 6pm. Racing to Anegada is Saturday the 4th after a skipper’s breakfast at Marina Cay. After the finish at Anegada Reef Hotel, there’s live music and dancing at a BBQ. For non-sailors who want to join the fun, Road Town Fast Ferry will offer a special ferry service from Road Town on Sunday the 5th. The boat leaves at 8am and returns at 5pm, so there’s plenty of time to explore. The event wraps up Monday with the pursuit race back from Anegada to Peg Legs at Nanny Cay. All are welcome to join the after-race party for more dancing, food and prize-giving.

Losing Interest Dear Koren, How can you tell if a guy is losing interest in you? What about if suddenly he is no longer interested in sex and he is always on his phone and every interaction somehow turns into an argument? I am getting a very bad feeling about this and have been hurt before in the past when the guy acted similar to this. – Confused Dear confused, The answer would depend on who the guy is, as different persons would demonstrate lack of interest in different ways. The signs you describe could be waning interest, stress from work, health issues or something else entirely. Maybe you can ask your guy a few specific questions, like how are things at work and if everything is okay with his family. Or, you can be more general and just ask if everything is okay. Tell him you miss him and the closeness you used to share and see if that brings some effort on his part to reconnect. It might also be useful to give him some time in his zone – maybe a week or two and see if he comes back to his regular self. An argument can only live if both persons participate and you can choose not to argue. While what he is doing sounds like it is really frustrating and I understand that, someone else doing it in the past does not necessarily mean it has to have the same outcome. Continue to be observant, but ask direct questions too. Many relationships have a slump every now and again and that is normal, but you are right to pay attention to the changes and to Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

try your best to do something about them. If he really is on his way out, then you can try to repair the rift but only if the effort is on both sides. If he is really not interested, let him go. If he shows some inclination to get things back on track, your efforts might result in you as a couple reigniting the precious spark of love.

Sweet Self Care Recently I was struggling with some life disappointment or another: I can’t remember if it was a nasty cold or stress related indigestion or something else entirely. Whatever the case, I decided to draw on some advice I had heard from a medical pro and do some nice things for myself. Self-care, she had said, is something that people often neglect, to the detriment of their mental, and ultimately physical, health. The logic being that in life, as in the kitchen, you can’t pour from an empty cup. I dedicated an entire Sunday to the mission, and challenged myself to do only things that I could accomplish in my home and without spending any money. I started my day with a wholesome and delicious green smoothie spiked with seamoss gel. Armed with that nutritional boost, I was inspired to do something else nice for my body – a quick living room workout. Even though deep down I knew I’d feel better when I got through, I had a bit of a case of the “don’t wannas,” which I squashed by putting on a funny audiobook while I did my circuit of pushups, lunges, dips and crunches. Once my healthy moves were done, it was time for a fun reward, which for me was a home

pedicure. I don’t do these all the time but when I do, I take them very seriously. That means a soak, scraping the calluses and some serious moisturizing all have to happen before the nail polish even comes out. I think the years I spent on my feet working in a restaurant make this all feel like a fun ritual rather than just a lot of work. This home-spa experience reminded me that my younger (and far cooler) sister-in-law had raved about an exfoliating face mask you can make by combining charcoal powder and white glue. I felt a little silly mixing it together and trying to put it on may face without making a sticky, charcoaly mess, but it was so much fun to peel off after it dried that I’d totally do it again. After my feet and face were looking and feeling fresh, it was time for a few episodes of a favorite old TV show and a nap. I think under different circumstances, I might have kicked myself for not trying to get ahead on work or household chores for the coming week, but when I woke up the next day, I really felt refreshed! Consider me a self-care believer. 13

They’re Breaking Big Barriers Tynelle Gumbs and Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner broke through uncharted barriers during their respective indoor conference championships last weekend, with both improving their previous personal bests. The conference’s top seed, Gumbs was also the last thrower stepping into the ring, and opened the competition with her only legal throw with a distance of 21.45m (70 feet 4½ inches). That effort improved on the 69 feet 11½ inches she threw two weeks ago. “From the beginning of the season, I knew competing the GLIAC Championships was going to be really hard, especially for throwers, so my ultimate aim was to win conference, go to nationals and place in the top three. I’m ranked third currently,” explained Tynelle, who made NCAA Division II All Region representing the Midwest along with twin sister Trevia. “Being able to win conference was a big deal for me because it helped boost my confidence before nationals. I was two inches off the record, which was big again for me, because I know I can throw further and I will at nationals,” she said, adding, “Throwing 70 feet is also a big deal because it’s something I’ve been trying to do since the beginning of the season.” Gumbs said she aims to throw even farther in upcoming competitions. “The ultimate aim at nationals is to throw far, about 72 feet or further, so that I can be able to win nationals” she said. Warner, in her Atlantic Coast Conference Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Championships debut, ran a personal best of 2 minutes, 07.25 seconds to place second in her heat and advanced to her first conference final after chopping her best from 2:09.35. Her final heat time was 2:09.87. Her 2:07.25—though not a record because it was run on an oversized track—is the second best time by a BVI female behind Samantha John’s 2:06.64, from 2009. Warner was coming off helping the Distance Medley Relay to a second place finish in 11 minutes, 02.68 seconds, the second best time in Clemson history. She recorded a 2:05 split. “I ran my heart out to get to that final,” Warner noted. “In the final, I was just hoping to do anything at that point because my legs were tired and I had to stay mentally strong. When I ran 2:09, my body had never done. Running 2:05 and 2:07 in 24 hours and coming back with 2;09, I was proud of myself and my coach was proud of me as a freshman.” She said it was a great experience at the ACC Championships. “I would do it all over again—even with the nerves I went through—the excitement was so much more,” Warner noted. “Now I know how it is to be in a college championship and it was the best experience.” Warner and Gumbs will settle into their respective pet events outdoors, the 400m Hurdles and the Discus and Hammer Throws respectively. Their indoor form indicates a great outdoor campaign. 14

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.
