Fashion So Hot it Sizzles! It’s time again for high fashion to come to the BVI for the annual Summer Sizzle. This year’s star-studded event includes appearances by The Young and The Restless’ Eva Marcille and pop songstress Jessica Jarrell, plus models from around the region and the world. The weekend of glamour and style begins – in true island hospitality style – with food. A Taste of the BVI is the theme of the welcome party set for Thursday, July 20 at Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay. Tickets are $60 per person and include dinner, a welcome drink, and the chance to mix and mingle with the models and designers participating in Summer Sizzle. Beach fashion is the focus on Friday, July 21st at the BVI Swim show at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, hosted by Jessica and the BVI’s own B’More. At the swim show, expect to see swimwear and resort wear from BVI designers like Andrea Wilson and her Islander Collection, and Nadia Winter and Natalya Thomas’ Duo Collection. International designers like Shernicia May-

ers from St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Haus of Pink Lemonaid from Los Angeles; and Roger Gary of Aqua Couture will also show off swim and resort looks ahead of the event’s private pool party. Regular tickets cost $20, VIP tickets cost $60, and VIP plus pool party tickets cost $100. Which pool hosts the after party? You’ll have to buy tickets to find out because the location is top-secret. Eva takes over hosting duties for Saturday’s Global Glamour Runway Show, which will include looks by designers from around the world including LA designer Anthony Franco, TAAK, Puerto Rico’s Miriam Budet, Cesar Galindo, and the BVI’s Akeem Stanley. The show will also include a special kids’ fashion segment with young models strutting the runway in looks by 9-year-old designer Sapphire Autumn Rose. Tickets range from $30-$150 depending on seating. The event ends with a special chartered day sail, complete with a beach BBQ and a visit to the territory’s most visited National Park, The Baths. Tickets cost $100. Get your tickets for all the Summer Sizzle events at Hazem’s Beauty Supply, UMI, Bolo’s, Island Roots, Bob’s Gas, Sensus Health Club, JBY or Body Glam on Tortola. OMG – Our Music Group This is a Roll Call! OMG? Check! Our Music Group (OMG) is comprised of seasoned veterans to the music business. Some of the group’s members have worked on some of the biggest stages and with some of the biggest names in the business. The band members are Elmo “Ricky” Connor, Dante “Pascal” Wattley, Jevaughn “JJ” Parsons, Mario Frigo, Tremaine Daley and Marcus Mark. To recap you on the history of the group; Ricky contacted Dante to help with the band knowing he had recently left Volume. At the time the band was named Caution Band. Dante suggested that the band needed a fresh new name and fresh new start. The members put their heads together and came up with the acronym OMG (Our Music Group). OMG believes to become a successful band you first have to have a love of music. Any fame and money can only follow that love afterward. The band recognizes that they are role models for the younger generation, and strive to paint a positive public image. The music group also demands a level of respect when it comes to their music be cause they are ambassadors for the country. For Festival 2017 OMG will release their studio album next week, July 28th, in the CCT Parking Lot from 6–10pm. Not only will OMG perform but attendees can enjoy entertainment from B’More, Drastic, DJ Birch, and 2Xotic Troupe. Caribbean Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Cellars will also be there with drink samples and if you haven’t signed up for OMG J’ouvert Troupe you can also do so at the album release party. The event is free. Made in the Virgin Islands An Suh is the name of their new album and it will feature genres such as Groovy Soca, Zouk and, of course, Up-Tempo. The band said the inspiration for their songs comes from real life experiences, observations of what happens around them and also their personal lives. Current singles Ben-Dover and Roll Call will also be featured on the album. Roll Call in particular, is OMG’s way of recognizing the various groups in the BVI that support their events. Baby Names, 2017 I’m sure your curiosity is piqued, just reading the title. Who hasn’t been curious (well, maybe a lot of you) when it comes to favorite baby names of the hereand-now? Expectant mothers will especially wonder since the choices seem endless. When I named my own children, all three came about in a different manner. My eldest’s full name is Neil Young (I was married to a ‘Young’ at that time). I’d always liked the name Neil, so it just seemed a natural choice. Now, as an adult himself, he loves the name, and has an affinity for the other Neil Young, the musician. My son follows him and his conscious-type music. My daughter Courtlyn never particularly liked her name, though I, of course, did. We shortened it to CC very early on, and she’s never gone back. Colin, my youngest, actually has a first name of ‘Carsten’ but for whatever reason, we switched it up and he continues to go by his middle name. Getting creative with baby-naming is fun, though can be challenging to the less-thanimaginative. Trendy names abound, traditional names pop back up, and biblical names are on the re11

surgence as well. All that really should apply when making the decision is what suits you, your partner, and the upcoming newborn. Ok, I Googled it. Yes, I did. The most common for girls are: Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella, and Sophia. For boys, they’re: Liam, Noah, Mason, Lucas, and Oliver. (Personally, I feel it’s time to shake it up!) I suppose going along with the mainstream is okay, but my personal tastes would tend to favor more unique names, while keeping them easy to pronounce and spell. I love a name that can help a child connect their roots. As a teacher I encounter all the name trends, one of my favorite things parents do is name their children in an ancestral language. One memorable student was called Senuah, which means ‘warrior’ in an African dialect; while another, Tsehaya, was named for a traditional word for ‘sunshine.’ I consider both names truly lovely; even if they didn’t roll off the tongue right away. In the long run, the most important thing to remember that your child will have to live with the name you chose, so go easy on them. Get a little crazy, get creative, but keep in mind they will be the ones living with what you’ve chosen, for time everlasting. Vol. 29, 47 l July 20 - July 26, 2017

Why am I attracting the wrong people? It’s a question many of us ask: he seems so nice, why does he always end up with the wrong girl? Or maybe we have comforted a friend over and over again and we wonder why is she always ends up in this situation. Let’s start by look at why we attract the wrong people into our romantic: Being too open and trusting. You believe in the goodness of people and you ignore warning signs, or you look beyond the red flags for the hidden angel in those you meet. You expect the world to be fair and people to treat you as you treat them. Being drawn to drama. You are turned on by the cycle of break-up and make-up and you like bad boys or wild girls. You crave adventure and a steady relationship seems boring to you. Being a people pleaser. Somehow, you got the message that nice persons should always say yes and that taking care of your own needs is selfish, so you give your all to others and deny your own desires, and as fast as you give and give, they take and take. Having poor boundaries. You don’t tell people when they hurt you, but instead allow yourself to be a martyr and sink into the victim role. You hardly stand up for yourself, a trait that some predator-type persons recognize very quickly and know how to exploit gradually. While all the reasons start with you, that doesn’t make you a bad person. You have just developed a set of attitudes or behaviors that attract the wrong persons. Changing the way you see yourself will change your behavior and the

signals you send out. Of course, we all want to be warm and approachable, but we don’t want to send a message that says “use me” or “abuse me.” Here are some ways to discourage toxic people from latching on to you: Trust your instinct. If your gut feeling tells you that someone is trouble, they probably are. Move slowly with the interactions and observe the way the person behaves: How open and honest are they? How do they talk about and treat others? When you see certain signs, run. Love and accept yourself. You do not need anyone to be complete or fulfilled. Others may add to your life, but never think that anyone else’s love can replace self-love. If you don’t love yourself, you’ll be needy and the wrong person could take advantage of that. Stop trying to fix people. A relationship is not a project. If the person is truly damaged, offer to refer them to a counselor or offer them prayers. Getting involved with them is not the solution because before you know it, you’ll be their punching bag or their bank. Set firm boundaries. It is nice to be generous and helpful, but don’t be a dumping ground or a doormat. Limit how much time, money and self you can give to any one person. We all have issues that make us vulnerable. Get help if your past experiences that have left you broken, so that you can heal and have a good relationship with yourself and with others. When we can be strong, positive and confident we’re far more likely to attract like-minded individuals.

Crashing the ‘Unbeaten Party’ There’s something I’d like to know. Who is responsible for failing to inform Mega Guns that the basketball game between the unbeaten Legs and the unbeaten Virgin Gorda Mystics didn’t go off as scheduled on Sunday, July 9 because there were no available referees to call the game, and, that the game was called off at 10:45 p.m. and rescheduled to Friday, July 14? Didn’t anyone listen to any of my radio sports reports? Seemingly, Mega Guns thought it was fitting that since the Legs vs Mystics game didn’t go off as schedule, they should have been invited to the unbeaten party, even though they had already lost to Legs earlier in the season. Clearly, it would seem, no one bothered to inform Ray Victor, who had a 22 points 11 rebounds 11 assists triple double in leading six players in double digits, the importance of reading the memo that the Mega Guns’ 113-104 Wednesday night triumph, would crash the BVI Basketball Federation Legs vs Mystics unbeaten party plans. Never mind that the Mystics’ Killven Samuel showed up with a game high 37 and seven assists, because Tavon Phillips of Mega Guns, was declared ‘Deputy Chairman of the Boards’ after his 13 rebounds to go with 18 points for his doubledouble, figures that supported Victor’s triple-double. But, the real “Chairman of the Boards” was the Mystics’ Shamarr George, with 16 rebounds and 14 points. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

14

Perhaps the Mega Guns did not realize that inflicting a ninepoint loss on the Mystics would fuel such a rage, that by Friday night, they would systematically unravel hapless Legs, 102-83, handing them their first loss of the season. The party mood had now been really foiled. “The game wasn’t on my mind like it was last week,” said Legs’ coach Ronnie “Gola” Norman of his team’s loss to the Mystics. “To be honest, I didn’t expect to lose, not to a team that only came with six men.” To make matters even worse, Mega Guns wasn’t done. They threw a dagger in the heart of Legs with a thrilling Sunday night 99-98 victory. Right after that, Go Hard cut the Mystics down from their high by inflicting a 94-86 setback. So, in just three games last week, both former unbeaten Legs and Mystics—who had the Multipurpose Complex nicely arranged for their unbeaten party—were 1-2, after sailing through the league at 4-0 and 3-0 respectively. “It was a good game straight through and honestly, they hustled on the boards,” Mystics’ coach Richie Morton said of their nine-point loss to Mega Guns. “They got a lot of second chances and we didn’t capitalize on that. It was tight towards the end of the game until we made three back to back turnovers and that’s what cost us the game—turnovers.” That’s how the unbeaten basketball party was crashed!

Daily Sudoku: Wed 19-Jul-2017

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.
