Join the Festival Fun You might think that the best way to enjoy August Monday is to find a shady spot to sit while watching the parade, but that’s not true. The real secret is to find a spot in a parade troupe. This year will be my third time in the August Monday Parade (and my second with the Tortola Dance Project — hey ladies!), which tells you that the experience is worth repeating. Here are my top six reasons why: 1. The view: Being “on de road” offers the best people watching. You get to see the other parade participants while you wait around for things to get moving, and then you get to see everybody who’s watching along the route once the parade gets under way. 2. Camaraderie: The best way to join the parade is with a lively friend, but even if you don’t know the folks in your troupe, you’re sure to bond quickly and make a few in short order. I’m still friendly with some of the people I met in my first parade back in 2011. 3. Photos: My fellow social media junkies will have already noticed this one. After festival time the fabulous new profile pictures pop up and Facebook fills up with photo albums from the parade. Since all the territory’s best photograLimin’Times Entertainment Gude

phers work the event, you’re bound to wind up with several flattering shots of you and your friends. 4. Vibes: Over the years I’ve noticed that whether the troupe is filled with disciplined performers, casual “freestylers,” or the members of a community service organization, band or sports group, the folks that care enough to form a troupe and show up on parade day are a positive bunch. Even if a day on my feet in the sun leaves me a bit worn out, the positive vibes leave me feeling uplifted for days afterward. 5. Music: Every year artists from around the region put out new music especially for the various Caribbean fetes. On parade day, between the DJs and the bands that play in the parade, you get to hear mixes, covers and originals curated by music industry professionals. If you love to dance like I do, it’s a great education on the season’s best tunes. 6. Wardrobe: Being in a troupe is the perfect excuse to get out your beads, bedazzle your jeans, customize your t-shirt, and generally bling up. It’s probably too late at this point to get a feathered headdress for this year’s festivities, but hey, there’s always next year! 6

SPOTLIGHT This Week’s Story by By Laura Thomas V.I.B.E – For the Fans

What happens when longtime musicians get together and decide they want to do more than make great music; they want to promote their hometown too? For the members of Virgin Islands Based Entertainment, or VIBE, the answer is that they win their first two Road March competitions. Most of VIBE’s members left other bands in search of something more significant, explained manager Roger Frank. “The members wanted to create something that would be capable of representing the BVI and a name that is marketable internationally, and VIBE was born,” he said. The band plans to bring their signature high energy, multi-genre influenced and synthesizer driven sound back to the Road March competitions this year and make it a three-peat. VIBE members are vocalists Raul “Jougo” Sprauve, Renrick “Mac Daddy” Massac, and Tiejie “TJ” Henley; keyboardist Kerry “Fingers” Nichols; drum machine programmer LeeSean “Smudge” Smith; bassist Zolan “Zo” Browne; guitarist Glen “Damager” Lamothe; and engineer Ramon Sprauve. The band’s wide-ranging musical influences cover nearly every genre of music. As Jougo would say, “Donde mi Latina Familia (where is my Latin Family)… “They with me tonight”, TJ would reply. Off-stage, the band is a close-knit family who meet twice weekly for practice, to discuss band business and ideas, or just to hang out. This Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

strong unit never forgets a band member’s birthday or fails to support one another. With an incredible fan base the band says they feel a lot of fan love and support. “It’s only right that we reciprocate the love by dedicating a song to our devoted fans titled Fans. Fans acknowledges our gratitude for the dedication of our listeners.” Eat Ya Heart Out is another single from the band’s 2016 album, which talks about how social media can unite fans. “Don’t catch no feelings” as Jougo would say. “Fans constantly trend topics related to their everyday issues in life. We used this to create a track,” Frank said. Body Language, (which, by the way, is my favorite) is dedicated to Caribbean women that enjoy whining and losing themselves in the music. VIBE’s future goal is to bring more positive attention to the territory through its music. Despite the challenges, Roger says the band will continue to excel with hopes that eventually they will be able to travel to and tour in the United States. However, in the mean time you can see the band perform at various festival events (see our festival guide on page 11). You can catch up with V.I.B.E on their Instagram page: vibe284, Facebook: VIBE and listen to their music on Soudcloud: V.I.B.E. (Be VI).

Husband caught Watching Porn

Ask Koren

My husband recently retired and seems to be bored because twice I came home and found he had left his computer on porn sites. We are Christians who go to church every week, but we are not active in the church. Should I be bothered by his viewing choices when he has a real, live woman in the house with him? My other worry is, after looking, what will be his next move? – Agitated Dear Agitated Wife, Have you considered that maybe he deliberately left the computer on that page so you could find it and therefore a discussion could be started? Haha…that’s a discussion for another time. Seriously though, your husband could be looking at these sites out of a recent curiosity or boredom, or it is possible he has been looking for a while and you only just found out. Either way, there are many men who use these sites as a means of enhancing their relationships by learning new things and experimenting with their partners. The best way to know how it is affecting the relationship is to consider if his technique has improved, if he is suggesting new ideas, or if he seems more excited. If his desire towards you has waned or his advances have lessened, then that tells a different story. If there are no changes, that too says something. I hope you were not snooping on his computer so that you can comfortably just tell him you saw what he is looking at and ask him what’s up with that. Yes, some people do use the viewing of porn as a stepping-stone to something else, but quite often, that is not the case. If you are so inclined,

you could make an effort to spice things up a bit and create some variety and excitement, so that even if you are not interested in what he is watching, at least you know that department of your marriage is well taken care of. As to how his behavior affects his Christianity, it could be problematic if he is neglecting other more spiritual pursuits to focus on that, or if he’s looking at unsuitable things that could build some animalistic tendencies. As it relates to your marriage, it is more important to focus on how good your relationship is. If all is well, then don’t make mountains out of molehills. Just use this experience to start a dialogue about that aspect of your relationship. Keep me posted!

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Amid Adversity – McMaster’s Run Historic Samuels said it was unfortunate that McMaster was unable to train properly or compete at even a single outdoor meet, as he was plagued with excruciating pain between January and May. “When he returned home, immediately we went to work. The first task was getting him healthy and while doing so, have him compete to achieve the qualifying standard for the World Jr. Championships,” Samuels explained. “With that being accomplished it became a matter of TLC to his injury, but at the same time enforcing the daily work and that was a crafty task. We knew that he was capable of running 49 but we had to be patient and wait. After the first round, we knew two things — he would medal and secondly he would run 49. And he accomplished both. Kyron is a talented but hard worker, a coach’s dream. His goals are very high and he pursues his endeavor daily and with zeal.” McMaster said being out of collegiate competition affected him badly, and being released from Central Arizona before being able to compete outdoors put him into a different zone. He had to strive and become more focused. “People would say getting released from Central Arizona would have a negative impact, but getting released was probably the best thing because it showed me how to work, achieve my goal and don’t take anything for granted,” he said. “Getting the bronze medal and running 49.56 just seals the deal that a lot of people are after me. Off the top of my head, Florida, Georgia, UTEP, Nebraska and South Carolina have all shown interest so far.”

Kyron McMaster became the territory’s first medalist in its 30-year history of IAAF World Jr. Championships competition, Saturday when he claimed the bronze for his performance in the 400m hurdles race in Bydgoszcz, Poland. His time of 49.56 seconds was a personal best and national

Kyron McMaster record. Through early May, McMaster wasn’t thinking about World Juniors. As a student at Central Arizona, he won the Jr. Colleges Indoor 400m title in March, but missed the outdoor season after doctors told him not to run because of a lower back stress fracture. “Not being able to compete outdoors really affected me,” he said. “When I came home, my coach [Dag Samuels] began working with me. We had a meeting and he said, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s go World Juniors.’ And I said ‘Coach, you know the situation.’ At that moment, I couldn’t run. Within a week, Coach worked on me, got me to the point where I could be able to train, then to the point where I could compete and then qualify, so he played an important role and I thank him for that.” Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
