Dr. Patricia Turnbull Educator, researcher and author Dr. Patricia Turnbull is one of the BVI’s foremost literary artists. After a career that has seen her producing original work in a variety of genres including scholarly essays; poetry; and the ground-breaking Can These Stones Talk?, a history of Kingstown village in Tortola, it was the urging of her colleagues and supporters that pushed her to create her first children’s book. “People had always been asking me about writing something for the children,” she said recently. Taking inspiration from walks out in nature with her grandchildren, Dr. Turnbull came up with a the poetic tale of Ti Koko and Kush Kush. Ti Koko is a coconut palm seedling growing in the idyllic Garden Bay. When their mini-Eden is struck by an unexpected destructive force, Kush Kush the yam provides guidance and comfort to the little coconut palm. The book is illustrated with lively images by BVI artist Reuben Vanterpool. When she wrote the book, she had in mind manmade disasters like development that clears and deLimin’Times Entertainment Guide
stroys natural beauty around small island nations including the BVI. “When we looked around, we noticed that hillsides would disappear. They were excavated,” she said. Then Irma happened. The storm pushed back the printing of her book, but it also made the story relevant for kids who had been through the storm in a whole new way, since many of them can now easily identify with Ti Koko’s tragedy. “It was right on time with how we were dealing with that trauma,” she said of the book. With its empowering message for kids, the story will likely be a source of comfort for little ones still processing the large-scale destruction that came along with the storm. Because of its rhythm, Dr. Turnbull also hopes the book will help young readers discover an appreciation of poetry. “I think the young people I read to are so caught up in the story they don’t notice the poetry,” she said, “I hope that they will enjoy it.” You can get a copy of Ti Koko & Kush Kush on Tortola at J&C Traders or Mellow Moods, or online from Amazon or SPD Books. 4
BVI Culture Week It’s that time again for BVI Culture and Heritage Week! Why do we have this event every year? Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn explains: “The history of the Virgin Islands would show that the men and women who built this territory understood the importance of community, culture and faith in facing the challenges encountered throughout the early years of our existence. They worked hard and remained resilient, and ultimately created a Virgin Islands that we could all be proud of today,” the minister said in his message to launch the week’s activities. “Virgin Islands Culture and Heritage Week provides us all with an opportunity to reflect on the foundation on which this Territory was built, while inspiring a new generation of Virgin Islanders — our young people — to stand on the very same values on which our forefathers stood many years ago. Values like honesty and integrity, being our neighbor’s keeper, and doing whatever we could to ensure community development was the way in which we lived,” the minister said.

Culture week runs from November 11th–17th under the theme, “Celebrate our past, inspire our future.” Community and school-based activities are planned throughout the week to stimulate and encourage the transmission of Virgin Islands culture, with a special focus on events and circumstances in history that have been influential in making the territory what it is today. School activities will highlight centenarians and other culture keepers who paved the way for future generations such as Mrs. Jennie Wheatley and Mr. Elmore Stoutt. Tomorrow (Friday) the annual food fair will be held at the Central Administration Complex Courtyard from 10am-4pm. In addition to tasting local dishes, catch live performances by Marcus Mark and Zion Sounds. Have a piece of BVI cultural attire in your closet? Join the rest of the community in showing off your BVI pride tomorrow by wearing it, especially if you’re attending the food fair.

Politically, the Virgin Islands is a territory of the United Kingdom, but we all know that this place as a heritage and culture all its own. Highlighting this unique culture is why officials created Culture and Heritage Week, being celebrated this week, but it’s far from the only thing that’s been done to promote the culture. For example, did you know that the BVI has a whole series of symbols and signs that are all its own? I got to attend the unveiling of the series back in 2013, where it was explained that these symbols were selected to reflect the history and identity of the BVI as its own entity, rather than highlighting its connection to the Mother Country as the national anthem (God Save the Queen) and flag already do. So, what are these special BVI symbols? Territorial Song: Oh Beautiful Virgin Islands. This one was actually the first of the territorial symbols chosen, back in 2012. If you don’t know it, ask any schoolchild to sing it for you. They always sing it beautifully whenever I get to attend a school assembly or other function. Territorial Colors: There are five of them, each representing a different important aspect of Virgin Islands identity. Yellow represents the rising sun; Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

green represents the lush hillsides; blue reflects the sea; white reflects the sandy beaches; and red represents the fiery personalities of the people. Territorial Food: Fish and Fungi. Chosen because of the rich fishing heritage in the territory, the BVI Food Fete has incorporated the dish into some of its events, such as recent Taste of Tortola competitions. Territorial Music: Fungi music. This one is hard to describe, but if you haven’t heard this style performed in person, you should catch a Razor Blades performance as soon as possible. There may be fewer folks performing fungi music regularly these days, but until a few years ago it was celebrated annually at a Fungi Festival. Territorial Tree: White cedar. Also the territorial flower, this one was chosen because it is native to the territory, and because its lumber made it possible to build the Tortola Sloop, a distinctive sailing vessel that kept early Virgin Islanders in the shipping business. Territorial Gift: a small model of the traditional Tortola Sloop. These haven’t been mass produced yet, but the one unveiled at that Territory Day celebration along with the other symbols was a gorgeous polished wood miniature made by Geoffrey Brooks, who wrote the book on Tortola Sloops.

Light, Camera, Action; Part 2 Chapter 17: Invisible Connections
Jazz We are now in week three of my case and I’m still trying to figure out why my lawyer didn’t request my case to be thrown out for wasting the court time. I just don’t see what Shelly thinks she has to gain doing something like this. The only thing they could hope to get on me is sleeping with someone else’s husband, but that’s not what I’m on trial for. I’m still so grateful to have a friend like Bella. She’s been by my side since day one even though I can see she is going through something herself, even if so far she hasn’t wanted to talk about it. She puts up a strong front, but I can read her like a book. I have a feeling it has to do with Pierre. Man problems will wear a girl out.
Pierre This dating transgender persons group has been very supportive and informational. I’ve learned about the trans life, I’ve also met incredible persons with amazing stories and how their life changed with a transgender person. I’m not saying that Bella and I will get back to the dating stage. I’ll need to learn how to trust her and not be so paranoid wondering whether every person I come in contact with has gone through a transition. My parents have been asking for Bella. I skirted the breakup by telling them about her friend Jazz and that she’s busy going to the court with her, which did 11
get them to back off a bit. Now I know they’re following the case and that they’re sure to ask about her again when it’s over. Since Jazz is pretty well known in the fashion world, the case has been a high-profile one. I knew Jazz through Bella and she has always been kind to me. If she’s not fond of me I can’t tell you because I’ve never seen a bad face from her. I’m rooting for her.
Kevin After work today I headed straight to my cheap motel room to freshen up. I heard a knock on my door and, when I saw the sexy thing in front of me, I moved to the side and let her in. I’m a dog, I know, but a man like me can’t just have one side chick. Women have mood swings and I always have to be prepared for a rainy day. I’ve called on this particular lady on and off for years, but because she was married and lived in another city, we don’t meet up often. You see Shelly was a lot like me, only sleeping with men who can help her get ahead. Hard as it might be to believe, I didn’t learn her husband was Jazz’s dad until we’d been doing our thing for a long time, when a family picture fell out of her bag. I never let on I was also sleeping with Shelly’s stepdaughter, and I figured she didn’t know a thing about it. I never realised I was so deep in thought until I heard Shelly say “Earth to Kevin.” Vol. 30, 32 / Nov 15 - Nov 21, 2018

Chappy Made Top Regional Umpire On October 31, BVI Softball Association Chief Umpire, Glenford “Chappy” Maduro, was appointed as Director of Umpires for the English Speaking Caribbean Amateur Softball Confederation (ECASC). “Being in this position, I will have to do some training in terms of the different English speaking countries and getting them prepared to become certified,” Maduro explained. “Once they complete the online tests, the mechanics, field organization and the likes, I can certify them off that.” He said certified umpires are rare in the region. “When it comes to the Virgin Islands on a whole, Bobby Thomas, who was just elected Senator in St. Thomas and I, were certified in 2002. In the BVI we have Shane Freeman, Faith Maduro-Powell and Avery Percival, who has taken a break from umpiring. We have some certified umpires in Aruba, Curacao and Belize. I’ve been contacted by St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands, to come and work with them. Jamaica doesn’t have any and Anguilla is not up to date with their affiliation fee.” Maduro would like to see 30-40 trained umpires in the region. He will focus on bringing in more women since women’s softball is back in the Olympic Games and the ISF is interested in women officiating the Olympic Games.
Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
“They would like to see a lot more women coming out and being interested in officiating games,” he noted. “I don’t know of any in the English speaking Caribbean, only in Latin America.” When asked what it means to be in the position, Maduro said it’s a privilege and an honor. He thanked former Sports Officer Patrick Harrigan for bringing Arthur Thompson from the Bahamas to qualify more International Softball Federation certified umpires. “After he brought Mr. Thompson, I qualified to go along with Cynthia Martin, Dickie Davis and Hanbrock Mercer, but they were not successful in being ISF umpires,” he noted. “Hanbrock, he got regional certification but he has bowed out of umpiring.” Maduro said international rules are changing constantly and he’d like to see umpires keeping abreast. “They want to know you look professional on the field—your dress, actions and signs,” he said. “I’d like to see umpires on a whole practice their mechanics and their rotation. Once they do that, it would be easier for them to become certified. When you’re out there looking shabby with your signs, it causes confusion and they don’t want that.”
