This Week’s Feature Story By Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel
Lovers’ Rock on De Rock
Beres Hammond, the reggae powerhouse behind hits like “Groovy Little Thing,” “Tempted to Touch” and “I Feel Good,” will be back on Tortola this Saturday, November 26th, bringing his distinctive voice to the Festival Village Grounds in Road Town. The 61-year-old singer’s career spans back to the 1970s when he was the frontman of the band Zap Pow in his native Jamaica. His first solo album, Soul Reggae, was released in 1976. By the 1980s, Beres came into his own, forming his own record label, Harmony Records, and releasing Make a Song in 1985. The album’s “What One Dance Can Do,” became an international hit in the 1990s. The also ‘90s saw Beres’ fame growing with the release of international hits “Tempted to Touch,” and “Is This a Sign.” He released seven albums between 1992 and 1998, and his soulful voice and the romantic vibes of his music earned him the nickname “The Love Doctor.” The new millennium didn’t slow Beres down, and 2001’s Music Is Life included hits like “They Gonna Talk” and “Rockaway.” He followed up in 2002 with a Music Is Life DVD.

In 2012, Beres’ double album One Love, One Life reached the top spot on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, and critics called it the best album of the singer’s long career. In recognition of his contributions to the musical culture of his native country, Beres received the Order of Jamaica in 2013. Described by some as “ageless,” the singer continues to give high-energy performances and to sell-out shows. Asked about the longevity of his career in a recent interview with New York’s On Stage, Beres said good management is key. “You have to understand that you’re also a product and you have to sell yourself… I managed to do that for a period and it’s paid off,” he said. “You have to be serious about it, and you have to be careful what you say upon the mic. Money is not the whole thing.” General admission is $40 with advance purchase, more at the door. VIP admission is $125. Get your tickets online at stubzbvi.com, on Tortola at Swag Crew, Hazem’s Beauty Supply or Bolo’s, or on Virgin Gorda at Speedy’s.

Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude especially to God. I am thankful because I have the breath of life and the means to live. I’m thankful that I wake up daily in paradise and, although we have our share of problems, it’s still one of the safest places to live relative to the rest of the world. Although Thanksgiving is an American holiday, with something similar celebrated in Canada in the month of October, many families and businesses in the BVI have adopted the tradition as well. My family is no different. For the last 10 years we have been celebrating Thanksgiving with a big family dinner. We gather, feast, give thanks and have a great time. What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? It’ll probably be too late to plan a turkey lunch by time you get this issue, but you might still have time to think about Thanksgiving Dinner. Here are few places you could visit for a special holiday meal: • The Rock Café, Virgin Gorda has a $55 allinclusive dinner. On the menu is Kale Salad with Cranberry, Roasted Pumpkin Soup, and oven roasted Turkey and pumpkin cheesecake, the regular menu will still be available. For reservations please call 495-5482 or by emailing rockcafevg@gmail.com. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Relationship
Dear Koren, My boyfriend had treated me really badly for the three years we were together and then we broke up. He spent three months begging to get me back and finally started doing everything I ever wanted in those times, so I decided I would take him back just to let him get comfortable and then do something really hurtful to him so that he could see how I felt. My plan isn’t working, though. Now that we are back together, my love for him is stronger than ever and that wasn’t the plan. Should I just leave him before I get hurt? –Confused Dear confused, These kinds of games have no winners because here you are planning to hurt someone and the satisfaction you think you will feel, if you have a conscience at all, it won’t come. You will probably look in the mirror and wonder who you really are. Do not bring yourself down to his level. If he hurt you for so long, that means that something was not right with him. For you to deliberately do it says something about you, too. Do not let that experience change you for the worse. If you choose to forgive your partner, you won’t forget what he did, but you will allow him to prove himself a changed man and not fake a relationship. If he keeps messing up, then you know what you have to do. If you have not forgiven him, then just let him go and try to move on. Clearly, you still have feelings for him, hence the reason why your plan is not working. As it
stands now, it’s an unhealthy relationship because you are in it for the wrong reasons and he is being fooled. I think you need to take a closer look at your feelings and consider whether you can truly forgive him; whether you will be able to trust him again; what you really want for yourself and whether you can find it with him. After you’ve thought through all that, then make a decision, trying as much as possible to be genuine, honorable and kind. You do deserve to be happy and it would not be bad if you choose to forgive him and live in love.
Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

McMaster clears another hurdle tacting me were: LSU, Clemson, Texas A&M, El Paso, Tennessee and Florida.” He added: “It was a hard task at the end when you have a lot of people throwing different things at you. Choosing Florida was what I basically wanted in the first place. I always told my coach that I wanted to sign early, because despite how many people throw things at me and different scenarios what they can offer better than Florida, I knew I wanted to go to Florida from the get go, so I decided to go with that dream and stay with Florida. But, it was a hard decision.” Florida also has the best two NCAA 400m Hurdlers, and Olympic champion Kerron Clement trains there, Mc Master noted. It’s also where the US Virgin Islands’ 110m Hurdler Eddie Lovett matriculated. “Florida has a really good hurdles program so in terms of getting me better and getting me to that next stage, Florida would be the one to do it,” he said. In retrospect, McMaster sees the silver lining. He went from getting injured, to winning a historic medal for the territory, and now has the opportunity to compete at one of the top collegelevel programs. “People would say getting released from Central Arizona would have a negative impact,” he said. “But getting released was probably the best thing because it showed me how to work, achieve my goal, and don’t take anything for granted. I used the injury as motivation because I had a goal at the beginning of the season to medal at World Jrs. After coming home, we stuck with the goal and made it possible.”
With several South Eastern Conference powerhouses seeking his services, Kyron McMaster, the BVI’s first IAAF World Jr. Championships medalist who won a 400m Hurdle bronze in July, signed a letter of intent to join the Florida Gators last McMaster & Samuels Wednesday. McMaster, 19, was a second semester freshman at Central Arizona College when he won the 400m Jr. Colleges Indoor Championships in March. Soon after, he was injured and released by the school before he had a chance to represent them in any outdoor track and field events. It was a dark time for McMaster, who even considered quitting. The intense lower back pain affected his every move. He could barely walk, much less run. He’d call his father and coach Dag Samuels on a daily basis, reporting that there was no improvement and that he wanted to come home. He missed his last Carifta Games in Grenada over the Easter Weekend and didn’t compete till May in Florida, where he qualified for World Jrs. In all, he competed in six races outdoors—finishing five of them including winning the 400m bronze. “The offers came in literally after I crossed the finish line and got the bronze medal,” he revealed after overcoming adversity. “Mr. McMaster, I want a word with you please, literally after the line. I had a lot of offers. The major ones conLimin’Times Entertainment Gude
