Santa At The Bay After seeing what the devastating 2017 hurricanes caused to Dominica and the British Virgin Islands, Mark and Tracey Duckett founded the Sailing Santa – Kids of the Caribbean Campaign, providing gifts to over 200 children in 2017 alone. In 2018, with determination to make the campaign bigger and better, they raised enough funds to purchase 700 gifts. Unsure on how to deliver the presents, they contacted Feed My Sheep (FMS) Youth & Crisis Center in Dominica who were responsible for providing to over 3000 persons annually.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

The Sailing Santa Campaign is more than about gifts – it’s about hope, joy and kindness at a time when it’s needed most. This year is the 2nd Annual Santa at the Bay with Sailing Santa at Trellis Bay Market Bar & Grill. On Saturday, 21st, bring the children out out for presents from 3–5pm. There will be bouncy castles, Ice Treats, Ice Cream and much more. Entertainment will be provided by Young Money Soundz. For more information, please visit Sailing Santa on Facebook @ sailingsanta or w w w. s a i l i n g santa.com to donate or learn more about their efforts.

A mother and wife, Nardia Thomas-Mather established Nads Savory Delights in 2017, drawing inspiration from her late mom Mrs. Dorise Thomas-Maduro and her love for cooking. Nardia is known for creating her own BBQ sauces – Apple Crown Royal, Hennessy, Cruzan Confusion, Passion Fruit and Tamarind – just to name a few, and loves spending time in the kitchen manipulating and creating exotic dishes for her family and clients. She’s also well known for her Alligator meat dishes – Gator Alfredo, Gator Kabob and Gator Bites. Crawfish, Alaskan King Crabs and Lobster are also on her menu. Her all-time favorite dish to prepare are her famous wings as she loves working with her many sauces.

9

When asked about challenges she experienced in the course of her business, she readily told Limin’ Times about that one time she had to work under tremendous pressure. “My first year on Christmas on Decastro Street 2017, just after Hurricane Irma was a very testing year, even though I was new to that particular public event, I still had my followers who expected a certain quality of service and food from me but with my team I managed to produce my dishes at a standard of my approval.” In five years Nardia hopes to see Nadz Savory Delights expanded throughout the BVI. You can see more of her dishes by on her Facebook Page @Nadz Savory Delights and she can be booked by calling (284) 543-1936.

Quality Over Quantity I don’t recall ever hearing anyone say, ‘I don’t care how bad it is, just give me plenty of it”. Many of us want a lot of money, but we don’t want stolen money or illegally gotten gains. We want to enjoy our food, but we would rather a medium size plate of an exquisitely tasty meal than a large plate of tasteless and bland food; and I’ve heard so many times, that many persons would prefer to have a small core group of loyal, trustworthy and genuine friends, than a large number of people around them that they can’t trust and who are not dependable. The minimalists discovered this some time ago and have learned to exist with a smaller amount of good things. The greater the amount of something, does not translate to better and most of us have already realized that. When we were younger, we wanted a lot of toys and our parents probably just bought us one

17

good long-lasting toy or a sturdy pair of shoes and we were not happy; but now we understand why. ust this summer, in buying school things, I noticed a box of 24 inferior looking crayons at a particular price, while the better-quality ones for the same price only had 12. Clearly, the 12 would have lasted longer. As we are entering the Christmas season, let us remember to put quality ahead of quantity. This can apply to the gifts we buy, the parties and concerts we choose to attend and even how we eat. In some cases, quantity and quality together make things a lot more “wow”!! Think of sleep and hugs and love and music and you have a perfect combo. Work towards that, but in the event that you can’t have both… consider how quality would be a lot more enjoyable and lasting and ensure that you make the right choice.

Devious Minds Chapter 9

It was a hot summer Friday night and the crew was on top of their favorite abandoned building drinking and eating pizza. After a hard week at work, the friends decided to just relax and catch the fresh night air. Clubbing was not something they did often as they would rather stick to themselves. “So b!tches, tell me, what’s the latest with ya’ll, any juicy details?” a half drunk Theresa asked her friends. “Girl! Sit yo drunk ass down. We live in the same building and see each other every day,” Diamond told her. “Oh! You miss Diamond, tell me everything, how has life been for the quick second you changed your look and why did you change back,” Theresa asked Diamond. A few weeks ago Diamond went and got a makeover. Not only did she change her wardrobe, she also got her hair straightened and coloured. When she got in on work Monday, she got a few double looks from some of the people in her building and even some who recognized it was her, gave her compliments. The day was going great until she overheard 2 of her coworkers saying that she “looked ridiculous”, asking who she was trying to get and whispering that she was still a nobody. The next day, Diamond arrived to work in her regular outfit but her hair was still straightened and by the night she had washed it to get back her curls. “When I got into work on Monday, most people didn’t know it was me but those who did, liked my new look – except two miserable witches. Their harsh words made me feel like something was wrong with my look so I changed back.” Diamond said. “I will deal with them and don’t tell me no because you know I will come in there and act a fool, Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

so you better tell me what their names are,” Patrick jumped up steaming from what he just heard Diamond say. “I’m going with you too so it will be both of us, Destiny said. “We are not children anymore, we will get locked up for harassment,” Diana, the goody-twoshoes chimed in. “Girl please, sit there and drink this till you come to your senses,” Theresa told her while handing her the bottle she was drinking. The group laughed. They continued to make small talk until Patrick asked, “So, besides Diamond anyone except us gave what I initiated any thought?” “Well, earlier this week, I finally grew the balls to stand up to my supervisor, and if her mouth had dropped any further on the floor, I swore it would’ve reached hell before the rest of her.” “Boy do you ever talk anything with sense? Diana asked him, while laughing at what he had just said. “Of course not, that’s why you love me so,” he responded. “Hopefully, she would start treating me like an equal adult and stop talking down to me as a child.” “So what about the rest of you? Will y’all be taking his suggestion?” Diamond asked her sisters and Theresa. “Yes, eventually,” they all said. “When the timing is right,” Diamond quipped. For the rest of the night, the friends drank and socialized. It was way after two when they got back to their condo. On Saturday, all of them were nursing a hangover causing the triplets to miss their parents lunch party. 18

Devious Minds Chapter 10

Wednesday morning’s meeting was a blur until Destiny’s coworker and confidant Elizabeth got up to speak. The reaction from her fellow colleagues made her smile but it was the person getting the praise ‘AGAIN’ that pissed her off. Once again, Destiny had confided to Elizabeth her new ideas for a program that would benefit both the students and teachers and when Elizabeth stood up to bring it to the table, she never acknowledged that Destiny was the mastermind. After the meeting she pulled her to the side to let her have it. “You know, one of these days I will make you look like a fool in front the whole staff if you continue to step on my toes to make yourself look good,” Destiny told Elizabeth. “I’m sorry you feel that way, I thought I had been doing you a favour in getting things done, don’t be mad because you don’t have the balls to speak up,” Elizabeth snapped back at her. Destiny steamed off and left her there without a word, plotting in her mind what she would do. Little did the ladies know, there was a shadow lurking nearby. ******** “Listen here you two witches, if I hear or catch y’all talking about my friend again, I will buss your a$$es up and down this strip,” Patrick hollered at 19

Diamond’s two coworkers that were bullying her outside the building. “You can’t and won’t touch any of us you lil’ &*$!” one of the ladies answered back. “I got your &*$ here b!t@&!” Patrick shouted back. Before it got physical, Diamond quickly grabbed Patrick and pulled him away. She didn’t want her friend to go to jail so she had to defuse the situation quickly. The next day when Diamond got into work, she was called to a meeting at the office. When she was asked what role she had in the fiasco yesterday, she thought about not answering, but figured it would be better if she told the truth if she was going to be fired. She informed management that both ladies had been bullying her for some time but she never reported it because they never actually touched her. She told them about their behavior towards her makeover a few weeks ago and the nasty things she overheard them saying about her. Management told her that they suspected something was going on and they reviewed security tapes for the last few months and let both the young ladies go. Diamond was given a stern warning not to bring any of her personal drama to the building, it won’t be tolerated they said. On the way back to her desk, she was stopped and told that she should change back her look, they loved it on her. That made her smile and brightened her day. Vol. 31, 36 & 37 l Dec 19 - Jan 1, 2020

Basketball Federation Spruces Up East End Clinic Days shy of his sixth month in office, BVI Basketball Federation president Dereck Varlack led executives, players and elected officials in a weekend sprucing up of the Iris Penn-Smith Clinic in East End. “It’s better to give than to receive and we’re trying to give the young people a message that this is their future, this is their country and it’s better for them to get to understand, it’s better to give than to receive,” Varlack said, hoping the initiative would teach about discipline, self-confidence and respect for the country. “We want to go forward so that they can be viewed not just as children, but adults too.” By Sunday, the group thoroughly cleaned the yard and repainted the clinic. Varlack said someone was coming in to fence the property as well. “We need to get more people involved in these kinds of projects,” Varlack stated. “Our t-Shirts say it only takes one to make a difference. By saying one can make a difference, when one can say don’t do this, it would make a difference in something.” Joining the group was Eighth District Representative, Hon. Neville “Sheep” Smith. “I’m really happy to see the Basketball Association doing this. When you look at it, you do have to do a lot more community service,” he said. “And it’s not just about basketball, but giving back and being a part of something that’s good. I really commend the youngsters who are out here doing this, because Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

it shows that togetherness.” Smith said it takes one to build a nation because when you take one, you can start adding because one and one is two and you add as you go on. “So, I’m really happy to see this,” Smith added. “I hope it goes on—not just for basketball—but all the other sports in the BVI would get together and to this. It teaches our youths that they need to give back to the community. We keep going to the community asking for sponsorship and donations and this shows we’re giving back, so I commend them.” House of Assembly Speaker Julian Willock commended President Varlack, Vice President Jason Edwin and Public Relations Officer Eustace “Boss” Freeman, for their wonderful work. “This is a very good initiative to paint the building and show that the Basketball Federation is in the community,” Willock said. “This is an extremely good initiative.” The BVI Basketball Federation has a number of plans that will be unveiled in 2020, including meeting with all the different leagues so that they don’t overlap in the future.
