BVI Christmas celebrations are what I look forward to each year. Some might argue that things have changed, and while that may be true for some, many of us still love doing things the old fashioned way. Just like in the past, you know the season is upon us when you see a major house cleaning going on. How major? Very. I’m talking the type of cleanup where suddenly old furniture is thrown out to make way for the new pieces. All this preparation can only mean that company is coming. I remember as a little girl that my aunts and mom would all gather in the kitchen baking up a storm while we kids played outside. All those goodies would later be shared with the family and friends who would come by as part of the holiday celebrations. Looking back, it makes perfect sense to celebrate this way, since in my family there are so many of us. The simplest way to party is to all gather under one roof. The unity that the holiday season brings is still a source of warmth for me. In my family, and many others around here, on Christmas Day we eat at three different homes. Each household hosts either breakfast, lunch or dinner, leaving all the members of the extended family to spend the holiday hopping from house to house. Growing up, our household was the breakfast stop. It was only after the breakfast company left that we got to Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

open a present. Notice we were limited to a single gift. Mom didn’t want the tree looking too bare before it was time to take it down. When it comes to food, the favorites were ham, cakes, freshly baked bread and tarts. The top picks for drinks are nutmeg and guavaberry rum. I don’t want any nutmeg though, pass me that guavaberry rum. As a matter of fact, if your house doesn’t have coconut tart and guavaberry rum, I’m not coming over. Another BVI tradition is the Christmas morning church service, traditionally held at 5am. Growing up, I attended the Road Town Methodist Church’s service and my favorite part has always been when the various groups would go up and give their rendition of some classic Christmas carols or hymns. Actually, I can remember sleeping through the service until the singing started. Don’t kill me, I was in my early teens, and waking a kid up at 4am to get ready for service is a complete set-up for a morning nap in the pew. Although their numbers have been declining in recent years, traditional carolers are still spreading the Christmas love. These groups of singers and musicians will roam neighborhoods beginning in the wee hours of the morning singing seasonal tunes that are usually set to fungi, a musical style native to the BVI.

Menen-I Designs You have seen her pieces on several runways including Summer Sizzle BVI, Caribbean Posh and the more recent Foxy’s Hemp Fest and Fashion Wonderland Fashion Show in St. Thomas. The brainy beauty behind Menen I Designs is Markita Smith, a wife, mother and one of our very own ascending BVI Fashion Designers. Markita has always been in love with fashion, she is a self-taught seamstress. She says the birth of Menen I Designs was when she made a custom outfit for her family for an event in 2009. Based on the response, she knew she was on to something. “I do one-of-a-kind pieces for women, anything from couture to street wear that they can wear [everyday],” said Markita. She continues “I’ve also done

a little of men and kids wear, basically anything my clients request.” What’s next for Menen I Designs, you may ask. In April 2019, Markita’s designs will be part of a showcase for the FSC Young Designer Award Presentation in the United Kingdom, and also in Guyana for the Fashion and Tea Spring Fashion Empowerment event. Also look out for their new collection coming soon. To view, purchase or keep up with Menen I Designs, you can contact Markita through any of her social media platforms. Girlfriend Takes Money From Her Ex Dear Koren, It’s time women stop referring to men as dogs and all kinds of other derogatory things because some of them are no different. I see both bad men and women and good men and women. I’m dating a lady who she has 2 children with another guy, so of course he finances the kids. I don’t have a problem with that. The problem is that the man showed up at her apartment while I was there and during an argument it came out that he has been giving her personal money. She was taking money from her ex and from me and neither of us knew that she getting from the other. Her excuse was that she was using his money to pay off an old debt she got while with him and that my money was for her current upkeep. How is this ok? – Writer Dear writer, I’m abbreviating your question here, but I think we can see your point. This reads like a soap opera. As I read it I thought, “wow, this lady is really something else.” Yes, as the father of her children, her ex should maintain them and that is perfectly normal; but here she was taking his money for herself when she was in a relationship with another man. That seemed downright questionable. However, when I read her explanation, it made perfect sense. If they accrued debts for purchases done together (travel, expenses for the children, etc.), then those debts should be their shared responsibility. I imagine that it’s just in her name so if she doesn’t pay, the bank will come after her. You helping her now because you are in a relationship with her seems voluntary. So, she is using Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

the money for her current needs. She is compartmentalizing, which is something many men do very well, so I’m surprised you don’t understand. Whenever women start taking a man’s money, it can skew the relationship because she could develop a dependence on him. In that case, if things are not going well, the lines are blurred whether she is staying to try to fix the relationship or because she has gotten used to the help. It also often changes a man’s expectations because he has a sense that she is obligated to him. As much as possible, I would tell women to try to manage without a man’s money, and that if she has to take it out of need, not to lose herself in the process. I think it is unreasonable of her ex to get upset for having a new partner. While he might assume his money is being spent on another man, all he has to do is seek clarification that it’s not. Her personal life is none of his business. As for you, you are not her husband and not allowed to control her. If you don’t want her ex to pay for the debts he probably left behind, perhaps you could offer to pay them off. Sometimes in relationships we think too much about our own feelings when we should pause to consider what might be logically sound for the other person. Sit with the lady, ask her to explain the situation and try to understand. Remember that she has to be the financial controller of her life and do what is economically sound. She is not robbing anyone or stealing… you both give willingly but it sounds like you each want more control over the woman’s choices than you really need to have. 6

Light, Camera, Action; Part 2 Chapter 20: More Revelations

Bella Jazz, Pierre and I celebrated her freedom at a bar yesterday, which wound up being her last day in court. After Shelly’s outburst, they had no choice but to throw out the case and lock Shelly up for lying and wasting the court’s time. How could someone plot to ruin someone else’s life for so long? Thank God I’ve never experience that kind of hate. Although I lost Pierre’s trust, he never hated me that bad for deceiving him. Now, it’s Saturday and Jazz and I decided to have a girl’s night in, complete with wings, pizza and ice-cream. It felt great to let go of some of the drama in our lives. I was really relaxing until Jazz blurted out that she wants to know what I’ve been going through with Pierre. She warned me not to lie because she’d noticed he’d been coming around again for a while. Jazz I was sitting there, hand on my chest, jaw on the floor. I couldn’t believe what Bella just told me. She sure as hell had me fooled! Nevertheless, she was my girl, and I’m not going to give up a friend like her. When I (eventually) caught myself, I joked that she should show me her piece. She shared that her parents had signed the document for her to have surgery done. I loved how they always supported her. It’s so sad that her Dad wasn’t around to see the greatness she had become. Her Mom stayed in an upscale nursing home in New York. She knew Bella’s career was going to blow up 11

and she would be busy so she wanted to be in a familiar city around the few friends and family she had left. I went with Bella once to visit her, very nice lady. Reminded me of my mom. Pierre After celebrating with the girls last night, I made up my mind about my next move regarding Bella. I called my parents and told them I was on the next thing out to see them. I took a few days off of work and I laid it all on the table for them. Kevin I had just got in from work and found the house quieter than usual, but I enjoyed the silence for a bit after the long day I had. My enjoyment didn’t last long. I found my wife sitting in the dark at the kitchen table with a glass of wine and some pictures in front of her. At this point I gathered that our kids were not home and she was about to let me have it. I grabbed a beer and sat across from her and told her to go ahead. She tossed the photos across the table to me. After looking through some of them, I realized that my wife must have known about my infidelities for some time. She even had a picture of Jazz’s pregnancy records. Not seeing how any detective could have those, I guessed Jazz must have provided them. She’d backed me into a corner, so I just told her to tell me what she wanted. When she said, “a divorce,” I told her to pass me the damn papers. Vol. 30, 35 / Dec 6 - Dec 12, 2018

After what’s felt like a very long “off ” season, the cruise ships are back in full force; we even had a three-ship day on Tuesday. Welcome back! Cruise shippers get a bad reputation sometimes, probably because (like those other unpopular travelers, Spring Breakers) they’re arrive in high enough density to impact the way we year-round residents move about in our daily routines. I can’t deny that all the extra vehicles on the road, pedestrians on our patchy sidewalks and crosswalks, and fellow swimmers at the beach can be disruptive, but, for the most part, I enjoy the cruise ship folks. For one thing, they’re almost all really excited to be here. Things I frankly tend to take for granted, from the year-round availability of fresh fruit smoothies to the pristine beaches all the way to the feral chickens and goats, are positively enchanting when you’re on vacation. Back home, they may be snarky hipsters, angry bosses, or type-A helicopter parents, but being in a new place gives them social permission to be enthusiastic, and that’s what they are. I also find the cruise shippers I encounter are highly curious about our little corner of paradise. Of course Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

I’ve been asked for directions to some point or other – who hasn’t? – but I’ve also been asked about the structure of the local government, local dishes, home prices, job prospects, and cultural norms, to name just a few. It’s probably an occupational hazard that I am naturally curious and appreciate others who are as well, but fielding their thoughtful and sometimes surprising questions gives often gives me a new appreciation for living here. Finally, you have to love the sense of adventure that so many of the cruise shippers display. They want to climb Mt. Sage. They want to boulder through The Baths (despite the crowds!). They want to hop on a 125cc scooter and ride it over Joe’s Hill. You name it, if there is an adventuresome way to experience the BVI, these folks want to do it. If I ever get complacent in my routine life full of work followed by home chores and toddler care, all I have to do is pretend that I only have one day in the BVI, and my whole perspective shifts. Even if I don’t do anything different that day, it helps me see this place in a more magical light, and I can’t help but be thankful for that.

Megamind turns the story of a superhero on its head, centering the life story of the villain of Metro City and treating the story of the city’s “good guy” as the B-plot. Although it wasn’t very popular when it was released in theaters in 2010, I got to watch it a few times on a recent visit with my nephew, and it’s surprisingly fun. Voiced by Will Ferrell, Megamind’s main power is his super-intelligence, reflected by his enormous head and his barrage of inventions, including a gun that dehydrates people and objects into tiny cubes, an invisible car, and various other high-tech gadgets. As the film opens, Megamind has hit a bit of a rut, however. He and his sidekick Minion (David Cross) routinely kidnap television reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey) and hold her hostage. Each complicated plan brings them close to gaining control over Metro City, but then they wind up defeated by Metro Man, the square-jawed, barrel-chested Elvis look-alike (voiced, appropriately enough, by Brad Pitt) who is the city’s defender. We find out that Megamind has been rivals with Metro Man since they first met in a one-room schoolhouse when they were both students. As an alien unfamiliar with Earth customs, Megamind would inadvertently cause chaos at school, a situation that was exaggerated by Megamind’s home 13

training, which he happened to be receiving from the imprisoned convicts who took him in when he crash landed on Earth as a baby. So, when he only-sort-of-on-purpose kills Metro Man, Megamind finds himself in a tough position: He can take over the city with ease, but with no enemy to fight, he finds his life lacks purpose. What’s more, he’s still pretty awkward in front of humans, a fact that Roxanne and her nerdy cameraman Hal Stewart (Jonah Hill) seem to always be recording for all of Metro City to laugh at. Megamind’s next brilliant scheme is to use his fabulous tech to turn Cameraman Hal a new hero for Metro City. Like his other plans, it starts out well, but before he knows it, Titan is more interested in stealing video games and, you guessed it, kidnapping Roxanne, than he is in being the hero Metro City needs. Now, Megamind has to disguise himself as a sad librarian (Ben Stiller) and partner up with Roxanne to take down the rogue not-so-heroic Titan. Can the life-long bad guy keep up the charade long enough to beat Titan? And who will become the new hero of Metro City? Megamind is available on Amazon and other streaming services.

Visitors run away with BVI Half Marathon St. Martin’s Cécilia Mobuchon and St. Lucia’s Michael Bissette, dominated the men’s and women’s fields during last Saturday’s 13thOgier-Deloitte BVI Sunrise Half Marathon. Mobuchon’s performance stood out from among the competitive field. Slowed by injury two months ago and coming to the BVI with one month’s training, the French woman shattered the 2-year old course record. Mobuchon—fourth overall, went from the gun over the 13.1 miles two laps race between Road Town and Sea Cows Bay, to win in 1 hour 25 minutes and 40 seconds. In the process she shattered St. Thomas’ Ruth Ann David’s 2016 mark of 1:30.21. “I was very motivated today because it was my first half this year and the only thing was running alone, it was very mental. All I could think about was go, go, go, because there was no one with me,” Mobuchon said. “I tried to catch the boys but they were very far from me. It’s not my fastest time. I have no training. Really, I broke the scaphoid bone in my left foot two months ago and I started training one month ago, so I said let’s go, you will see what happens in the race.”

Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

David was just happy to finish the race. She hadn’t been training as before and her work scheduled at the Ritz Carlton where she worked eight hours as a physical trainer changed after Hurricane Irma. “I was happy to maintain a pace because I wanted to stop but I said I have to keep going and I can do all things through Christ Jesus, so I kept pushing myself,” David said. “It’s hard when you don’t train and I’m 45 years old. When you stop training when you’re older, it takes a while to get back to where you were before.” Bissette didn’t get a record but he broke away from the field that included Clif Struiken, Shane DeGannes and Julius Farley by the ferry dock, en route to winning in 1:19.49. “In the first two miles, I normally go out there and test to see what the guys have and when my coach saw the pace, he said ‘Michael, it’s time to make your move, go ahead about your business, keep the focus and maintain the pace,’” said Bissette in his 10thHalf Marathon, but only his first victory. “The only challenge I had was the wind coming off the sea on the way back, but I managed to keep my focus and got the victory.”

How to win: The object is to insert numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. It’s harder than it sounds! 15
