Music & Fashion at the Jazz & Style Festival World class music and high end fashion share the stage all weekend long at Tortola Pier Park’s first ever Jazz & Style Festival, which kicked off Wednesday and continues through Sunday, May 28th. Catch a free preview of what’s to come for the rest of the festival on Thursday, when the park hosts Jazz on the Boardwalk featuring performances by Drexel Glasgow and Final Faze band from 5-8pm. On Friday beginning at 4pm, some of your favorite musicians including Olatunji and the A-Team, Jeremy Vanterpool, Calden James and Dean Frazer take the main stage. There’s also a Fashion & Style Runway Show from Passions by Umi and Diamonds International at 5pm. Don’t forget to stop in at the Myett’s side stage and Aroma’s after party too. The Jazz & Style Festival closes Sunday with a free Cool Down Jazz show with Musa and the Mellow Tones. Enjoy brunch at Camden Market or lunch and drink specials at Myett’s, or head over to Aroma’s or Tropix Cocktail Bar to watch the Poker Run boats come in and out of Road Harbor. Tickets for the Friday and Saturday events are $35 in advance and you can get yours in the Pier Park from Body Glam, Myett’s Chill Zone, or Passions by Umi; or at Hazem’s Beauty Supply, Umi on Waterfront, Speedy’s in Virgin Gorda or online at stubzbvi.com You can also get tickets at the door but you will pay more. Down Memory Lane; Life on the Main Land In our last issue (May 18) I took you down memory lane to “cay life.” In this second part of the series, we’ll sail over to Tortola to hear what it was like before its current developed state. Everybody earned their keep, even the children. They were responsible for going to the well to fetch water for use at home as there were no pipes. They also had to pick wood for household fires, go into the garden and gather sweet potatoes and other vegetables for selling or for cooking. Feeding the goats, milking the cows and washing the dishes were all chores that were done before they went to school and they were always on time. Do you think the school was nearby? Nope. You had to walk from Slaney to Sea Cows Bay or from Sea Cows Bay to Road Town. But if you lived in the town area the walking distance wasn’t too bad. In 1964 Mr. Luther Scatliffe started a school bus service and attending school should have become quicker, but because of the turn-around time (the bus had to make many trips) children often decided to walk to school anyway. To pass time children played dolly house, checkers and many other games. Some looked forward to return to their families on the cays on weekends. During the fifties and forwards, adults had dances at various spots, including a church hall! In those days they’d say nothing was wrong it as you’d never go in the church yard, you entered through Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

the hill. One such popular spot was the Anglican Church Hall. Where Island Sizzle Restaurant and Club is located now was once an old-fashioned dance spot. What fascinates me the most is how they survived life with no electricity. In today’s time when electricity goes, many of us act as if life is coming to an end. Cost of living may have been a whole lot cheaper in those days, but as scarce as things were, they always made do. Imagine a bag of rice was ten cents a pound and $20 could last you a week, or even a month. In those days there were no high-end brands like today, clothes were either made here or ordered from away with money from catching fish or selling produce. When fishermen went to St Thomas and St Croix to sell their catch, they’d shop and bring back items as well. To make a living, persons also migrated to our neighbors US Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. So far, everyone I’ve spoken to who lived in those times has said that while the modern world makes life easier, it also made them lazier because everything is at the touch of your hand. I don’t envy those days, but I do admire the way previous generations put in the work so we can live better than they did. I value the traditions that we still keep. It also reminds me not take anything for granted.

Reigniting the flames of love Nobody wants to be in a marriage or relationship and feel like they are living with their brother or sister! There is no passion or romance and you lead separate lives, just barely managing to update each other on when you will be late. Most relationships start with a lot of fire and passion… couples can’t get enough of each other, their love is visible to all observers, they remember to look nice for each other and they laugh together. With time, children, bills and life, sometimes it is easy to get comfortable and laid back. Nothing is wrong with comfortable, but the relationship is 100 times better when the fire is still burning. Here are 6 ways to rekindle the flames. 1. Never stop going on dates. It could be weekly or monthly, but have times when you get dressed up and do something outside of the house. You can wear outfits you know your partner will love and feel proud to show him or her out to the world. Take turns choosing where you go or what you do. If you can afford it, travel together and see new places. 2. Share with your partner. A couple that shares their day’s experiences, offers each other advice, shares their dreams and how they feel about certain things are way closer than couples who just lie side by side on their own phones at night or watch television in separate rooms. 3. Focus on your partner’s positives and compliment him or her as often as you can. It could be his cooking, the way she manages her career, his legs, her spontaneity, etc. There are things about each other that you loved so much, but now you only see what irritates you. If you have to mention the faults, do it kindly, but the positives must al-
ways get more attention. 4. Do things together. You can have a project where you fix something in the home, mentor a youth or another couple, start a charity project, cook together on Sundays, have devotions and have meals together sometimes; how amusing would it be to set the table for a bread and cheese and homemade lemonade dinner? 5. Be nice to each other. Nothing kills passion faster than disrespect or animosity. Forgiving your partner and being sensitive to his or needs will cause your partner to think he or she is the luckiest person on earth to have such a kind and loving spouse and such a person cannot wait for you to come home to shower you with love. 6. Have separate interests. This might sound counterproductive, but when you do things with your own friends or you are a part of a group or something, you have more stories to come back and share with your partner and time apart makes the time together even more special. Relationships do not thrive on their own and couples do not just live happy lives by accident… it takes some effort. If you have already decided that this is the person you want to be with for the rest of your life, then why not just love them with your whole heart and show them that you do. There are no perfect people but two imperfect persons can have a delightful life together just by each taking small steps forward, together, every day…and by the way, hold hands while you’re at it. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

Will To Love If you’ve been paying real close attention to the recent Video Views, you might think that I have an obsession with Marques Houston. I swear to you I don’t. It’s just that he’s been in a string of straight-to-DVD movies that I never got to see that were recently released on Netflix. Blame the algorithm that keeps suggesting a new one after I finished the last. For this film, our friend Marques plays Jamal Hawkins, a company CEO who has 90 just days to get married if he wants to inherit his grandfather’s company and estate. Apparently Granddad Hawkins, who is terminally ill, thinks that without a wife in his life, Jamal won’t be responsible with such an inheritance because he decides that if Jamal is still single when he passes, the family fortune should instead go to Jamal’s sister Monica (Shondrella Avory). Clearly this movie is at least as much a comedy as it is a romance flick. Jamal’s assistant Rachel (Keshia Knight Pulliam), and his friend Danny (Black Thomas) come up with a plan to help Jamal tie the knot before Granddad passes. On the flip side, sister Monica would love to get the company, and is plotting to make sure that her brother fails in his quest to find a wife fast. To that end, she sends out her assistant to dig up dirt on her brother. Imagine that! Your own sister wants to take bread out of your mouth and will go to any cost to win. I thought siblings were supposed to look out for each other. When Jamal finds his perfect candidate, he comes clean about the reason why he chose to date her. To my surprise Candice (Draya Michele) is all for it. She tells him she’ll help him inherit the
company, but there’s a catch: She wants a piece of the inheritance, and a mighty one if you ask me. But even before she showed her greedy side, there was something about that rubbed me the wrong way about her from her first scene. At the engagement party, Candice’s shady business gets let out and you get to see what her real motive was for getting into Jamal’s life in the first place. There’s another lady in the film that caught Jamal’s eyes. Would she be the one to marry him and help him inherit the company? Will Jamal get the company in the end or will his sister Monica inherit it? You can watch Will to Love now on Netflix or find it on DVD. 13

Birth of a 400m Hurdler When Kyron McMaster ran a world leading 47.80 seconds over the 400m Hurdles in Jamaica on Saturday, it sent shock-
young age, then we close the door on them and they may not get the opportunity to find out what their real event is, because they’re somewhat shell cased into one or two events. That may not be beneficial to them.” McMaster competed in the CAC Age Group Championships, 11-12 and 13-14 events that involved the 60/80m sprints; 80m Hurdles, Long Jump, Ball Throw, High Jump, Shot Put, 1000/1200m, winning High Jump bronze medals in both divisions. How did he become a hurdler? “Before he went to the IAAF World Youth Championships in 2013, he was about to run 46 seconds in the 400m and I said to him, ‘if you ever run 46 seconds, I’m going to punish you, because it’s too fast, too soon,’” Samuels recalled. “When he returned, I said let me put him in the High Jump because he could at that time, jump 1.95m. While we were discussing, I looked at the hurdles and I said ‘nah, you gonna run the hurdles’ and we just started doing it.” Samuels added: “We’re going to prove to the world that he’s more than a 400m hurdler, very, very soon.” Since taking up the hurdles as a 17 year old in 2014, McMaster, 20, has not yet run 20 races over the barriers. “Like everything else, we have to be very particular in how we strategize the event, when and how you race, because some races are going to be slower than others,” Samuels said. “It depends on the cause, the field and the reason for doing that race.” Others should take a page out of Samuels’ playbook!
waves across the globe. Putting McMaster’s time in perspective, only two athletes in 2016 ran the event in under 48 seconds, three in 2015, none in 2014 (the year he took up hurdling), and two in 2013. McMaster and Chantel Malone are the territory’s only two athletes to have qualified for an IAAF World Jr. Championships final. Several of our other athletes have had to wait until all the heats had been completed before advancing to the semifinals based on times. The difference with McMaster and Malone? They’re both multiple-event athletes who did not fall into the common fallacy of becoming specialists at an early age. Engaging in multiple events that involve running, jumping and throwing at an early age develops the different muscle groups as a young athlete grows and develops. Numerous studies have shown that early athlete specialization limits that athlete’s later potential. “What we have to be so careful of with youngsters and a lot of people find it difficult to understand, that a 12 year old superstar is not a 15 year old superstar,” explained McMaster’s coach Dag Samuels, the reigning Coach of the Year. “When we begin to be specific in their events at a very Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
