Vol. 30, 45 / Feb 21 - Feb 27, 2019

We’re well in to 2019, so the time has come and gone for a “new year, new you,” or “year of fitness”- type transformation of habits. But fret not, you live on an island, which means you have a host of different exercise options in your day-to-day life. My favorite workout at the moment is driveway sprints. Sure, you could keep things simple and leave the house in one try every morning, but for me, with a toddler and all his goodies to consider, repeated trips up and down the steep driveway and steps to the house are a great way to get my heart rate up before work. Trip one will be bags and the little one, trip two is garbage to take to the dumpster, and the third (and sometimes fourth) for whatever I realize I forgot once I take my seat inside the vehicle. The downside is that you may wind up arriving at work slightly less than shower fresh. Now you may be saying to yourself, “I’m just starting out on my fitness journey,” or “I have bad knees.” Obviously, you need a workout that’s a lower impact. Once again, island life has you covered with the running errands in town in the middle of the day workout. What you do is park your vehicle wherever you can find a space, which may be at the dusty end of a hidden area Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

6

that only you know about. Then, go do all your stops. Hit the shop. Pay that bill. Visit your friend that works at an office nearby. Make that appointment you’ve been putting off for too long already. Only return to your vehicle after you’ve crisscrossed the entirety of Road Town on foot. This workout requires special equipment: you’ll need a water bottle to stay hydrated in the noon sun, plus a hat or parasol so you don’t get sunburned. Ready to move beyond cardio? Try the chores when you don’t drive workout. Your warmup is to gather the laundry. Instead of carrying only what you’ll wear for the week, do all the washing. I’m talking bedding, curtains, towels, everything. Once you have it all together it will be nice and heavy. Carrying it from the house to the taxi and the taxi into the laundry is your first set. Next you’ll hit the grocery store and buy as much as you can in bulk. Then it’s back to the laundry to fold and bag up the clothes, and of course your final set is hauling everything back into your home. Cool down by packing away what has to be chilled right away. How do you squeeze activity into your regular routine? Let us know on the Limin Times Facebook page.

Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, Shakespeare’s King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a king, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Catch King Lear as it was filmed from the London stage as part of the BVI Theatre Series this Saturday at HLSCC at 7pm. She Devil

An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary

Chapter 5: Dragging Things Out Omg, I just finish my third term of college and I didn’t die. I feel empowered by my choice to go back to school, I’m even thinking on going back to get a higher degree - I could be Dr. Angel! I’m pretty smart if you care to know, I’ve been getting good grades so far. Things at the club continue to have its moments as far as making a living. The good part is I make real bank. Every night I split my money three ways, one way for bills, one way for rainy day, and oneway long term savings. For someone who didn’t have any positive role models or guidance growing up, I managed to get some sense and a bit of education. Around the club, I’ve been staying away from Troy’s trifling ass, which both he and Britney seem to be loving. I heard that she got robbed the other night and of course with her wanting to start drama between us again she is acting like she thinks I set her up. Too bad for her it happened during my last final, so I had a solid alibi. I know I said she would pay, and I still think she’d deserves it, both her and Troy do, but that kind of punishment was beneath me. Things with David has been going okay. When he’s in town we see each other, and we do check in when he’s not in town. I was in the dressing room looking over the final touches of my attire when Da Don walked in and told me to come to his office before I head out. ********************************** 11

WOW! I just got the biggest job of my career and I’m glad I won’t be sharing the moment with anyone. My portion of the pay would set me good. I just rolled over at 2:30pm from last night’s endeavors, thank God the college was closed, or I would’ve missed all my classes today. The rest of the week at the club was a drag. We had both good nights and bad nights. I was just in the dressing room minding my own business when Britney walked up to me and started bumping her gums. I was not paying her any attention until; “So you think you’re so hot now because a fine brother paying you a little attention,” said Britney. I held my tongue and counted to 10. Why would she care about David and me? Or does she think Da Don is fine? You can’t talk sense to people on her level. But she wouldn’t be satisfied until she had a response. “Nothing to say, huh? You’re so stuck up, and you think you’re the only one who knows how to read a book around here,” she sneered. “But Troy gave me all the tea on you and your mom–“ I whipped around, finally facing her. I really had drawn my hand back to deliver what would have been a mighty slap but over Britney’s shoulder I saw the dressing room open. More girls were streaming in after finishing up their work night. I let my arm and face relax and whispered “This ain’t over,” before I turned back to packing up my things to go. Daughter Feels Restricted This week we bring you a classic Ask Koren on the timeless topic of teens and their parents having conflicting ideas about dating Dear Koren, I’m 19 years old and my parents still expect me to go out in groups all the time and the only guy they allow me to go out with one-on-one is the son of their friends. He is nice, but we just don’t have any chemistry. I know they are trying to be protective, but I’m an adult now and I don’t want to hide from them. They dated from in secondary school so they don’t understand that nowadays people date several persons before they choose one. How can I get them to realize that times are different now? – SMH Dear Miss Head Shaker, I love it the way 19 year olds think they invented all things modern. Your parents know full well that things have changed; they see it every day all around them. They just know what worked for them, what made them happy and kept them safe and sane and they want the same for you. A preference for dating one person does not mean they don’t know serial dating exists. So please don’t be fooled by their apparent meekness. They are well aware of the modern ways of doing things.

They look at you and they see a baby, an infant, a toddler, a young child, a teenager and now a young woman. You are precious to them and they don’t want you hurt or knocked about or abused. In addition to knowing you, they know enough about how some persons are predators, how young ladies get raped on dates, how not everyone is kind and considerate and respectful. They know that there is a plethora of sexually transmitted diseases out there. So don’t blame their ancient thinking for their attitudes... Trust me, it is their modern understanding and their love for you that actually drives them to want to protect you. In terms of persuading them to see you differently, the best course is to reassure them that you have not forgotten the principles and values they raised you with. Let them know you want to be able to choose for yourself and not get yourself tied down to the first person you talk to. When they see that you can use your common sense and good judgment in the dating world, hopefully they will relax and allow you to do your thing.

I loved to watch figure skating as a kid, so I was familiar with the story of Tonya Harding, the first US woman to ever complete a triple Axel in competition. In case you aren’t, I won’t say here exactly why she stopped skating at just 23 years old, but let’s just say that it was one of the biggest news stories of 1994. I, Tonya, revisits Tonya’s life in a darkly funny fashion, poking fun, as Tonya did in some interviews, at her upbringing and at some of the more absurd aspects of her life. Recreations of actual interviews with Harding (Margot Robbie), her mother LaVona Golden (Allison Janney), her husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), and her bodyguard Shawn Eckardt (Paul Walter Hauser) are included throughout. These moments feel like the confessional scenes in a reality television show. Despite the fact that they are drawn from actual interviews, the people giving them seem at times even more ridiculous than the most desperate of housewives. On the ice, Tonya was a big-haired 1980s princess -- rocketing to the top of the national figure skating scene at a young age and able to execute all kinds of moves her peers wouldn’t attempt in competition. Off the ice, we see that Tonya’s family is solidly work13

ing class, and her treatment at home is far from royal. LaVona pushes her daughter hard in the notoriously elitist sport. What’s worse, LaVona is at times violent with Tonya. Her justifications, such as the remark that Tonya skates better when she’s angry, come across as almost believable, thanks mostly to Allison Janney’s stellar acting. As Tonya grows up on screen, her form improves, but her rough personality still alienates judges. In one scene, Tonya tells a judge that if he doesn’t like her costume, he can find the $5,000 to purchase her a new one or “stay out of my face.” At just 15, Tonya gets together with Jeff, and, like so many abused young women, Tonya sees marriage as an escape from an ugly home situation. Unfortunately, the union is not a happy one. In fact, Jeff is in many ways worse than her mother. She separates from him, then reconciles after a skating judge advises that Tonya might present a more stable home life as a wife than a divorcee. Too bad for Tonya, because it’s Jeff that eventually triggers the moment that ends her career in figure skating. I, Tonya is available on iTunes and other streaming services.

Thrilling Cycling Finish After a flat and fitness cut the field in half, Sunday’s 12-lap, 74mile BVI Cycling Federation Election Classic came down to four riders in a $500 sprint finish at the line at the Benjamin Romney Park in West End. St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Trevor Bailey, who won both $50 sprint premiums, outsprinted his Antigua and Barbuda and BVI counterparts, squeaking in just .08 seconds and .18 ahead of the other top finishers. Bailey won in win in 3 hours, 57 minutes and 40 seconds, holding off Antigua and Barbuda’s Sean Weathered, who finished at 3:57.45, and the BVI’s Phillipe Leroy, who finished at 3:57.47. Antigua and Barbuda’s Rena Gayral rounded out the mix finishing fourth at 3:57.48. “I was looking to drop them and come to the finish line by myself,” said Bailey, who won the 2018 Caribbean Cycling Championships. He said he’s used to competing on a different terrain. “I’m from Vincy with hills. Not this. It was too flat. I train on flat, but the race was good.” Weathered had Bailey, with whom he competed in the Caribbean Championships, as his target. “No hard feelings. I’m twice his age, and trying to compete still,” he said of Bailey, 23. “That’s what it’s all about.” With four of them riding more-or-less together over the last 20 miles, it was tough to break away on

the last lap. “I’m not a sprinter, but I have rolling speed, so I’ll roll back in,” he said. “You’re not gonna get away from me once it’s a flat course, but he tried. And Phillipe, for his age—brilliant effort—absolutely brilliant effort. He tried to leave us on the last lap, but that wasn’t possible.” Leroy, who raced just two weeks shy of his 59th birthday, said it was a great race, but with not many participants, there was a lot of ‘cat and mouse.’ “We were going very slowly, then very fast, so it was very hard on the legs,” he pointed out after finishing in third place. “After six laps, I couldn’t get rid of them. They’re too young and strong. At least I’m glad, I didn’t finish last on the sprint. So it was great. The guys were very good.” BVI Cycling Federation president Darel Christopher Sr., said despite the small numbers, there was a great crowd watching the small field of riders. “I was expecting the race to be faster,” he said. “But it needed more people in the leading pack so we could have more speed. They took a little while just to finish 74 miles, but the youngster, Mr. Bailey, he won the two sprint premes and the overall and I see a great future for that young man.”
